Game day: Bears v. Packers
BY RICKY O'DONNELL
Growing up, I remember people calling in to sports talk radio shows to say they would gladly take a 2-14 season from the Bears if it meant beating the Packers twice. Now that the scenario is almost possible, I can unequivocally say that I could not disagree more. I hate the Pack as much as any Bears fan, but I could handle Green Bay sweeping the season series if it meant the two teams would swap overall records.
That being said, don’t write off the Bears before kickoff just yet, like, say, the Chicago Tribune did when every one of its writers picked the Packers to win today’s game. This rivalry always seems to mean more to the team with the inferior season record, and Lovie Smith has made it a point to beat Green Bay. Defeating the Packers five times in seven tries, it seems Smith really was serious when he listed beating the rival Packers the first of his three goal plan upon taking the job.
While winning this game would probably hurt the Bears more then help them, there is still something in me that would love to see the Bears win, even if it meant hurting their draft pick. Maybe Urlacher and Briggs can even knock the snot out of Favre a few times for good measure, something I could never get tired of seeing.
Here is a question you can answer in the comments section, if you’d like: How do you the Bears fan feel about Brett Favre? I’ll assume that I am a little younger then some readers, so maybe our opinions will differ. Personally, I detest Favre. I feel like the man single-handedly ruined a small portion of my childhood, and for that, I can never gather any real admiration for him. I am only 20 years old, so for my entire life, Favre is the only Packers quarterback I have ever known. He has stuck it to the Bears so many times, it would be impossible for me to even remotely root for him. Maybe that comes off as a tad immature or crazy, but I can’t help it.
I’d like to know how many Bears fans like, respect, and appreciate Favre. He certainly seems like a nice fellow in interviews and has had his fair share of hard personal moments in recent years. I would assume that most Bears fans think highly of Favee, and that my thinking is in the minority. Let me know.

Ricky you don't have to like the man to respect what he has accomplished in his career. During the best and worst seasons he has been the one constant in Green Bay while the same position has been the most inconsistant in Chicago. At some point Ricky you should have turned your disdain to the Bears organization for the lack of being able to field a team that could contend because even during Farve's off years he always seemed to be able to carve Chicago's defense up like a holiday turkey.
Ricky responds: This seems like a good time to note I just realized every Sun-Times writer also picked against the Bears. Jeez, I'm such an amateur.

Even though the Bears are playing for a higher pick right now, it sure would be good to beat the Cheese Heads. I cannot stand the way announcers suck up to Farve, like Aikman whens he keeps calling him Brett. Other Qb's he calls by their last name.

Ricky:
It's good to see a young person who knows that Packer hatred is a big part of being a Bears fan.
Favre has ruined many a Sunday dinner for too many years. Before him, Don Majkowski and Lynn Dickey got in a few jabs. Bart Starr had his share of spoiled meals, too. So did Tobin Rote and Cecil Isbell. It goes back a long way.
But Favre is the all-time Packer king of Bear destroyers.
How do I feel about him? Like a good Bears fan, I hate him. My only wish is that he could have played for us all these years.

Hey, Ricky O'D, he must have really messed you up. You went from spelling his name correctly the first two times to Farve the last four. Or was that despite? Anyway, a true sports fan loves a consummate professional, regardless of sport. True he's had his troubles in the past, but the man's a PLAYER. A linebacker in a with a quarterback mentality. Plus those IRONMAN statistics are no joking matter. Just ask the thousand or so signal callers before him who were LUCKY to see four seasons. I DESPISE Packerdom, but I admire an above average player who left everything on the field week after week to reach a plateau his, at times, decision making shortcomings couldn't even detain. No Unitas, Marino, Manning, or Brady but someone who did the job well and proved naysayers very wrong to date. He's a 'PLAYERS PLAYER', and that speaks plenty.
I felt in my bones all week we were going to sweep ----------until I woke up this morning and found roof tiles of my neighbors, six houses down, in my yard.
Tomorrows headline: WIND'OH' OF OPPORTUNITY GONE
High winds and freezing temperatures force Bears to run and ----------------well, you could take it from there.
Ricky responds: How embarrassing. I fixed it now, I think. If only Microsoft Word recognized Farve as an actual word I wouldn't have this problem.

wowwww... you REALLY need to chill out, Ricky... as a Packer fan since '59, I still have a lot of respect for some great Bears players who kicked some serious GB butt over the years (Ditka, George, Galimore, Sayers, Payton, Butkus, Urlacher, etc.), but no animosity here. I did have a small issue with Perry rubbing it in a few times running for touchdowns when the games were iced, but hey, good for him... Shorten your name to Rick rather than Ricky; you'll feel less juvenile and spiteful. It's a freakin' game... The Pack lucked out and found a QB who has entertained for years; touchdowns AND interceptions...

No Joke..I am heading on Vacation, but..Ricky..your a good writer and I felt compelled to give you two quick words to the wise.
#1 No need to tell us we can comment, we know, thats the whole point of a blog.
#2 Dont ask us a question and then immediately bloviate on with your own answer.
Cause...you basically answered for roughly 98% of your readers with your own post. There are not too many in here who are original and as creative as you....dont over shine your posters.
Good Luck This week...you will need it.

The only good Packer is a Utterly Destroyed/Roughed Up/Beaten/Heavily Sacked/Completely Mangled Up one!!!

I hate Favre just like I hate anyone who isn't in a Chicago uniform. I don't like how Favre is a phony and he always seems to mug for the cameras. I remember when his wife came out for the coin-toss with Charles Woodson and he introduced her to him. Why hasn't she met him before then? Aren't there team functions where the wives come? This is his 2nd year with the team. And since I get the Trib for like $6 a month I read that as well. But that seems to bode well for the BEARS because there have been times when they all picked the BEARS to win and they lost. And I for onr can care less if they pick 12th or 20th,they're just gonna trade down regardless. It won't be what everyone wants anyone so foggitaboutit.

I like your style Ricky!
GO BEARS!

Hey, Ricky
You're so fine, You're so fine, you blow our mind
Say Ricky... Say Ricky
Love Favre. Like watching Romo, it's nice to see someone have fun playing this game.
That said, still like to see the Bears win.

PACK (WIND)BLOWN OUT
Thank God for Bear weather!
Take that to the Green Bay bank!
Season saved! Kinda.
False start, fast finish.
O.K., who switched the uniforms?

This is SOOO SWEET! Not only are Da Bears STOMPING the Packs sorry Butts, but they just took away the Cheese Heads chances for Home Field in the Playoffs. Now the Cowboys can give Romo(thumb) and TO (ankle) 3 weeks off to heal. This one will not sit well with the Pig Farmers from north of the Border! This just made the Season!!

It's 35 / 7 Bears as I type, with about 8 minutes to play.
If they somehow figure out a way to lose this game, the entire team, the coaching staff, and the general manager should be fired.

WOOOOO-HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEARSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ricky, I'm just a little older than Favre... and my Packer hate has dissipated since the good old Ditka days.
I've always liked Favre.
I don't let bears koolaid interfere with my judgments about individual players..
have always liked Favre and the last couple of years, as he's gotten older, I've grown to like him more and more.
the victories I appreciate best is when you just whip the crap out of someone, not flukey victories, or shootouts decided on which team has the ball last.
So today was kind of a good feeling.
but nothing will ever come close to what the 85 Bears did to Dallas (44-0) and I HATED Dallas back then, and of course there was the Giants, Rams and Patriots.
the first game of the 87 season was good too, when the Bears beat Phil Simms silly and made a joke of the 86 Giants SuperBowl champion team, which was a fluke. (Buffalo should've won that year)
anyways..
Love Favre.. and now I will love Romo.. for precisely the reasons Seedy describes.
nothing bring more joy to a middle aged man's heart (and trust me middle age sucks, the only thing that sucks more is geezerdom which comes next) than watching a guy having fun playing ball.

So much for the predictions of all the pundints.
Posted by: Tim Little | December 23, 2007 04:52 PM
I hate the Packers, but I actually hate the Vikings more. Anyone else share my feelings?
I honestly have to respect Brett Favre. The guy has been a mainstay in Green Bay for so long and has helped them win. He's a standup guy, unlike some of the other players from both the Packers and the Vikings (Nick Barnett comes to mind today).
Anyone else glad that 'Moose' is hopefully done as a Bear after one more game?

It was good to see the team actually win in all facets of the game. I'm still disappointed in some of the fans reaction and really question whether or not they really know the game. When Maynard punted and the crowd let out this great big disgusting moan I actually thought something was wrong that I missed. But the guy kicked it out of bounds at the ten and they didn't even appreciate the placement. Even on this blog one guy drops ONE pass and he's singled out. It was cold out there and I thought I saw a whole bunch of players on both teams drop passes. Favre's guys dropped way more and they get to go to the playoffs with a 1st round bye. If they were in Chicago people would actually come out and say that they have no chance. They don't have the same pressure that we apply and that in itself is the reason that they achieve more. Their fans side with them and go to the games and don't boo just because they can. Our fans are too hard on their players and it seems to get worse every year. Favre sucked but in their next game his jersey will still be the #1 jersey out there. Maybe Favre should relinguish all his records because he looked bad today. Maybe he was thinking about a Christmas party or something like Rex did last season. He stunk bad but no one is going to make him live with it forever like these fans do. GO BEARS!!

Ricky, um - you still got it wrong, man. It's "Favre." Didn't you see "There's Something About Mary?" Were you even born when that movie came out? Anyway, even though you dislike the guy you should still spell his name right. I went to j-school, too - spelling someone's name wrong was a sure "F" where I went. I am soooooo telling Roman on you when he gets back!
Still waiting for that headline, Stuck......

Living in Packer land and putting up with the rise of the Packers and the fall of the Bears has been terrible. Today makes it somewhat more "bearable". Go Cubs!!
Posted by: ed bear | December 23, 2007 07:08 PM
I'll tell you, I remember the bears post game shows that would go on and on til the 10 o'clock news, and then to hear Mark Giangreco with a drunk McMichael...on the news go on and on... I have actually grown to hate the 84/85/86/87 bears for the way they carried themselves..and still do today. Being stuck here....is unfair to packer fans, because they don't have the same kind of hate that I have for them. I can tell you though, Brett Favre has carried himself well, and respecfully so.
Today, for the first time ever I watched the Packers 'locker room' to listen to them whine about their whooping. Time after time..all I heard was " I'm not making any excuses for the weather, they had to play in it too, but really it was the weather". Then I realized , why do I have so much hate for the packers anyway? After all, Brett Favre never beat the Bears, it was always injuries, the weather, or the Bears who beat the Bears.
Besides, Brett Favre is a guy just like me.....stuck in Wisconsin. No shame about that, despite the food, it really is beautiful country up here....and the people just aren't as angry.
Posted by: stuckinwisconsin | December 23, 2007 07:21 PM
o.k......here it is........
anoREXic
Chicago- The Bears beat the Packers by 28 points, despite the fact
that their offense has totally wasted away without Rex Grossman.
If only every game had the weather this game had, then opposing offenses would be put on a level playing field with the Bears, and Kyle Orton just might end up in the Hall of Fame. Alas, we all know that pigs will never fly, and Rex is our guy. The echos
of lost hope stuck under the ruins of a franchise' past, still
can be heard as the wind howls past our ears. They whisper, then fade, teasing us with with every whimper. If ever there was a day
when Rex could be considered a second coming of Brett Favre, there is no debating. Just look at his(Brett) passer rating.
OR
Courtin' Orton
Chicago- you do your own story...I am still a 'Rex man'.
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO GOOOOOOO BEARS! ...oops..I meant go beers...get in my belly.
Posted by: stuckinwisconsin | December 23, 2007 07:57 PM
I also hate the Packers, but despise the Vikings more. When the Bears play any team, I am an opponent-hater. But as an NFL fan in the big picture, I have to say that Favre's career has been an outstanding one - highs and lows that have made him a player and a person you can respect.
It would have been nice to have that kind of quarterback longevity in Chicago (maybe Kyle Orton??)
Posted by: Erika AH | December 23, 2007 08:24 PM
Yeah, Pete? St. Clair looked good at left guard. How do I know? Orton had time to pass. He looked okay, too. So did AP. Wow! An offensive line that can block normally makes everyone look better.
Hate the Vikes, because they are some of the luckiest....glad Wash. just murderlized them.
Like Favre's playing style, still hate that he plays for the Pack.
Next season there will be a real QB competition, and hopefully our line problems will be solved. Finally, for all I care...Moose, Berrian, Sheed', Bradley all can leave via free agency (whether they are free agents or not.)
Final question, if Hass is so good, why has no other team put him on THEIR active roster?
Posted by: chuck 1 | December 23, 2007 10:55 PM
Favre when is the next AA meeting? Bottom line is that chump still has as many rings as trent dilfer. Briggs is a punk for quitting on this team, I hope he loses all his money to his ten bastard kids. way to go maybe by the end of your career you will beat TRavis Henry or Sean Kemp...scumbag, you will always be robin and never batman.
Posted by: Diddy | December 23, 2007 11:28 PM
Stuck - that "get in my belly" line is classic stuff!!!!
Pretty Ricky, I understand exactly how you feel about Farve, but Tim Little hit the nail on the head. Comes a time when you have to stop hatin and start applauding. We are watching history. This guy is going to be like Paul Bunyun or somebody. His tales are going to grow wild and his legend with never end.
All that said, its a special day in chicago when you beat the Pack! This year has had its own magic for that purpose alone. This was a Chicago Christmas present - giftwrapped in ice on the lakefront! Was beautiful! Packers lost that game, but they can thank the Bears for showing them their major flaw on special teams. Might wanna get that fixed before they meet Dallas.

Basicaly I've had 3 favorite NFL teams the Bears and who ever was playing against the Pack and the Cowboys that week. Unlike the Pack I kind of always considered the Vikings as more an annoying fly that you just can't seem to swat but doesn't really matter.
Posted by: Tim Little | December 24, 2007 08:31 AM
As a long-time Packer hater even pre-dorky-Favre, I was delighted to watch him suffer in the cold. How sweet it was. the regret is that the Bears showed too little too late. Next year let's break New England's record.
Posted by: Paul Manter | December 24, 2007 11:29 AM
Briggs didn't didn't quit on this team. They were icing his hip during the game last week. If he was a quitter he would not have suited up after the 10th game. He was hurt several weeks ago and still played. Don't crucify the guy just because you don't like him. Honestly, back to Favre: I would've loved for him to have played with the BEARS but he didn't and that's that. You're right ,he has as many rings as Dilfer. I don't like him mainly because he has beaten the BEARS a bunch of times and just about every announcer acts like he's the only QB in the NFL. He's great but it's not like he's the only QB that ever played the game. I remember after they lost to the BEARS on Monday night that Madden acted like his son just died or something. They are supposed to be impartial but they throw too much love his way.

Go Bears!!!!!!,whats really embarassing is 99% of sportswriters were sellouts and gleefully picked the Packers(Greenhay wisconseen type)its a shame when a trained dolphin and a lady (african-american radio host from B-96)constantly beats our sportswriters in predicting outcomes of Bears game.what maroons!!!and yes I meant maroons for those joke challenged Akeelah the bee types...Merry xmas Green bay whackers, see ya next year!.......Doc

Roman:
"Maybe Urlacher and Briggs can even knock the snot out of Favre a few times for good measure."
It's funny that you would say "Urlacher and Briggs" when Briggs is out for the season and Hillenmeyer was the one who actually put the stamp of Favre's behind. When I see a QB like Fave slice and dice on my team, I say: "How can wee duplicate that success here?"
It seems that nobody in Chicago has read the statistic which states that the Teams who make it to the superbowl have had a tough time making it back to the playoffs in the past seven years. With this game, the Bears showed that they still have it.
Urlacher looked just like Hester when he ran back for that
touchdown.
