« Can Rich Hill save this team? | Main | Best football team - on any level - in this state plays in Champaign »

Greetings from Wrigley

Welcome from Section 503, Row 1, Seat 10. I'll be updating throughout the game. It's not a bad seat, better than sitting in the press box. Somewhat obstructed view, but it's a beautiful day and I'm with the fans. Unfortunately, I won't be able to drink with them - yet.

There's a good buzz, but not what I was expecting. I guess an 0-2 deficit will do that to you.

Kerry Wood, unbelievably, got the biggest ovation during introductions. Geovany Soto was next, which made me wonder again why Jason Kendall isn't starting. It could be because Lou wants a veteran catching Rich Hill, who's maybe a little fragile.

Still, they may need Soto's bat.

UPDATE 1: That didn't take long. First pitch homer to Chris Young. The fan immediately threw it back. Then a double and before you know it 2-0. The good thing is Livan Hernandez isn't very good.
UPDATE 2: Just like they did throughout Game 2, the Cubs get runners on, but a double-play and Aramis Ramirez looking at strike three to end the inning took care of that. Ramirez has been just awful. The fans already are panicking. One screamed at Ramirez "swing the freaking bat," and an usher went over to tell him to watch his language. Another fan threw his hat down. It's only the second inning.
UPDATE 3: Rich Hill can't even bunt well, right back to Hernandez for a force at third. More runners left on. Not looking good for the home team.
UPDATE 4: Bottom of the third and I don't even know why fans get excited about the Cubs getting guys on base. Double-play, inning over. The buzz is gone.
UPDATE 5: Hill puts two on and gets the hook. It's interesting, I've been at a few games since Zambrano ripped the fans for booing him, and ever since, I think the fans have let up on pitchers getting pulled. Not much booing. Cubs don't turn the double-play and Lou comes out to argue. Fans yell "Bull----," but what does it matter if your team can't score? From this seat, I have a good view of the rooftops. Talk about buzzkill, it looks like wakes on top of those buildings.
UPDATE 6: Wow, bases loaded no outs and just one run. At least they scored, I guess. Fans were giving Quade a hard time for not sending the runner, but you don't make the first or third out at the plate. You need four runs, baserunners. Soriano pops up meekly. Bad series for the Cubs' big bats.
UPDATE 7: What a cruel, cruel trick. The foul goes to the Bartman seat and TBS shows Bartman immediately.
UPDATE 8: Well, here we are again. Runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the fifth. And Aramis is up. You think he's due? He walks. Up to De Rosa. I'm guessing base hit. Yikes. Unbelievable. Double play.

I think I should be watching Grizzly Rage instead... less violent and depressing.

Eric Byrnes was CLEARLY safe.

jc kendall just gave us a run--pretty great for a guy who's about 70

it ain't over till it's over ! -- yogi berra (& lou pinella)

rain rain rain!!!!!

in 2003 that would have mattered...

any chance of a freak rainstorm? please?

Roman responds: I don't know about that, but there's smoke coming from the bar-b-que from a rooftop.

This is depressing, sort of reminds me of Eddie Murphy's skit of baseball players and drugs with the white line going all the way to home plate :). Usually the cubs only loose if I watch the game maybe I should start watching it. :)

I feel the ghost of Ernie Banks... this is GONNA HAPPEN! (is Ernie Banks dead?)

Roman responds: No, but judging how he looked here before the game, he's put on a few pounds. Didn't look too good.

bases loaded some one must have paid off the ump

don't feel the ghost of banks but I smell the contents of fergie jenkins' carry-on...

Roman responds: This blog does not condone illegal stimulation.

tinkers, evers, and chance would have rolled over in their graves if they were alive right now...

the cubs still had a good season by making it into the playoffs

remind me again who was the team of smoke and mirrors?

where have u gone billy williams? a city turns its lonely eyes to you... woo woo woo...

TINKERS, EVERS, CHANCE--SPINNING SPINNING SPINNING! it takes skill to hit into that many dbl plays...

I think Eddie Gadel should be sent out to lead off the next inning. it's our only hope.

oh yes that's right Arizona is the team of smoke snd mirrors...the Cubs are choking on their smoke and Arizona is holding up the mirrors for the Cuns to look into and see who they really are

Wouldn't be so difficult to take if the Cubs were being beaten
by a team from a real baseball city. Phoenix!!!! For God's sake!!!! All the more humiliating.

I wonder if sammy sosa left any of his old bats lying around...?

I saw a cubs candy bar today at walgreens and I thought to my self better not eat it !!!
It will make you choke!!!BAH HA HA HA!!GET IT????THE Cubs always choke!!!

Hey Chicago Whadda say the Cubs are going to lose today!!!!!

the cubbies will never win as long as they are owned by the Trib.

Fingers, toes, anything else I can cross here in Bakersfield, Ca.

I hear conrad black now has some extra cash--maybe he'll buy them.

I guess we will find out who will buy the cubs next week now.

go snakes.

is anyone even watching this anymore? looks like even Roman M. has gone home. Is this a bad time to admit I'm actually a Red Sox fan?

Roman, did you hear those Rex fans booing at the end of the Cubs game? Bastards are everywhere!!!

Cubs bats let them down. They looked like the Whitesox (07 of course). I am sorry Chicago, I really thought the Cubs would bring it. Don't blame anyone or anything but those bats!!! Pitching wasn't even to blame. Watch someone find a way to blame Dusty.

BAH AH HA HA HAHA HA!!!!

Don't blame the goat.... blame the goats we have on our team.

Why do we pay them the big $$$ for them????? I hope the new owner cuts these idiots and starts from scratch. Pinella needs to go too. He's like uncle Louie that drinks too much and thinks he knows baseball when all he does is get lucky. Anyways best of luck to Arizona and hope they win it all.

Maybe we'll see something in the next 100 years

What an embarrassment. I don't know what the Diamondbacks were so happy about after they won because a little league team could have beaten the Cubs in this series. Hey guys, if you're going to "play" like that in the playoffs, then don't even bother winning the division next year.

Cubs with all the jack these players make goes to show something. You can pay guys lots of bucks but if they don't perform its just money wasted. The Dbacks did not have a huge payroll & guys with huge stats. Just guys that know how to play game right & actually perform when it counts!Cubs a roster full of over hype ,over paid & under achievers! Ramirez,Lee,Soriano,Derosa etc .etc. a bunch of doos doos these guys are! Hendry gotta go for starters! awful franchise cubs are! At least sox in 05 showed how to win!Choking cubs!

I wonder who's gonna pitch game 4, Lou?

Somewhere out there an old man has a tear running down his face. Somewhere out there a child is buring his face in his mom's shoulder. Somewhere out there several bar patrons are crying in their beers. Why you may ask? Because the mighty CUBS have once again struck out and broken our hearts... My only question is, "How much longer????" Think about it. 100 years is a long time for any one thing to wait for. Oh well, raise your glasses to next year...

1929, 1932, 1945, 1969, 1984, 2003, 2007

2011? 2015? 2020?????

That is a good one Sonny! I betch ya you can now get good seats at Wrigley for game 4! lol..Lou manage to lose & his players played like losers! Shame on cubs! Soriano,Ramirez,Lee,Lilly,Derosa etc. should all be arrested for ripping off cub fans c/o Trib. Imagine paying big bucks for that doo doo effort?

Can the Cubs and their two faced fans make it an even 100 years without a title next season?
"It's gonna happen!"

Nice to see the Cub fans booing their own players from the 5th inning on. This was just a .500 team that was lucky to even make the post season yet you were talking about a World Series before the first game was even played.
You losers think that you are entitled to a championship and can get it by simply crying for it like a child crying for a cookie.

chicago cubs are an embarrassment to chicago! disband the team and blow up that trash in wrigleyville!

well at least Zambrano's ready to go tomorrow.

Wait 'till next century!

and we can all fully devote our attention to football. yippie.

When are Dumb Cub fans going to stop giving Lou Pinella a free pass. He blew game one with with stupid decisions and all Cub fans could say its the players fault Lou made a good baseball decision. If Dusty had made the same decision Cub fans would have had a riot and called him every name in the book and demanded him fired at once. The good old boy Lou who talks like he's drunk half the time gets a free pass, its all the players fault and the manager can do only so much but for 300 million dollars the Cubs should expect a little more. Dusty had a bad triple A team and Cub fans blamed everyting on him but I should understand this these are the same fans that call Jacque Jones, Latroy Hawkins, Dusty Baker and Corey Patterson racist names while at the game. The Cubs are what I thought they were...an OVER RATED, OVER HYPED BUNCH OF LOSERS. And you thought Dusty couldnt manage??? WOW!!!!

Ramirez was 0-for-the-series? Nice job. Only slightly worse than Soriano, and no RBI between the 2? Pathetic. Don't have rallies before you win anything!!!!!!! I can't wait to hear the excuses.

I am 70 years old and cannot remember a single Cubs World Series game.

I am headed south, at least the Cardinals have made 2 Series in the last 3 years.

Hey the cubs tied the white sox in the amount of playoff wins this year!! HA HA HA BAH HA HA!!!

Zambrano should be well rested for opening day next april and maybe during the off season A-Ram will learn where the strike zone is.....hint...it's not 2 feet outside and shoe top high. It would have been better had they choked in the last week of the regular season then put the fans through the humiliation of an NLDS sweep failing to score runners in scoring position more than 20 times in 3 games. Kudos to the D-Backs who put on a clinic on how to play team ball.
Lou may have done a good job putting things together during the season but showed little leadership or managerial skills when it really counted.

God the Cubs suck so bad.

The level of talent they have is so overwhelming that I don't even know how they can improve on it next season. Which is lame because they're obviously not good enough to do it this year either so they obviously need to do something different. How do you remedy something like this?

Well, at least when they make the post season next year with A-Rod and Mariano Rivera, they'll have one new guy that will show up.

I'm so glad Cubs fans booed the depression inducing losers. You are NOT lovable CUBS - you are a disgrace!!!

99 years and counting.

Just wait till Dunston comes around next year!!!

Can't blame the Cubs organization for this year. They spent over $300,000.00 to rebuild, and you can't blame Piniella. The fault lies in those over priced athelets that chocked. Baseball, football and basketball players should be paid on the winning of games. In direct proportion to those in golf, boxing, tennis etc.

Come on Cub fans cut yourself some slack. You believed, and they lost. Maybe Lou was caught looking ahead, but it's not all his fault. Your big name hitters simply didn't hit. Soriano, Ramirez and Lee were MIA. Trivia question, what happens in a Bulls game if Hinrich, Gordon and Deng go 6-38? The Bulls lose. It's not a secret that stars get paid to "NOT" go 6-38 in a three game serious. Bad things happen when they do.

Sure Lily didn't pitch great, but the Cubs fell victim to what the White Sox pitchers fell victim to all year and what the Bears Defense has fallen victim to countless times(no room for error). I mean seriously.....Ramirez didn't have a hit all series.....the team was 2-23 with risp.....hell....it's the offense's fault. Plain and simple. Then to throw Hill out there and say "ok kid, save us".....shouldn't they have gone with a Vet like Tracshel? Isn't that what they picked him up for? If there is something I fault Lou for it's that, they should have thrown Tracshel or Marquis(the guy they paid the money to) out there and said win it.

I never thought I would say this as a White Sox fan, but I feel like the players got nervous, and I feel bad for them. They have alot of pressure on them from the fans to win, and it must be tough with the expectations. Yeah I know they get paid but still, that's alot of pressure and they should be applauded for coming to the Cubs knowing what's at stake. While I would never want to see them beat us in a World Series, I hope if they make it back next year they at least perform better for you guys.

Oh man, I just looked up the salary for Hill and Marquis.....Marquis gets 4 mill this year, Hill gets 400 thou.....come on Lou....make your big money player go out there and get you a victory, not a kid making league minimum to go and save you. Yeah Lou is going to have to bite the bullet on that one.

I am having trouble typing this because I am laughing so hard about the Cubs losing, but then isn't that the usual outcome of this team? I don't understand being a Cub fan at all, the losing, the losing, the choking, the losing, how can one stand it? Oh, I forgot, you have Wrigley Field, recently called the urinal of baseball. I am a Cardinal fan and while the Cards celebrated their 10th World Series just a year ago, the Cubs will celebrate 100 years of futility in 2008. To celebrate this miserable distinction, maybe "next year" instead of bobble-heads, they can give out little statues of the Cubs players with their heads up their butts. While the Cub fans are crying in their beer today, the rest of us our laughing our butts off, AGAIN. Thank you Cubs, you have made my day, month, year...ha..ha..ha.

So Roman, did you start drinking in the 6th? Your updates kinda fell off there. But as long as we're changing the subject, could you please start the Bears thread now? I'm leaving for northern Wisconsin in 2 hours.

P.S. You promised someone you'd start an Ilini thread too, right? Get on the ball, man!

Advice for next year: Fine players who hit into double plays by swinging at ball four.Get a new hitting coach who can teach pitchers to bunt and hitters to go with pitches, the way the Diamondbacks did all series. The Cub batters were pathetic, striking out or grounding into double plays on bad pitches and letting strikes down the middle of the plate go by for called thirds. They looked like they had more bugs in their eyes than the Yankees and Indians at Cleveland. Pitching was bad too, but good hitting would easily have compensated.

So what is wrong with the BUNT.
