Did Michael Vick deserve 23 months?

Well...im no Judge, nor was I privy to the full scope of the indictment and alleged accusations, but I trust that the Guy who did levy the jail term... was!

He also failed a drug test while out on bail, and was pulled over and cited for not wearing a seat belt. He has shown zero respect for the law. The question should be, did he get enough time.

I think the sentence was fair. With time off, he probably still will get only serve the 18 months called for in the sentencing guidelines and he deserves more severity than the average first-time offender. You can't really make a case that this guy never got the breaks. He's made himself into a loser by his own criminality and continuing associations with the wrong people. In short, Michael Vick chose to have characters instead of character in his life and this sentence is just one of many tragic consenquences he brought on himself.

This is a (and I use the term loosely)man who would kill animals with his bare hands. Rather then giving them a quick merciful death by putting a bullet through their brain, he would electrocute them, strangle them, body slam them to the floor, etc. This is beyond any justified behavior in a civilized society. This is the behavior of a sick individual who enjoys seeing animals suffer and die at his hands. Unfortunately, after he has served his too short sentance, he will go out and do it again. I have to ask, where were his parents in this? It was reported that this behavior has been going on for years. But I guess they didn't want to upset the gravy train. And now the mother has the nerve to sit in court and cry about her little sonny boy?

If not for his celeb status would he have gotten a stiffer penalty? If so then he didn't get enough time. If not then not much more to say except he got what he deserved.

Vick got what he got because he is Michael Vick. And there are MANY folks in this society who have done far worse and got far less (see scooter libby for reference). It doesn't say to children - don't do this or you will go to jail - it says - if you are rich black and famous - you better "BEHAVE" or the powers that be will make an example of you. If Vick was a nobody - like the guys who ratted him out - he gets no time. In fact - Feds don't even care. I am willing to say that if Vick was a white athlete - this probably doesn't even make the paper.

I think it was to much. From my heart, I can't even tell you what I think his sentence should be, America hasn't done those things to people since Iraq. Having said that, I don't think he is going to do it again. So the rehabilitation part is done. The punishment part of 23 months was a little harsh. The judge must have a similar heart to mine. That's why I would never want to judge.

I hope this time changes him - way too much talent and ability to impact young people for the positive to end this way.

Michael Vick was railroaded by an unjust system. First let me say Vick is an idiot for getting involved in something as petty and stupid as dog fighting however some people are taking this to the extreme and piling on. Michael Vic did something awful, but he didn't deserve 23 months in prison for it. If we're serious about animal cruelty, we only need to look at ourselves and what's on most of our plates. Yes, you guessed it - the products of animals we eat and drink are all products of cruelty and abuse. If you want to end cruelty to animals, start with yourself by becoming vegan.

If you break the law, you should pay the penalty. Trying to defend bad behavior by comparing it to other bad behavior is a childish defense.

Michael Vick's two co-conspirators got 18 and 21 months respectively. The one who got three extra months, did so for having a record.

Vick was the ringleader. Therefore, 23 months makes perfect sense. Black, white or green.

23 months - too much for a first time conviction. Pedophiles - execute them. Enron officers - life sentence, no possibility of parole. Vick was hurting dumb animals. Vick wasn't railroaded, he was GUILTY. O.J. may have been guilty of murder, but he used his money and got out of it. Vick certainly had more money, so if he was innocent, he could've fought the charges. Vick didn't get more time because he's a celebrity, it's because we usually don't know or don't care about the sentence a convicted dogfighting ringleader gets, so we don't know what to compare it to.

Finally, I don't care about whether he smoked pot, but obviously he was stupid enough to hang out with "unsavory characters". Stupid is as stupid does.

1. He wasn't pardoned, his sentence was commuted. He is still a convicted felon, and also has to pay his fines.

2. Do you think that if Colin Powell or Condi Rice had been convicted of obstruction of justice*, they too, would not have received the same commutation as Libby?

The fact is, Libby was given this commutation because he was a member of the Administration and took one for the team, not because he was white.

Vick was "hunted down" and "publicly humiliated"? He wasn't "on the lam," and I don't recall the Feds putting him in the stockade so that children could throw fruit at him. In all seriousness, he was indicted just like Lay, Skilling and Kozlowski and was paraded back and forth to the courthouse just as they were. While you may not think they were humiliated, I guarantee you that what happended to them is probably the last thing a rich, white CEO or CFO would want to experience. Their indictments and trials received plenty of media coverage and they were pilloried by everyone - from the government and media down to the public. Heck, these clowns were responsible for the Feds enacting Sarbanes-Oxley! I don't think that they were treated unfairly, nor do I think Vick was treated unfairly.

And if anyone wants to make the argument that the Feds were using Vick to set an example because he was a rich, black man, what are their thoughts regarding Martha Stewart? The Feds prosecuted her - a rich, famous white lady - in order to use her as their example for insider trading. Were they trying to send a message to entrepreneurial white women? Frankly, I don't care if they prosecuted either in order to use them as their poster children for the criminal justice system, or to try and beef up the prosecutor's resume, as neither of them were innocent. They did the crime, they should do their time.

Vick should have gotten what the dogs got. It would be fitting if the NFL commissioner banned him for life. Pete Rose was banned for life for betting on baseball, a much less heinous crime. But since Vick is a poor black child nothing will be done. It might offend the rest of his ilk. It would be poetic justice if he were placed in a cell with a 300 pound PETA freak.

The issue here is not about race it's about respect for life. Michael Vick lives in the world of privilege and influence.
He should have used that influence to set an example for those who look up to him. He failed us all miserably.

I really could care less if he is black or white. But I have a problem when drunk drivers kill innocent people get charged with vehicular manslaughter (sometimes just getting probation -- and yes I know personally of an incident)... yet they make a choice to get behind the wheel and risk other people's lives.

So far as I can tell, Michael Vick is not really sorry for his actions. Maybe he didn't quite understand the severity of the crimes he was committing, but ignorance of the law doesn't make you any less culpable. He is a reprehensible pig and I believe he was sentenced according to the law, not according to his race or celebrity. It was reported that he showed up in court today chewing gum. I hope the judge added a few months for that. I think he's known for a long time that he'd have a lengthy jail term, but what would really punish him would be to take away his livelihood. He should undoubtedly receive a lifetime ban from the NFL. I can't believe that Roger Goodell would risk alienating so many fans for one convicted felon.

Look, Michael Vick broke the law but will not pay 23 months for it. The law dictates the penalty and in this case, the Judge awarded or cursed as the case may be, more time than the federal recommendation. This will be grounds for a sentencing appeal which Vick's lawyers will win as soon as they play the race card. Sorry to all of you folks who wish to see him get a life sentence, but it’s just not going to happen. Vick committed a crime and will pay the average price in terms of sentence and not the overkill sentence he actually received. Vick will be out of the slammer in 8 months, just in time for CFL opening day.

Vick should have gotten what the dogs got. It would be fitting if the NFL commissioner banned him for life. Pete Rose was banned for life for betting on baseball, a much less heinous crime. I guess it's my turn. I watched and read and it's odd that this has become a black and white discussion. Do I think that Vick got a tougher sentence because he's Black? NO! I think that his sentence was more reflexive of his celebrity than his skin. I can go into all kinds of philosophical debates about the disparity of justice for Blacks in the system vs. whites but that's old. Enough guys here have already worn out that argument. I think the Feds pursued him because he was not only Black but also a celebrity. They tend to create diversions in order to remove the public's attention from their failures. How many of us have tabled the thought of Bush's approval rating being at all time lows. It just so happens that our forgetfulness surfaces at a time when the Dems are beginning to assert some kind of offensive against him. How about Peterson's story dominating the headlines at a time when the CTA is falling apart slowly but surely. What about Bush losing the Iraq argument but still refusing to bring the troops home along a reasonable timeline? How many of you have pushed that aside? Americans are sheep and Vick is so much a small part of what we should be concerned about. His sentencing is just one more thing they have set in front of us to distract us from them. There are guys out here, and more to the point, white guys out here shooting up malls, buses in Vegas, setting fires in California and other things more serious. When the Vick stuff died down, they inserted Barry Bonds indictment just in case we had forgotten that Blacks are the root of the things that ail our great republic. Is the system fair, of course not. We need to stop bowing to it's every whim. The federal government has us wrapped around it's finger and we are so blind that all we do is stay under it's thumb. Vick was guilty no doubt, but he's the victim of bad timing more than the killing of dogs. We Blacks need to stop looking for martyrs and start looking for the truth. Ernest...well done. Seems the same people keep dealing the race card on an issue not about color, but about right and wrong. Isn't it weird, the polarization. Not only do you have black and white. Now animal activists, and criminal court critics are abound. The logistics of it is that animal rights' activists are hating (and I do mean Hatin') on Vick because of his celebrity, just like they are hatin' on the Olson Twins. Animals are animals, and people are people, if you want Vick in jail permanently, then put all of us meat eaters in jail permanently because we bankroll more killing of animals than Vick ever has.

Vick was wrong, he deserved time, and for bankrolling the thing he will get more than the others (odd though, one defendant was already a criminal.) This does not make Vick the dumbest man in the world. Lord Conrad Black is about as silly as you can get for a billionaire, and even he isn't dumb, just got caught up. Vick made a mistake, actually, a bunch of mistakes, and he's gonna stay in jail for a while. If he does not ever suit up and play football again it still does not matter to him, he's already paid, and handsomely I must say.

His name is tarnished, his legend is a fallacy now, and people want to throw salt on his wounds. There are sports people who have done dumber things than Vick (Rae Carruth for killing his baby's mama, isn't he still in jail?), (the DUI king Leonard Little), and a host of others who have affected just the very fabric of the families they have touched negatively.

I will not fight the color battle because some of the black and non-black people on this post have already shown their intelligence to racism in america. I will just say that I am a grown man, I can choose to defend truth if I want. Also, I can choose to defend a lie if I want to, but both have consequences. To call Vick a derogatory names open up for me to be called derogatory names as well, if I choose to live by the law and follow the law, then I should sentence by the law as well, and not to make a statement because of someone's celebrity or color.

I just wish this would all go away so we can talk about the Bulls getting back to .500.

I've just read a few articles on that incident and none of them provides the race of the defendants or their victims (both groups are juevenile in age); Which, I'm assuming, means that you must have tracked down the skin complexion of the offenders on some "racial crime awareness" website, like the Nation.

That's where people always get tripped up when they bring up black crime with me. Your argument is that "black crime against whites is much higher than white crime against blacks. Therefore, racial profiling is good and blacks owe whites an apology and reparations."

Let me begin by saying this is not about Michaek Vick and the sentence he received although I believe the sentence was rather harsh. This is about his attire. When he appeared in court he was dressed in an outfit similar to that worn by individuals who worked on chain gangs. His attire was a reminder of the abuses these individuals often experienced.
A chain gang was a group of prisoners chained together to perform physically challenging labor such as chopping stone often along a highway. A single ankle shackle with a short length of chain was attached to a length of chain known as a leg iron. Some chains weighed 20 pounds. The outfit Vick wore was similar to that worn by these individuals.
What a person wears to court is the judge's decision. I question his requiring Vick to wear that outfit because it was similar to outfits worn by members of a chain gang. What was his motive? Was he sending a message? When mention is made of Vick or when he is discussed he is shown wearing that suit which depicts individuals who worked on chain gangs. That outfit depicted a time in America which America would like to forget. The majority of individuals who worked on chain gangs were black.

Spare us the patriotism, Keith. Could it be possible that football is more popular than boxing? For starters, you can watch it for free. Your argument is flimsy anyway. I'm still not sure what your point is regarding Vick, but the starting quarterback of an NFL team going to prison during the season would be a huge story no matter what color he was. When Tank Johnson was a relevant and current news story in this city, plenty of people were talking about him. Tony Dungy has had plenty of people talking about him too - remember he was the first black coach to win a Super Bowl? The "feel-good" stories just don't last very long and never will. Hmmmmm........ let's see, the current Home Run King is indicted for lying to a federal grand jury about possible steroid use and you can't understand why that is easier to talk about than Michael Jordan in 2007? It's highly unlikely Vick will be out in a year due to the fact that on a 23 month sentence he really only has to serve around 19 months due to the good conduct credit time off that he gets. He also has to be designated to an insitution, be deemed RDAP eligible, and then wait for a spot in an RDAP class. All that takes time. He may not even start a program for 2-3 months as the classes are usually booked up months in advance. So, by the time he hits an RDAP yard, he'll be down to 16 months left, then the BOP will credit him for the month he's already been in. The program itself takes 9 months to complete, that leaves 7 months, and he has to spend 6 months in custody at a halfway house as a program requirement. So maybe he'll get all of a month off. BIG DEAL!

I think what he did was cruel beyond words!!!!!! He should spend a life time in jail but our laws against cruetly to animals obviously isn't harsh enough. I have 3 pitbull dogs and they are loving and caring dogs. I hope he really thinks about this when he serves his 23 months. I think the judical system fail to provide justice on the day of his sentencing!!!
