Is Derrick Rose the nation's best player?

| | Comments (19)

At least one Web site - nbadraft.net - projects former Simeon star and Memphis freshman Derrick Rose as the No. 1 pick in next year's NBA Draft.

It will be interesting to see how Rose does in college and compared to the other great freshmen like Kansas State's Michael Beasley, USC's O.J. Mayo and Indiana's Eric Gordon.

Jay Bilas says he's the best of the bunch.

What do you think?

I don`t know about the nation,but thats close .
One of the greatest HS players from this area since Kevin Garnett.
Derrick Rose has all the tools,a Dwayne Wade type player.
Maybe the Bulls will be in position to draft him.

I like these guys...too....

1. Roy Hibbert, 7-2, 278, Sr., Georgetown — He's improved as much in three years in college as any big man in recent memory. Finished with 19 points and six boards against Greg Oden and Ohio State in the Final Four.

2. Kevin Love, 6-10, 260, Fr., UCLA — The best passing man since Wes Unseld, Love can also score on the block and is a terrific rebounder. True, he hasn't played a college game yet. But he'll take little time making the adjustment.

3. Kyle Singler, 6-8, 220, Fr., Duke — He'll play both forward spots, but we're going to classify him as a wing. He does it all: can score, defend and even gets on the glass.

NO.

I just saw Eric Gordon play..If Rose is better than that, I'd love to watch it.. Hoosiers!!!...Point Guard/Shooting Guard, tho...ok, Rose is a better one and Gordon is a better 2....

Not allowing these kids to go pro saved College Hoops....and you're right, Roman....it's gonna be interesting to watch these kids play

First time in years for me....Watching I.U. the other day and seeing all the players in college hoops....I have a pulse again

As an Illini fan, it grates me to say it but Eric Gordon is the best freshman to come along in twenty years. That's why it's so painful to watch his coming out party after being dumped on by Mr. Gordon and his family. At least it will be a one and done scenario.

It is really stupid to make comments like Rose is the best in the nation or that "Love is the best passing big man since Unseld (I think that Walton was better. Unseld just fed Elvin Hayes)" when these kids have played a grand total of one or two games and have yet to play against established talent. Love is too light to play PF, let alone C in the NBA right now. Mayo, Rose and Gordon have lots to prove. They aren´t in HS dribbling through a bunch of star-struck kids playing ole D. More than half of the "can´t miss" prospects coming out of high school quickly get exposed as having built their HS stats and reputations playing against smaller, weaker, slower and far-inferior talent. For every can´t miss that goes on to NBA stardom, there are dozens of Telfores, Marcus Liberties, Teddy Grubbses, etc, etc, etc. Give these guys at least a half a conference season before anointing them the next Walton, Lebron or Magic. It does indeed look like a great freshman class, but lets wait and see!

Roman responds: Jay Bilas said it, and he's not quite as prone to hyperbole as Dickie V. It's fun to speculate.

Great post Fuff! Gotta wait. There was no talent more highly touted than Marcus Liberty! I saw him with my own eyes. He was dominating HS like LaBron. Wasn't a pro player and i've learned to wait.

That said, I am excited about ALL of these youngsters! I am so happy we live in the video age because I have seen some amazing Kevin Love footage! He broke a backboard! And I LOVE Dickie V!

Have to agree it is WAY TOO EARLY to distinguish one player above a possible twenty others who may come out of nowhere to mold into an eye popping prospect. I saw plenty of Derrick Rose and this guy is without a doubt not only a super talent but not an ounce of baggage within him considering the area from which he grew up. That alone shows a total commitment to the game he LOVES and I truly believe he is the best ATHLETE in the bunch to go along with his excellent court sense. Gordons' tough but I see a selfish side to him at times that may hamper his stock. I really like O.J. Mayos' game, A LOT, but this guys a rap sheet waiting to happen. I also remember seeing a kid last year in a few H.S. tournaments that caught my eye. Don't recall his first name but his last was Greene. If this kid fills out a little bit he's gonna make some N.B.A. team very happy to have him. Even if he doesn't fill out he should be O.K.; I remember telling myself the same thing about Tayshawn Prince when he was in H.S. but the skinny kid with the poor posture is doing just fine with Detroit.

How about we do this again after the Christmas tourneys?

Rose sure looks like the real deal. If Calapari can`t get over the final hump with this bunch, it will prove my hunch correct that the guy is another in a long line of shady, yet great recruters who couldn`t coach his way out of a YMCA tourney...Mayo makes me think of JR Ryder for some reason: an awsome talent waiting to implode!... It is shaping up to be an interesting year. I don`t see any clear cut favorite. With so much young talent, lots of teams wont really round into form until early Feb.

Right...too early to tell...but you cant no look either!

Send Derrick a letter from Natalya: Stay another year, you need to work on your shot, and decision making. In the NBA it takes more then skill to become the best, so learn from the coaches, and get a little bigger. You can't break-down players like you did at Simeon, and doing at Memphis as easily in the NBA.
Also, tell Derrick to call his mom, she's cooking lasagna.

I agree! He's smart, agile and knows the game. He will probably go Pro nexts year, First round. He has a 43 inch vertical along with a jump shot! Most or none of these bloggers, have no idea, what this kid can do. First round 2008, 4th or fifth pick easy.

I can help him with his shot.

but he would have to come to Phx!

Derrick Rose is sooooooo sexy!!! Yes he is the best handz down. Too many hataz on this board

Did anyone watch the U. Conn game? Rose showed us just who he is at THIS TIME: A freshman with no experience who has unlimited upside, but still has a lot to learn. On the team he is playing for, I will be impressed when he has a game against big time talent and his final line shows 1 assist for every two points he scores. He looked more interested in himself than in in The Memphis Tigers last night.

i think hes the best since Kevin Garnet the bulls should draft him so we can have a chance to win alot more championship.

eric gordon is the best, eric gordon is like dwyane wade + the outside jump shooting.

Yes,he and Eric Gordon...Now find a way to get them to the Bulls.
