Cubs trade Ohman, good riddance

| | Comments (38)

Will any Cubs fan miss Will Ohman. The Cubs traded him and Omar Infante today to Atlanta for reliever Jose Ascanio.

I did a separated-at-birth photo spread last season and compared Ohman to Randy Quaid. I thought if anyone was going to be mad, it would have been Quaid.
But I heard Ohman was mad. I'm sure it was because I included a little shot about how Cubs fans age 10 years every time he takes the mound. I think he gave up a grand slam that day.
Anyway, good riddance.

This trade is addition by subtraction no matter who the Cubs got back. See ya Will.

SEE YA! MR.....I will walk everybody when the game is on the line.

Nothing but bad things seemed to happen when "Bad Ohman" entered a game. I'm surprised anybody even wanted him.

Ohman short for "OH Man!!!! another blown lead!!!"

IT ALL COMES DOWN BACK TO NOT GETTING NOTHING FOR MR. JONES.

The Full Court Press blog must be desparate for topics.

Will Ohman? Who cares? He is/was a marginal reliever, suited better for Class AA than major league. He's the Cubs' version of Cliff Politte, so who the hell actually cares if he's gone?

I think this sounds like a great deal. Will Oh-man clearly was in Lou's doghouse, and probably wasn't going to contribute much this year after being demoted to AAA last year. Omar Infante won't be missed, since he never played a game with the Cubs. So basically we traded Jones and Ohman for one of Atlanta's top pitching prospects. This Ascanio kid had great numbers at AA and was good enough to skip AAA on his way to the majors. It'll be interesting to see if he makes the big league club this year, or if he'll start out at AAA. Either way it appears as though the 22 year old might have a pretty bright future.

This is a sign that Lou is in charge... Ohman was not Lou's kind of player, nor was Jones, Traschel, or Barrett. All gone. I think this sends a great message to the other players. And its not produce or get out... the message is "strive for excellence". As a long time suffering Cub fan I think I see light at the end of the tunnel.I Like how Lou and Jim are rebuilding the team... THE CUBS WILL BE GREAT IN '08!.

Ohman was/is a joke. Do the braves not watch tapes or view stats of the players they trade for? Thank you for the gift. Oh and Braves fans get ready to curse this day every time he comes to the mound this summer.......HAHA. This is our payback for giving you Maddux

The big picture is that this means we essentially traded Jones and Ohman for an AA pitcher. Ohman is not much of a pitcher. However, I don't think he was ever used correctly. He should have only been used against hitters who had a weakness for hitting curves or in garbage time. He was often sent in to face multiple hitters. He's not good enough for that. Now, can we go get a LH reliever that can actually get people out?

I think it is a good trade. ohman was not getting the job done and Infante wasnt the greatest piece when you already have 3 utility players already. (theriot, derosa, fonte) so i think he was expandable. and you traded them for a flaming throwing young gun who has a major upside to him. good trade and making more rooms for free agents and trades

Solid move for the Cubs. Baseball America said Ascanio had the best fastball in the Southern League last year. Ohman will be missed in the clubhouse, but with guys like DeRo and D-Lee I'm sure team chemistry won't be an issue.

Ohman seemed like a good interview...I liked him cuz he was funny....didn't seem to take himself too seriously...

Yeah, he struggled...but I root for a guy like him...

Now we have an AssCan..O..I'm loving these names

Fukudome Pie....Pie Soriano

"I'm coming for you, Andy Frain"

thank you jim! this guy made my gut cringe every time he stepped on the mound!what a waiste!i dont like the fact that they basically gave away jones. what can ya do though?

You guys are all forgetting - Atlanta actually has a pitching coach. Look for a large improvement in Ohman. After a couple of seasons of messing up Ascanio, he will be traded back to Atlanta to realize his potential.

Roman responds: I wish we could actually make a wager, at least on Ohman.

Miguel Cabrera may be coming?

So's Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

Ask Joe Cowley who he likes at Hollywood in the seventh, so I'll no which horse not to bet.

Roman responds: So Cowley reports the Sox expect to get Cabrera, which they confirm, and it's Cowley's fault the deal fell through?

This is good trade. Basically means, Jones, ohman and infante each aren't viewed by the rest of baseball teams as worth more than a class aa reliever, not a class aa starter, but a class aa reliever. So, if nothing else cubs team will have some less dead wood next year. Being stuck playing players like this day after day must be numbing for a manager, not to mention fans, who at least can drink to make it less upleasant an experience to watch such drivel.

So, essentially, the Cubs got a middle-inning prospect for their 2nd half MVP. Yeah, things are going well.

What big name is Mr. Cowley going to float today? Wait - never mind, I don't want to get my hopes up. Kenny Williams is like the guy at an auction who constantly raises his paddle but has no intention of actually making a purchase, just driving the final price up for the winner.

Cabrera went to the Tigers instead of the White Sox because in seven years Kenny Williams has built his farm system into the 29th best in baseball. Great job!

This trade is nothing more than a salary dump. Other teams are getting real difference makers, like miguel cabrera and dontrelle willis goin to detroit. The cubs are getting this guy jose ascanio with a 5 era when he pitched with atlanta. Jim hendry says this guy pitches 95 miles an hour, so did kyle farnsworth. Here we go again, the cubs doing nothing, and being quiet in the offseason, and the only major headlines coming out of cubs camp is they are raising ticket prices. The cubs will never win.

Roman responds: So Cowley reports the Sox expect to get Cabrera, which they confirm, and it's Cowley's fault the deal fell through?

Cowley was used like a....well u get the picture.

Well done taking off the blog topic though. Maybe add a new topic..biggest fool of Tuesday...Kenny or Joe Cowley...discuss.

To take a page from Kenny Williams...

"I want to go on record that I wanted to date Heather Locklear when I was younger. Oh yeah, I also wanted to date Pam Anderson before she had all of the plastic surgery..."

What a complete boob

Roman responds: So Cowley reports the Sox expect to get Cabrera, which they confirm, and it's Cowley's fault the deal fell through?

Romo - that argument is lame on so many levels...
With your logic, my stockbroker tells me to invest $20K in a company because they're telling him they're gonna kill the earnings estimates. Earnings come out bad...your logic says I need to blame the company right? Can't be the broker's fault.

Cowley is no different than any other reporter trying to break a story before everyone else. Win some, lose some. He lost this one. Don't make excuses for him...

Roman responds: Carl, if his source was wrong and the Sox came out and said "That was pure fiction. We never thought we were going to get Hunter or Cabrera," then I'd be with you. But that didn't happen! They confirmed they thought they would get both and EVERYBODY wrote it after the fact.

The trade for the flame-throwing kid prospect was very good one.
The chase for Fuku.... goes on.
But isn't there another lefthanded hitter of quality anywhere in the US that the Cubs could land?
Is Griffey untouchable?

How about Barry Bonds? He's available. The problem is that the phonies in the press and fandom have convicted the guy before a trial. I'd take Bonds ANYDAY! He would definitely take the Cubs to the World Series in year 100.

Who?

Roman responds: Hey, anybody seen Stuck in Wisconsin lately?

I HEARD ITS GOING DOWN...

Hendry is just clearing payroll to sign Fukudome. That's why Jones, Ohman and Infante are gone. Besides Ohman is bad. I will tune in to Braves games to watch him yell into his mitt after he gets "rocked". I just hope he's yelling, "I suck".

I would have traded Olman for a broken bat and a bag of balls.
THANK GOD!!

maybe the trade was a bad ohman?

Roman sez: "So Cowley reports the Sox expect to get Cabrera, which they confirm, and it's Cowley's fault the deal fell through?"

Bad info is bad info.

Since when did "Kill the messenger" go out of style?

Roman responds: I don't get it. It wasn't bad info. It IS what the Sox expected. Should he not tell you what they're expecting and just report it when it's done?

You're right Roman. This is more of an indictment on Kenny Williams than Cowley. Williams thinks his guys are worth more than they are. Not a good judge of talent. He never had a chance for Cabrera because he doesn't have the good young talent that other teams have. Even Guillen said he didn't really think they had a chance. Because Guillen is a good evaluator of MLB talent.

Roman responds: I don't get it. It wasn't bad info. It IS what the Sox expected. Should he not tell you what they're expecting and just report it when it's done?

Teams say stuff all the time to garner attention/false hope. Is it out of the his realm of job description that he might want to check with the Marlins to see if it had any credibility?

Suffice it to say Romo...it appears a lot of us "don't get" you and your apologist view for Cowley. Let it go...he reported a story that had no legs.

Roman responds: First of all, you're the only one who seems not to get what I'm talking about. And secondly, he wasn't the only one who wrote it.
So when Kenny Williams says after the fact that he thought he was going to get Cabrera, that's garnering false hope?

Let me make sure I get this now since "I'm the only one who doesn't get it".

First - Where/when exactly did Williams say he thought he was going to get Cabrera? The line I heard is that they took a shot.
Second - So Cowley should take all trade rumors as gospel from the mouth of Kenny? There isn't any obligation to verify with the other teams sources? I would say from here on out, he better.
Finally - If this is such a non-event, why did you take the blog off? You're reason is that "things were changing so quickly". Don't they always when it comes to trades? Come on...fess up..you took it off to try to protect a colleague from looking silly.

Roman respods: It was outdated. Why leave something up to discuss when it's not going to happen? I'm posting all of your comments about it, so who am I protecting?
And Joe didn't report the Marlins thought it was going to happen. He said the Sox expected it to happen. Everybody reported it.
Another site reported the Sox were in play for Andruw Jones. Kenny came out and said that's not true. He didn't come out and say the same thing about Hunter or Cabrera.
All Joe reported was the Sox expected to get Cabrera. It was the truth.

Now if they can just get rid of Eyre and Dumpster....
Anyone who thinks either of them (esp. Dumpster) will help
the Cubs AT ALL is nuts.
Chris De Luca is crazy.
I see this happening: Dempster goes back to starting.
He sucks, as usual, but Lou can pull him out early to stop
the bleeding. He ends up being a waste of a rotation spot.
Howry or Marmol is the closer. (Hopefully Marmol.)
Then, finally, they realize they have to get rid of him.
They realize they should have gotten rid of him two years ago.
Remember this: when the Cubs went on their hot streak in June,
where was Dempster?
On the DL.

I bet we all thought the same thing about Jon Leister last year...hmmm what happened to him??? Something about a ring....
He was ugly too you know...he didn't get any prettier..just more effective...in fact I am a bit more concerned that the Cubs have had more ugly pitchers than bad pitchers. Just doesn't bode well for a
team that is the face of Chicago.

May the saints be praised!! Wee Willy has happily departed. Now if they get rid of some other turkeys, things might look up for next year. Scott E. should start to sweat a little bit too, although he came back toward the end of the season. Cub left-handers in general were close to pathetic, as was the Cub hitting against anyone else's left-handers. Hopefully that tradition will be "more honored in the breach than the observance." ( Thought you might like that "Hamlet" quote, Roman, singularly out of context as it obviously is ).

Roman responds: What team did he play for?

Roman,he played for the Stratford on Avon bards.
