Game day: Bears vs. Broncos

| | Comments (62)

If you can believe, the Bears are favorites to win today. The spread is just 1 1/2 points. Denver's coming off two wins but have a short week and is on the road.

Although the Broncos have two really good corners, I think Rex Grossman can do some damage in the air. Then again, he could throw two long touchdown passes on the first two possessions and the Bears coaching staff won't let him throw again.

Cedric Benson fans likely will their wish with carries today.

Denver ends Bears hopes.

You would think they should win, but the way this Season is going I wouldn't be surprised to see them go down. It's going to come down to Rex against Cutler. It will be like Thunderdome- 2 enter, one leaves. HA!HA!

It’s become painfully clear just how old the offensive line is. Regardless of the outcome of this game, the Bears are done for this season and they should be getting Josh Beekman and Anthony Oakley some starts.

As halftime approaches, this team doesn't look anything like a playoff team. The coaching is bad, the playcalling is bad, the tackling is bad, and most of all the blocking is bad.

Bring Peterson! Bring Peterson! Bring Peterson! Are you happy now???

Release Rex and Ced and watch them explode on OTHER teams.

more massive case of the dropsies by various Bear receivers.

what happened to Berrian? he's disappeared.

defense is playing fairly well though.

Broncos just found a play the Bears can't stop.

quick step, counter pitch.

huge play after huge play - same play.

where would the Bears be without Devin Hester?

Ced looks like he'll be out for a long time.

Hey.. Brandon Marshall, long bomb! he's on 2 of my fantasy teams!
hahahaha

If I'm Devin Hester, (and I wish to God that I were) I'm not asking the Bears what they're going to pay me ... I'm TELLING THEM!

They can either nod their heads in agreement and acquiesce, or they can kiss my ass.

Their choice.

If Hester wasn't on the team, I wouldn't watch one minute of these horrible games.

Who do we blame this week? Defense played their butts off. Archuletta is terrible. I have no other description for him.

New England clinched their division today. With 10 wins, they have more than victories than the Bears and Bulls combined.

WOW.....where would the Bears be without Hester.....

GREAT play by Berrian! Tie game.

Rex proved his mettle on that drive, despite some drops!

EASILY the most exciting Bear game of the year.

best 4th quarter they've played all year.

Rex came up big. Berrian made great play.

give Ron Turner his due for that 1st down call on 1st down in overtime resulting to that big gain for Desmond Clark. (was a damn pretty and perfect pass too)

if they can somehow capitalize on the excitement and emotion of this game, they might be competitive for the rest of the year

(though as excited as I am, I still don't think this is a real playoff team)

I'm STUNNED!!

BEARS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Devin Hester is underpaid! He won that game by himself.
Before we get our hopes up, let us not forget that the Broncos are nowhere near the top teams so I still say it is a mistake to keep trying to win against those type of bad teams and crawl into the playoffs. This team is not good enough to beat the NFCs elite because Hester will not win every game. Play for the draft pick for next year and fix the obvious problems on the line. "It" played better despite the turnovers, but Hester is the real reason we won that game.
I should be happy about the win, but all I can think about is that without Devin Hester this team is boring to watch or cheer for.
I wonder if he will be lost to free agency?
They can't place the franchise tag on more than one player, so who will be the one to go?
A win this week! Great! That means we lose next week...ugh...this year sucks!

OH YEAH! It figures! I turned the channel when it went to 33-20 Denver...and missed the comeback. Sheeeeessshhh!

Lovie, can you release Adam Archuletta as soon as possible? Thanks.

Bears will win the next 9 in a row - you heard it here first.
5 more regular season wins to finish the season at 10-6 to get into the playoffs, then 4 straight playoff wins to end the season with the Superbowl trophy.

All I have to say is Da Bears!!!!!!!!!!!

Play of the game---REPLACING Miller for St. Clair

Run of the game...What a CLUTCH TD!

Catch of the game Berrian(who else?)

Score of the game...Bears 37 Broncos 34.

What a rush!

What an amazing game, please Bear's fans, BELIEVE, have you not seen stranger things?

I FEEL LIKE DENNY GREEN.
NEVER HAVE I BEEN HAPPIER TO BE WRONG.
Rex just hit the cash register....

well all you nay say'ers wadda say now..i know Denver sucks, get behind your team or get another one.......or perhaps get a life bunch of Chicago "A" holes...you people will never understand football.

Man, just as I was about to give up on these guys they come back and win. That was a great game! A great game! Why the Broncs kept kicking to hester I don't know. Play of the season was the perfect pass to Berrian on 4th down with seconds to go. Great pass and better catch!St. Clair needs to play the rest of the season for Fred Miller. Adrian Peter resembles a Bear running Back...strong, tough, smart, and most of all...all heart! Believe Fans this team has heart. Stop bickering about the QB and stand by your team. Go Bears!!!

Hester's second return td was horribly played by Denver, their guy could've run that one back untouched saurbrun or whatever his name is our tackle fred miller archuletta most crappy players kind of excited benson's OUT!

KeITH INSERTS FOOT IN MOUTH...

(oh wait...this isnt the headline thread....my bad)

well well well....its fun to watch all the people who appear to almost PRAY WE LOSE....eat it.

well...bears win another fun one....not everyone can be the Patricheats every year people!!!

This was one of those wins that felt good. Team win.

I also liked that Urlacher got pissed, we need more of that.

Benson suks and should be benched; Rex had another lucid moment, thankfully!! Standouts: Hester, Peterson, Berrian, Clark, Gould and as painful as it is to admit, Rex.

amazing how stupid shanahamigan is for kicking to hester. without this, denver would have stompped the bears. sad thing is, the bears still think gross is the answer!! hah, watching the bears suffer next week will be a treat.

If the offensive line would give Grossman more protection, he can be more productive. He is an excellent passer and could easily become as good as Peyton Manning given time, the kind of protection that Brady and Manning get, some receivers who do not have stone hands, and a running game that can muster more than 3 yards a carry. How about building the future Bears around Grossman?

I DON'T THINK BENSON GETTING HURT WOULD CALL HIM SUCKING.THE MAN HAS BEEN TURNING IT UP THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS AS HIS YPR WOULD INDICATE.BY THE WAY IS STICKUM STILL LEGAL.

I'm with you B about Urlacher getting angry. But to take it out on a poor defenseless football when Marshall was retrieving it was beyond stupid. I'm sorry I can't give him a pass about that. He's the leader and should be taking his frustrations out on players before the whistle blows. Also,Miller and Archuleta need to be cut by Monday morning. Please tell me that Miller is hurt because there is no way that someone healthy will play like that. It was a great team effort but honestly the two guys who were the goats at certain times( Hester and Rex) came out and redeemed theirselves. If we had lost it might've been back to questioning what to do with Rex. But him coming up and sealing the deal will go a long way in impressing me. Didn't Manning Jr. cry about not playing a few weeks ago? Now he needs to shut up about it because he got beat like he was a rookie. After Benson got hurt I said that we'd be a better balanced team. Man, didn't Peterson run with some authority? Who tripped up Benson on that one play? The earlier run,not the one he was hurt on. I didn't see anyone touch the guy but he fell like he was hit. I'm sorry he got hurt after running for a 21 yard gain. It gave the impression that he was just about to turn the corner on being a decent back. Now we may never know. Didn't Wolfe's 25 yard run make you forget that Benson was hurt? Too bad It came at the end of a half and he couldn't add to that. Oh well. One game at a time. GO BEARS!!!

My biggest complaint today...too many dropped passes! There were some passes that weren't the best, but the ones that hit the receivers in the hands or the numbers need to be caught!!!

But I'm in a good mood, ask my wife. I'm annoying her with my giddiness.

I know perople say the NFC sucks, but why couldn't we play AFC west more often. We went 3-1 against them and if we got to face each team twice we could easily get 3 more victories. Well, not easily because the Bears don't do anything easily.

I just want to enjot this victory and not get my hopes up because every time I do, they lay an egg the next week.

Here's to somebody realizing how to give Hester the ball on offense.

Rex is still more of a liability than an asset...today was no exception...he fumbled "on his own"....nice...even nicer to know it's expected of him...and it happens...."every time"

We ought to call him Wets...every time someone gets near him he pees and gives up the ball....Yeah.... Wets

Ced is outta the way, tho... you all got to see what a real RB does....And don't look Ethel, but now we have a 3 down back...who runs with more power..better vision...blahblahblah...like I said

Hester, Tillman, and AP....the reason we won...and the reason Rex's 2 fumbles and 1 interception didn't cost us the game..

and maybe we found an OLine unit...for the time being

Adewale Ogunleye...thank you, too

I couldn't be happier for AP...finally

"Without RexandCed"....one down...one to go...hope we don't lose waiting for it..

Our offense stinks.PERIOD! Anybody that has been on the Rex alert, knows he is not the answer and neither is Cedric.I'm sorry.
Send them to the pawn shop while you still can get something for them. And if Orton ever decides to leave, good for him. For not given the same treatment as Rex, not to take anything away from Griese. Woe the day Hester gets taken out of game cause of an injury. Your defense can't hold it's own anymore. What's left Coach Lovie?

Does Mariotti EVER say more then two good things about Chicago sports teams?

Rex does play better when he gets good pass protection. I've been lurking for a while this season and I've been shocked by the amount of vitriol aimed at Rex by people who call themselves Bears fans. Perhaps my years in LA have softened this native Southsider, but c'mon, Rex may be a major bonehead sometimes but he's not a child molester or serial killer and he doesn't deserve such hate and disdain. When he's on his passes are a thing of beauty and a joy to behold, and I'm glad we got to see some of them today. It was a very nice win for the team and the fans.

Reality: Without Hester, the Bears got out coached, outplayed, and Rex still stinks.

Without doubt the most exciting a game of this season. Good to see the team come together and not give up. Hester is a God but pass out the stickum to our recievers! What the F***?? Olsen, Muhammed and berrien all dropped too many passes in this game. Rex's rating would have been higher were it not for these drops. Add another name to the s***can list. RON TURNER SUCKS!! A third grader could see what play is being called every time! Get an offensive coordinator who isn't so consistantly predictable. O line blocking sucked as well. Peyton Manning couldn't muster a 30 QB rating behind that decripit bunch. Miller and Ouchaleta have got to go!

Great win For THE BELOVED BEARS!!!!!!

That was one wild game. Hester is really something to see. Grossman played pretty well down the stretch when it counted. Have to hand it to him for sticking with it and giving his team a chance to win the game. Nice to see him play well, and it seemed like the line firmed up some there too for awhile and gave him some more time. Fun game to watch.

Culzie you didn't strike me as a "i told you so kinda guy", but you earned it. Go for yours man! I am an honest person - I trully in my heart did not think the BEARS would win with him under center. I looked up and down our remaining games and said I just didnt believe we could beat any of those remaining teams. Rex to Berrian beat me. Was a heck-of-a throw and catch for the win. And the pass to the TE to set up Gould for the win was clutch. I did NOT enjoy watching Turner give his postgame remarks. He called Rex "Wreck"! I was crackin up. I don't like turner. He looks like an ego maniac. He was soooooo close to the camera too! Smug-mugness! I went way out on the limb, but it will be interesting to see exactly how wrong I was about Rex.

Keith..its just that your(s) and fairly Hitman and others Rabid Attacks on Rex and Ced border on the Insane....and thats when you lose me. People wishing that THEY DO BAD, whilst they wear BEARS COLORS is INSANE.

I love your passion, just focus it in the right direction buddy!

I still love ya!

I'm with you B about Urlacher getting angry. But to take it out on a poor defenseless football when Marshall was retrieving it was beyond stupid. I'm sorry I can't give him a pass about that. He's the leader and should be taking his frustrations out on players before the whistle blows.

Good point!

Bogey thanks for that thread. Good reading! They brought out some great points.

Marshall could be the Next TO

I know Im taking him in my fantasy league next year!

Honestly, Grossman's fumbling problems were bad, but he really did play well the remainder of the game. That interception early on was both on Berrian and Grossman. Berrian got out positioned for a ball the way a basketball player boxes out his man for a rebound. Once the defender looked up for the ball, he backed into Berrian legally and pushed him out of the way.

Then there were the numerous drops that would have been first downs. Its got to be difficult to make good passes after sitting on the sidelines most of the game. If those passes weren't dropped, then the offense would have been in the game longer and would have been able to establish a rhythm (not to mention that those drops would have increased Grossman's numbers as catches). On Moose's illegal contact call late in the game, he still should have caught the ball. He is washed up and should not be the 1 or 2 receiver. As for Rashied Davis, I was glad to see his return to the offense, although he too had a dropped pass on third down that was right in his hands and would have resulted in a first down. He did make a big play in the fourth quarter on the final drive.

Wish the Bears do bad??...never....I said RexandCed were busts the day we drafted them.....because of what I "know"....

Talent evaluating...and I rule at it

If wishes were horses...beggars would ride 'em, culzie

LOL, Saddle Up, Rex fans..

Wish?..Me?..EAD

Culzie that was a good response. Not cocky - even for you. But get it right...I root for the Bears, I just don't have ANY confidence in T-Rex. But my prediction was born from the poor play of the rest of the team - save Mr. Hester. I simply felt that if T-rex wasnt getting the support he had from last year, he simply couldn't win. What is scarry is that I would have been right, but football fortune shined on the Bears. O-line came out and played much better, the Defense was better than good, but Mr. Hester was nothing short of sensational. He is a clutch player with a short term memory when it comes to mistakes. I was happy I was wrong. And happy to watch the BEARS win! Got nothin but love for you and the Bears Culzie!

I can't wait for the Bears to be put out of their misery and I hope it comes soon. If they keep winning against sorry ass teams, then the draft pick for next year is going to be in the middle of the pack instead of having a high one that could eventually turn into more picks (we need them).
Before you start with your stupid support the team and why are you being so negative response, let me tell you that while the way Hester saved the game and won it was exciting, I am not stupid or easily fooled. I am not going to make stupid predictions like "the Bears are going to run the table and not lose again for the season" thats just wishful thinking.
They have not won two games in a row all year and Hester is not capable (as good as he is) of winning every game. The defense still sucks, "IT" didn't play a great game, although I have to give "IT" credit for that last drive and the win came against a terrible team. I am a realist and not dillusional. I know what this team is and i also know that they need a lot of help for next year. The kind of help that can come from veterans or draft picks that can contribute. Every win that the Bears have now will only decrease the value of that draft pick for next year. Be realistic! They are not good enough to run the table and make an impact in the playoffs, so why waste the golden opportunity and not play young players so that they can develop for next year and be ready to replace the players that will leave in free agency?
This year is over and with every terrible win, they are setting themselves up for another bad year by not learning from the mistakes of this year. Why must I suffer with this team and their bad mangement?
I wont be fooled...I am not easily swayed or convinced that obvious problems are magically fixed, why am I the only one?

I know the Bears's season has been a big disappointment to us fans, but what bothers me more than that is when people start bloggging about how the Bears are gonna lose and how they suck even before the game is over. There were people at halftime counting them out of this game, and I knew they were capable of winning- in spite of the dropped passes and stupid penalties. Listen, if you are true fans then support your team until 00:00 and then if they lose you have every right to rip them a new one. I will take a win anyday- even an ugly one.

This is not about ugly wins or supporting the team, its about the future and keeping the playoff caliber team for many years instead of the one year superbowl team like the 85 Bears. They had a chance to turn things around, but things only got worse and now they are even worse than that if you can imagine that. The team is not a playoff caliber team right now and crawling into the playoffs is a HUGE mistake that will hurt the team in the long run. I'd rather watch them shut it down and rest the hurt players before they do serious damage and let potential starters get experience. If you lose, Great, it means a higher draft pick that can be traded down or used on a Good lineman.
It's not like this team doesn't have potential, but this year is not the year and going all out to win is a HUGE mistake that will haunt them down the line. Not good enough this year to win Superbowl so don't screw up next year too!

Keith...lets keep it straight..its not Mr.Hester...its The Hesterizer from now on!

M&M I gotta respect that logic. I just didnt look at the results of winning.

Alicia M. you are right in principle but wrong in application. BEARS players, organization and family has that burden. THEY ought to root like that. That kind of devotion is saved only for US TROOPS. Us fans and MEDIA are duty bound to complain - before, during and AFTER the game!!! My boo just might strike the right nerve in the coach or player and help them to CHANGE what they are doing! Mariotti and the Whitesox were symbiotic in 05! And when they won - it made picking up that newspaper a MUST for me! And when I did, I found an apologetic, gleeful Marriotti. We are all BEARS fans and express our allegiance differently.

Those last two drives of the game were awesome. Rex looked like Tony Romo on those plays. The playcalling was much better this game. I especially liked that play-action pass on the last drive. That 4-receiver set was was the perfect cover fro AP on the run. His rushing touchdown was highlight material.

Hitman:

"'Without RexandCed'....one down...one to go...hope we don't lose waiting for it.."

No, you're hoping we don't win.

M & M:

"Before we get our hopes up, let us not forget that the Broncos are nowhere near the top teams so I still say it is a mistake to keep trying to win against those type of bad teams and crawl into the playoffs. "

So if you're not guaranteed to win, you shouldn't even try? That's a sad way to live.

"'It' played better despite the turnovers, but Hester is the real reason we won that game."

That's really not necessary. Do you have to refer to those you don't like as being sub-human? It's a nasty habit.

M&M - I hear what you're saying, but I just don't think a team should ever give up. What if the Colorado Rockies followed your advice? They were 6.5 games out and in 4th place in their division with only two weeks left. They ended up winning 14 out of 15 and going to the World Series. Plus, the Bears have a track record for long winning streaks -- 8 in a row in 2005 and 7 in a row in 2006. You're probably right that the Bears won't make the playoffs, I just want them to die trying, that's all.

Urlacher, Manning Jr., and Archuleta each had two key whiffs at tackles yesterday resulting in 145 additional yards of offense which last year may have been MAYBE 10 extra yards. Number 54 is not making plays like before and I can't believe it is anything other than his back, because you don't lose his talent overnight. Numbers 20, 24, 38 and 69 are just playing out of their league, with D. Manning getting a rookie reprieve. Without some Devine Intervention (a.k.a. turnovers galore, touchdown returns galore, and Mike Brown) yesterdays game was just a smoke screen for what we've become this year, A ONE TRICK PONY. Unless Vasher heels pretty fast, and McBride gets a chance at a safety position (I don't care how big he is, he can tackle and anything will be a colossal improvement) Devin Hester better eat all his oats before every game.

I remember the 85' Patriots playing over their heads for the last half of the season, and having every lose ball bounce their way, so I'm not counting the Bears out just yet. But I also remember those same 85' Patriots getting BOUNCED by a Bears team who exposed New England for what they really were, an average team who was winning by smoke and mirrors. When the smoke clears on this Bear season those faces in the mirror better change because the wrinkles are really starting to show.

Kudos to Wrecks for playing well the last 15 minutes of the game. Up until that point, the Bears offense had scored 6 points on two fieldgoals. Not real good production given that they started at the 40 yard line most of the day. I will acknowledge that Wrecks suffered from a lot of dropped balls. I was extremely disappointed in Olsen's play. He's got to be better than that against a so-so Denver defense.

Re AP, well, I am going to wait. Yes, he had one good run, but his average yards per carry was less than 3. Didn't Benson take a pounding on this blog for those numbers? Yes, AP "Looked" like he was running hard and really trying (again, complaints aimed at Benson all season), but it really comes down to production -- and AP produced... well... okay. The fact that he can catch does add a dimension that Benson can't deliver, but I also don't want Wrecks to fall into the habit of dinking the ball to AP for 5 yard completions on 3rd and 14.

All in all, a win is a win -- even a gift wrapped one courtesy of the Bronco's Shanahan -- once considered an intelligent football headcoach.

Deflation hawk is either joking or smoking crack. The Bears will NOT make the playoffs. They WILL lose at least a couple more games and *hopefully* make some good personnel decisions when the season ends. The team DOES have a lot of heart and that's why we're all fans. GO BEARS!

Roman, no thread on Ced Benson? I actually thought Mariotti had a pretty good point today, one that I never even noticed at the game. But yeah, usually hurt players get some kind of acknowledgment as they are leaving the field, but nobody made a sound at all as he was being carted off. It was just like "this does not look good."

Dave, I like your point. Keeping my posts to a minimum this week, I'm on vacation :)
