Bonds is indicted, are you surprised?
Most people who follow the legal system were shocked when news spread that Barry Bonds has been indicted, figuring if the feds hadn't made their case by now, they would more than likely give up.
But some speculate that Bonds' former personal trainer Greg Anderson has grown tired of sitting in jail and has decided to cooperate. There's no word if that's the case. In fact, his attorneys say he has not cooperated.
It's possible the Feds have other evidence and just figured they don't need Anderson any longer.

Of course not. It's like I said 5 months or so ago; at any time they can come back and slap you with an asterisk.

Why waste a plethora of keystrokes when the crystal ball displayed Rex being named the starting QB, AGAIN! And knowing this society will tarnish Barry Bonds accomplishments at ANY COSTS?
Major news story, they poot like everyone, also...*sheesh*...

You're kidding, right? How could anyone be SURPRISED? The guy has been leaving a trail of slime behind him for years. Bonds is the perfect example of everything that is wrong with baseball. The best sports story you've run all year is the one where Bonds said he will refuse to go to the Hall of Fame if they stamp an asterisk on his record-breaking ball. I say: Let's get that baby stamped NOW! I only hope that they don't allow him to make his acceptance speech from prison. His image would just dampen the whole ceremony.

not as surprised as I would be if I heard someone say they honestly thought Bonds wasn't pumped full of roids and HGH...
a hot air balloon with his head on it would be perfect right about now..

The Joey the Clown once said that they could indict a piece of fruit. But seeing that he got convicted maybe there is more to things than what he thought. The federal government is relentless and after getting Vick to confess after his cronies caved in maybe Anderson did the same thing. Who cares. He isn't a Giant anymore and is really a man without a team. He is destroyed one way or the other.

Who could possibly be surprised? Even his mis-guided supporters can't be surprised. What they should be is ashamed, as should Mr. Bonds. Taking the drugs, whether banned or not, is cheating no matter what you call it, but it pales against the backdrop of his continual lying. The only debate left is whether Mr. Bonds is truly lying, or is his pathology so deep, and has he told the lie so often that he honestly believes it himself?

Can we BLOG about something new? I knew Bonds and his Charlie Brown sized head were pumping back in 1999. Why is this a big story. Let's talk baseball without the Selig-ized crud......
Posted by: Allan Sprehe | November 15, 2007 07:33 PM
If Bonds doesn`t give the asterik ball to Cooperstown, perhaps he can sell it to some creepy memorabilia dealer in a seedy off the strip Vegas hotel room. ..The sad thing to me is that somehow Selig and the boys will use this (perhaps Barry will be the fall guy) to take the attention away from the epidemic of cheaters who are starting to be exposed... When will the doo doo hit the fan for the NFL???Has training "technology" changed so much in the past 20 years that the average size of the players is 25-30% more than prior to the 80`s. I guess it is just a coincidence that the average athelete has gotten so much bigger, faster, etc since designer drugs and masking agents came along. Give me a break.I remember Irlacher as a 210 lb. saftey at The U of New Mexico (My alma Matter) and then just a few years later he was sporting 30-40 pounds of extra muscle and a bloated looking face... Why don`t they just make roids legal in sports and make it a real freak show instead of trying to cover up what is already obvious to those fans who aren`t wearing rose-colored glasses. The sad thing is that we eat it up. I imagine that if they had clean and dirty leagues, the dirty leagues would have much larger fan bases.

I, for one, believe that he juiced. But regardless of his actual guilt or innocence, the fact remains that a prosecutor can ask a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and they'll usually oblige.
What surprises me is that this is a federal grand jury, and they usually don't press charges unless they have a reasonable chance to convict.
I'll be interested to see if they have any hard evidence, or if they'll strictly rely on the hearsay testimony of people with whom they have cut deals.
Either way I hope this ruins him, because he's a miserable S.O.B.

I doubt if anyone could be surprised on Bonds indictment.Bonds may be the poster person for alleged use of steroids. But many others took the roids & got away scott free. Not a huge Bonds fan but he seems to get all the heat.
Posted by: Joe H | November 15, 2007 08:49 PM
Hey,so they indicted....So what..they can indict a ham sandwich.
As far the asterisk goes.....Go a head.....then formed the line around every major league stadium in America.....Don`t stop there
Go to Boston New England Patriots Spy gate...All that film was never destroyed....But since thats America new love child nobody said anything.
So go ahead and indict him...bunch of hypocrites.
All a farce.

Looks like you're right, Roman - the judge ordered that Greg Anderson be released from jail. I wonder what Bonds' "fans" think now.
Posted by: Julie B. | November 16, 2007 07:06 AM
No I'm not surprised. Bonds cares about Bonds. I believe he saw the attention that Big Mac and Sosa got in 1998 and wanted that. I believe he along with anyone else that juiced has hurt the game of baseball. Now younger kids think well if Barry can do it so can I. I hope he never plays another out in MLB and that they take all his stuff out of the HOF. I guess Ecko and the fans weren't that far off his rocker putting a * on the ball.
Posted by: Matt | November 16, 2007 07:43 AM
I only hope they aggressively pursue ALL, who have used or been involved - not just him. But it wont surprise me if Barry is the only one in MLB they punish. Its as petty as it gets. We got 10 cops shooting a man to death and putting handcuffs on his dead body. But that won't get an investigation. A man playing a GAME has to be investigated for 4-5 years.
Posted by: Keith Lifetime Southsider | November 16, 2007 08:01 AM
Surprised...uhhh...NO.
When the Feds want something or someone, they usually get it.
Combine that with the litany of BALCO athletes (Marion Jones also professed her innocence in front of a bunch of cameras years back), as well as the immenent Mitchell report which might name as many as 150 bball players, and you have the steroid/HGH walls crumbling down finally.
Supposedly (this is 4x removed from someone who probably knows) contributors to the Mitchell case put the final nail in the Feds' case against Bonds. Also...expect a few VERY notable chicago players to be named.

AGAIN! And knowing this society will tarnish Barry Bonds accomplishments at ANY COSTS? ...(Too scared to put name).
Well....i guess it has nothing to do with Barry sticking Needles in his A** .....did Society....force him to stick siringes in his back side??
The charges say he lied 19 times under oath and also had multiple positive tests for ANABOLIC STEROIDS...
Come on...(annonymous)....get real...this has nothing to do with society...and everything to do with Barry.
Maybe the hall of fame can have a Needle sticking out of Barry's Asterisk!!

I had to take a few hours before I responded to this one. I'll tell you what Roman, I still have a few questions because it's easy to believe the indictment is the end only due to the fact that it's Bonds and that is what Amerikkka wants.
Question 1:
Why did it take 4 years? They supposedly had a positive test from 2000. That should have been all that they needed.
Question 2:
Why leak it to the media without first allowing Bonds and his attorneys to review it? Sounds like they're trying to build up a jury pool and are not comfortable with their chances in San Francisco. The best way to build a shaky case is to try it in the court of public opinion.
Question 3:
If they are not relying upon Greg Anderson, who by his lawyer's account, has no intention of testifying for the government against Barry Bonds, then why did they send him to jail?
This is different from the Vick case in a few ways. They never leaked the evidence, didn't try to hide their cards at all and we didn't know about the indictment until it happened. We truly didn't know the magnitude of the Vick charges until the day he pleaded guilty. In this case, it has been evident to me that they've tried to find anyway possible to bring Bonds down. It almost seems like desperation. They've spent so much time and money that they have no choice but to go forward with what they have. Until I know more, I'll hold judgement. You'd hope that more people would do the same but it's Bonds. He is a polarizing figure and the government is getting exactly what they want. No matter whether he is proven innocent or is guilty as sin, he is discredited for the rest of his natural life. He is in fact, O.J. Simpson 2007. Oops, I forgot, O.J. is O.J. 2007. Barry is just his kid brother.

What will be a surprise is if a Frisco jury convicts him. But in the case of OJ now, since he has failed to track down Nicole's killer on the golf courses across the world, he will no longer receive the blind faith following from a jury like he had the last time and so far there is no hint that Mark Fuhrman planted any evidence.
Posted by: Tim Little | November 16, 2007 09:01 AM
Yes - I am suprised they have the guts to do it. The race card will be played and all the other bogus excuses. I would like to see the other guys who have done this nailed also. If they aren't Bonds will have the right to say he was singled out. But, that is what happens - the guy at the top is the big target.
It is time in sports we fans realize we have gone too far with this hero worship stuff. Everyone should be accountable for their actions. Just because you are a "star" shouldn't mean you don't have to follow the rules. WE have to judge the "star" as we would anyone. After all, we want to be judged fairly - as if we were a "star".
In sports - fair play - sportmanship - equal opportunity to compete should be the core. I am sick of today's athlete. They make a play and they jump and scream - everything is me-me-me ! Sports no longer markets teams and winning and champions and loyalty. They market indivivuals - who are here today and gone tomorrow. Today's sports page is full of who is charged with this and who is suspended for what. We should treat the individuals involved like anyone else. If they did it - they did it !!!!!!!

No I am not surprised. Anyone who does not think Bonds used steroids is a complete idiot or is afraid of sounding like a "sellout" if they do admit it. I already see that some on here are using the race card as a reason why Bonds is being indicted. That didn't take long, did it? I hope the other, more rational people on here read between the lines when someone says it is what "Amerikkka" wants. People who say it is what Amerikkka wants are really saying that Bonds should be able to commit perjury because he's black. That the rules and laws of the land should not apply to him because he's black. That's what the race card players are really saying, except they don't have the stones to say it. In fact, it's this type of sense of entitlement that got Bonds and Marion Jones indicted. Jason Giambi told the truth and admitted using steroids because he did not have that sense of entitlement, and he also knew that there would be no reverends leading protests on his behalf if he did get indicted. Whereas Bonds & Jones have grown up believing that the rules and the laws don't apply to them because of past injustices. Roman, I hope you are fair and run this post because if I have to read the whiny, offensive, kkk references from Ernest Frazier, then I think it's only fair that you give me the same courtesy, thanks.

I will say this....they shouldnt punish him any harder than they Did Martha Stewart....and if they throw his records out, they have to throw out BiGMacs/Sammys/Palmero/Clemens...anyone who gets caught. All the same, or nothing!
Posted by: Bculz | November 16, 2007 11:50 AM
This is amazing...you would think he was a mass murderer or some sort of crazed killer. This is breaking news on major T.V telecasts. WHY??? Bottom line this is a witch hunt to get back at Bonds because he broke Babe Ruths record. NOT HANK AARON because no matter what everyone says they still dont like or respect him. Everybody talks how much of an A**Hole Bonds is and how much they dislike him but I would bet most people dont know nothing about him just what a few pissed off reporters said on some talk radio stations. As you can see with this investigation no other big names were mentioned. Was Bonds the only one to use HGH and steroids? What about all the other big names like Roger Clemens or some like him. You will not get anymore big names because this is it they got who they wanted. If Bonds cheated then he should be punished but go after everyone else the same way not just people you dont like. WHAT A JOKE.
Posted by: MICHAEL WALKER | November 16, 2007 11:52 AM
Roman, you're own paper includes quotes saying that Anderson never cooperated with the Grand Jury before his release. It is more likely that the Fed simply believes they have enough circumstantial evidence to prove their case before a jury.
It's not the first time (OJ) the govt was nieve in thinking that & I don't think they will this time either. Bonds' is sure to hire Barry Schecht (the law-science guy from the OJ trial) & he's certainly capable of blowing holes through that evidence.
In the end the govt will have spent millions & Bonds will be acquitted so what's the point?

you're right...these are truly "victims" and they did NOTHING to bring this on themeselves.

Roman, thanks for printing my post. My previous post says what I think about the validity of race being a factor in this indictment so I won't waste space repeating it. I will, however, challenge the race card players to present to me a name of a white athlete in this Balco investigation who lied to the grand jury and was not indicted. Giambi testified in front of the same grand jury and told the truth and admitted he used roids, hence, no indictment. McGuire, who also obviously used roids, retired in 2001 and more importantly, never had a connection with Balco and Victor Conte. Obviously McGuire used a different source than Conte & Balco so he was no more a part of this investigation than you or I or anyone else on this board. You see, the feds started up and conducted this investigation, not MLB. So again, give me a name of a white athlete who lied under oath and was let off the hook without an indictment? I am waiting!

I hate Bonds just as much as the next person but does he really deserve to goto jail? Just take the guys name off the record books and ban him for life from baseball but jail? Whatever...
Posted by: Dan | November 16, 2007 01:42 PM
easy Jeff...simmer donna..
no jail time either...im totally all or nothing...on this issue....
I also heard that they waited until Anderson was out of jail, since he specifically DID keep his mouth shut, as a way to pimp him and he may even go back to jail.
Also...as to avoid a public mob, they waited until he wasnt a Giant anymore....
and now that he isnt a Giant, no team will touch him.
Also, i think he is a lightning rod for this stuff, cause he is just a big Pri** . Not to kick a dead dog, but i blame his dad for some of it.
MOVIE IDEA: Flash Forward 15 years...Barrys Son has taken his Mothers maiden name, and has been slugging away on some minor league team, when he gets called up to the BIG SHOW...and he gets his chance to redeem his fathers Name, but he has to change his back to Bonds....but...everyone tells him, that if he changes his name, it will bring back the steroidgate psycho drama times that he has paid many thousands of dollars to top therapists to try to block out of his past.......what does he do? Take back the Bonds Name? Take Steroids like dad? Go clean and break the record legit?
Wow....i smell an emmy! (since this will clearly be picked up by ESPN for a made for TV mini series)....why not...they picked up that Reggie Jackson crap!

Yes, I support Barry Bonds. And to those who wonder how? Barry is my friend.
Posted by: Barry Bonds' Supporter | November 16, 2007 04:46 PM
I just read Telander's pc & nearly puked. A career home-run leader is meaningless because you can't compare players of different era's any more than you can compare the era's themselves. To the best of any one's knowledge Ruth was powered by booze & hot dogs & these are considered handicaps to a MLB player. So what Ruth did in HIS era exceeds the accomplishments of Maris, Aaron, Bonds, & A-Rod. Likewise none of the other sluggers possessed the mental toughness Ruth did to be both a great pitcher & slugger in MLB.
IMO, Ruth stands alone at the top as the greatest MLB player to have ever lived & A-Rod will never touch that.
To support that I challenge Telander or any one else to compare Ruth's #'s vs the league avg's in HIS era & then do the same for A-Rod, Bonds, Aaron, & Maris in there era's. If you bother to do that you'll find Ruth has the widest gap.
Posted by: Juan | November 16, 2007 05:10 PM
surprised, of course not.
but Bonds got sucked into the "grand jury" trap just like Slick Willy did.
though in his case using roids was technically illegal and receiving fellatio from young interns is not. (so long as they're of age)
I'm sure he felt indignant that he had to answer this question, just like Willy felt (and Willy was 110% correct to feel this way)
but in a grand jury setting you have no choice, they can ask anything.
I'm not sure what the bru-haha is all about anyways.
I don't care if Bonds is the "all time HR leader" or not. I would agree with the other guy who notes that booze powered Babe Ruth will always remain the most prodigious home run hitter in baseball history.
Bonds was clearly a Hall of Fame player, before he ever touched roids.
That he did, because he saw no talents like Brady Anderson hit 50 HR's in the roid era overshadow him was his decision to make.
as are the consequences to asterisks, legacy, etc etc.
but he shouldn't serve a single day in jail.
Posted by: Bogey | November 16, 2007 06:22 PM
The fascination with the career HR record is MLB's fault. If they would only have the sense to rename the MVP award to the Babe Ruth award the focus would be on the career SLG leader record. We have a Cy Young award so we should have a Babe Ruth award too.
For those who doubt Ruth's accomplishments: read & weep.
# of times player led league in SLG, last yr they did:
13-Ruth 1931, 9-Ted Williams 1957, 9-Rogers Hornsby 1929, 8-Ty Cobb 1917, 7-Dan Brouthers 1891,
7-Barry Bonds 2004, 6-Stan Musial 1952, 5-Willie Mays 1965, 5-Ed Delahanty 1902, 5-Mike Schmidt 1986,
5-Honus Wagner 1909, 5-Jimmy Foxx 1939, 4-Hank Aaron 1971, 4-Frank Robinson 1966, 4-Mickey Mantle 1962,

Hon Mention: 3-time SLG leaders: A-Rod, Manny Ramirez, Reggie Jackson, Carl Yas, Dick Allen, Willie McCovey, Chuck Klein, Ross Barnes
MLB should honor the great's each month of the season. Every fan should know these names.

____________________________________________________
I'll admit that I watch sports, although not nearly as often as I used to. One or two games a week is the norm for me these days; the reason being that I just don't view the games or the players as being all that "important" anymore. (not that they ever really were to begin with)
Even if every athlete, both amateur and professional, was virtuous and pure as the driven snow, the entire concept of them being looked upon as heros and role models reflects rather poorly on what we admire, value, and respect as a society.
The popularity and income that someone like Jonas Salk, ar Albert Einstein would command today would pale in comparison to that of a relative Neanderthal like Brian Urlacher, who has contributed little more to society than an illegitimate child.
True role models like Marie Curie, George Washington Carver, George Patton, Louis Pasteur, Thomas Alva Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, or the Wright brothers would be lost in the glare of attention that is too frequently focused on people like Barry Bonds.
And all of them put together wouldn't make what A-Rod brings down in a year; though Bill Gates would give him a run for his money.
We used to have real heros, now we have Madden 2007. And although genuine movers and shakers like Gates or Steve Jobs do make a ton of money, nobody would stand in line to buy one of their jerseys.
Conversely, cretins like Barry Bonds, Brian Urlacher, Michael Vick and Pacman Jones have certainly sold more than their fair share.
They're heros.
It's a sad testimony indeed.
