Benson soft? Rex a mental midget?

If the Bears needed more motivation for the Kansas City Chiefs - other than the fact they don't want to start off 0-2 - the fuel was supplied by the San Diego Chargers http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/554429,bear091207.article.

Shaun Phillips said Cedric Benson is soft, which makes him sounds like most Bears fans these days. Benson angrily denied it, and essentially challenged Phillips.

Meanwhile, Chargers LB Matt Wilhelm said Ron Rivera intimated Rex Grossman is a "mental midget," and that it was easy to get inside of his head. Rivera denied it http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/555034,091207Rex.article. Even if Rivera didn't say it, one of his players inferred that to be the meaning. And it's somewhat telling.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a lot of talk coming from a team that underachieved in the playoffs last season. But the fact is, both Bears players are facing those perceptions. They'll have a chance Sunday to make their own statements.

It's been one freaking game. Enough already.

VERY funny Hitman. I got a chuckle when I read earlier what was implied about Ced/Rex. It's funny how the people "in the know" knows exactly what's going on with players and the fans who think they know it all doesn't know. I'm giving Rex a pass because I knew he had a mental thing when it comes to playing and I already said that Ced didn't have any heart and now his opponents are coming out and saying it. Who knows: before the season is over they will play beyond what people are expecting them to. I'm already calling them "CED and Done".

Hey hitman, no one can understand your rambling! Your mindless posts just prove to everyone your lack of understanding about the Bears and football in general.

Rex and Benson are very talented football players who excelled at big time powerhouse college programs. They are the best player at their position on this Bears' team. They are just scratching the surface of their potentials.

Compare Peyton Manning's numbers to Rex's in their first full season as a starter and you'll find that they are very similar. Benson had a better yard per carry average last year than Thomas Jones and generally looked quicker and more powerful running the ball than Jones.

It's not their fault that they're playing behind an old, slow, and weak offensive line and for an awful offensive coordinator in Ron Turner.

As for Phillips, he should think first before opening his mouth. Hey Phillips, why don't you ask your ex-teammate Junior Seau how soft Benson is? Seau tried to tackle Benson last year and got a broken arm to show for. Now, how many running backs can break a hall of fame linebacker's arm running the ball? No, Benson is not soft...Phillips' brain is!

As for Ron Rivera...He's one of the main reasons why we lost the superbowl. His defensive scheme and game planning was terrible. He couldn't make adjustments to the Colts' running game. He is the defensive version of Ron Turner: nonaggressive, unimaginative, unintelligent, and gutless. Good Ridden!

Rexy a mental midget? Maybe. He is a Gator. I always wondered if that long pause with the sideways look after each question from the media was careful thinking by Rex, or just blank searching. Its hard to tell. You get the same reaction asking someone a question after they have just smoked several bong hits too. You tell me Roman, your there, it could just be my High Def playing tricks on me.

It is probably pretty easy to get into that dudes head. I am sure it is part of every Defensive Coordinators playbook when they play the Bears. I think you can get in there by saying boo right before the snap; he gets scared and drops the ball usually when you do that.

GO BEARS!!!

Well...if that doesnt piss you off as a bears fan, what would. I mean, at the end of the day, you still need to support your boys, you dont serve them up to the wolves or the enemy.

Hitman...who's been hitting you man? Because your rhymes don't make sense and your logic trips on its own feet. Rex is one of the toughest SOBs around after what he has been through and Ced is a brusing runner who needs to be more productive, but he is certainly not soft. You are the only soft one here talking trash like Phillips. Maybe you should move to San Diego where you can continue your courageous trash talk. Rex is 10 times the man you are.

Rex is a waste of time period. I wish we had any other playoff starting QB than Rex.

I can't argue with what was said about Grossman and Benson until they become contenders and not pretenders.

Benson soft? Did u see him on draft day? YES
Rex a mental midget? He doesn't have the stones to rip back on Rivera. YES

I think your last statement made the most sense. They have the nerve to call someone else soft, when New England came there last season and handed it to them(2001 Bears-Eagles replay).

When you can win a home playoff game against a team you are expected to beat, then talk, otherwise enjoy the victory and just shut up.

btw, I do believe Rivera said that comment, and I beieve most coaches believe that about Grossman "The Bears were who we thought they were...", the dumb player just threw his coach under the bus. I also believe it is true, but now he gets the chance to redeem himself. Rivera could have said the same comment about Rivers, too.

We already know Benson is a flake, an insecure young man trying to make his way in football, but does that mean he and Grossman are bad football players, no. They have issues, and now they must work harder to stay on the SB campaign.

Contrary to what any poster thinks, football is mainly about the desire to win, the body takes a beating all the time. It's just how bad do you want it, and Rex and Ced will realize how bad the others want it and we will see if they choose to sacrifice to play at that level.

I just want to see if the two biggest question marks (to most people) on the team can overcome all of the haters, and do what they are supposed to do. Just because I back them does not mean I do not see the truth, it means I will give them a chance to grow and develop as all players have to.

Every other team in the league has or had the same problems with their quarterback and/or running back.

Hitman, generally I love your posts, but enough already with the song, 'kay? It was a little bit funny the first 10 times you posted it. Now its just sad. Your original thoughts are way more interesting and witty than this song.

How'd your team do this week? I won in both my leagues, but don't tell Culzie. All that trash-talking - he's probably a little sore that my QB outscored his QB by 15 pts. And that Ced only had 3, same as Reggie Bush.

I don't believe Benson is soft. I think he has the potential to wear down defenses with his size. The Bears just don't give him enough carries and don't play-action pass off his runs (and, you know, throw to the tight end -- a part of the West Coast offense that R. Turner seems to have forgotten). Would love to see the Bears give Benson 20-25 carries in each of the next few games. If he doesn't produce, then go with Peterson. Until then, I don't think he's had an adequate oppty to show what he can do.

Regarding the Rex-ster. Hmmmmmm. Was Tommie Harris' comment to Donovan McNabb more telling than we thought? While the offense believes in all things Rex, is the defense of another mind? It wouldn't be the first time a strong defense has begun to wonder about their unproductive teammates on the offensive side of the ball. Again, let's give the offense a few more games to see if it can get untracked and for the playmakers to start making plays. But Harris' comment could loom large if the Rex-ster turns into a T-Rex-ster (ie, large, slow moving animal with an extremely small brain, limited field of vision and short, almost useless arms).

That said, I'm betting the offense will get untracked if:

Benson gets 20-25 carries
Bears throw to their tight ends (maybe off a play-action pass!?!?!?!)
Wolfe gets into the game
Rex throws downfield and tells his receivers to go get the ball
Bears defense blitzes non-stop

This is a recipe that will ring up a "W."

I love the Hitman backlash....

JB....you are soooo wrong....It wasnt even a little bit funny the first time. Come on, if your gonna make a rhyme up, it should at least rhyme right?

The same people who want to throw out Rex and Ced are the sames ones who want to hand Iraq over to the Iranians.

I think Benson is soft. One good hit on him and he will crumble. I remember in the Superbowl game, Bob Sanders came in and Benson must not have seen him coming (*even though he ran straight at him) and just put a devistating lick on him, causing Benson to fumble. We was so rattled by that hit that he didn't come back in the game. Announcers said he was hurt, but I believe he was rattled. As far as Rex...I still believe his height, or lack there of, is the real problem.

"But the fact is, both Bears players are facing those perceptions"....Roman

It's not a "perception", it's reality. Benson got manhandled by an above average (not great, as some are saying) defense last Sunday. After that first hit on Grossman he overthrew receivers and missed several additional blitzes - he checked out just like he has before. Finally, someone other than me has spoken the truth. The Bears are going nowhere with Benson and Grossman. I have always felt that way about Grossman, and unfortunately I believed in Benson until he let me down in the Superbowl and last Sunday. I have seen enough from him - I'll take the Thomas Jones cutbacks any day.

I'll say this one last time - IT'S NOT TURNER'S FAULT. You can't throw downfield when the quarterback doesn't recognize blitzes. The more you "open up the offense" the more picks and fumbles you get from Grossman. If you want downfield throws, sight reads, blitz awareness, and all of the other things you get from an average NFL quarterback, then play Griese or Orton.

The prevailing wisdom here seems to be, lets wait until we're 0 and 8 and then we'll try something different. There's a reason the Bears lost the Superbowl last year. Major changes needed to be made at the quarterback, safety, wide receiver and offensive line positions and the Bears answer was, "Let's just try again with the same guys, minus our best running back".....how pathetic.

Most of the other contending teams in the NFC (as well as in the NFC North) have improved since last year. The Bears have regressed. That is why I was telling everyone after the Superbowl what a huge wasted opportunity it was and all I heard back was, "Don't worry, Grossman will be better next year" or "This is better than losing".....

Pete is right on: "It's one freakin'game." Sportswriters and reporters distort commentary all the time in order to create controversy ( which they confuse with intelligent discourse and discussion )because many lack the ability to actually analyze. Look at the ESPN dolts who believe they are astute but mostly talk about M.Vick, T. O.,or anything but the game they are ostensibly covering.
I hate to even respond to this latest nonsense. Rex and Ced are both guys who have fought their way to the top through mental and physical toughness and ability.Have any of you nay-sayers actually been run over by a back like Ced or burned by a quarterback like Rex? I played safety and can say a definitive "Yes" to both questions. Neither is a memory I cherish.

By the way, Roman, have you forgotten that the Cubs are tied for first and fighting for an appearance in the World Series? They pulled out a great one last night and turned a superb double-play.

I've been reviewing the blog for the past few weeks without responding. Just to see what people are talking about. I would have to say I disagree without about 90% of the posts. To me, a lot of guys on here are not real bears fans. Grossman & Benson will come of age. Benson's finally the featured back in his 1st game, and people have already made a final judgement. Grossman reminds me of Brett Favre earlier in his career. Favre might of been worst at this point. Similar in playing style (gunslinger, throws off back foot, Favre just threw more INT's. Packers fans stuck with their man all those years ans u see what happened. If u see the potential there, it will eventually come thru given the period of time. I've seen plenty of flashes to convince me he's going to be straight. Damn a conservative offense, playing safe with Griese or Orton at qb. Boring! I'd rather take chances with a gunslinger!

Cedric the NoGroundGainer. That'll be this guy's legacy. I just can't imagine Benson ever being consistent in mind and body from what he's shown so far.
Grossman is only going to be worse overall this year, being Jones is gone. Grossman doesn't make 'things happen' often enough like good quarterbacks do. I don't think he ever will.
Nothing would make me happier than to believe in the capabilities of these two players. And BTW, Griese isn't the answer, either. I watched him play for TB and, although I feel he's passable, (forgive the pun), he's no Super Bowl winning QB. He self-destructs at the end of pressure games.
Then again, I never thought Trent Dilfer could do it either, so what the hell do I know.

Kruel (to be kind?):

Good post. Completely off base, but good post.

Comparing Favre's development and Rex's development is not fair to either player or either team. The Packers were not good during Favre's early years. Both the team and the QB matured together. That's not the case with the Bears. The Bears have a legitimate chance to go back to the Super Bowl. They are good now. They need Grossman and Benson... and the offensive line and the receivers to produce... and be good now. Given the punishing nature of football and the Bears' organizational history, many fans are anxious for a SB title with the team we've got because there is no guarantee that the team will be together or as good next year. That drives our collective anxiety up a notch or two. We see a good season ahead (and maybe a great season)if only Rex performs, Benson pounds the ball, the receivers stay healthy and the line blocks. Oh, and the defense has to remain tough. I've tried to be pretty fair with Rex and Benson, but this team's too good to wait too long for their collective potential to shine somewhere down the line. The time is now for this team, this quarterback and this town. Maybe we are being too tough, but that's the nature of the game and Rex and Benson are getting paid well to perform. Now's the time for both to excel.

Smart move Hitman, getting rid of Favre, but he's gonna have a field day with the Giants this week. You should dump Hester, too. There must be a free agent available in your league worth more than him.

Also, what is is going to take from "RexandCed" for you to stop posting your song? I mean, if they just go out and, oh I don't know....not turn the ball over, is that good enough?

Not sure why everyone cares what a couple of san diego players think or say. I never heard of them before and doubt I ever will again. Besides Sandiego is basically just a suburb of tijuana. And as cities goes, the people there say the best thing about their city is the weather, which is sort of like saying the best thing about Denver is the altitude. Which, now that i think about it, may also be true, but doesn't really say much for either city now does it? I mean if the weather gets bad in Sandiego cause of globalwarming say, does that mean there's no good reason to live there?

As far as benson being soft, he's texas tough, which means in comparison to oklahoma and louisiana. And that mental midget comment about Grossman, well my cousin little cletus thought that was a real nice compliment. He thought it just meant that rex was a smart midget.

come on, bcool..you're hurtin my feelings...it's not about the rhyme...it's about the reason...and more about the rhythm....

lol, you're white...so am I...DMX made me bust how lilly I am....but hey, what can I say?...but ok... alright, I rule anyway, but really, who cares?...we all go poop, right?.....and ya know.. I don't know anything about Iran and Iraq...I committed a felony on purpose so I wouldn't have to vote...no, not with DMX.....but... so ya know my level of giveashittedness....

But... I give props to the troops...Heck, if I was gonna die for nothing... I would at least want you to clap...and "they" all clap...I hate sayin that crap...depends on the crowd, tho....

I do steal every towel at the gas station,tho...charge me $3/gallon?...I will take a stack two-three feet high of paper towels...and I do....every time...I'm not kidding...just got done stripping shell down about 3 hours ago....

enjoy 8 years of Hillary, tho...and ha ha...'bout time...

It's been my experience that people immersed in politics have one common interest in common....their own...and as kids go hungry...and uneducated...oh, trust me...I could get way meaner...or more mean...but I choose to hug...because they're grateful for the things I'm still grateful for...

Anyway...

Rex is Favre?...lmmfao...I guess the "no-heart-no-guts-no-athletic-ability" version....lol, Kyle has a better Arm.....I'm embarrased for.... "y'all"...Favre is a man, Ladies and Gentleman....I said "MAN" if you missed it...

Benson...we coulda drafted Merriman and Julius Jones in '05...Am I the only sane one here?...

Funny..wonder why I'm so direct about my opinion?....have you taken a look at our defense?.....I think it's the best... who has ever strapped on a jock...collectively...yes, the #1 circle jerk ever.....

But the bad joke...J.A.'s a dumb-ass....Kyle is the future...and RB is AP ...not my opinion, but....TJ kinda mentioned it a while back....have you watched "the run" yet?

ok, time for me to do something you'd wish I'd film and sell....

Later.....

All my best...in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1....

Hitman and Big Willie, that was priceless! We just don't want to look in the mirror do we?

1 - Most of the fans don't like those guys.
2 - They lost the SB
3 - They show it in the preseason
4 - They lose the first game
5 - They get called out by a team not even in the SB last year
6 - I bet you there is not one team in the AFC really afraid of them
7 - Neither of them showing ANY signs of improvement.
8 - Already blaming Turner

By the time the smoke clears - our great Defense will be too old.

Het,kruel, amen! brother.

It's pretty simple folks. If Rex has no pressure in his face he can make plays downfield. If Rex is pressured, forget it. Unfortunately, every defensive coordinator in the country understands this fact. Unfortunately, our offensive coordinator doeesn't.

BTW, anybody see that Nike football commercial? Best commercial ever, hands down. Put chills down my spine...

Culzie, you're an extension of my life in AZ...I can dig the connection, I dont dislike ya...disagree with ya? yep...I do the same with my wife...what's the point....are ya cute?...sorry..playin

If anyone compares Rex to Farve one more time I'm gonna scream like a banshee. Will you guys cut it out. It's like being 40 and your aunt still tweaks you cheeks and talk baby-talk while doing it. Ask Brett if he see any semblance of Farvish-ness in Rex's play. He'd kick you in the head for even saying it. Farve in college played after having surgery to remove a few feet of intestines. Rex has a down game when Nair burns his eye-brows. One was tough and had a certain swagger to go with the brashness. When has Rex been brash? When he admonish the media for talking bad about him? I would absolutely love for this guy to be a great or even an above average player, but it's all on him to do that. Cut out the ridiculous comparisons. He plays more like Jeff George than anyone else. And fumbles like Warren Moon. And Brett didn't have a great team in his youth to disguise his mistakes. Even when he stunk it wasn't an embarrassment for kids in Wisconsin to wear a #4. Try wearing a #8. 1st Mcnown and now Rex. Just retire that jersey already will ya. And while you're at it retire that Farve-like comparison to old #4. Somebody has to be ashamed by now.

The way any soldier has died for nothing, is if they died for your ability to affect positive change. Cause that is clearly a lost cause.

Your right keith, hitless' post was priceless...as in...It wasnt worth a penny.

Dude....politics is nothing more than household management on a larger scale, but you probably live in a basement with beer can pyramids for art and dark sheets for blinds. I wouldnt expect someone who commited a felony with or without DMX, so they could get out of voting, to understand.

When Rex does eventually does turn it around, and solidifys as a NFL QB. #1 I hope its with the Bears, and #2, what a story it will make huh??? The gritty underappreciated tough skinned gunslinger...who stood up to a entire country of dissmissing and hometown course of boo's and percievered and kept his chin up and a smile on his face. SHOOT, in his first Full season he went to the superbowl. He had some bad games, but he won enough of the right games to get there. More than most can say. You know he will be in the league for another 10 years...he is not like Cade McNoName...this kid is a winner from a huge football family from a huge football backround from a huge football college!

Mark my words....diss now, kiss later!

watch it happen. im never wrong.

Good post JohnY...good commercial..too!
