Cubs clinch!

| | Comments (32)

It was June 25 when I wrote in this space that the Cubs are a Team of Destiny. They took a step toward validating that Friday.

This is why Carlos Zambrano got the huge contract extension and why Alfonso Soriano landed the mega-deal.They're big-time players who are being paid to step up at the big moments. Zambrano won twice this week and Soriano set the table with another leadoff home run.

Both guys figured into beating down a beaten down Cincinnati team Friday while the beatable Brewers continued to lose.

It doesn't matter how bad the Cubs have been lately. They're in, and that's all that matters.

wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

GO CUBS GO!! WOO HOO, we are so excited to watch the Cubs in the playoffs! Time for 99 years to come to an end!

Helllllls yeah!

It's great to see those guys partying in the clubhouse. Now let's win the NLDS and go from there!

GO CUBS!!

Go CUBBIES!!!

just like we ALL said they would ;)

"It doesn't matter how bad the Cubs have been lately".
"The Cubs backed into the playoffs".
Somebody has to explain this to me. The Cubs were 11-5 over the last two weeks. How is that "backing in"? How is a team that plays .687 ball the last two weeks, backing into the playoffs?

Congrats to the Loveable "Losers"! Finally, a Rare Division Title.
Always remember that the St. Louis Cardinals have won 10 World Championships, since the Cubs won on in 1908.

Loyal Cardinal's Fan

(Go Cubs in '07!)

Even though Lou relied a lot on the veterans down the stretch, enough youngsters made key contributions to ensure that this team will be competitive for the next few years.

Good job, Hendry and Piniella.

11 more wins to go.

It was Windy here today in Utah as all of Cub Nation breathed a sigh of relief! So Chicago lift your Old Style's high lets toast these Boy's of Summer and Pray that they become Men of the Fall and bring that trophy to the North Side!!! Go CUBS Go!

Man, Roman, call me crazy for saying this, but I got more faith in the Cubs now than I do in the Bears. Never thought I'd see the day

You are absolutely right Roman! This is why you spend the money. Cubs have a good team, but not a great one. But they have just enough to get them over the top if the horses do what they are capable of. They have an uncanny mix of veterans and youth and just enough pitching. And they have a great leader in Lou. I like Dusty, but he was never given the horses and he does not have the personality to lead a Chicago Team. Lou is a lot like Ozzie, but without the hotsauce. Cubs will be competitive if they stay on this route. Skip all of that hollywood northside stuff - field a baseball team, and that will do more for you than all the gimmicks in advertising. Cubs one-upped the Whitesox this year, and caused them to take a long hard look in the mirror. I believe the 05-06 Sox did the Cubs that same favor. Now its Kenny's turn! This is good for Chicago - because the fans win and have something to watch in October!

If the Cubs won it all this year, it wouldn't surprise me one bit. I personally think they need another pitcher to compliment Zambrano - but they have enough to get it done. Wow! I don't remember a time in Chicago when all of the teams were this good. Every team we have are a few players away from winning it ALL! I hope Paxson is watching!

CUBS COMING TO THE DESERT?!?!?!?

What can i say,the CUBS are in the playoffs!!!hopefully they can make it all the way.I don't think my HEART can take being broken anymore....1984..1989..2001..2003.If the cubs were to win it all,I would die a verry happy man and finally be able to forgive STEVE GARVEY.GO CUBS 07!!!!!!!!

Roman not until I can go to MLB.com Shop and order my Cubs 2007 World Champions ball cap will I say they are a team of destiny. Right now they are a legitimate contender capable of winning it all IF they remain focused. I would love nothing better than to see the Cubs breeze through the post-season in record fashion but history says the if they do win it all most Cub Fans won't have any finger nails left and others will need Grecian formula to cover the grey. Only one thing left to say now.............
GOOOOOOOOOOO CUBBIESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

Cubs won division & it wasn't easy. Now they must play like contenders every game in playoffs. The bad base running, throws & poor bunting must stop. Id leave Kendall off roster & put Blanco on. Kendall has done little for Cubs right & that can be true on Monroe too.Soto should start each playoff game for sure.In spite of Kendall ,Monroe & a few miscues by others Cubs won division!Brewers pretty much beat themselves in final weeks I'm sure Cubs & others in division will be contending with Brewers in years to come.I'm 60 & never seen Cubs in a world series. We all can think of many who have come & gone without witnessing that .This Cub team can make history. Lets see if they are man enough to do it?

Good post Rick...but come on..its not like anyone in here ever uses FACTS!!

Roman responds: FACT: The Cubs got swept by the worst team in the East last week.

Id like to see a breakdown on the TOTAL TEAM PLAYOFF EXPERIANCE NOW vs. in 2003.

I would bet that there is like 2000% more playoff experiance now than then.

Romy, dont you have a stat boy at your disposal?

Hey Rick, go back to St. Louis with your sour grapes and put your striped shirt and plaid pants back on. The Cardinals can only look up to the 2007 National League Central Division Champions, the Chicago Cubs.

Well they've done it! -- and sure made it interesting for us, right? I hope the big money guys continue to step up. And the playoffs always have some unlikely heroes (e.g. David Eckstein as World Series MVP), so it'll be fun to see who else might step up.

In any case, I'm happy they're playing in October. Where they go from here...coin toss anybody? Early first-round exit or World Series? Either seems bizarrely plausible with this team.

Thanks Cubbies for clinching last night. Finally I can wake up on Saturday and concentrate on some college football.

Now I can watch your Boilermakers give ND the worst beating in 40 years. Its only 20 points or something.

Watch the ole Irish beat SC this year when it doesn't matter.

2 in, 2 to go
Because of Friday night's results, the Diamondbacks and Cubs have qualified for the National League playoffs. Arizona is also one win away from clinching the NL West and the top seed in the NL playoffs.

The Cubs are the NL Central champions. The Diamondbacks can do no worse than win the wild card, and their magic number to clinch the NL West is 1. One win in their final two games would give them 91 wins, and only San Diego could match that total. In that case, both teams would make the playoffs, and the Diamondbacks would be division champions based on winning the season series.

The Padres, Rockies, Phillies and Mets are competing for the final two spots.

The Phillies have a one-game lead over the Mets in the NL East.

The Padres are a game behind in the NL West and two games ahead of the Mets and Rockies for the wild card
www.espn.com

I GOT 4 Tix to games 1 - 2!!!

And you were worried Roman!.....GO CUBBIES!

P.S. The 2007 Mets choke is making the '69 Cubs choke look like a minor slip-up....payback is a bitch, after 38 years....couldn't happen to a better organization....

"I knew it all along," she said with a smile and crossed fingers.
But still........WHEW!!!!!!!
By the way, the division-championship shirts and hats are really cool!

I have always been a White Sox fan and was in Chicago when the Sox went to the world seris and made history for the people of this baseball generation in 2005. How ironic its going to be that I will be in Chicago once again and now the Cubs are in the playoffs. I feel history can be made once again. I often ponder on what the 69 Cubs could have been had they not been over-taken by the NY Mets. Although I was a die hard Sox fan I loved Jack Brickhouse the most colorful announcer baseball as ever seen. I thought the 69 Cubs were the best team in the league besides the Baltimore Oriolies at that time! The classic Hey Hey was the trade mark after a Cub homer. I never seen Jack more colorful as he enjoyed the Cubs success of that year. I wish Jack could be here to see the Cubs now! But I am sure he is saying Hey hey from up above or where ever he is! GO CUBBIES AND THE CITY OF CHICAGO!

It doesn't matter how bad the Cubs have been lately. They're in, and that's all that matters.

Okay Roman, I will let you slide by with this statement, but as a Chicago White Sox fan, I cannot congratulate you and your team just yet. If (and that is a mighty BIG IF) the Cubbies bring the title home is when you will get a salute from me friend.

Oh yeah, if you win it all, Cub Fans must treat White Sox Fans to Goat meat hoagies. Deal? That is the only way I will come to that part of town WITHOUT a White Sox Championship cap on, asking "WHAT THE HECK TOOK YOU GUYS SSSSSSSSSSOOOOOO LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

Hey Keith Southside, you NOT a turncoat or closet Cubbie Fan are you? You do not sound like a Die Hard White Sox Fan! What happen, too much drama about the Bears shorted your circuits and you forgot where you live? Just teasing!

hmmmm...something is pretty suspicious about the Reds rollingover here...even though the Cubs shut out the Reds two previous times before this series.....something is going to happen with the Cubs and Red's this offseason........not with the Marlins though...obviously. Now,I will think about Trevor Hoffman's blown save today.......................................hmmmmmmmm.....

Great cubs won division! The question is will this team be the one to get to world series? The cubs known for balls going through legs at crucial times or blaming a fan for its losses in playoffs. One tip would be for Lou, don't play Kendall. Jason has done little to help cubs & is a weak link when he does play.Monroe another veteran who has done little. No excuses especially for high paid vets like Kendall or Monroe to play so poorly.Dempster another cub I wouldn't want to see in game with it on the line. Certain players like the above three are almost guaranteed to choke. Cubs need to play guys who are playing good baseball & surprise some of us doubters.

"It was June 25 when I wrote in this space that the Cubs are a Team of Destiny. They took a step toward validating that Friday."

Quit baiting me with that phrase, Roman.

Alternative explanation for this situation: They're in the playoffs, along with 7 other teams.

6 of which have a better chance at winning the World Series.

By default, we're looking at 7, maybe 8 "Teams of Destiny" here.

Which of these Destiny-composed Teams of Destiny consisting of Destiny is the most Destinious?

You guessed it: the Chicago "Destiny" Cubs.

OK...IM OFFERING TO HOLD UP A SIGN WITH THE BEST PHRASE ON IT AT THE AZ GAMES.

WHAT SHOULD IT SAY??

Ozzie Guillen was right. Fun is winning. Winning is fun!

Fact, the Cubs WON the division!

what happen to the Kubbies?
