Are Bears being petty with Griese?

Brian Griese was not supposed to be in the Halas Hall media room Monday, but there he was facing reporters and saying he wasn't the one making all the calls in the winning drive Sunday. Was that necessary?

Was Ron Turner upset with the buzz he had next to nothing to do with the drive? Did the Bears encourage Griese to make the impromptu appearance.

It makes you wonder. And if it had anything to do with Turner not getting enough credit, it's very petty.

Just take the win

Comments

Turnergate?

Roman responds: Exactly.

The McCasky's are like a real life Ewing Family from Dallas.

The real question is......was there truely a malfunction in Greise's headset or did he simply not like the plays called and engineer the drive to prove a point then catch hell from upstairs for upstaging Turner? Which is the real cover-up?

I noticed Propaganda Central (chicagobears.com) even has a new article up this evening: "Griese Clarifies Role in Engineering TD Drive." Early this morning over the phone:

B. Griese: Hello?

R. Turner: Hey, get your butt down here and start preparing to retract what you said yesterday about calling the plays on that fantastic winning drive. If you don't, people are going to conclude I'm useless at best!!

B. Griese: Do you know it's 5:30 in the morning, dork?! As for your value, I'd be ecstatic if you were up to the level of useless.

R. Turner: Get down here now, or all our next opponent defenses will get mysterious packages of valuable offensive play material before the games. It'll make what Bill Belicheat got look like chicken feed.

B. Griese: I'm there.

Petty, without a doubt. Hopefully, Lovie and Jerry realize what kind of dope they have calling the game.

Dave Parks, Did you see the OTHER article on chicagobears.com?

It was written Sunday nite by Larry Meyer.
Bears stun Eagles with late 97-yard touchdown drive

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the drive was that Griese called all of the plays up until the touchdown because his helmet communication with offensive coordinator Ron Turner had gone out before the Bears took possession of the ball.

“I felt really good calling my own plays in that situation,” Griese said. “Before I go out into a two-minute drill, I look at our play sheet and get in my mind a plan of what we want to do, so I felt comfortable in that situation.”

With the clock stopped, Griese went to the sideline to get the final play call from Turner.

“He just has tremendous poise,” Turner said. “I couldn’t ask for somebody to execute an offense any better.”

Geez, didn't Meyer ask Turner about Griese calling the plays? he must have asked Turner 'something' in order to get the answer he got.

How did he get all those calls from Pep that the new story enumerates?? Yahoo says Griese read Pep's lips. ESPN says it was accomplished thru hand signals.

I believed Griese the first time, right up to where he said he "ran quickly to the sidelines to get the play for the TD." So who was going to spike the ball for him if he didn't get back in time?

I think Griese was still wound up from the game and was just happy that he had finally gotten to call some plays for the 1st time in 4 weeks and it jsut slipped out, but it suddenly dawned on him that Pep and Turner were going to be upset, so he threw them the TD bone.

Trouble is, that Drive was so unlike Turner or Pep, that people went nuts over it, and they had a rather rude awakening this morning.

Seems like it would have been better for the team, to have just let it blow over, but then these particular Chicago Bears coaches don't seem to be all that concerned with what is better for the team.

Hilarious Dave!

I get sooo sick of the McCaskey family....as soon as the fun begin they all of sudden want to control the fun....never give a inch those people! Ron Turner.......if he make two good calls in a row he would be dangerous.
They get all disturb over who gets the credit....Hell he probably
was under the table confused as to why we didn`t take a knee and run out the clock.

Maybe if he could jumpstart the offense before the half we wouldn`t need to rush.....He spend 2 quarters to see what won`t work instead of manufacturing points of any kind from the jump...
I see the other teams start at the same game time have 3-7pts.
already......always a struggle with that Guy!!!

Somebody woke him up told him Griese and the Boys won.

I hope the head set stays broke...at least we get action....start
the heart to pumping again.
Well Go Bears-Anyway!!!!!!!!

Just goes to prove that everything that's been said about management IS TRUE. Nuf said.

It was petty, but to his credit, Ron Turner has made the transition with the Bears offense. We asked for a new QB and we got one. We asked for more TE and we got it. We demanded more Hester and we got it. We asked to stretch the field and we got that also. Ron has been under intense heat - thanks to his conservative playcalling and that terrible QB. We live in a media driven sports world. Ron has taken his lumps and it is only fair that he gets some credit. I don't know if I would've gone out of my way to make Griese join the press conference. That was too much and it has started yet more negative press. Ron Turner is human, so give him a break. But I do agree Roman, it was petty.

I agree with Rick.

Fire Ron Turner Now.

With his NFL experience, Turner can always find a job at the college level. Afterall, look at how well Charlie Weis is doing at ND.

Hey I was checking out the blogs on NFLUK.....those blokes are alot nicer than us. Cracking things about Brian the say. Mad, Just mad. The Game on sunday will be smashing. I don't think that the cable council will have the Bears on the tele up here. That's petty.

I'm sure it had lots to do with panties and ruffles..... Brian handled it well

Comments like those today never cease to amaze me. The sheer arrogant confidence with which they are expressed indicates manifest self-delusion. Is it possible that what Griese said is the simple truth? He said he wanted to set the record straight, that he had been misunderstood, and that he called only four of the ten plays that led to the touchdown. At least you, Roman, qualified with an "if."

Roman responds: It is possible. In fact, I was starting to lean that way more today.

Egos should be put away until the team has a winning record its embarrassing. Someone should explain the phrase keep a low profile to Turner.

OT- Can anyone beat Anderson Silva?

Roman responds: I didn't see it, but Rich Franklin hasn't been very impressive lately.

This is Lovie's coaching staff. If he wants Turner to be given that respect then Griese will have to pay him respect. I'm sure Griese doesn't want us blaming those two losses all on him; he should return that courtesy.

I was wrong about Hester. It's not that he's a bad wide receiver, it's just that the quarterbacks havn't figured out how to throw to a guy with his speed.

That is petty if that's what happened. What the Bears said is Griese would have been calling plays at the line anyway, with no timeouts left. Griese is a "me first" kind of guy and that rubs me the wrong way. After the Minnesota game he looked like he could care less the Bears lost, and was smug and content that he threw 2 late TD's . I guess I could care less about his attitude if he could help the Bears to the playoffs. But there are pass plays being called during the games he played that he's not hitting on, or he's checking down on, that would result in more points being scored earlier in the game. I think he should improve on his 2-2 record before the Bears promote him to offensive coordinator.

Offensive and Defensive co-ordinators Wins Games...*sheesh*, NOT THE PLAYERS! Yeah, right!...try selling that one to the team

It is PETTY because a coaching staff NOW REALIZES, "DAMN, we had this guy sitting on the bench all the time, WE COULDA WON THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL!"

McCaskey's + Bears' Coaching Staff = Bunch of Wussies

(oh no Auntie Em (Virginia McCaskey), Brian don't deserve credit. WE ALL HAD A HAND IN WINNING!...Stop laughing people.

Starring Scarecrow as (the nit-wit Ron Turner), the Cowardly Lion (Lovie Smith - you deserve just for Grossman alone), the Tin Man (Babich for screwing up the defense)

And the rest of the McCaskey family are the Little Munckins off to feast on the Chicago Bears revenues.

Even the wizard is scratching his head on this one!

Uh Rick... Lovie and Angelo are the problem, not the solution...

It seems like Turner is becoming a bigger joke after Griese came out and clarified what happened on Sunday. Not only is he dumb and clueless but now he's petty as well. What can you expect from someone who did nothing with the program down in Urbana. Ron Turners probably mad at Griese because he's from a WINNING FOOTBALL PROGRAM (U of M) the same program which constantly embarrassed Ron Turner when he was the head coach for the fighting(laugh) Illini.

Maybe it has more to do with Griese getting too much credit for orchestrating the drive. This whole thing is completely petty - I'm not sure why it's even a story. They can't just take the win, just like the fans and the media can never just take the win. Wins are never good enough in this city. Every win ends up turning into some kind of quarterback controversy.

I think LOvie had the right idea on Sunday when the cameras prepeatedly showed him on the sidelines during crucial situations shutting up and showing no emotion....basically saying that "just let the players play with little input from coaching staff...because our horrible play calling is 75% of why we were (then) 2-4"......lets have a little confidence in our players for a change instead of Rex-wrecking them .....

We should be letting Griese call the plays for next game. That would pep up the offense a lot.

Bears Fan:

"It is PETTY because a coaching staff NOW REALIZES, "DAMN, we had this guy sitting on the bench all the time, WE COULDA WON THE FREAKING SUPER BOWL!""

The Bears are going to win the Superbowl with ONE touchdown drive?
Grossman did better than that on a good day. In fact, Griese played a significant part of the Superbowl last year.

"(oh no Auntie Em (Virginia McCaskey), Brian don't deserve credit. WE ALL HAD A HAND IN WINNING!...Stop laughing people."

Really? 12 tackles by Urlacher, three field goals by Robbie Gould, catches by Clark and Olsen, significant yards by Benson, catches by Hester, great field position on special teams and a touchdown by Muhamed- is that not a team effort?

JohnF:

"Uh Rick... Lovie and Angelo are the problem, not the solution..."

I guess it's easy for some fans to erase the first Superbowl appearance in 21 years by saying it was an "easy" season (the first easy season in NFL history), but it will take a whole lot more imagination to erase the two successful seasons prior to that.

BRING BACK SHHHHHHHHHHHHOOP!!!!

Superbowl loss was due to Lovie/Angelo insisting on playing Grossman when it was obvious after last year's Miami game that he should have been pulled.

Griese's play in the last four games proves this point.

Lovie + Angelo = Superbowl Loss

Bears Fan, don't you know that the Wizard of Oz is scary as hell? I did just go to Dunkin' Donuts though, thanks for the suggestion. I love Munchkins!

A bigger man would have enjoyed the victory instead of fretting about wether or not he was getting sufficient credit for engineering the winning drive.

But in retrospect I'm sure Griese would have been better served by downplaying his virtuoso performance immediately after the game. He could have just played dumb, and not alluded to the helmet's audio malfunction.

By letting everyone know that he called his own plays on that final drive, he was also sending a subliminal message about Turner's ineptitude as an offensive coordinator.

The guy who wrote the Wizard of OZ grew up on the S.Side of Chicago and when I first saw the Emerald city, it use to remind me of Driving into the City too...I think we should make a Push to re-coin Chicago the Emerald City!!!

Rebecka, I saw most of that article and assumed its story would stand. You make some good points. I think Griese clearly told it as it was and would have said he called some of the plays if that's what really happened. Oh well, down the Memory (Turner?) Hole!

Don't let the Red Sox guy Win!!! Vote for our own CUBS FAN at www.people.com or http://sexyfan.people.com Christoper Noonon is one of our own!! YOu can vote 5x's at each site.
It's bad enough we are not at the World Series so at least put one of our guys there.

with all the media attention rex dealt with....pooor bambi....maybe the rex entusiasts should get a hold of PETA and hate on Mike Vick ....you have nothing better to do ....you, you, you.....enthusiasts

Griese is who I thought he was, but I'll admit, he's brought along a bag of chips too......ummm, with him...."kudos"...not chips

Brian Greise did make me think about Joe Montana...ie. not having a strong arm....that was pretty cool....timing and touch...Could Bob Greise's Son lead us to a Superbowl??.... where we beat an undefeated Patriots team?....and Win?.....Ap not Ced...for the record...at rb

Is that double champagne and cigars?...I am so there....hook me up, Captain Press Pass.....ie..Roman

all the fixers in the NFL front office might wanna chew on that one...."calling all refs!!!" Bears/Pats

Csonka.. Kutchenburg (Hobart)..Brian's Dad...Steve Buscemi...Mike Madsen....Keitel....Tierney..my Resevior Superbowl Dream Rules..

Culzie...3 hail marys and genuflect till ya hoark for that "shoop thing"...you will go to hell for little crap like that, so ya know....jok4u..where do ya get a Terry Shea Doll?....In hell, BC..

Quick, jump on my poll...and vote

"Who would you rather have at starting RB .......???????"

Adrian Peterson
Cedric Benson

Yes, Id know we'd use both....but who gets the 25?

Reading those Monday morning quotes, I got the impression that Griese was saying "look at what I did.' Were they petty to make him come in and clarify? Absolutely. Everyone has to do it again on Sunday and prove that it was no fluke. I think they have to agree to give Griese an opportunity to call audibles because he is a veteran and why not use that to an advantage. Turner has to make sure that that conservative approach is abandoned every now and again. No way on earth will he get a head coach position unless he has an offense that scores points. He probably wanted people to know that he is still worthy and needed.

will Greise be able to slay the wicked witch and deliver her broom to the wizard? is the man of constant sorrow now bonafide? can Dudley Do-Right save Nell from the on-coming train? will Polly Pure-Bred get the by-line: Underdog Wins Sper Bowl! ? or will Riff Raff (Turner, Lovie, and the McCaskey's) prevail? tune in next week-end for the answer to these and many other questions. and now back to our regularly scheduled progrm......

Bears Fan, don't you know that the Wizard of Oz is scary as hell? I did just go to Dunkin' Donuts though, thanks for the suggestion. I love Munchkins!

Smiling @ Julie B.; thanks for understanding the sarcasm. I think that other guy took it WAY TOO SERIOUS! But then again, maybe Brian Griese, wouldn't have fumble the hand-offs several times doing the BIG GAME nor THROWN INTERCEPTIONS Mr. Keylan.

JUST MAYBE IT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPEN! NOW DO YOU GET IT? Come on, lets take baby steps!

OOPS! that is a team effort to take baby steps, SORRY, I didn't know that!

Can I dream like a Cubs Fan!? Dude, go drink another caffe latte and have a munckin or two....sheesh

I think Seattle is the Emerald City

Petty? H yes it is petty. Ron Turner has proven his worth.
Z E R O. Any time the Bears have a 3rd and 12, Turner calls for a 8 yard play, a few yards short of what is required to move the chains. This is not surprising however. The Bears seem to think they can win game by talking about it Monday through Saturday.
Sad but true.

culzie, L. Frank Baum the author of "The Wizard of Oz" did not grow up on Chicago's south side. He was born inChittenango, New York where he lived until he moved to South Dakota at the age of 32. Three years later he moved to chicago. He had a place near Bass Lake in Knox , Indiana where he wrote most of "the Wizard" and in fact he took the name of Dorothy's dog from the the town of Toto just west of Knox. There is a bridge that crosses the Kankakee River not far from Knox that was named for him "Baum's Bridge". There is a Museum dedicated to "The Wizard" in Valparaiso, Indiana at the intersection of U.S. 49 and the Indiana Toll Road.

Roman responds: That's great stuff, Tim. Thanks.
Have you ever played Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" while watching the Wizard? I did, but it didn't work so well.

I think eating munchkins is illegal in most states

Did you start it the second time the Lion roars?

Roman responds: See, that was my mistake. I think I started it too soon. Figured you would know the story.

At 3-4, and our next opponent 1 1/2 games up on us, I just hope this egomania takes a back seat to winning. Green Bay has a very good chance of faultering and now is the time for Lovie to shine and show what a true professional coach does best, WIN, even if it means sidestepping allegiance to some coaches and HIGHER.

Well, what about it Mr. Smith? Isn't it about time to look Jerry in the face and say "Hey, we still have a dang good chance to wrangle this title in. Y'all just have to trust me."

We couch quarterbacking, blog writing, spending too much time on the keyboarding folks cannot wanna win more than you Lovie?

Well, what about it Mr. Smith? Or is it Smithe, with an 'E'(go).

You're welcome Roman and no I never tried that but back in the day I have played Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" while eating "brownies", that was awesome! lol

Bears Fan

"I think that other guy took it WAY TOO SERIOUS! But then again, maybe Brian Griese, wouldn't have fumble the hand-offs several times doing the BIG GAME nor THROWN INTERCEPTIONS Mr. Keylan. "

He wouldn't have thrown touchdowns against the Saints either, meaning we never would've gotten to the Colts.

Keith - Are you being sarcastic in your Ron Turner post? I hope so, but I doubt it. That's the most ridiculous argument I've heard in a while. Call me crazy, but I think the offensive coordinator should know how to best utilize his players to put points on the board. I don't think we should give him credit for taking his cues from the from the fans/media. If that's the case, the Bears should make me offensive coordinator. I'll do it for half of what Turner makes and probably come up with the same results.

Hey Roman, Brian Griese won PLAYER OF THE WEEK!

Does this mean he has to have a press conference to share the accolades with Ron Turner?

People, this means NOT you KEYLAN, you haven't come down after the Pink Floyd, Rare Earth, Alice Cooper, Led Zep and Jimmy Hendrick's mind altering chemical trip, while listening to your ALBUMS. Please no more from you dude...NO more man!

But people seriously, what is wrong with our QB having some "I'm am a star" issues - and letting it be known - "HE CALLED THE PLAYS?"

If he called the plays so be it, it does not mean he SINGLE-HANDEDLY WON the game. (Don't do it Key-hole, don't jump in)

Why can't the last two games be a confidence builder for Griese, the O-Line, the Receivers, and MOST DEFINITELY the D-LINE, to know we can take the ball down field and score in the waning moments!

Please Key-less, just go get a caffe latte, okay dude?

Roman responds: Lol, yes, RT is offensive coordinator of the week. The news conference is at 3 at Halas.

Hey Roman, it didn't work because you watched the wrong movie. "Dark Side of the Moon" goes with Fantasia, I believe. At least it worked for me after eating "mushroom" pizza while visiting a friend at U of I in the early '90s.

Roman responds: No, no. Google it, the theory is if you put on Dark Side at the very beginning of the Wizard, it becomes like a weird stoner soundtrack for it. At least that's what I've heard.

I was half right.

Tim, what were his turn ons and turn offs?

Bears Fan: It's the system that wins, man. Not the players.

Here's one anticipated exchange between the Offensive Coordinator of the Week and the Offensive Player of the Week:

Turner: "I'll get you, you silwy wabbit. Nobody makes a fool out of me."

Griese: "There aint no place like a hole in the ground, hole in the ground, hole in the ground. There aint no place like a hole in the ground with a big fat goon up floating around."

Then Griese will take a hammer to his helmet communication device so it again doesn't work.

Bears win. 31-17.

Turnergate II begins on Monday, Oct. 29
