Rex Grossman's contract with the Bears is up after this season, and I don't think it's a leap to say it's becoming harder and harder to imagine him as the Bears starting quarterback next season.
If it were up to the fans, Grossman wouldn't be the Bears' QB the rest of this season.
And I'm starting to think Lovie Smith may be leaning hard toward going with Brian Griese or Kyle Orton.
So where does that leave Rex? Done in Chicago?
The Bears are who we thought they were...Tony Romo is the "real deal"
A special shout out to all those drunk and obnoxious fans that sat around us at the stadium and harrassed us unmercifuly during the first half...look who has the last laugh now! The only thing better than the Cowboys spanking the Bears and their terrible defense on national television was the look on those drunk fans faces as they slowly marched out of the stadium before the game was over. You reap what you sow...
P.S. Alex Brown...what was that you said about Tony Romo?
I have been as patient as I can be. They lost the Super Bowl because they lack a solid foundation in Grossman, they will also not make the playoffs this year with him. He has had an unbelievable amount of support and help to try to make him become "the future" but he is clearly "the mistake". Cut our losses and put him on the sideline, maybe he can hold onto the clipboard better than the football. If not Benson can help him.
Do I have to admit to others that I'm a Bears fan? :(
........YES!!!!!
I think he has punched his ticket out of town. As a life long die hard Bears fan out in Japan, it pains me to read and see how horrible they're doing this season. I gave up on Grossman after he broke my heart in the Super Bowl, and by the way he's playing this season, it's obvious that he's not going to get better. Coach Smith needs to do the right thing by benching Grossman for the rest of the year, and let Brian Griese save the season as the new starting QB. Grossman needs to leave. His time as the Bears starting QB has run out.
Lovie is proving to be NOTHING but a puppet. Enough said.
Rex has done nothing to justify his starting position in the NFL. The more I see of Lovie Smith, the less I am impressed with his coaching or personel skills. Grossman: 33 turnover in 17 games. That is unheard of, yet they keep trotting Grossman out there.
Benson, 3 fumbles in 200 plus carries yet he is on the bench. What am I missing here?
Rex is headed to the University of South Carolina. He'll be reunited with you know who. Word is that the Gamecocks need a new ball boy.
The problem is, Griese might be a nice change of pace, but he's not the answer. Let's face it, he was so inept in Denver they replaced him with Jake Plummer. But once the change is made, you can't go back. What if Lovie decides to listen to the increasingly irritable fans and put Griese in, and he stinks too? Then what? Go back to Rex, who's psyche is damaged probably beyond repair, or put in the #3 QB? None of it is a thrilling scenario. Look, its a team sport - the defense gave up 34 pts. - we can't score that much, Berrian and Hester couldn't hold on to the ball, Ced is an average back at best, and a host of other issues. However, Rex never has us in a position to win the game. Three picks? What is he working on in practice? He says in every press conference that he has to work on not turning the ball over so much. Sounds good, and while you're at it, get a good eyebrow wax so you don't look as scary off the field as you do on. Shaping up to be a long season, huh guys? We better not still have the same record as the Giants when they come to town Dec. 2.
Roman responds: Ahhh, I was waiting to hear from young Miss Julie. Hey, did they hear the booing in Section 101 last night? Or did you guys think they were yelling "Mooooooose"? And did they hear the chants for Griese, or were they yelling "Mooooooose" (couldn't think of a word that rhymes with Griese).
Some things stand out from the EMBARASSING Bears loss to the Cowboys:
1. Ron Turner has been found out. He and Norv are the biggest frauds in the NFL.
2. Grossman should start playing end, guard, and tackle. He should sit at the end of the bench, guard the water cooler, and tackle anyone that wants to take it.
3. Rusty Jones should go back to refurbishing cars as his players are out of shape and getting hurt.
4. Olin Kreutz has been exposed. A 'hot head' that has intimidated the media, fans, and his coaches long enough. If he makes the Pro-Bowl this year, it means he's part of the Hawaiian Family Secrets Family.
5. When will Tim Spencer teach Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson to hold the ball like Tiki Barber and Garrett Woulfe?
6. If Lovie says, 'Rex is our quarterback' this week, then, I'm positive he's Jerry Angelo's puppet.
7. Mushin Muhammad is slower off the line then my grandmother. And, she's been dead for 11 years.
8. If the Bears stick with Rex 'Makes Me' Grossman, what does that say about what they think about the talents of Brian Griese and Kyle Orton?
9. Anytime Bob Babich wants to go to the booth and see what's happening on the field is fine with me.
10. Fred Miller reminds me more of Fred Sanford than Jonathan Ogden or Anthony Munoz.
I really wanted to believe that Rex could be the answer to my beloved Bears perpetual search at quarterback. Considering he was/is in his contract year I figured he'd have all the incentive neccessary to put in the obviously still required work of being able to read nfl defenses. I feel bad for Rex, but I feel even worse about the Bears contender? status with Rex behind center. Coach Smith's loyalty is admirable but it fast becoming foolhardy as my championship hopes and dreams have been reduced to anticipating Rex's next telegraphed pass, botched snap or off target throw. I'll admit that while Berrian's drop, Benson's fumble/s or next defensive starter heading to sidelines have certainly contributed to the current sad record, its ultimately up to Rex to be able to overcome these instances as any Nfl quality/capable starter can. Good luck finding a suitor for your services next year Rex.
That window of opportunity is slamming shut on Bears fans and Lovie is busy wasting it with Rex at the helm. No more "But ... it's his first year starting" excuses this time either. Don't they teach you to throw the ball away or take a sack in Pop Warner? Yet he continues to force throws into coverage. You should NEVER have to pray as a fan that your QB plays great just so he doesn't play horrible. Rex is like a Kordell Stewart who can't run.
Whatever happened to benching someone who doesn't play well to tell him he's accountable for his performance? If Rex is the best QB on the team, what does it say about the other QBs on it? Why are they even signed? Let alone making the money they are? I can play worse than Rex for a fraction of what Griese and Orton are making.
Why not sign me and cut one of them? Especially if I'm never going to get a chance to play anyway?
It's also interesting to note how that "great" Bears defense gets exposed yet again. It STILL can't beat a team with a GREAT offense. Outside of the victory over the Saints last year (once in 19 games), EVERY time the Bears play a really good offensive team that can put points (not just yards) on the board, they LOSE.
GREAT defenses shut down GREAT offenses and prevent them from scoring when it matters. They don't just beat up on the Chiefs.
All you Bears homers that insisted the cake schedule had "nothing to do with it" when you beat up on some of the worst teams in the NFL at this same time last year might want to take a look at THIS years schedule and your win-loss record.
Looks like quality of competition plays a big part in how many games you win eh?
Unfortunately, the Bears have a GM who can't make good personnel decisions on the offensive side of the ball, a head coach who doesn't learn from his repeated mistakes, an over-rated defense that cant stop GREAT offenses from scoring, and an offensive coordinator who is as unimaginative as they come.
And it shows.
lovie must realize that he too could be out of a job if there isnt a change soon. i like rex (why i dont even know) but iam just a tired old fan that wants a winner back home and now and then he even shows a little something that makes you think that he may turn it around like that one drive when he ran for the first down and then he reminds us of how it realy is (this guy isnt even a back up on a good team). it is time to get rid of him and anyone else that doesnot want to be a winner on this team and benson should be next also who was the guy that didnt want a 100 plus yard runner like jones..
as much as i ( an avowed rex-basher ) love to harp on rex's many inadquicies. rex is about 4 or 5 on my list for last nights whippin. 1. adam archuletta flat out stinks. he is slow , and recievers just stopped in his zone and he was incapable of closing. 2. Benson is soft , weak , and a weirdo. Peterson is only a third down back. 3. lack of a consistant pass rush. 4.failure of all the other "big name , big salaried players to step up. ie. urlacher etc. 5. rex, i actually felt bad for him . he seems to be just throwin up prayers, hoping they will be answered. not so much , instead we were throwing up .
well now you see it the offensive line sucks, the trouble with grossman he has no offensive line to hold make holes the runnig backs no openings,if he were the qb for indi,or new england they would say yee this is great, and when you have left is throwing the football, your not going to beat anybody, look at greenbay they saw their offensive line was bad they improved it the same way with the cowboys, yes replace grossman with the back ups and then watch grossmans and see if you see a little smile when the backups have the same problem no runners no pass protection no holes for the runners this coach needs to look beyond grossmans play and he will see no matter who is in there you got to get blocking for your runners and protection for you qb.
It seems everybody can see Rex can't get job done except Lovie & his staff .Benson not exactly impressive either. Bears should of kept Jones & ship Benson out. How similar are the fates of two local sport teams. Both Bears & Sox either won it all or came close only to fall in a hurry. This due to poor management choices & bad deals.
Rex was bad..
Receivers were bad
O line was bad
D was bad
Also, did anybody notice the right OT for the cowboys? A guy (Columbo) the Bears thought couldn't play any more kept our high priced DE (Wally) away from Romo.
The four words Chicagoans cannot wait to hear: "Post Rex Grossman Era."
He has to be one of the most inconsistent at his position in a very long time. NOT GOOD! In the middle of the second quarter, Dallas realized they couldn't run the ball so decided to throw, throw, and throw some more. In the middle of the second quarter, the Bears realized they couldn't run against a team who ranks near the bottom of every passing catagory, and they decided to run, run, and run again. I just hope Rex' luggage is big enough to hold Ron Turner, because as bad as Rex has been, Turner's been worse.
The best thing the Bears could do right now is not to bench Rex, but to cut him - what good does he do sitting on the bench when his contract expires at season's end anyway? Give Griese a chance, and make it clear that Orton is our QB of the future. This is not rocket science. It was obvious to the whole world Sunday night that Rex is not an NFL QB, not because he can't make a play once in a while, but because he doesn't inspire his team and simply lacks the intangibles that were clearly on display with Tony Romo - in his first full season as a QB (remember that tired excuse?).
Please, Lovie, end this nightmare now, and wake up the rest of the team.
If Grossman plays another down for the Chicago Bears, the entire coaching staff should be fired before the next play is run. He makes the worst decisions I have ever seen a QB make. He is incapable of learning from his mistakes, he seems to only want to repeat them. The INT he threw that got returned for a TD looked exactly like the one he threw in the Super Bowl. How he continues to get on the field absolutely boggles my mind. He must have some dirt on Lovie Smith or Ron Turner that he is threatening to release over the web if he doesn't play. That is about the only explanation for why they keep putting this guy in the game. I'd rather see Devin Hester take direct snaps the whole game than see Grossman step foot on another NFL field for the Bears.
As of last night I've decided I won't watch another minute of a Bears game that Rex Grossman is starting. I really have nothing against the guy, but seeing him juxtaposed with Tony Romo just made it abundantly clear he has no idea how to play QB at the NFL level on a consistant basis.
While I love the Bears, I can't support a coaching staff that is too stubborn to admit they are wrong, and acknowledge the obvious. Rex should no longer be our quarterback.
Here is an idea, dump Rex, dump Lovie, and Dump Angelo. It's sad when they are all holding on to a clueless QB, "We're so close", geez he can't even lie well. As for the love fest from the bigs, give me a break, Lovie and Angelo got lucky with a soft schedule last year. This year shows that they didn't belong last year. Not only that but they dumped a Defensive coordinator who was good for the Bears. Until they change, they will continue to suck this year. Take the year off boys, real men are playing this year.
I would love to believe that Wrecks is done in Chicago, but that kind of hope is dangerous. Where it leaves me is the following scenario:
Grossman will finish out the season, even though Lovie hints that changes could come at any position. It won’t come at this one. Grossman will continue to march an inertia-less offense into one of the most stagnant and depressing seasons in late memory. My real hope is this: we have such a horrible season, I mean the type that the early Buccaneers had, which exposes Grossman to the ownership and cannot cover-up his incompetence and wretched inconsistency, not like a season of 14-2 can do to “overlook” what’s happening, because, after all, we are still winning games. And, pick up a decent draft pick.
But, Chicago is stubborn. Grossman is more than likely to receive a contract extension, for at least a year or two, the sort of “good-faith” extension for those proving ground picks who spent the first few seasons bandaged up on the sidelines. We’ll use the draft picks to plug any leaks in the defense, which by that time, two years down the road, will have disbanded due to the “Rex Effect” and they’ve played twice as much defense as any other in the league and they’re exhausted. It will lead to the downward-spiral of the franchise for six years before they have fully rebuilt and will be contenders again.
Hey X (I can't speak the name of the Bears QB), don't let the door hit you on the way out!
Griese is a former Probowler. I can't understand the thinking behind keeping him on the bench. The few times he's been allowed to take snaps that I've seen, he's moved the offense down the field. What is going to take to wake Lovie up??
Rex still looks like a deer in the headlights, will the Bears ever get a QB? Sent him packing, start a new QB and get on with this lost cause. Lose the cover 2 we give up way too many big plays
The Bears are like the Sox last May...toast for the season.
I stood by Rex all last year saying things like "it's his first year after not having to go through rehab, wait til next season". He seem to be even worst this season. There is not many teams in the league with the offensive weapons (not Marshmallowman Benson), matched with the defense and special teams (Hester) like the Bears. I also blame the line play, but if Griese don't throw up panic pleas when rushed, maybe it's time for a change. And I can't see a reason to sign Rex next season, but the Bears need to make a serious move toward getting a quality arm in the fold if they don't. Griese is only a bandage cure.
OUT DAMN SPOT....OUT! A LOYAL BEARS FAN WHO LIVES IN ORLANDO AND ALSO AN FSU FAN (UGLY YEAR)...GROSSMAN WAS LUCKY WITH THE GATORS, SEND HIM TO MIAMI......BRING ON BRIAN
BEAR DOWN!!!!!
Rex peaked in college. He's not a horrible QB, just a bad one for Chicago. He may be able to find a good fit with another team; but, for whatever reason, he just can't get the job done in Chicago.
Yes, get rid of him! All the "i told you so's" are laughing right now. biggest mistake the bears made in the last 5 years...bears could have won a superbown by now with all the weapons...minus the qb
Bench Grossman, start Griese! After we do that, then what? I hate to say this an injury prone quarterback that has been a backup most of his career is not the solution either. We need to look for a new quarterback, heck they should have done it in the offseason.
Screw, Rex, he's never been the issue. To be an issue you have to mean something to someone--Rex doesn't qualify.
The whole issue is Brian Griese--your only salvation. Lovie, if you don't like Griese then please trade him to one of at least 10 NFL teams who would start him tomorrow. I can't stand to watch your Bears any longer, and either can Griese. Please, Lovie, put both Brian and I out of our misery and trade Griese--NOW.
I'm a Saints fan from Louisiana. We know what it's like to see stubborness from coaches in the face of fan opposition to personnel decisions. But for the life of me, what does Lovie and company possibly see in Rex, other than he is a polite, soft-spoken young man. Being an LSU and SEC fan as well, I was perplexed when someone actually drafted him as high as the Bears did.
I'm bringing rexy back, to Florida
It's not going to get any better, Rex is making NO progress. It's time for a change.
after wrecks had scrambled for ten yards for a first down in the 3rd quarter then threw a couple good passes to set up Benson's one yard dive into the end zone I thought ok now he's looking like a good QB, unfortunately that was all he had in his tank and the defense missing Harris, Vasher and Briggs got carved up like a Thankgiving turkey. If wrecks starts again next week I doubt I will be able to bring myslf to watch the game. I doubt Greise or Orton are the answer but at this juncture neither can be any worse. Tony Romo proved the value of a mobile QB last night. How many times did he turn what looked to be a sack into gains of 10+ yards? It's time to bite the bullet and give wrecks a headset and clip board see what someone else can do to salvage the remainder of the season.
I don't see many games because of where I live, so when they are on national TV I feel fortunate to watch. Not last night. I watched into the 4th qtr but only to see if Lovie Dovie would yank Gross man. I did see a familiarity in Gross man and Luvy. They both look dazed and confused. Gross man looks more like Bob Avelini every year.
Sorry Rex. You need to go. Your finished in the NFL you no talent a** clown.
I am a Green Bay fan and as great as it is to see Chicago lose, its not even fun to see Grossman ruin a franchise.
This is rhetorical, right? The only way that Rex'll be back in Soldier Field next year is if he decides to come and watch a game on a Sunday. Even then, he'd better get a really good disguise or he won't make it out alive.
Rex punched his ticket a long time ago, unfortuneately Lovie is a poor conductor and forgot to pick it up.
I do believe Rex is about to take the express train to the bench. This guy is Horrible. He has no type of athletic ability. He has club hands and two left feet. Lovie needs to show some type of coaching character. He needs to show some B@#ls. The Bears organization has no respect for the fans as well as the players. If this nut isn't performing well or even trying, bench his ass. As I stated earlier in the season, on this Blog sight. He(Rex) is no leader, the team will fall apart mentally and physically,(Due to Bad decisions, and horrible passing techniques). Lovie needs to know that African American coaches only last one bad season. Lovie needs to let Chicagoans know how he truely feels and not what the Bears management is telling him to say. We shouldn't have to go through this nightmare. Bears management should respect us, the FANS....
Rex Grossman is done in Chicago...Ced is next
Rex shoulda woulda coulda been done a long time ago....Grossman is who I thought he was...to answer, yes, he will never see the field in a Bears Uni again...
Rex Grossman is done in Chicago...Ced is next
I had the Chargers, Cowboys, and Green Bay games as the ones who would do Rex in...It's better sooner than later....Putting Orton in is better sooner than later, too, but it won't happen...
Rex Grossman is done in Chicago...Ced is next
Cedric is just as done depending on the cap hit we take...a slow, plodder who fumbles....nice
Rex Grossman is done in Chicago..Ced is next
Orton at QB
AP, Wolfe, and Hester rotated in at RB
Rex Grossman is done in Chicago...Ced is next
ok, I'm giddy... sing....
"Without.....RexandCed".....
We'll make a play-we won't look gay-What big sisseeeeez.....
"Without.....RexandCed"
We'll be able to fight instead of flight...What big Wusseeeeez
We'll never forget why you traded TJ...Ceds a pud...Where's Kyyyyyyle?
"Without.....RexandCed"
We'll do more than useless praying for a crowwwwwwn

I was embarrassed for my team last night. You can't leave the defense on the field that long against a great offensive line. We have to bench Rex now. I don't know if he's done here or not, but I'm tired of the bi-polar QB'ing that I'm seeing. He obviously has talent. He showed some moxie in the 3rd quarter. But, then he showed himself to be obviously overmatched in the 4th. I'm not saying that we have to blow it up and start over. I'm saying that we have to find a QB that can at least show the ability to feel the rush and step up or side step. This guy just stands there and lets guys run straight to him. At one point, he ran into a sack. If he is going to finish the season here, put him in the shotgun and leave him there. Stop putting him under center. Rex and Turner must go.
I have to think that this is it for Grossman. If it's not then Grossman must have some compromising evidence against Lovie Smith that makes Smith not pull him. How much more does Grossman have to do to get pulled? The offense is just awful right now and a lot can be blamed on Grossman. He's had way too many turnovers and not moved the offense nor put points on the board. It's not like it's just been three games that this has happened. It's half of last season too. Smith is going to lose the whole team if something doesn't change and soon. At 1-2 they are two games behind a resurgent Packer team that looks real. Minnesota will give them problems because they have a very good defense and the Lions will score on the Bears so the team has to be able to move the ball and put some points on the board at some point. I think that Kyle Orton is really the future of the team, but Brian Griese should now be the present. The change should be made to Griese to try and save this season. With the way they are playing now and the mounting injuries they might not make the playoff's. If the Bears don't make the playoff's then they should give Orton a chance late in the season.
Okay, Roman, let's try this again. Last week you told me you thought the team would be well above .500. Still think that now? Let me also put forward this theory for consideration: there never was a Good Rex. It just took other NFL teams several games to adjust to the Bears suddenly throwing the ball much more. By last season's Miami game, the adjustment was over and effectively so was Rex.
Roman responds: I still think the team will be at least two games over .500. I think Griese, while limited, can lead the offense better than Rex. Everything depends on the injuries to the defense, but yes, I'll stay with at least a 9-7 record. I know that's not "well" over .500, but I'm tweaking it.
Man, it's hard to think otherwise. He's small, immobile, emotionally fragile and quite frankly he can't have a very high football IQ. Every week, he knows what he does wrong, says the right thing to the media afterwards, and then goes out the following week and does the same self-destructive things. I appreciate the situation the Bears are in, as you learn your "franchise" quarterback lacks the fundamental qualities you thought you'd drafted 5 years ago 3 games into your "sophomore jix" season, after being super bowl runner up. Furthermore, I understand the points made by the NBC commentators regarding going to a 10 yr pro to attempt to salvage this season not necessarily being the answer...but what is. I'm more concerned with the offense as a whole rather than just Rex. Blocking schemes and execution are poor, runners that lack heart and have fumble-itis, receivers who run poor routes and have the drop-sies in big situations all spell an offense that is almost dead last in every offensive statistic. But as Rex said himself, it starts with him. The QB has to have moxie. Every time I see him in big games and tough situations, he has that "deer in the headlights" look in his eyes. As someone who played, I can tell you Griese is better suited at this time. Romo mad a great post-game comment when asked about his counterpart and his struggles. He said something to the effect of, "you can't really manage the game in this position...you have to read, and just react based on instinct..." Both he and Rex have been in the league for 5 years with roughly 1 full season of experience. The difference is obvious. Plan B should come no later than the first game of Lovie's "second quarter of the season"...if he wants to salvage this one.
Rex is rank at he bottom of most stats in the NFL which means he is not pro material. He will not wake up one day and become a reliable pro quarterback. Something has to change for the bears and fans to believe there is hope for the season. REX IS A BUST!!!
When will Smith learn? He has backed some losers lately-remember the Tank-think he told the Cowboys anything about the-Bears? If Grossman doesn't go to the bench and someone else is not given a chance then Smith should go. Also, someone teach the Bears to tackle and catch the ball. Again, isn't this the head coach's job? Doesn't the buck stop with the head coach? These guy's get paid to perform. One more thing-somebody smack that grin off Romo's face, please! You guessed it I am not a Lovie Smith fan.
Yesterday's game was an overall bummer, and certainly Rex deserves to hear boos loud and clear. However Berrian dropped two important passes right on the money, Moose was able to get open only once and ran poor routes all game, roll-out passes seem like a foreign concept to Turner, and the defense looked like a bunch of tired old men suffering from arthiritis.Even Hester looked terrible with fumblitis and tunnel vision.I'm for Greg Olsen replacing Moose for a while and Bradley giving Berrian a bench seat. They couldn't do worse than what we've seen so far, and maybe guys worrying about their jobs instead of all the blame being shouldered by Rex would show us something like last year's team.
Grossman will not make it through this year. However, the lack of options at QB will have him starting next week for sure. If he delivers anything positive he will remain in. Potentially when they fall to 2-5 and the Pack are rolling at 6-1, a change will be made - but it will be too late - and any Bears fan can't like their prospects with Greise or Orton and the helm
The whole team stunk it up last night. Bears D looked terrible against the pass. They couldn't stop Romo. And where was the pass rush? Even with Tommie Harris back Romo had far too much time on many occasions to pick out one of his numerous weapons. Twice the Cowboys marched 80+ yards for 7. The second time converting on 3 & 11 from their own endzone, surley a backbreaker after Rex and company just capped off their most impressive drive of the season.
This was a collective meltdown. However, it was the offences turn to bail out the defense. Haha! Lets face it - If the D doesn't play a great game - Bears lose
At least we have the Cubbies!
It's sad. We have such high hopes for a QB that refuses to stop throwing the ball to cover 3 receivers and shirts that don't belong to us. He sees the people he's throwing to just like what we see from tv. The sad part is what we see and what we know he sees is the same thing: a well defended receiver. But no, Wrecks has to throw to him anyway and say to himself, "well here goes nothing (how right you are Wrecks), I hope he catches it". Anybody is better than Wrecks or even a Chicago QB period. Where's Byron Leftwich? We have had 20 QB's start in the last 10 years and the one time we get to the Super Bowl, the whole season was based on defense. Pay the jail for Michael Vick, matter of fact, get Jim McMahon back or even Archie Manning. Chicago will never win the big one until we get someone who can scout QB's like a microscope in lab class, and I mean never. Still love you Bears.
Ok, so bench Grossman or don't, but he's gone after this year anyway. McNabb for next year's QB!!!!!
Perhaps if Rex would think about job security, he'd be a better player. He must be oblivious to his jeapordy as a starter. Why else repeatedly throw into two- and three-man coverage? If i'm on the verge of being shown the door, the last thing i'm going to do is throw the ball away. Take the sack, idiot! At least then the vultures can lay blame on the linemen, or at least your inability to scramble, versus your lack of throwing prowess and your bad descision-making. Think about your job, Rex, and save your team. Lord knows if you realy cared about your team you would silently slink away into the night. I hear Culver's is hiring in Peotone.
What is it about Chicago teams that give up their good players so
that they can draft bums the following year. Chicago has never
had a quality quarterback and that means McMahon also. He just
happened to have a defense that scored as many points as he did.
Our scouts and management really stink at evaluting talent. I just
hope those stupid Philly fans dump McNabb and he comes back home.
I backed rex all offseason and got alot of he can't make the correct reads. I now have to go with the crowd we need to let the door hit him where the good lord split him.
I was reading the Tribune before the game and all the writers (with one exception) picked Chicago to win. The vast majority of these 'experts' said that Romo has not faced a defense like Chicago and that a true test of a quarterback is how well he will do against a good defense. Well- to be honest, I didn't see the Bears defense out there. Romo is the same age as Grossman and has shown that he can grow with the position. Most solid athletes will do just that. I've been complaining about Grossman for the last two years and my colleagues have been saying- no he's good- just needs more playing time. It hurts- but he's done. He hurt the pride of our city- he's demolished (on his own) the confidence of the defense and the offense. I am not sure why Lovie is getting off so easy because Rex has been his baby since the beginning. You can't be a good coach and continue to make bad decisions week after week.
I think if you want to put the blame of the loss on Rex, go ahead. He is the face of the team being the quarterback. But if you watched the game you would see there are many more people to blame. Lets start with the receivers. Bernard Berrian dropped at least three balls, one that would have been a touchdown bass. The three interceptions were passes intended for Muhsin Muhammed, but on two of them him his routes were very poor and he was not in the spot he was supposed to be. Next Cedric Benson, start running with the promise of a first round pick and hold onto the football. The offensive line looked like a sieve. Special teams looked horrible, including Devin Hester who could not hold onto the football as well. The defense, excluding Briggs and Urlacher, could not stop anybody. We could not get any pressure on the quarterback and our secondary had holes all over the place. Last, the coaching staff just got beat. The Dallas staff was much better on Sunday making adjustments that won them the game.
So to put all the blame on Rex is ludicrous. If were not for Rex, our only touchdown would not have happened. The scramble to keep the drive alive, out of the shadow of our own goal, led to the only Bears touchdown. Does he deserve criticism, of course. That interception that Henry returned for a touchdown was a very poor decision and one he should never have made. Could this performance cost him his job, sure. But if Brian Griese is the answer, then why is he not in there in the second half? Because he is not the answer nor will he ever be the answer! Remember during preseason when everyone was calling for Kyle Orton to be the second string quarterback, I do.
The fact of the matter is the team just got beat in every phase of the game. The team needs to step up and show the Lions, and the rest of the league, next week that they still are a great team and part of the elite of the NFC.
Good Riddence !!!
Grossman is awful
The fish stinks from the head down. Playing Rex when he doesn't perform isn't his decision. It doesn't excuse his play, but it certainly magnifies the ineptness of management.
Lovie is nothing but a coporate puppet, when his lips move, you can hear D'Angelo.
Pride goeth before the fall, and the team is plummeting.
In a world where a player can dictate to management I want to be number one running back, and the response is he'e right, he should be #1, because I paid a lot of money for him, so let me get rid of the over achiever, and keep my pet project happy!
Real world, shut up!, You'll play where we put you. We're paying your salary, take it or leave.
Ever notice how good the defense is for about 2 1/2 quarters? Then something mysterious happens. The other team's offense starts racking up yards and points. What has haapened? It's called adjustments. They make them at half time, and they flourish. While our coaches sit there stubborn as all get out and refuse to make similar adjustments. They don't make adjustments, because that would mean they're wrong can't have that, it might shake their confidence.
Didn't we try this Ron Turner thing a few years ago? It still ain't working, looks like John Shoop has grown old and put on a few pounds.
The team will go as far as their talent will take them. Not the talent of the players, the talent of their management. It's looking bleak.
Talk about groin pulls, the fans are getting yanked pretty good here. It'd be nice to see it reveresed to management, but then again, you gotta have something to yank.
Grossman will never lose his job as long as Smith/Angelo have any say about it. They both got their contract extensions, what incentive do they have to get rid of Rex? Smith got a big fat contract because of Angelo, so he won't make a change. Angelo won't tell Smith to make a change because he would have to admit he blew ANOTHER 1st round pick.
That is how the world works people!
Roman: are you going to allow everyone who posted the 13-3 and 12-4 season record estimates to have a do over? I'll stick with my 9-7, thanks.
Like I said last year, Grossman should have been replaced after the Miami game. Imagine how different things might be now if that had happened. Now the Bears have wasted a year and a half with Grossman and as I have said OVER AND OVER AND OVER on this board, much of the defensive talent will be gone after this year and no free agents are going to come here when they see the incompetence of the coaching staff and the GM.
What a waste.....what a waste....
It's actually time they give Orton a chance. He is only 24 years old and has good size for a QB at 6'4", 220. He already showed he can play smart when he was forced into action as a rookie. Now with 2 years of studying the playbook, let's see what he can do. And don't forget, he came from the same system that produced Drew Brees.
wrexs is the worst qb in the league! instead of scrambling he runs 10 yards back and gets sacked. what is the deal with that?? butus chicagoans know that we are doing the right thing by booing him out of town!! come on lovie we love are football trust us get wrecks out before he wrecks our season witch he already started to do.
I'm not a fan of Grossman, but can someone explain to me what our coaching staff did at halftime? I'll tell you what they did - Nothing! Clearly Dallas made adjustments and came out with a plan for the 2nd half and they kicked our a**es! Same thing that we saw in the Superbowl - we got outcoached! Rex has to be held accountable for his terrible play, but the coaching staff should not get off lightly.
IT LOOKS LIKE WE BEAR FANS WILL SUFFER NOW FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS...WHY? IT TAKES TIME TO DEVELOP A QB AND A TEAM MEAN WHILE THE TEAM GETS OLDER AND LOSES IT...todays players are faster, stronger and maybe not as smart as years gone by...as i see it the season is over for the bears maybe they will finish 9-7... now is the time to bench players for the second string...if i were the coach i trade or bench all the running backs and replace them with rookies only...i bench and or release all the qb and keep ortin until a rookie qb is found... lastly i would put in the players contracts a production clause no win no pay and that goes along for the coaches... what say you...jake...
I just can't quite get that a Bears head coach is named Lovey! When he talks he intimates that the offense is a necessary evil. He talks more in terms of goals and scoring about the Defense. The offense is geared to "not lose" - not setup to agressively win. And that so-called maestro Jerry Angelo - what did they do in the last draft to beef up the offensive line after Olson? It would seem the wrong coach left last year. It should have been Turner. Lousy play calling, lousy offensvie schemes and routes. A "short" quarter back and they don't occasionally roll him out to get a better look at the field. "Point Rushes!!" That is what Madden said all night - too predictable on offense?? The players have to perform but I think the stink is more on the heads of the coaching!
How can Lovie Smith not make a change this week and still keep his credibility? If the intent is to win, how does he justify leaving a player in who clearly has not learned from his mistakes and hasn't seemed to improve since he first got here? Last night should be an eye-opener for Lovie as he got to finally see a QB who has shown progress. Too bad that QB was on the other team. Shouldn't Grossman be held accountable just like his teammates are? Lovie is seemingly confusing stubborness for resolve. It's time to bag Rex.
Hate to sound like most everyone else but THE REXPERIMENT should be over!! In fact,it should have been over last year while special teams and defense allowed this putz to attend the Super Bowl and be a big part of losing that too! He's too short (as can't see over defense to pass down the middle of the field)..and too dumb as he keeps making the same mistakes along with the same excuses WEEK AFTER WEEK!! I've gotten to the point that when watching the games I am just waiting for something to go wrong and sure enough it happens week after week! He and the mumbling..fumbling.. inept poor excuse who attempts to play half back should both be run out of town immediately if not sooner. And that also goes for the statue called the head coach. The defense collapsed because of injuries.. because of being on the field too long.. because of THE REXPERIMENT!! Sick and tired of being sick and tired I remain Streamwood Frank
I have a sinking feeling the the Bears moment was last year and it was wasting developing a quarterback who will never develop. If Harris's injury is minor, put Griese in and see if a caretaker with the D and special teams can make another run. If the injury is major put Orton in and see if he is the Q of the future.
What was with the stupidity at the end of the first half?? Seen that before. The Bears might need to hire someone to keep track of what is going on on the field.
A QB should be a leader, Watching that game last night, it seemed as though the Bears just quit on Rex. The defense had the stuffing pounded out of them for 45 minutes last night because the offense could not sustain a drive. There are so many problems with this team that just replacing Grossman will not fix it. But replacing Rex is a start, because his teammates seem to have no faith in him. BB probably dropped that pass because he was astonished to see a football coming his way, hitting him in stride, with some open field in front of him.
Rex is good at throwing the ball downfield. We have not aired it out a single time this year. Devin was moved to offense to get him the ball more. He's touched it zero times on offense. I blame those problems on Ron Turner. Dropped passes, fumbles, not running routes properly- these are not grossman's problems. Those are mistakes that Grossman's teammates continually make that make him look bad. I'm very angry with Rex. Wouldn't be surprised if he never plays again. However, the problem goes way beyond him.
Also, I'd like to note that Babich's "aggressive" style of defense is why our D is so beat up. We're selling out, blitzing like desperate maniacs, and getting hurt. Mike Brown was hurt on a blitz when the game was already over. I'll take Rivera's laid-back bend but don't break D any day over this desperate looking blitz fest. We're not playing to the strength of our team and now over half of our defensive starters are hurt. Great work Bob.
For everyone to simply blame Rex, although he is bad, is absurd.
John Madden pretty much summed it up in 4th QRT when cement-booted Rex took a sack while dropping straight back. Madden says -"If that's Romo back there he avoids the rush and you're still playing football". Except cement boots Rex falls back and gets dropped. With any blitz pressure Rex is toast. There's no future for him here - and Lovies ills me with his robotic weekly chants of "Rex is our quarterback". Are you contractually required to say that every week Lovie?
Lots of Drops too though.
I do think the team finally turned on Rex last night.
Perhaps a little bench action wouldnt hurt him in the long run either.
Im sick of Short QB's
Love BlackwiseMan's comment about Black coaches.....i was wondering how long till someone played the race card. Nice one.
We blew it not bringing Lefwich in and now were stuck with Uncle Griese and little Cousin Kyle.
Ive never seen so many people come out of the woodwork just to bash the Bears and Rex....please...dont tell us who your a fan of when you open your post, it doesnt add any credibility to your statement.
Roman...were you booing?
I'm not calling for Rex to be benched due to turnovers but because his teammates seem to have lost all faith in him.
This has to be the end for Grossman starting. He deserved to start the season to find out if he matured from last year and it's clear now he hasn't. The coaches decision to install an offense limiting his mistakes also doomed him. How many times can you throw the same out patterns. The defenses know what's coming, Benson up the middle and short passes to the sidelines. Change QB's now and the Bears can possibly still salvage the season. I'd much rather see Orton get a chance than Griese. Griese is a backup and nothing more. I think Orton has a better chance of injecting some life into the offense. Anyone that says acquiring Leftwich is the answer must not watch much football. He's as immobile as they come, makes bad decisions and how long would it take for him to learn the Bears offense anyway.
Rex engineered two good drives - and then literally threw two more away before they started. When he scrambled for that 12-yard first down and picked up 75 yards on the next two passes, I thought he'd turned a corner out of sheer desperation. It seemed that if he didn't convert on third and ten, his season was over, and he knew it. And then his first pass of the next drive is picked off for a touchdown. (Sigh.)
Rex deserves a lot of the blame, but obviously it's not all his fault - the O-line is porous, his receivers drop his few good passes, and Ron Turner's play calling is wretched. I mean, third and 24 on your own four...and you run? What's that do to your QB's confidence? What's that do period? You might as well just take a knee. Benching Rex will just stop the bleeding, not heal any wounds.
Rex should be done! DO Not put in brian griese either. He's old.Put in Kyle Orton and see if he can orchestrate.Kyle or Wait till nexy season and try and sign our hometown guy Donavan McNabb or Tony Romo even!!!
I can't believe what i'm seeing and hearing from lovie smith. Griese may not be the answer but I'd rather see a bear crap in the woods than go through one of these games again!
The Bears need to bench Rex.Put Kyle Orton in as starting QB.Griese is too old andnot what we need.Kyle will do ok. Then next year bears should make a run for Donavan McNabb or even Tony Romo!!The Bears have not had a good QB that i can remember ever!!!
Rex a first round draft choice was schooled by an undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois. Lets face it though, Romo would not be nearly as good with the Bears coaching staff and play calling. That said I agree he needs to go (sooner rather than later). As far as the Bears D not being able to stop a great offense, what D can when they are on the field 75% of the game because their inept offense cannot get a first down or continually commits turnovers. That guy is an obvious Packer fan and has no common sense whatsoever. The Bears D is so injured now that they will need the offense to keep them off the field more than ever and that is something that CB and RG cannot do. I say start Adrian Peterson and Kyle Orton and if that doesn't work go to Griese. Grossman needs to be an emergency QB at most. I was one of the fans that was willing to give him a chance this year, but at this point I think he has had enough chances.
I have never seen a player in any sport be given the coddling that Rex Grossman has gotten. Is it any wonder that he hasn't shown any marked improvement when he is given no competition? Why should he when he is protected like no other?
It's 1986, folks,
The Bears have exactly 2 players on offense. One in the middle of the line and one wide receiver. No blockers, no rushers and no passers.
By the time this is remedied Urlacher and crew will be done and gone.
1986? Two decades until they contend again.
Wow, after all that swagger in the pre-season and Lovie's "I got it all under control" coolness, the Bears have landed with a thud three games into the season.
Rex may be "the" major concern, but let's not stop there. Every phase of the Bears game was put under NBC's national spotlight and failed -- except the tight ends who contributed mightily to at least one Bears drive, but never were involved again (good play calling, Ronnie T).
The O-line is old, creaky and porous
The Offensive Coordinator calls plays as if he is watching some other game than the one the Bears are playing in.
Cedric has the dropsies
Moose drops what is close to him and stares down Rex on any errant ball
Griese is not the answer
Archuleta is over-rated (does he realize he has arms that can be used to tackle someone or is he being paid only to use his shoulders on tackles?)
The tight ends played well, but were used in only one drive (or at least it seemed that way)
Oh well, the season is still young and I picked the Bears to go 10-6, which is realistic (I hope). Not like Roman, who picked them to go 13-3.
It's not panic time, but if the Bears can't post at least 28 points on the Lions, then Griese has to play.
is any one else tired of hearing about what Grossman did at the beginning of last season??? this is pathetic. i mean even Orton won 9 games. play griese we have a good enough defense that if he could just not throw any to the other team and maybe throw 1 or 2 to our team we are winning every game. "FORGET BUSH, IMPEACH GROSSMAN!!!!"
i could care less how well he plays form here on in.
Can we bring back Cade McNown? He couldn't be any worse than Wrecks.
Rex, I would like you to meet Joey Harrington. Lived in Detroit during the 4 years that Joey Harrington tried hard to convince everyone that he was not bothered by his struggles and that he had great confidence in himself to improve and lead the Lions to victory each week. He became known as “Joey Blue Skies”. Later, after leaving Detroit, he admitted that he was never as confident as he pretended to be and that the fans reaction was troubling to him. Rex Grossman is that same person.
So Grossman is the only one at fault for this terrible loss...hmmm...how about Benson fumbling AGAIN, the offensive line not being able to protect a cup of soup, and Berrian and Muhammad dropping on-the-money passes more than once....im not saying Grossman is blameless but lets spread the blame on offense around!
Last night was a horrible TEAM effort all the way around, no doubt about it... BUT eventually, your QB, the leader of your offense, has to be able to make a play, and keep your team in the game. I also believe that the poor play by the QB also affects the team mentally as well, both on offense and defense. I'm sure the defense feels the weight of the world, because they know that they won't get anything from there lame duck QB!
Teams take cues from there leaders, QB being one of them.. if they don't have confidence in him, then it carries over in there play. To me, this is the reason they need to make a change at the most important position on the team...
C'mon, every QB in the NFL feels pressure, thats why they get all the glory, as well as the blame. The O Line wasn't great, but not every play goes as written... you have to improvise some times, which Grossman obviously can't do... He's short and slow, not a good combo!!!!
Better to do it now, being it's only the 3rd game, before the whole season is lost.
Jeez...where to begin? The game last night was just awful. Really, really depressing for any Bears fan. You could just sense the Bears were gonna get beat after Romo got hot at the end of the first half. Still, the game wasn't even close and the Bears got beat in every which way possible, on both sides of the ball.
I hate to admit it, but the Bears are just a mediocre team at best. They're not even close to competing with the likes of New England or Indi. Farve is gonna crucify 'em, no doubt.
They were mediocre last year, and they're worse this year-Rex or no Rex.
They suck and it's really sucking to be a lifelong Bears fan right now.>
Maybe Tommie Harris knows something we don't about next year... McNabb in '08?!?!?!?!?
We all know that Thomas Jones is laughing his butt off at Chicago's offense... once he left it has hurt to watch the Bears play.
Dallas isn't the only one with a T.O., we have one too. "Terrible Offense."
When will we finally put the ball into Hester's hands on offense??? Hike it to him directly and have 10 people block. Do something, ANYTHING to get him moving again.
Rex is done as a starter... I wish that was the only problem. Muhammed is terrible. Slow, old, and seems to lack the desire, a pick like Berrian the week before stops his route, I guess his 150,000 per week is not enough. It would be one thing if there was no one else, but Bradley is there along with Hester. And when will we run a play for Hester, like an end around???? And then there is Benson, soft as a cream puff, slow, battering ram player, and no hands, who would make a nice fullback, if they still had that position and he could block.... The problem is we don't have a playeer to take his place..... unless we had traded Briggs and taken Peterson.... And then we have Olsen, great hands, big target, one throw.... Who is in charge???
And tell me again why we think Turner can call a different play then ten yards to the sideline.... That play was called a dozen times and you didn't think the Cowboys would figure it out... Turner has been terrible... See what New England calls for there first 25 plays and use that, what an idiot.
Lovie needs to figure it out now or the season is done...
Sad to say but Wrecks has wrecked Da Bears! As you can read, the solutions to "right this ship" are not going to be simple nor easy. Lovie has to understand that the QB's leadership AND skills affect the ENTIRE team. Wrecks has neither!
What I'm not seeing in these blogs are the effects of an ineffective offense; they keep the defense on the field longer than they should... Thus, the defensive players are sacrificed in the altar of hard knocks, more opportunities to get hurt. Fatigue sets in, muscles tighten, bones and tendons flex to repeated pounding, and the mind begins to ask: "...how much can my whole being endure this and why do we keep taking this pounding..." Couple that with watching a horrendous offense on the sidelines, for a few seconds, and saying to yourself: "Hey, give us defensive players (and special teams) a chance to breathe, recuperate, and perhaps enjoy the game from the sidelines for a few minutes!" Seeing the opposing QB (same age as yours BUT different mental maturity and courage) dissect your team and having fun while doing it... will make you grieveously envious!
Did Wrecks punch his ticket out of town? Hell, he wrecked the entire transportation system that would have taken this Bears Team back to the Super Bowl. It's now "Wait 'til next year, when Wrecks (and/or Lovie, if he sticks with him) is no longer a Bear... I will always be a Bears Fan (here in California) BUT It's the CUBS' year!
I WENT TO BED BEFORE THE GAME EVEN ENDED- THAT'S HOW PATHETHIC IT WAS. THE WHOLE TEAM SUCKED AND I DON'T THINK EVEN GRIESE IS THE ANSWER. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME WAS SEEING REX RUN- SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN WISHING FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF SEASONS. I THINK WE SHOULD'VE HELD ON TO THAT ROOKIE QB...HE HAD POTENTIAL
AND ON A SIDE NOTE- I HAVE READ (WAY TOO MANY TIMES)ABOUT HOW IGNORANT DRUNKEN BEARS FANS ARE TO THE OPPOSING TEAMS FANS. THIS IS WRONG AND SENDS THE WRONG MESSAGE ABOUT THE FANS AS A WHOLE. PLEASE STOP IT AND LET EVERYONE ENJOY THE GAME (AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE). IF YOU CAN'T DRINK AND BEHAVE- THEN DON'T DRINK.
The FASCIO we saw Sunday night by a person supposedly called a Bears PROFESSIONAL starting QB was typical of many other QB's drafted over the past 40-50 years except the PUNKY QB Jim McMahon. Management stays with a loser for years! We loyal FANS suffer with fustration and disgust. Great Defenses lose their heart to play or get over exhausted due to Bears Offenses going into the toliet with 3 an out or interception ittis.
Most of the blame goes to Grossmans lack of talent, poor pro-style tools/size/including small hands, understanding of coverage and etc..... This Sunday also brought again to lite some of the POOR veteran receivers who have the dropsies & can't tackle anyone who makes an interception. Only Todd Olson looked good with a great catch having only 2 balls thrown his way.
Benson runs like a slow train to no where, falls down on slight contact & is a BUST..... A.D. is so-so. Time to play Wolfee or sign a free agent for a year or two who has GUTS & running power. What a mess after 3 games and the season looking to go down in futility & disgust. Many of the Coaches don't have a clue on how to solve the problems & be more creative on Offense. We have a below average set of starting RB's & FB.
Grossman, some others players and coaches must be removed from the organization asap. Getting rid of Coach Rivera another management mistake amoung many. Time to start thinking of getting RID of LOVIE and bring in real a knowlegable football person known as Mike Singletary as Head Coach who has the Bears spirit, tradition and best interest at heart.
Dosen't this look like the 1986/87 season after the 1985/86 Bears Super Bowl winning season again. Poor management decisions, coaching changes, getting rid of players or allowing them to leave and not adding players but standing firm while the great Super Bowl team crumbled? Sure does!
Greetings from Section 105!
Booing, check (not even close to this bad last year)
Griese chants, check
Frustrated young Miss Julie, check
Mooooooooose chant confusion, zero
Of course I heard everything Roman. It sucked. Rex sucked. It's was difficult watching a guy like Romo destroy us like that, especially because everyone just kept wishing Rex was 1/2 the quarterback he is. We don't even need a super-stud kind of guy. Hell, Trent Dilfer has even won a Super Bowl. Just get someone in there that's going to keep us close and give us a chance to win the game. And no surprise, I still say that guy is not Brian Griese. This team will never be able to overcome a 24-point deficit. We've barely scored that much the entire season. The loss of Lance Briggs was palpable immediately, and when Tommie Harris went limping off, I think everyone kind of knew that our chances of repeating as NFC champs are dwindling fast. I hate that Super Bowl losers curse!
Roman responds: Yes, it was this bad last year. And there were chants for Griese last year, too. I don't have time now, but go back and check the stories. Google: Rex booing Soldier Field Griese.
Mr. McNabb, your play this past Sunday is how you SHUT UP THE MOUTHS of critics! Do it with a stellar performance! Now, simply come back and win again this upcoming Sunday!
Rex = Bad 2007 Bears' Season
Cedric = Bad 2007 Bears' Season
Lovie = Bad 2007 Bears' Season
Turner = Bad 2007 Bears' Season - Though the quarterback should know how to adjust a play that has been called and not throw interceptions!
GM = Bad 2007 Bears' Season
McCaskeys' = Terrible, Horrible, Insane Ownership/Stewardship of the Chicago Bears Organization because they believe dear ole' George Halas started it and they should never let it go!
Guess what McCaskeys'? SELL THE DAMN TEAM TO SOMEONE WHO CARES ABOUT WINNING! George Halas will be remembered!
Nobody keeps their job performing this terrible! NOT EVEN A DITCH-DIGGER!
If you cannot come to the microphone and be honest as the coach of the team, your players, the fans and even management (if there is one) has to wonder 'JUST WHAT IN THE HELL DO YOU MEAN - "This is another tough team lost."... AGAIN, AGAIN AND AGAIN!
Chicago Bears Organization, NO FAN, CRITIC, SPORTSWRITER is telling you to fire the present QB! Common sense dictates he does not know how to get the job done, sit his A$$ down, and give the back-up QBs a chance to help the TEAM win a freaking game!
Whatever happen to a quarterback switch during a game when one is struggling? Or we don't do that in Chicago? Who gives a damn the next day the media starts with the QB controversy? I thought the goal of competition is to win the game or am I wrong?
If a starting pitcher struggles, he is replaced with a reliever! Who cares if it is two different sports, "A CHANGE IS MADE FOR THE TEAM TO WIN!"
I DON'T blame Rex anymore, there is something else going on to CONTINUOUSLY use an inept player(s) AND KNOW IT!
And you guys/gals was upset Lance Briggs was holding out to get a long-term contract, I think it is clear why he was demanding one!
DK - "I am a Green Bay fan and as great as it is to see Chicago lose, its not even fun to see Grossman ruin a franchise."
You know it's bad when a Packer fan feels sorry for us Bears fans for putting up with Rex.
Yech.
pnitti:
"Here is an idea, dump Rex, dump Lovie, and Dump Angelo."
That's a great Idea. Dump Rex, and Lovie. Put Dick Jauron back in as head coach and pull Fred Miller out of retirement to play QB. We won't ever have to worry about losing in the Superbowl again.
You want your home team to win every regular season game? Move to San Diego California. You can cheer at every game during the regular season; and you can spend the post season planting daffodils.
"As for the love fest from the bigs, give me a break, Lovie and Angelo got lucky with a soft schedule last year. "
Sure, they got lucky last year; but what about the two successfull seasons prior to that?
Roman Modrowski:
"And did they hear the chants for Griese, or were they yelling "Mooooooose" (couldn't think of a word that rhymes with Griese)."
Hey, Rex Grossman keeps dropping the snaps. His hands must be "Greasy" from all of the Chicago-Style hot dogs.
Here's the deal people. Griese showed in the last game of the pre-season that he doesn't make much better passing decisions than Grossman, Orton is not as good at QB either, Leak is going to be starting for the Falcons next year.
Any trade deal that doesn't involve trading Brian "The Crutch" Urlacher is totally unrealistic.
Is Chicago as willing to part with their beloved 54 t-shirts and coffee mugs if it would give us a better shot at winning the SB this within the next few years?
Its not over until Keith LifeTime SouthSider weighs in.....
What I want to know is why sports scribes like Peggy Kusinski spent most of the spring telling us how the Bear's aerial game was being re-vamped into the latest version of Air Coryell. What was she smoking and why is she so easily duped?
I'm not a RG fan by ANY stretch, however Rex is playing up to his ability. Ironically, his limited skills actually fit the Bears model. If RG was surrounded by a solid running game, I expect different results.
The Bears have a speed defense. The complement to a speed defense is a ball control offense. Simple.
What did the Bears do in the offseason to improve their running game? One could argue they did the opposite (although TJ was marginal at best).
Shore up the running game and Rex becomes less important (i.e. Trent Dilfer). Run a ball control offense, eliminate offensive turnovers, keep the defense off the field, we're 3-0.
The first half of the puzzle has been in place - Solid speed defense.
The second half is still woefully lacking...a ball control offense.
The front office, ownership, and coaching staff let us down by refusing to finish the puzzle during the offseason.
Due to a lack of a running game, Rex is forced to be something that he is not (nor will he ever be), a prolific passer.
Can't we just for once spend the big money and bring in a proven re-tread?
Why not Kordell again?? He's mobile and athletic and move around in the pocket...not a great field general though...not very heady!
Roman responds: You just love to start stuff, don't you?
Why doesn't Rex ever play out of the shotgun? He's the only QB that I can think of that doesn't.
Rex hasn't punched NOTHING! AND HE KNOWS IT!!!! He ain't leaving unless Angelo leaves and that is not going to happen. We are stuck with him like the workers on the Dan Ryan expressway! Angelo is certain that Rex is going to be Brett Farve one day and he doesn't care how many games (and superbowls) we lose. He is Captain Ahab chasing Moby Dick! I hope I am wrong, but it appears that Lovie is a puppet. If that is the case I would be glad he didn't win the superbowl. The first black headcoach to win deserves to be the RIGHT man, not a company puppet. Angelo wants to be right and the Bears aren't playing to win; they're playing to groom Rex and that is wrong. He should not be learning on the job on this kind of team. I would understand if we were a bottom of the league team, then ok, but coming off a superbowl - no way! If Rex is our best quarterback - then all of them need to go! Get rid of the entire rotten basket! I am willing to watch a new guy be this bad, but not the same guy over and over like a scratched record!
What's frustrating is that is that the fans want to win NOW because we have some great players! But that is Chicago for yah. We always dabble in the mediocre. We refuse to be like the other major cities (NY and LA) and go for ours. Chicago fans deserve better.
I beliebe dat Rex is done in Chicago! Did you watch da game last night? I did until da fourth quater when I suffered my 32nd heart attack and da worst since Superbowl XLI (Blame Grossman for dat one too!) Lobie says "Rex is our quaterback" so I guess we'll keep losing. DEETKAH!!!!!!!!!!!
So much of this is off target. It's very easy to blame Grossman, but you can't seriously blame him for everything. Is Rex to blame for dropped passes that hit receivers right in their hands (and there have been several)? Is Rex to blame for no running game? Is Rex to blame for missed blocking assignments? I'm sure if you are anti-Rex enough you'll be able to find a way to blame him for everything. I agree totally that Rex is playing poorly, but so is the ENTIRE offense (including the coaches). And the question isn't whether Rex is playing poorly -- the question is whether the Bears will actually be better with Orton or Griese -- THAT is what should be being discussed. As sad as it is to say, I don't think either of them are a step up and, unlike Griese, Grossman can still actually improve (he can't actually get any worse).
Lovie is gonna ride Rex to mediocrity like Lou is riding RyanDempster. It's set up to fail and they will trsut me
Yes, Rex is horrible. Surrounded by top flight talent at Florida he was marginal at best and should be benched for poor making decisions. But don't blame this on Benson. Start with an o-line that can't block. Since the 60's there have only been a handful of RB's that could dominate without a great line. Payton, Campbell, Brown, Simpson, Sanders, I'm sure I missed a couple. In this day and age of average backs, they all need blocking. When the blocking goes away (see larry Johnson @ KC) so do the yards and TD's. Larry Johnson sat on the bench and was labeled a crybaby by his coach while Priest Holmes dominated behind a stud line. When Holmes got hurt Johnson stepped in and became the greatest back in history for 2 years. This year without an o-line and a good QB all of a sudden he sucks. If you build a team around a "franchise" QB, then you better have insurance until you get an outsatnding O-line. None of the Bears QB's qualify as franchise types, but if you had a top five line with that defense you could make it deep ino the playoffs, and Benson would be more than adequate. Bottom line: When a RB gets the ball and runs 15 yards for a TD, there were 5 guys blocking for him, otherwise he wouldn't be prancing around the endzone taking credit for being great (exceptions: see list above). If they don't block he loses 3 yards, goes to the bench as worthless, weak, overpaid and overhyped, where he remains sucking on his thumb until the o-line gets replaced and he then gets another chance next week at becoming the greatest back in history. My 2 cents.
I still believe we have the guys on this roster to pull the division out...
Orton..QB
AP...RB
Berrian/Bradley...WR's
Olsen/Dez...TE's
Hester... Rashied Davis...Garret Wolfe....work em in...often
seems to me Bradley and Berrian would pose the biggest threats at WR...
and Hester isn't gonna get tired for crying out loud...he's an athlete....play him at RB and WR
We have the offensive weapons..put them on the field...and do it now, so by the end of the season we can use our entire playbook
Quit coaching the business....it's a game...the best athletes should be on the field irregardless of their contract statuses
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen...it's honestly that simple....
GROSSMAN PUNCHED HIS TICKET TO GET OUT OF TOWN LAST FEBRUARY IN MIAMI.
Grossman is the most underachieving QB the Bears have ever had. He is quickly becoming one of the worst QB's the Bears ever had.
If Lovie is foolish enough to stick with him for a few more games. Grossman can solidify the title of worst starting QB in Bears history.
I am sick of his lame excuses and promises that "we" will get better. He will make more stupid mistakes if he continues to play. There is no doubt about that. Grossman is simply a poor QB whose deficiencies outweigh his potential.
MAKE THE MOVE LOVIE AND END THE MISERY NOW !!!!
We are kidding ourselves if we think it is all Grossman's fault. When you surround an immobile pocket passer, with a sub-par offensive line, a soft running back who is a liability in the passing game, and an offensive game plan that would have a hard time posting points on the stout Northwestern Defense, what do you expect to be the result. Cedric Benson is not only soft and a liability in the passing game, his attitude on and off the field will prove to have a cancerous effect on this team. He is a selfish and player who seems to think of himself first, remember his contract holdout or how can you miss his demeanor on the sidelines, hat on, helmet on hip gazing out into space. Our offensive line can not seem to open holes for anybody to run through and to top that off look like they have never faced a stunting defensive line before in their lives. They are getting old and have undoubltably lost a step. On top of that Norv Turner has to be calling the plays by pulling them out of a hat. What happened to using our tight ends, a plan that has seemed not only to work really well last year, but throughout the Bears history. Our only good drive last night involved the tight ends for all expect about 15 yards by Grossman and Benson on the ground. Our offense has no real weapons that strike fear in other teams' defenses. How many of our running backs or recievers do you think were picked in the first three rounds of anybody's fantasy draft this year? You would think we would have gone after a reciever in free agency considering Moose is all but washed up and Bernard is best suited as a third reciever role, soley a deep threat. I think there was somebody out there who seems to be having a heck of a year with his new team, maybe Randy Moss? So Grossman has not recieved any support from his bosses in regards to putting him into a postion where he can succeed. Do we really think a 10 year veteran that has been passed around the league and has a reputation for not being able to win big games will fair any better with this supporting cast?
You know, as bad as Rex played - for the 4th game in a row (I'm including the Super Bowl)I am left wondering just what the heck the Bears organization thinks Ron Turner brings to the table! The offense is so dull and unimaginative, it looks like even a child could defend against it. When I see highlights from other teams where receivers are hit in stride down the sidelines, cutting across the middle - I get sicked at the sight of the majority of the pass plays being run by the Bears being corner routes - and sometimes seemingly, just thrown up for grabs. Let's not let Ron Turner off the hook. He sucks too!! God bless the defensive players for being good enough teammates not to voice what I'm sure they feel is a very negative opinion of the offense as a whole.
Roman, 9 and 7 with Rex as QB? Or do you mean with Griese as QB? From what I see the Defense can only bail water for so long. Book it, Bears best record with Rex will be 4 and 12. The season and schedule are just to brutal for them this year.
Worse still there are fans out there buying into the trash coming from Bear central. We'll work this out, it's only temporary.... Here's another one...Wait till next year.
Rex makes Steve Bartman look good!
Dave - why is it so easy to blame Grossman? Its funny how EVERYONE else is getting bad now isnt it? Who is to blame most of the time? Sometimes they just get tired of covering his mistakes! The Defense battles and battles a team down the field for 100 yards and they score; and then the offense turns the ball right back over to them before you can swallow down your gatorade! They are human. They have to get fired up after watching it over, and over, and over and over and over and over and over and over! (an "over" for every turnover Mr. Grossman caused this season).
Roman, if you're going to put me to work, you can at least put me on the payroll! I don't know, maybe it's just all in my perspective this year as opposed to last year. I'm so young and naive, you know. I have said before that we bought our plane tickets to Miami after we beat Seattle week 4 last year - I was that positive we would be there. You're a "team of destiny" kind of guy, Roman - didn't it just feel different at Soldier Field last year? I didn't know about your blog then, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one with that feeling. I'm not saying I didn't hear the boos and Griese chants last year, but it just didn't feel as urgent to oust our starting QB on team that kept finding a way to win. That's not the case this year. I think I'll take my chances and not purchase plane tickets to Phoenix ahead of time. Believe me, I don't object to the booing, although I don't do it, I just fail to see how it will help. Lovie's not listening.
The Chicago Bears can longer live in the past and trot out the name Sid Luckman when talking about the quarterback position. The Dallas game was an embarrassment! Our team suffered a serious "butt whipping" on national television followed by excuses. The quarterback position has evolved into athletes with elusive speed and make it very difficult for pass rushers. Even Peyton Manning knows how to get out the way! When is Rex going to start recognizing blitzing defenses? Cedric Benson is not the first good running back to suffer from fumbling. How did Tiki Barber cure it? The Bears need long-term solutions.
You know, it's kind of interesting. Angelo could not find a quality quarterback when he was the GM of the Buccaneers. He leaves, they bring in Gruden and Brad Johnson (Brad Johnson!!?!?!) and they win a Super Bowl.
Angelo then lands in Chicago, where it once again appears that he can't draft or develop a quarterback.
Let's see if lightening can strike twice.
Get rid of Angelo so we can win the Super Bowl!!
Ok...let's put a stop to the, "It's everyone's fault, not just Rex's" posts right now:
- If Rex had any ability to escape pressure or move around the pocket, his linemen would block better. As a lineman, why should I give that extra effort to hold my block 1/2 a second longer if the QB will just fall backwards for a sack anyways?
- If Rex had the ability to throw a consistently accurate pass, as a receiver, I would have an incentive to run accurate routes. Why should I if after a year and a half, I have run accurate routes and Rex misses me most of the time, or throws it to the other team
- If Rex had the ability to throw downfield without throwing critical picks, the opposing linebackers would have to drop deeper and the running backs would have more open space to run. As it is, the running backs have no room and have to fight for inches - which leads to more fumbles
- If Rex had the ability to either strike fear into opposing defenses with quick strike points or the ability to grind out long drives with accurate passes, the Bears defense could either pin their ears back when they have a big lead, or get plenty of rest - due to Grossman's inability to CONSISTENTLY do either, the Bears defense has to play their guts out - which leads to more injuries
Bottom line: the Bears are playing badly as a team because their quarterback cannot consistently produce, their coaches insist on playing him regardless of that fact, and they see no reason to give 100% effort when their efforts consistently go un-rewarded.
Grossman just isn't good enough. I realized that last year after the Miami game. The players now know that if either Griese or Orton had taken over then (when they should have), they would likely being wearing rings right now - and would be competitive again this year.
Angelo/Lovie have ruined this team to the point that the Bears players don't believe in their quarterback (with reason), their coaches (with reason), their management (with reason) - and now they are starting to not believe in themselves. What a shame and what a waste of a fine football team.
I finally decided to put my two cents in after giving up on the Bears in the 4th quarter last night. To remedy the rest of the season, I believe that the final solution to the crab that was being thrown out on the football field by the Bears last night, is to replace Grossman with Kyle Orton, who has proven in the pass to be a reliable quarterback. He was put in tough situations and responded with wins. Griese is a has been and will be only average at his best.
The season is not over yet, but drastic changes have to be done immediately. As one fan put it very clearly in one of the comments, the goal of the entire organization should be, to win every game. If something or someone does not work, change it.
The entire Offense is at fault??? What on earth do you expect when grossman keeps playing the way he insists on playing? He is supposed to be the L E A D E R afterall. I'm surprised there weren't all the fumbles and dropped passes last year.
Think about it for awhile. Several anonymous players have mentioned that they are not allowed to critcicize 'other' players, under threat of sitting on the bench, or getting traded. What would any of you do to get rid of the thorn in your side? Can't say as I blame any players who have taken matters into their own hands. It takes a lot of work to get to a SB and see it blown by the 'thorn'.
Sorry but it just doesn't make any sense that the line suddenly forgot how to block and the Receivers are treating the football like a hot potato. All of them????
This whole thing does not make sense. Despite what some of you think, Griese has been a Starter most of time in the NFL, up until he came to Chicago, except for his Rookie season under John Elway.
He lost his last job due to injury, after going 5-1. He is 32. that is not old for a QB. He is still the 17th Rated QB in the NFL.
So here are some comparisons.
Griese had started 24 games as of his final game of 2000
Grossman had started 24 games as of his final game of 2006
Games with a rating under 50:
Griese had 1(ONE) in his 1st 24 games (Career total of 3) (THREE)
Grossman had 8 (EIGHT) in his first 24 games.
They switched on 300 yard games) :)
Griese had 8 (EIGHT) in his first 24 games.
Grossman had 1 (ONE) in his first 24 games.
Yards:
Griese had 5,720 in his first 24 games.
Grossman had 4,496. 1,224 less yards than Griese.
Finally, Griese has beat some pretty good Defenses over the years. Here is one example.
Passing CP/AT YDS TD INT
B. Griese 15/23 163 1 0 (2nd game as a Starter with Bucs)
Rushing ATT YDS TD LG
M. Pittman 23 109 1 19
M. Alstott 7 29 0 14
J. White 4 5 0 4
B. Griese 2 -1 0 0
M. Clayton 1 -4 0 -4
Receiving REC YDS TD LG
M. Clayton 6 62 1 14 (ROOKIE)
M. Pittman 2 55 0 46
J. Jurevicius 2 21 0 13 (1st game as starter in over a year)
T. Brown 1 13 0 13 (Dropped more passes than he caught)
M. Alstott 2 8 0 5
W. Heller 1 3 0 3
J. White 1 1 0 1
Fumbles FUM LOST REC YDS
M. Alstott 1 1 0 0
M. Pittman 1 1 0 0
Tampa Bay 19 - Chicago 7.
I know that Lovie and Angelo know all this and a great deal more, so why stick with wrecks? Does anyone know what the incentives are in Griese's contract? Would the Bears be so cheap that they would rather lose games than give Griese more money?
I wonder how long it's going to take before we have a war between the defense when they have a good performance and the offense as they continue to be punchless, making a great defensive effort go to naught. I hope Smith will stop being so damn stubborn and egotistical and at least try a change at QB before that happens. Too often coaches feel they have to prove a choice they made was right no matter how many games they lose. Hey, Notre Damn Charley finally came to the conclusion that his 800 page, NFL playbook wasn't going to work with this years team and stripped it down, can Smith be more stubborn than Charlie?
I've always thought Grossman's problem was part apathy. He plays, no matter how bad he plays, making him never accountable, then makes comments such as "I don't worry about what I can't control", indicating that if he was benched, so be it, any change is out of his hands. Well Rex, you put in a good game and keep your job, you're the only one with the control. I'm reminded of a short kid, with just one eye that worked, playing QB for the Bears 20 years ago. He didn't have the physical tools Grossman has been blessed with but mentally he had everything Grossman seems to lack. He cared, he willed the team to win, and never quit. Rex doesn't care, a loss is no big thing, a F* up performance is no reason to worry. IMHO, if he cashes a paycheck he's committing grand larceny. Can this kid honestly say to himself he earned it? Bench him and he'll never start for anyone ever again, and we can all be fortunate because of that.
fire rex , fire ced, fire lovie, fire angelo
It's not JUST Rex... the O line has to be one of the oldest in the NFL... teams are figuring out the blocking schemes to plug lanes on runs and rush to a spot on pass plays. They are also figuring out the D schemes and how to beat the Bears either under or over Urlacher, because the D line and the other backers are way too anxious to overrun whomever has the ball. Hey... why not pass to Hester on a middle screen and let him work through their D? Oh... that's right... Rex throws interceptions on middles screens too!
To Mark T above and sports radio callers- the defense did not "give up 34 points" as obviously you didnt see the game Rex had an int returned for a touchdown and other points were scored directly from turnovers like the field goal after Bensons fumble
We have two perennial Pro-Bowlers on the offensive line and now everyone is saying the line stinks, the receivers stink, defense stinks, even Devon Hester for bobbling the ball, not a turnover by the way- anything to avoid the obvious fact that we have a far below average QB who could not start for any other team and a bumbling offensive coordinator who has failed at every position he has
Wake up people- the Bears have a strong receiving core -the QB just cant get them the ball, he panics, has no poise or football savvy- it does not matter what he did as a sophomore at Florida 7 years ago, plus he is not a "kid" he has been in the league for 5 years!
Well it obvious everyone sees what is going on. Yes Grossman needs to go to the bench. But the problem with the Bears is more than that. Let's start by having the McCaskeys sell the team, (maybe to Mark Cuban) to someone who's willing to spend the money on free agents and trades to improve the team after a trip to the Super Bowl. Get a owner who wants to but the best product on the field for the fans, not just get a winning season and thinks don't worry the fans will keep coming back. What a way to treat a loyal fan base. Next, get rid of Angelo and all the personnel he calls scouts. Any sensible person could see that Rex was a product of the Steve Spurier system in college (not one of his QBs has suceeded at the pro level) just chunking the ball to an open spot and let a better athlete take over. And he was draft in the 1st round?? How is that?! Think about it, the Pats could draft Brady in the 6th round and Dallas signs Romo as a FA and we draft a too short, small handed, bad mechanics QB in the first round....WTF!!!! What is our scouting department seeing??!! Then if we're a running team, let's get a running back who isn't scared to go into line (not tippy toes Benson) and exploded with some power. Giving up TJ with a swamp of picks, I know the Jets are laughing because we got robbed. Next get and OC who wants to be aggressive and creative on offense, you Hester, he could be a real threat. Also if Lovie isn't willing to make the changes that have to be made, i.e. pulling a QB, then get rid of him too. No one can expect a defense to be on the field for over 60 percent of the game and keep the game in reach.
Keith - Are you really saying that everyone else is playing poorly because Rex is playing bad? They're playing down to him? First, I think Berrian's drops were early in the game...before Rex's play went south. Second, if that's true, then they're all mental midgets and should be replaced. Rex certainly isn't helping matters, but you can't honestly blame him for everything. I just don't see Orton or Griese as a step up. Obviously, the offense as a group is going to get better (no matter who runs it). I know they're different, but keep in mind that Peyton Manning had 28 picks his first year. Rex had 20. And why is there no criticism whatsoever of the running game? Since when are the Bears a passing team that relies on a second year QB for its offensive production?
I'm starting to feel bad for Brian Urlacher and all the other guys on the team. Lovie's gonna have to realize hopefully sooner rather than later that he owes it to them to make a change.
The last great Bears quarterback was Sid LUCKman. Our current loser du juor is named Rex GROSSman. Coincidence? I think not.
Orton..QB
AP...RB
Berrian/Bradley...WR's
Olsen/Dez...TE's
Hester... Rashied Davis...Garret Wolfe....work em in...often
Hit.....your Team wouldnt beat USC
Rex is not the whole problem, bad play calls, terrible blocking, terrible routes, and way to many drops. Rex has not made the progressions necessary to play at this high caliber level but Griese and orton are not the answer. Those of you who keep calling for either one of those two need to understand that 2 super bowl caliber coaches fired him. Orton is the answer??? Only if there is an open bar at Durkins (way to write your ticket out of town jerk!) Ced is like the Tin Man...no heart what so ever. Angelo looks like a jerk also great moves knowing Brown cant finish a season and Ced has no heart. Should have left him in Austin 4 years ago. I would like to see AP start next week, they both fumble at least AP runs with passion and cares. Angelo you suck!!!
Grossman should not be starting for the Bears..I said it last year through the whole season and now this. Orton was replaced because he could not throw the deep ball and was told to manage the game. Does the offense look the same as when Orton was the QB? Looks to me that Turner does not have confidence in Grossman. His offense has been simplified. Benson will be a better than average back but you need to throw the long ball to free up the running lanes. Lets not forgt that he has only started 3/4 games in his career. Lets give him a chance to prove himself. Lovie has said that there will be changes...look for Benson to be benched. Lovie needs a scapegoat and Benson is the man. The sad thing about all that is happening is that you can see the players do not believe in Grossman...both offense and defense. Make the change and salvage the season.
Let not forget it's only the third game of the season. That's the problem with all you cry babies that call yourself bear fans. When the wins are coming, Rex and the bears are the best thing since sliced bread. They drop a couple and now they should be playing in Canada. Shut up and support the bears.
Rex is part of the problem, but does not engulf it. The play calling is just horrible. Pound the ball with Benson, throw to the tight ends, it is really not that difficult to fathom. Every once in a blue moon, throw it deep to keep the defense honest. And for the sake of sanity, use Rex in the shotgun every single play, he appears more comfortable.
All this talk about this game being a total team effort loss is unrealistic. I'm a firm believer that ONE play can change the whole outcome of a game, from beginning to end.
Enter, Ron Turner. On second down right before the Bears field goal, after watching the defensive line stack the box for the umteenth time in a row, two straight passes to the end zone(shoulda been three) was a darn good answer. Instead, Ronnie Boy runs into the mountain again, with no creativity or for that matter a smart logistical decision to throw over a mountain instead of consistently running into it.
That, coupled with the realization after watching the game again on Monday that in the fourth quarter the Dallas 'D' was beating our receivers to the spot, doesn't bode well for the play calling. Sure looked a lot like the desperation plays from last years Super Bowl to a 'T'.
Special teams didn't play to par, but Dallas' speed may have played a part, and the Bears 'D' played as well as they could in the first half. A few Romo scrambles to open up receivers, along with our inept offense was the GLARING difference in the second half. On one third and long play with the score tied and Dallas inside their own fifteen, Romo scrambles just enough to avoid a sack, throw for a first down and then lead his team down field for the lead score. Could have been excellent field position for the Bears, and who knows what may have followed.
But what a difference does a quarterback make.
What a difference does ONE play make.
We need to correct this Q.B. and offensive play calling situation in a hurry because the domino effect is destroying our team fast. Defensive players are going to have a better chance of injury the more time they spend on the field, especially late in the game of an offense-can't-do-jack-again debacle. Your body just doesn't have the same intensity.
Lovie, your'e hurting your 'D' more than you'll ever know. Or do you know and are just waiting for a few more starters to be lost due to an overabundance of time on the field.
Even Dilfer gave his 'D' a rest.
What's all the talk about Griese? Has everyone forgotten that we have a solid/steady/consistant quarterback in Orton?
JohnF | September 24, 2007 05:45 PM - Outstanding Post!
It all begins with that Quarterback. He is the leader, and when he is playing well - its just hilarious how all of a sudden the Bears look invincible. Passing opens up the running game/offense and that just makes everyone else function/flow. Defense gets rested and avoids injuries, and even Ron Turner gets to put in some of his plays and rotate in our weapons. Bears are dead in the water without a QB.
Enough already! All of you football experts who know so much, all you can say is get rid of Rex. Okay Rex isn't Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but how many are and how many has Chicago had? The New Orleans hero,Drew Brees, beats Rex with 7 interceptions and 1 TD. Jay Cutler is 3/4. Are you saying that Matt Hasselback, J. Losman and Alex Smith are better?? I rather doubt it. I've got the solution, let's put Kyle Orton in.
If you want to cut some people how about these useless characters.
Let's start with the offensive Coord. Ron "the brother of Norv" Turner (the Sutter brothers come to mind) Tell me, if the only pass plays the opposing QB (Rex in this case) throws are out patterns, how long before you'd figure it out? Last year on either the first or second play the Bears had the ball, it was a deep bomb down the middle to Berrian or someone. How many of those have you seen this year? Zilch.
Rex is from Florida. Florida QB's are notoriously known for throwing down field. This coord takes Rex's strength and shelves it in favor of making him play to his weakness. We have the worse play calling in the NFL. Do you think Rex calls his own plays? The acorn falls close to the tree, just look at what Norv has done to the Chargers.
Let's cut the QB coach next. If we had one I'd comment. QB's are on their own in this town.
You can get rid of our Defensive coord while you're at it. He obviously hasn't noticed NFL offenses are not running this year but are passing like there is no tomorrow. Our run defense sucks against the passing game. No matter how many guys we sent at Romo, they were picked up. No stunts, no different blitz packages ala, Buddy Ryan, nothing just straight ahead charges.
I know, Rex sucks because he doesn't give the defense a rest. Well, how about the defense stopping the other teams offense the first or second series? Rex didn't cause the defense to be pass challenged.
So if you want to cut some people, great, cut the people who are the source of our demise. After you get through them then you can cut Rex or anyone else you want to cut. It's so easy to look at only the QB as the cause of our failures. I thought Chicago fans were smart and knowledgable, not prone to emotional bandwagon jumping. Let's look at the bigger picture. I'm not going to sit here and say Rex hasn't stunk up the place (thank God we don't play in a dome)but come on Bear fans he is not the total reason. Things aren't going to be better getting rid of RG
Oh yeah, Marty Schottenheimer is still available.
Who's taller Orton or Greise?
Roman responds: Orton's 6-4, one inch taller than Griese.
Roman, the problem with Rex even dating back to his days at Florida is that he's a single-vision QB. From the moment he snaps the ball his eyes are locked on the one guy he plans to throw the ball to it. Rarely does he even see other guys open.
This was clear in the game against the Cowboys & it became obvious that the DB's for them began to focus on where Rex was looking.
Good Rex was a mirage. He had not played enough in the NFL prior to last season for team's to get a read on him. He's always had a strong arm so early on he caught some teams by surprised. He was helped by the versatility of Jones in the backfield as well.
As the season wore on teams were able to get a read on him & word got around that you just have to watch his eyes to know where the ball is going. After that Good Rex faded & all we had left was a single-vision QB and the rest of the league knew it.
I don't think it's something you can easily fix. The best QB's in the league can see the whole field and track their recievers in the first 2 secs from the ball being snapped. Maybe it's an instinctual behavior for some and a disciplined one for other's. Whatever it is Grossman doesn't have it & I don't think he's capable of disciplining himself enough to develop it.
I'd rather have a weaker arm QB that can see the whole field in that 2 sec window than a strong arm guy who can't. I don't know if Greise, Orton, or Leak is that guy but I can't imagine them being any worse at it than Rex is.
I have high hopes on Chris Leak because of what he faced while at Florida. Those were some of the toughest defenses in college football & no matter the score, the turnovers, or the situation he remained in control. His confidence never seemed to waiver & he got the job done.
probably... unfortunately... I'm still not ready to completely give up on Rex, but the screams from the peanut gallery and the pressure are probably too big now for him to stay.
I still think he can develop (he won't be Brett Favre or even Tono Romo) but he's not getting any help. AT ALL.
From no one. btw.. anyone see Drew Brees' stats year to date? how about Matt Leinart's
As a Rex fan I was very disappointed by that Dallas game but he's not getting any help. Berrian dropped what... 3 balls including a possible TD? Also working against him is being compared to Romo, who's about to become a star, amazing footwork, movement and in the pocket and field vision, all major problems for Rex. But then Romo has Owens to always look for when in trouble. Who can Rex rely on? (and Jason Garret has proven to be twice the play caller Ron Turner is)
also.
Cedric Benson blows. It's that simple. He has the shiftiness of an elephant in a room, yet he's no Earl Cambpbell and the Bears offensive line isn't like the Emmitt Smith Cowboy lines.
The Bears don't have an offensive identity. Lovie says they are a running team, but they're not because they cannot run effectively with Benson. Last year it started out slowly, but Rex was able to sling the ball deep to Berrian and surprise people... nobody was gameplanning for the likes of Berrian.
and btw.. on the defensive side of the ball.
Is it just me or is Adam Archuleta regularly getting abused, especially in pass coverage by opposing TE's? maybe Wash knew something after all when it released him? Maybe he's simply not fast and athletic enough - after all, he is white, isn't he (sorry for being politically incorrect but the truth is what it is, how many white boys other than John Lynch play in NFL secondaries?

Yes. He is done in Chicago. He can not lead this team. He will most likely end up on Green Bay, groomed by Bret, killing the Bears for the next 10 years but he is done in Chicago.
Ole Rex proved Sunday night, in front of everyone, that he does not have the balls to be an NFL QB right now. Worst of all, he has lost that cocky confidence look he had in his eyes last year when he was sucking up the place. The look that let us trust him in his bad times is gone. He just looks scared now. I am afraid the days of Rex getting up for the big games are over.
Nice to be in Chicago this weekend. Greatest fans in the world.
BEAR DOWN!
Culzie...whattaya mean my team "couldn't beat USC?"....ok then.. LSU is gonna win the Superbowl
I'm glad to see this thread is leaning towards Orton...
Prediction. Now the Rex the clown is gone, all of a sudden the offense will be able to sustain more than one offensive drive per game. All of a sudden, the passing game will actually start 2 produce which will help Benson get some yards.
I told u guys 5 years ago the Rex was NOT an NFL qb. This move is 5 years 2 late but better late than never.
P.S. Bring back Leak!
MG out of nowhere!!!
Hey Navarro, I agree! This kid looked like a QB to me. I actually was at the preseason game he played in. He showed poise, elusiveness and a nice touch. He moved the chains and that is something we could work with. Once we go to Orton, its time to think future.
But since we have a very good defense, Griese is our best option to get the job done now. Many posters believe Griese is not the answer, but a band-aide. If he is not the Bears need to bring in a bonefide starter! Don't wait until he bombs out. Don't hope that Grossman will get better on the bench. Go and get what you need - and cut Rex! Leftwich would have been a good choice. He could do no worse than Grossman. There has got to be someone out there now. Any ideas?
Roman this might be a good idea for the next blog? Or the Bulls. (please, no more Vick or Bonds)
I can't believe some of you are still defending Rex. I'm not a Turner fan but to blame all of Rex's turnovers on Turner's play-calling is utterly absurd.
Rex has killed the Bears this year. He's not just been bad he's been treasonous! The worst time to throw an interception or fumble the football is after a scoring drive by your opposition. Rex has become notorious for doing this & to be honest the same can be said of Benson albeit to a lesser degree.
That is all Rex & it's not going to suddenly change with a new team.
