« Greetings from Wrigley | Main | Is this a bye week for the Bears? »

Best football team - on any level - in this state plays in Champaign

What a nice team Ron Zook has put together, and so many talented true freshmen. People still say he doesn't know how to coach, but with that much talent, he's going to win a lot games.

Suddenly Illinois is a football school. It's been a while, but with the Orange Krush filling the stadium, it looked like the old days.

I'm not saying beating a highly overrated Wisconsin team is cause for massive celebration, but this team is fun to watch. From Rashard Mendenhall to Regis Benn to Martez Wilson, there is some big-time talent in Champaign.

The schedule is favorable, too, except for the game at Ohio State. But Michigan is at home, and that will be a very winnable game.

At least there's reason to be excited about one football team in this state.

Ohio State looks Tough!!

I almost watched part of their game yesterday....Isn't that RB a top recruit at the position... and chose Illinois over higher profile programs?...and yes, I know I can look it up quickly....I'm participating, K?!....in an Illini thread....

Performin the ethnic-cleanse on Illiniwek was retarded, IMO...I loved that guy....You don't see Irish people whackin out the Leprechaun doyanow...

Ron Zook...recruits so well....doesn't have to coach

Good Luck this year to the Pumpkin Heads

actually, I am most impressed by the uniforms. They were sooooo ugly when I played there. Soooooo ugly for so long. First time I got to see them on tv in a while. They look like they 'are somebody'. The Dude at Lids told me he ordered some 'illini' Lids last week...can't wait..my dog chewed the rim of mine and it scratches my forehead. So if you see a dude with scaratches on his forehead at Lambeau-that's me.Time to leave for the game. Say Mr. Modrowski, nothing on the marathon??? GOOOOOOO BEARRRRRRRRS!

After watching three solid weeks of college football, the Illini are a pleasant surprise to the state of Illinois. S.I.U. is gonna ring some bells, but in division 1A, the Illini have surprised even myself, a devout follower. Northern, Northwestern, and Notre Dame are in the "N" category by themselves; NOTHING.

I only have the stats to go by in the Missouri game, but it seems a slow start and some special teams play may have cost the Illini a perfect start, and the Tigers were no pushover seeing as they put a thrashing on a highly regarded Cornhuskers squad.

Unfortunately our offense is merely a Three-Headed monster; Williams, Benn, and Mendenhall. As a freshman, I thought Rashard was their best back and he's showing every bit of that to be true. The guys a BULL with speed. Juice still has a ways to go with the passing game and Benn just needs the ball in an open pasture at any moment, but after a few McGee cameos there really is nobody else. I honestly feel if they stop the running game, we may have a major problem. Thing is though, Wisconsin couldn't stop the run even when they KNEW it was coming.

The 'D' is solid, and like the 'O', getting better every game. Iowa game should be a mirror of Penn State so I like the chances. And Bculz is absolutely right, Ohio State is solid.

With a few breaks we may lose only two(2) games this year, but four losses wouldn't surprise me either, not in todays' game.

L.S.U. (with the right coach they'd be even more the monster), Florida (tough loss), Ohio State (solid both sides, but not spectacular), and Oklahoma (young Q.B. has best touch in C.F.A.) look real good, but anybody after that can be beat 5 thru 75 on any given day. Gotta love it!

Like any other college football junkie, it gets tiresome to see the same names year after year, so the South Floridas', Hawaiis', Missouris', Illinois', and yes, even Kansas are fun to see leading their perspective powerhouse conferences.

Funny how the weather changes in November though.

They are indeed a pleasant surprise, and considering how many true freshmen are on the squad they should get nothing but better in the next few years.

I love the big 10. Not an avid stats person, but I like to watch and see them do well. It IS good to see some new blood! And they are very exciting to watch. Bears are still the best team in Illinois people! Go Illini!!!!

I'm pleased with the performance of the team, but am growing more and more disgusted with the fans each week.

Zook has done what he is suppose to do -- keep in-state talent playing in state. There is no reason this team shouldn't be competitive given the number of programs in the Chicagoland area. The fact that he has convince so many to come to CU, while also getting talent elsewhere is a credit to his abilities as a GM/coach.

And lets be serious. It doesn't matter if he can coach. If you have solid talent and a basic plan, you win. All the coaching talent in the world has not helped Weis, and we see what has happened with PSU and Florida State when they have bad recruits.

That said, I'm finding it difficult to go to support the team given the continued support fans and alumni are giving to "The Chief."

Instead of letting the issue go, stores and bars down here have placed "paint the stadium Chief" signs in windows throughout Campustown, and students have obliged, wearing the stuff with pride. You also see little kids wearing Chief gear on Saturday, and the classic band routines are encouraging attendees to games to chant "Cheif" at halftime.

It's disgusting. Instead of acknowledging that the Cheif was an offensive, degrading symbol, people refuse to let it go. Meanwhile, racial tensions at this University are worse than ever. The University has just launched a program designed to alliviate tensions here, and that has recieved bad press from people of all political perspectives.

I would hope the Sun-Times would come down here and look at this issue as this team continues to win, because it is about to reach a boiling point.

And the last thing I want to see happen is GameDay show up on campus only to see a bunch of drunk frat boys yelling chief.

Great game out of the Illini.

How about Mizzou at 5-0. Tigers clocked in at 11 this week. I know I have a tiger towel around here somewhere.

Go ND! way to put a beating on UCLA

And a special thanks to ole Jim Harbaugh and The Cardinal for putting the University of Spoiled Children in there place. Loved it!

Sweeney, no one's ever thanked Jim Harbaugh for anything before. You're nice.

Roman responds: He is nice. He's the only poster I've had beers with.

yeah..but how many have you sparked a J with?? DOnt answer that!

USC fans don't think you're nice but I sure do. :) I think most of Chicago was shocked to find Harbaugh at the helm of Stanford.

Roman I think both the Illini and ND capitalized on good luck last week. ND is out of the BCS & I don't see IL in it either. Eventually luck runs out & skill & talent have to carry you.

ND's season for alum now comes down to USC. Can Weis improve this team enough to beat USC at the end of the year? If he does that he'll be back to heroic status.
