He looked good at times, very good - even though he underthrew the ball to Berrian that should have been a touchdown - and then he's picked for a touchdown. Not to mention the fumbled snap. So which is he? Good or bad? And shouldn't we be passed this question by now?
And I loved the reaction to the fumbled snap, by the way. The fans clearly have had enough of an NFL quarterback fumbling the snap so often, even though some of Rex's fans think it's a non-story. Can't wait to see the reaction when it keeps happening throughout the season.
Who knows, maybe he'll figure it out for the regular season and won't do it again. And maybe his inconsistency will be a thing of the past.
Yeah, right.
I'm praying San Diego takes this putz outta the line-up...preferably by exposing him...hoping someone gets hurt is lame, but if Merriman feels so inclined, far be it from me.....
Rex is nothing special....let's count those interceptions as two yesterday...seeing as how he made the same mistake twice in a row...and another fumble?..There is no "Good Rex"...there is nothing he does that every QB (with a strong arm) in the NFL cant do....He is only "Bad Rex"...he can't handle pressure...athletically or mentally...every time there's pressure or adversity...he fails...every time
Give him all day to throw or a mindless timing route...he has a nice arm...that's where it ends...if he has to pull the ball back down....lol, that's where it begins
I think Mariotti put it best today...it's the unfounded smugness...I liken it to the "coaches kid" who isn't the best at the position but starts no matter...and makes excuses everyone has to accept...cuz he knows he's the only option....puke sick type of stuff
Like I said before...The Tommie Harris comment...trust me when I tell you that's how the team truly feels
"Without RexandCed"....I can see my song getting more popular with every dropped snap.... and every two yard run
I know everything there is to know about the "Good Rex Bad Rex" situation, and here is the reality.
Rex is awesome, and will eventually break every single Bears passing record. The fans boo after botched snaps and picks to the house because those are bad things happening to our team. We're not booing because we want Rex replaced. We're booing because we're mad at that moment. Booing is an involuntary reflex for fans who actually care about what's happening.
Rex can't guarantee, as he tried to last week, that he'll never botch another snap in his career because that's something he can't control. How many snaps has rex taken in his life? Accidents happen. Guaranteeing to never fumble a snap is like guaranteeing to never stub your toe.
Everyone needs to get over the little things and notice that this guy has THE BEST ARM this city has ever seen. Period. Except for Mark Prior.
Playing only the first half, Rex Grossman completed 13 of 20 passes for 211 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 112.7 passer rating. Grossman tossed scoring passes of 25 yards to Bernard Berrian and 2 yards to Desmond Clark to help the Bears build a big lead.
Thats as Big of a pre-season line ive seen from any QB so far.
(dare I say, gimpse of hope?)
It is now time for Kenny Wiiliams and Ozzie Guillen to be fired by Reinsdorf. This last week was too much to see the massacre at the Cell by yhe Bo Sox. They humiliated the White Sox in their own back yard. I am totally embarrissed as a die hard Sox fan for over 50 years. I have invested a lot of time, energy and money for tickets to Sox games to see this happen. Loosing 4 games in 3 days to the Red Sox giving up doulble digit runs every game. It made my blood boil to see all those Red Sox fans cheering in our backyard at Friday's afternoon game was ridiculous. It is now time for Jerry to have guts to hire a new GM and a new Manager.

He improved greatly, but that was not hard to do. Defense will continue to carry him, but we will face a team that will match our defense and we will be in big trouble. Bears could go undefeated with a steady guy like Jeff Garcia. Its really sad because we are passing up a great opportunity. I believe the Bears defense has been Superbowl caliber the last two seasons. That running game scares me.
In the 49ers game, it was more 'Good Rex' and a little 'Bad Rex'. The mistakes he made were 'Rexa-vu' of other games; throwing into tight coverage, across his body, off his back foot, and pulling his hands out and apart too quick without the ball. What can you do?
If the defense dominates like it did and Rev's mistakes are minimal, then you can live with it. And, to his credit, Rex didn't go into the tank when he made mistakes. Plus, the offense benefitted from good to excellent field position in the first half; something the 2nd and 3rd string failed to have in the second half and it was a problem.
The biggest adjustment the Bears will need to make in the future is when defenses put down-lineman over both guards and the center. The 49ers did this on several occasions in the 2nd quarter and the line and Ron Turner had a hard time adjusting to the defensive front.
But, Ron Turner made the adjustment in the 'red-zone' and Adrian Peterson outran the linebacker to the outside, with a great block by WR Mike Hass, for a TD. Hass looks to have won the last WR spot with his blocking, running, and receiving ability to go along with being active on special teams; including one fumble recovery.
The Bears have good depth except at FB, OC, and C. If Jason McKie, Roberto Garza, Ruben Brown, or Olin Kreutz go down (especially a combination of them) for an extended period of time, the Bears are in trouble.
I do not believe in Rex, he has burned me too many times in the past. He has a million dollar arm and a 10 cent head. He is arrogant to a fault and will never learn from his mistakes. He will never win an NFL championship and neither will the Bears while he is the starting quarterback.
I am sick and tired of hearing, "he is the best we have had in the last 20 years". Well, so is the rest of the team, and their talents (and this window of opportunity) is being wasted by the organization's stubborn insistence in playing him. Give me the lower upside - and more importantly, the much lower downside - of Griese or Orton. The Bears would win just as many games with them, as they would win with Rex.
For the Rex supporters out there, name me one game he has played where he has "won the game" - I say none. He has played well, but name one game where, if Griese or Orton had played, the result would have been different. I can't think of one.
This is the crux of the matter - is sticking with Grossman winning you games you would otherwise lose? I think the answer is a resounding NO!
Hi Roman. Am I the only one who thinks Rex's arms are too short for his body? Anyway, football season is here again, and again I'll watch the Bears games through my trembling fingers. Good luck to Rex and good luck to Bear fans. Maybe his inconsistency WILL be a thing of the past. Yeah...well, maybe I'll stop hating my sister-in-law, too. Cheers.
I'm not sure myself.
My cousin Cletus was wondering if there was anyway the bears could play the 49ers every game this season. Cousin Cecil thought the 49ers just ran a vanilla defense against the Bears and didnt do anything to get after Rex.
Hard to tell if he'll be able to make the same nice throws and mind numbing unforced errors against a good team, playing all out on defense, that has specifically schemed to get in Rex's face.
you have to love the bears d though. With brown and urchaletta in there the d is going to be fun to watch. With this Defense and the return game, any quarterback should be able to get a win if they don't just hand the game away with bad interceptions and fumbles, even orton, or griese or that other guy.
With Rex I think there will always exist that doubt because actually I think he has it himself. Good and bad exist in him when it comes to confidence because he's not the most confident guy all the time. He's coddled in a sense because I don't know if he responds with positives after negatives are brought up. Here's an example of proper mindsets: remember when Gould bounced that kick off the post in for the three, he actually tried to figure it out and just blew it off like "forgetaboutit". Rex can't do that enough. It's all between his ear-holes the problem that keeps persisting. I think he has a lot of false confidence and that fails him every once in a while. He's very talented. And he is the best Q.B. on the roster, but who knows how much better he'll be once he gets it right upstairs. Frankly, his talent is as scary as his mistakes because you're bound to believe that either one will show up on any given play. If he didn't screw up every once in a while he'd probably be the BEST Q.B. in the league because he has the best overall talent of skill position players in the NFL. No one else has these many weapons. NO ONE!!
Mostly good I thought. But the red flags are still there. I guess this is who Rex grossman is. He'll give you 5 brilliant plays, and then bam! He makes one of those mistakes that makes you suplex him! Rex can throw some of the prettiest passes you'll ever see. So you know he has the Talent. I guess I better get myself prepared for another wild ride. I really wanted him to have a mistake free night so he can shut some of the haters up at least for one week. It seems sometimes, if Rex makes one mistake, thats all people focus on. He could go 11-12 with 3 tds for 250 yard with one pick, and the Head lines would say: "Rex threw another pick today in a Bears win." It amazes me sometimes. The offense did score 31 points in one half. They pretty much moved the ball at will on a supposed up and coming team. So you know when he's focused, the kid can light it up. Keeping him focused is the challenge.
Ken Dignan, I wondered why you posted here and I saw there was not a thread. Roman, this weekend's dominance by Boston is blogworthy. I was at the game on Friday - with a CUBS fan from my office. And he was as nice as they come. While many folks are just getting their lights back on in the city - the Whitesox need to call exellon about their own power outtage. And Ken you had to BE there to see how many Redsox fans were there. I wanna say 40% Redsox. I kept asking them how in the world did they all get tickets? And did they all fly? Cause Southwest Airlines got PAID! Something wasnt right! And when they finished with us, all of the Socks were Red, cause ours were dripping in our own blood! Headlines should read "Sox get Gangstered on the Southside". I still don't call for Kenny and Ozzie to get fired, but this must NOT happen next year. If they don't bring it, have a fire sale in August next year.
I fear 'Good Rex' and 'Bad Rex' have united to form a Ultra-Mega-Rex.
I'll say this once and then leave it alone: I can respect the Rex-lovers' opinions for the most part, but I've had it with the inconsistency. When you add 5 pounds of ice cream to 5 pounds of manure, all you get is ten pounds of manure.
I'm not too worried about Rex. I think as time goes on we'll see less and less of bad Rex. Most of his weaknesses can be overcome with practice and experience and his talent is undeniable. My real concern is Benson. I'm a big fan of Benson's and expect great things from him down the road, but he certainly doesn't look like he's ready to carry the running game right now.
Chicago fans and sportswriters are as bad as those silly people who kept harping about T.O. at Dallas last year.I liked Click Clack's comments : it's because we care. However, Desmond Clark's comments were basically more in tune with my attitude. Rex is our quarterback and gives us the best chance of winning.Get used to it and cheer for the great plays rather than carp about every little miscue.
He probably won't be around for too long after Shaun Merriman turns him into his own personal Hand Puppet!!
Roman responds: Are you referencing Seinfeld?
When you add 5 pounds of ice cream to 5 pounds of manure, all you get is ten pounds of manure. (darryl)
Thats a great phrase!!
Good Rex. Bad Rex. Who cares?
I think the entire team is a bit too cocky, a bit too sure of itself. In addition, Lovie seems to be floating along in "I'm smarter than you land" and that's never a good sign. The center- quarterback exchange problem is a perfect example of an issue that gets shrugged off in that "we know better than you" mentality that seems to have infected the team this year. I played center for six years in high school and college. I can remember botching only one snap during a game and that was in a downpour. They botch several in two games at the pro level and shrug their shoulders. The snap is a simple, fundamental thing. If they aren't concerned about executing the fundamentals, what else aren't they concerned about?
I'm hoping the team doesn't land with a big thud once the season starts. The Bears defense could be great, but they never seem to be let loose to play the kind of dominating game that they should play given their speed and experience.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Bears can back up their swagger once the real games begin.
It's only pre-season and San Fran isn't that good of a team.
I don't think we will really know how good this team will be until the first regular season game. That's when they count. Defense looks like it could be dominant and Tommie Harris hasn't even played yet. San Diego will be a good measuring stick.
Rex is like Jeckel and Hyde. He needs to be more consistant and cut down on turnovers. With this defense, all we need is a QB that won't turn the ball over. The running game needs to step up,too.
John F,
The Seahawks game in the divisional round of the playoffs!
About the game, if preseason games don't count when they blow teams out, they shouldn't count when a few mistakes are made. The D did look good but it is only preseason, but with Rex, I am at a loss for words about the fumble. With the pick, Ditka said they were sitting on the routes(good observation), just use the wide side of the field or run a wheel route, both could have been better than what he did. Looked like Jim Harbaugh against Minnesota out there(game still gives me nightmares.)
Three preseason games have been played now. Lets see that extensive list of quarterbacks with no turnovers. Yea, don't waste your time there isn't one. I do believe there is a few that have not thrown a TD though. I like the line, "don't throw into tight coverage". Duh! I think that what a pro quarterback is suppose to do. The best QBs make those throws most of the time. If all you had to do was hit wide open receivers Bobby Douglas could have been a pocket QB.
Go Bears
Non fans . . . stick a sock in it!
Anyone who says they'd rather have Jeff Garcia than Rex Grossman lined up behind center for our team should be disowned by their loved ones, and never allowed inside the Chicago city limits ever again. Actually, the entire state of Illinois should be off limits.
Seriously, who out there is better than Rex? Tavarous Jackson? No. John Kitna? No. Brett Favre? No. Right now, Favre is an older, slower, weaker Grossman. In short, a poor man's Grossman. Let's see. J.P. Losman? No. Joey Harrington? No. Daunte Culpepper? No. Chad Pennington? No. Alex Smith? No. Matt Hasselback? No. Trent Green? No. Damon Huard? No. Phil Rivers? No. Jake Delhomo? No. Byron Leftwich? No. Eli? No. Matt Lienart? No. Matt Schaub? No. Tony Romo? No. Michael Vick? No.
Vince Young, Payton Manning, Tom Brady, Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer... NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
We're on the verge of a dynasty! Stop complaining about it! And yes, Lovie is smarter than you. That's why he's the Head Coach of the Chicago Bears and you're blogging on suntimes.com... loser.
Roman responds: Hey, you're blogging on suntimes.com, too, so does that make you a loser and your points irrelevant?
Rex was the Bears BEST Q.B. for the day, but his mistakes are magnifying because there seems to be no end to the problems. San Fran is no San Diego. With any kind of rush this guy turns from Jekyll to Bad Hyde, so things could have been worse, seeing as S.F. had no pressure what so ever. This game was a bad barometer to what may truly be in the air, but to his credit he threw the ball well enough to control the game and give his 'D' the day off. Do we have ANY PLAYS where we dump off to the middle of the field?
Chicago will go 7-9 this year: 0-9 with Rex and then 7-0 with Griese. Highlight: Griese beating the Broncos by himself 38-3.
I don't think you're a loser, Roman, just wrong about Rex. I'm ashamed of that other Paul's ludicrous predictions, but playing Griese against Denver might be interesting. I'd bet that John E. woul attend that game, even at Soldiers'Field.
Chuck:
Nice try with the Seattle playoff game. Grossman fumbled after a sack which led to a Seahawks touchdown. He was also sacked several more times that game that led to punts.
The Bears won that game despite Grossman and because of Thomas Jones' running and some key defensive stops late in the game.
If Griese or Orton had played the game would not have been so close. Grossman gets no credit from me for screwing up the game with fumbles, sacks and interceptions and then making plays (that shouldn't have to be made) to keep the Bears from losing.
Ah, yes! Finally a direct response from Roman! No, blogging on suntimes.com doesn't automatically make me a loser, but rather an enthusiastic fan who's trying to talk some sense into all those who disagree with my stellar points of view. If I were claiming to know what would be better for the Bears than Lovie Smith, then yes, I'd be a loser. And a stupid one at that. Then my points would be irrelevant.
Six years from now everyone is going to wonder how on Earth they piled on Rex so heavily. After 4 Superbowls and 2 MVP's for Rex.
Roman responds: Only two?
Paul Anderson; What are you...six? You say you're a Chicago fan?
Fans like you need to remember one thing, grow up and get a job!
I know it's rude but it's tough love.
GO! BEARS!
John F,
I will give you the fumble, he shouldn't have turned and try to make that play, take the sack. But the other sacks, most qbs would have done the same thing after the big fumble.
Tom Brady had a 21-3 lead in the championship game. He didn't get the job done(yes he has 3 rings, but we are talking about now aren't we.) Romo fumbled a hold(talk about bad fumbles), Baltimore should've beaten the Colts. Mc Nair had a horrible int. near the goal line.
I credit the playcalling more than TJ (reminds me of James Allen). Most important though, I have visions of Alexander running through the Bears for the tying TD against our so called stoudt D. Grossman came back, when Romo couldn't and the others couldn't. It will help him this year (I hope.)
Romo, Garcia, and Brees are considered better qbs than Grossman. Brees allegedly has more talent, Philly is supposed to be a better team, and Dallas had Tuna. So why were the Bears and the Colts in the SB. Don't say home field either, if you are better, you are better anywhere. Maybe those teams are given too much credit (just like SD, how many SB victories do they have. but this season will prove who Rex really is...good or bad.
Roman responds: Only two?
LOL
I thought that this blog was emailed to Ted Phillips desk every day??? And...doesnt it also help to shape public policy in Washington??? Thats what someone told me anyways!!Thats why I blog here.
Don Wiedeman(and anyone else who'd like to participate)-- Let me know if you get this perfect analogy: Rex Grossman is to Brian Griese as Milli Vanilli is to Mozart.
If you don't get it, don't say you got it, and admit you've been stumped by a 6-year old.
Bottom line: Rex Grossman couldn't qb his way out of a wet paper sack. Dude sucks 24/7. I would accurately guess that this is Wreck's final season as a purported qb in the NFL. He'll be selling wind-damage insurance to you folks in Chicago next year unless of course it involves the handling of certain things. The Bears are pathetic solely because of this turd. Enjoy your 7-9 season.
Rex Grossman makes my eyeballs hurt when I watch him play. At the end of last season he was pretty awful, gaining many of his passing yards by throwing downfield and hitting the opposing player directly between the numbers on the back of his jersey, but getting a pass interference call for 50 yards.
That said, the offensive line of the Bears last year was insanely porous. It would be interesting to see what Rex could do if he weren't constantly running away from defensive linemen.
Clint Clack! I like your posts! They are extremely hopeful! 2 MVP's??? You are a die hard Bears fan and I applaud you for it! And I already know what you said about me in the other post! You know its possible to root for your team and still see their weaknesses? It can actually be fun to discuss also. Lovie is a brother and I give him all the credit in the world for how he handles the press, and the teams current success, but he has made several mistakes. And one of them is not putting Rex in the shot gun last year. Another is letting Devin Hester block/play defense this year. I still support Lovie and the Bears and Rex, but to say they are beyond scrutiny is a bit too much.
Keith are you running for office??
Paul Anderson don't go away mad... here let me lift your rock for you. What you suggest is highly unlikely even if you were quarterback for the Bears.
How do you like your crow?
