Obafemi Ayanbadejo tests positive for banned substance

| | Comments (66)

Actually, he tested positive earlier in the year, which led to his release from Arizona. He lost his appeal today. He's going to miss a quarter of the season.

Maybe he should play baseball. Apparently they have this cream that can't be detected - but will make you the greatest at baseball. He is stoopid to mess around after the Tank debacle.

didn't know he was on the bears till just now

How much control does "substance enhancement" have over professional sports today? It has obviously infiltrated all major athletics (even professional golf players have started to complain about it). Is there even a way to effectively test for it? Or will it always come down to whoever can get away with it by using the newest designer enhancement drug that is undetectable by current testing methods.

When it comes to this type of stuff happening, all I can say is...If you're gonna take a supplement...tell the NFL what you're gonna be taking...let them say yes or no before putting it in your body

It's unfortunate because it's ticky tack and not a steroid....

and going thru my head right now....besides RichieZiskRichieZiskRichieZisk...

Jim Miller Juicin

Did he play Canseco back in Oakland too?

Did he play with Canseco back in Oakland too?

Drive carefully in your free time, Obafemi!

An anti-estrogen component? What in the world? I think we should let athletes use science and technology to enhance performance, just like we apply science and technology to every other possible facets of our lives. Do the Amish control sports doping policy? Why not let the athletes improve? Because people who played in the '30's are jealous of how good they are? Because it wouldn't be fair to the "clean" athletes? Since when is life fair? Did I miss the memo or something? I personally don't think its fair for athletes to earn millions of dollars by staying "clean". I pay to see the best athletes, not the "cleanest" athletes. I could care less about what goes into getting on the field. I care about what happens between the lines. Bob Ley can take his show and shove it.

If an oxygen breathing bipedal carbon'based lifeform with nervious, circulatory, and respiratory systems along with an id, ego, and superego , and no bionic body parts accomplishes an athletic feat, I'm cool with it. That's the only criteria I have for an athlete-said athlete must be a member of our species.

I honestly don't understand doping policy, and I'm, to be modest, not a man of little education.

Performance enhancers are awesome if they enable you to make millions and set records. Or in Ayanbadejo's case, win the SuperBowl.

Don't tell me that the BEARS didn't see that coming. Arizona was the death of one player's BEAR career already. Now this. Will they give him a 2nd chance even though we hasn't been here long enough to even sample cold weather. When will players who violate that substance abuse policies get kicked out of the league? Is 4 weeks enough time to punish players? Guys are getting suspended 8 games and whole seasons but the cheats get 4 games. Goodell isn't tough enough if he hasn't strengthened that policy to punish cheats. I think that this is a black eye for the organization because they talked all that smack about character and they go out and signed a player who was destined to be suspended.

Clint I am in your corner here. This case should show how stupid some of these rules are. Track and field or cycling could probably make a case to outlaw 'roids. But even then all the athletes are on'em anyway so the playing field is level. Any other sport has no case. I don't care if Ayanbadejo has been using horse hormones for 10 years, he is an NFL back-up and special teams player AT BEST. It has enhanced his physical appearance and added some strength and stamina, but he is still limited talent wise with what he can do. If he shows in pre-season that he has developed into a world beater (highly unlikely) then maybe I'll change my tune.

Arizona is not for the faint of heart!

This just in....

10 year old T ball player found with Anabolic Lollypops in his backpack......(developing)....

Okay, we can stop overreacting--he knew he tested positive in April, told the Bears about it when he tried out. This is only news now because he lost his appeal. It's not like he just started using something and just now tested positive--the Bears knew this was a possibility when they signed him.

Roman responds: And I find it interesting they signed him anyway, especially with everything going on with Tank.

Hey...my Buddy can get Hoodia lollypops.....weight lose, while you suck!!

Anyone??

Culzie, that's disgusting.

Suspects are in custody in Antoine Walker robbery...Antoine, PLEASE don't trot your mother up with you at any press conference.

a lot of these rules are flat out STUPID - an American bald guy was banned in Japan for using a "banned substance" which was.
drum roll please.

Finasteride - the active chemical ingredient in Propecia, the FDA approved pill for baldness.

it's supposedly banned because it can mask other "real" steroids.

it's kind of like the rush to ban Ephedra because a couple of fat guys died while taking it. Maybe they were taking too much? Maybe it was their time to die, they lost the battle of "crap happens"?

of course in the USA crap cannot just "happen". It has to be someone's FAULT.

im pissed i made two lollypop jokes in the same thread!!~!

How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a lollypop?

Depends. Is your tongue is on performance enhancers?

Clint Clack and K. Brown,

There is only one good reason to ban steroid use: steroids have a lot of health risks and unpleasant side effects. If steroids were legal then everyone would have to do them to stay competitive, and most people would prefer not to put crap in their bodies that will potentially harm them in a variety of unpleasant ways.

Now, why they test for cocaine and marijuana I'm not so sure. I guess they're just nosey.

Did the Bears manage to improve their offensive line in the off-season? I really hope so.

And they weren't even funny! I think you have a thing for Jose Canseco.

I personally believe that he got caught up in the same trap as Jim Miller did a few years ago. Miller purchased an over the counter energy suppliment that unbeknownst to him, contained one of the 2,361 substances banned by the NFL.

This type of mistake could be made by anyone, and it's unreasonable to expect an athlete to bring everything he injests to a lab for testing. If he's telling the truth, I hope that he's able to sue the manufacture, and at least recover the wages he will lose as a result of using their product.

On a brighter note, Obafemi, while being Greise's second option, made a nice play for the TD last night.

Another observation: I've expressed my reservations about Grossman many times, and last night did nothing to change my opinion of him.

If you look at the way he played and compare it to Greise's performance, the differences are obvious. Rex's game plan was simply, "Don't screw up", while Brian was clearly focused on getting into the end zone.

I believe this will become even more evident as the pre-season progresses.

Roman:

I'm sure you're either very busy, sleeping, or hung over... but after events like the first pre-season game, you should update your blog a little more promptly.

I'm sure that many people have opined since last night, but 24 hours after the last post we're still staring at a blank screen.

Roman responds: Hey Mark, if you don't like it, go somewhere else. As I said in my last entry, smart guy, I'm on vacation. I'm in Calif. and wasn't sure Mike would update today. So I"m doing it and he'll do it tomorrow. What part of that don't you understand?

Roman, I know I'm probably 1 of 2 people who care somewhat about hockey at this point in Chicago. And I also know this is blog isn't about the hawks. But check out this deal by Tallon (maybe a new blog entry???):

Here's the trade...just try to guess who Tallon traded and who he got.

Player A. 26 yrs old. His stats last year:

Goals Assists Points +/- PIM
14 27 41 -4 26

Player B. 32 yrs. old. His stats last year:

Goals Assists Points +/- PIM
3 9 12 -20 25
Only played in 33 games last year (and still managed a -20).

I think I'm going to go puke now...

Roman responds: Good post.

I think these NFL guys are stupid. How many times has a guy been suspended for using a supplement that is in an over the counter substance? They have a list. Check it out with the trainer before you use it. He deserves to be suspended for just being stupid.

Maybe the guy really did get the stuff in the drugstore not knowing the supplement had a banned ingredient. That's what he said anyway. I kind of like his being united with his brother. I suspect these problems will persist. Let's face it. We're a drug-oriented society. If they banned ibuprofen,I'd have to hire someone to mow my lawn for fear I wouldn't be able to walk the next day if I mowed it myself. Go Bears!!!

Roman Sez: "Roman responds: Hey Mark, if you don't like it, go somewhere else. As I said in my last entry, smart guy, I'm on vacation."

Sorry Roman; I didn't know you were on vacation.

The joke about the 10 year old was good. I dont care what anyone says.

Love the fire Romie!! (dude takes his vacation very seriously)

Mark, your comments on Griese/Grossman border on the silly. Which one threw an interception? I know Griese also threw a touchdown pass and had a bit higher quarterback rating, but clearly we were looking at good Rex. Eighty percent completion is something one can take to the bank. Whether you like it or not, Rex is going to be the quarterback that takes them back to the Super Bowl. Griese could well get bumped by Orton, who looked and played very well against Houston. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do against a better defensive secondary and faster linebackers.

Paul sez: " Griese could well get bumped by Orton, who looked and played very well against Houston."

Which game were you watching, Paul?

From where I sat, Rex is the one who could get bumped by Greise.

Orton looked absolutely lost in his first series, and made Greise's interception look good by comparrison.

Brian was sharp, and focused, while Rex was content with throwing outlet passes for a few yards, and not screwing up.

Rest assured, the more he's out there, the more you'll see the gaping holes in his game.

Rex is a figment of Jerry Angelo's imagination, and he's been shoved down Lovie's throat since the day he was drafted.

He'll be cut loose by the end of the season, and won't even be given a tender offer.

Mark V., I didn't get to watch the game because they didn't show it in my area. I just went by statistics the way good analysts do. It was Orton who brought them back to win the game with a field goal in the last 38 seconds, wasn't it? That really doesn't seem like a guy who was "absolutely lost." Besides, how many games has Orton won as a pro in how many starts? What are Griese's stats in that regard? Don't get me wrong here. I do like Griese as a back-up but I think Orton could also handle the job almost as well. The difference is experience, and clearly Griese is way ahead there.Even so, I'll take good Rex two to one over B.G.or Orton any time. The coaches have their reasons for putting him as number one.

I guess I'm NOT the only one who realized that Rex was more interested in not making mistakes (looking sharp) than getting the team into the end zone. Let e say it one more time, Rex is NOT an NFL quarterback.

Big frickin deal. Losing Oblongknee Ayanbadejo is like if the Bulls lost Viktor Krhyapa for six weeks. It makes no difference. Do you think a hopeless, sorry, hapless franchise like the Cardinals would release a player if he had one ounce of talent?

Hey...Cardinals...are going to be ok....watch out for them. We should worry a bit more, they disected the bears last year. Leinart is a stud, so is Q and Boldin and if edge can bust in back to form, with Grimm as Oline coach and Wissinator as coach. Mark me down here...they could be sleeper team in NFC.

Hey John S- The dirty little secret about anabolic steriods is that with responsible use there's not any evidence, let alone proof that they cause any health problems whatsoever.

Actually it's quite the contrary. There are bull-like 80 year-old men out there pumping iron and banging their wives who have sworn by anabolic steroids for decades.

I'd rather be on 'roids than Flomax, Leptoprim, Viagra, Viox, Lunesta and whatever other crap people are on to keep them nice and "healthy".

For the record, I was a D1 running back and I never took steroids. Maybe I should have. Then I wouldn't be stuck in a crappy job. I'd be making millions.

Clint, you just epitomized the entire debate here.

As a young football player, you were faced with a decision and you went the right way, but....looking back....you regret your decision....hmmmm....I wonder how many of your peers went for it, and ended up getting in the league.

Then again, I wonder how many take steroids, and DONT MAKE IT.

MG, you can say that Rex is not an NFL quarterback as many times as you like, but he's still playing as a starter in the NFL and took his team to the Super Bowl his first full year of playing. From your perspective,do Favre,Montana,Young,or that guy from Denver qualify?

Paul, From my perspective Rex averaged 1 turnover per quarter in the Superbowl and did more for the Colts 2 win than helping his own team.

Mentioning Rex in the same sentence with PROVEN winners is just plain silly.

Paul sez: " The coaches have their reasons for putting him as number one."

You're darned right they do. He's Angelo's boy, and his # 1 draft pick. 'Nuff said.

As far as Orton is concerned, you should have seen the game instead of going by the stats. Compared to Greise, he didn't look all that hot.

Oh, and one last point.

For the NFL to be concerned about health issues arising from steroid use would be just about the most hypocritical thing imaginable considering the act of playing football is itself just about the most detrimental thing you can possible do to your body. Actually, getting in 35 car wrecks every Sunday may be worse. How many former players can't walk at the age of 55 due to shot knees because of the "game"?

I see someone has turned into somewhat of a fan of another team because of his proximity. Stuck is still anti-Green Bay and as long as he is, I guess all is still right in the world.

If ANY of you guys actually believe Grossman "led" the Bears to the Superbowl, you don't KNOW much about football.

When is the Chicago media going to start being honest about what they have in Grossman? NOTHING

I'm honestly baffled by people who think Rex is terrible, and that the bears have such better options. Would these disgruntled fans rather have J.P. Losman, Jeff Garcia, Jake Delhomme, Alex Smith, Daunte Culpepper, John Kitna, Chad Pennington, Matt Hasselback, Byron Leftwich, Trent Green, Damon Huard, and old Brett Favre or just about anyone else starting games out there? These fans act like we have Batman wating in the wings. The QB position is about character, attention to detail, arm strength, mental toughness, knowledge of the system, experience, and rapport with the recievers. These are things that take time, except for arm strength which I'd put Rex's up against anyone. You can't just snap your fingers and, viola, have Joe Montana leading your team. Everyone who calls for knee-jerk reactions at the QB position are idiots, plain and simple, have no idea of how to develop a good quarterback or football team. Anyone bashing Rex and calling for a change is a complete ignorant dumbass, and should take their stupid opinions and shove them up their... well, you get the idea...

Orton will be the starter before the year is over....Rex will be given every chance to fail....which is why I'm ecstatic we have the Chargers opening day

Just like TJ masked the deficiency at QB during his time here, we need a QB to mask the deficiency we currently have at RB....and Kyle is finally ready....and only way we win the Superbowl

ummm, this post brought to you by HGH, Winstrol, and Decca Durabol....proud sponsors on 756 home runs, Gold Medals, and premature deaths of athletes all over the world!!!

He was banned for Mxa LMG-its harmless and sold on the web. Its a low dosage prohormone that keeps you lean.

Aw gee, MG, watch Monday's game even though Rex will be on the first team. You think you have media problems! I live on the border of Wisconsin and Minnesota, so guess who gets stuck with Packers' and Vikings' games being televised even when the Bears are going undefeated.

Paul sez: "The coaches have their reasons for putting him as number one."

It's the same reason that Benson is now you're starting RB.

He didn't beat out Jones for the job, but was annointed by virtue of his position in the draft, and the millions of dollars of the McCaskey's money that Jerry Angelo invested in him.

First round draft picks who turn out to be busts usually sound the death knell for general managers, and much of Angelo's credibility has hinged on his rather questionable choice of Grossman.

If Rex had never made it onto the playing field, there would have been Hell to pay for Jerry in Lake Forest.

The fact of the matter is that Greise beat Grossman out during the pre-season last year, and Rex was still given the starting job. He could have thrown up goose egg passer ratings for the entire four games, and it wouldn't have mattered, because there was never any real "competition" to begin with.

Lucky for Brian, he's being compensated handsomely for participating in this farce.

Clint Clack, you state things a bit too vociferously, but I mostly agree with your observations. Rex will be great and barring injuries should be the Bear quarterback they've been looking for for years to come. I don't agree with Hitman that Orton should take over for Rex but wouldn't mind seeing him as above Griese. The only problem with that is I'd hate to see him get stuck the way Favre's back-ups have. He's certainly good enough to be someone's number one. Hopefully a Grossman-led Super Bowl win will silence those Rex nay-sayers the way J. Jones' performances lately have shut up his detractors.

I wish more people than just WRD would obsess on my every post, but I guess I just need to try harder.

FYI, all I said was dont sleep on the Cards, not, I am so pumped for the Cards. I am emersed in Cards info, so I felt it was an objective scouting report. but, spin it if you must!

Mark don't back down. Rex is going to make them all throw up. And he won't even have a decent excuse. He will smugly shrug it off. And Benson is worse than Rex. And that is the scarrier position because we don't even have a proven back if he gets hurt. Just like Leon - he's going to abnoxiously offer an excuse about everyone but Benson. With that said, Bears have improved on both sides of the ball, but there is NOTHING that can counter bad Rex, or the lack of a proven running game in the black and blue division. Add to it, the expectations from fans and media, some of which are saying "undefeated" and that equals a ton of pressure. Its exciting, and of course I hope um wrong, but I cannot predict superbowl knowing history is against it, and the Bears have two glaring weaknesses. And I haven't even addressed how the Bears allowed opponents to keep Rex under pressure either.

Camp Cedric says: You will all "RUE THE DAY"

I watched the Minnesota game the other day and we will have our hands full playing against Peterson this year. I have faith in the BEARS and even with my proximity to Wisconsin I won't be the least bit swayed by what I've seen from them. Anyone that kept bringing up a toothpick and dreads from a post from a gazillion posts ago need to have someone scruitinize their every post. Give it up man: You love the attention. Notice how I never say your name and you respond? You always say my name and it gets redundant after a while. I've seen a lot of good teams play this preseason and I'm not the least bit impressed with them like I am about the BEARS. Would you exalt about another team's probability if it wasn't for the proximity of the one you spoke of? That's all I said, as well.

Keith,
I think that u are way off base on Benson. I think with 20 carries a game the man will easily average 100 plus yards a game and will NEVER get tackled from behind by some slow defensive tackle.

Probably not actually!!! I wouldnt know Sh*t about the Cards, if I didnt live out here. No doubt. But, that doesnt mean I am rooting for them. Can you show me where I exhalted them? I just said not to sleep on them. I also know I liked Russ Grimm when the coaches were interviewing them, also I am a ND guy, so I hated lienart, but I can still give an honest account.

Unlike some people.

Vick the Victim: NYT Article Paints QB As 'Failed by Friends'
By Mark Finkelstein | August 18, 2007 - 16:44 ET
See incredible Roberts double-standard Update at foot.

Michael Vick, victim. That's how Selena Roberts's article in today's New York Times largely portrays the NFL QB accused of involvement with dogfighting. The article's headline sets the tone: Vick Is Trapped in His Circle of Friends.

Excerpts:

The crooked circle Michael Vick drew around himself has tripped and squeezed him.
The first to fail Vick was Davon Boddie, a cousin and personal chef. His marijuana possession charge in April led police to a white house with black buildings behind it on Moonlight Road in Surry County, Va. [Darn that Davon. If only he hadn't been busted on the pot charge, Vick might have been able to continue -- allegedly -- killing dogs that didn't make the grade.]
The first to flip on Vick was Tony Taylor, a fast friend from Newport News, Va., with an arrest record for drug trafficking and a traffic record for reckless driving.
The latest to betray Vick is Quanis Phillips, a friend since middle school. Along with Purnell Peace, Phillips, who once served jail time on a drug charge, accepted a plea deal on Friday and implicated Vick as the owner and operator of a dogfighting ring. [Does Roberts believe in the law of omerta?]
Group dynamics can collapse under pressure. Vick has been abandoned, left to contemplate a plea deal that could imprison him and ruin his N.F.L. career.
What is Roberts' point? Should Vick's friends, who presumably had all the QB's tough background but none of his advantages, have kept their mouths shut, prevented the truth from coming out, and done their time in order to protect him? It's hard for me to see Vick, with all the stardom and the $130 million contract that went with it, as the victim here. All he had to do was one thing: not participate in dogfighting.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, the fault, dear Selena, lies not in the underlings, but in the star.

UPDATE: Roberts was all for snitching . . . in the Duke lacrosse case. Allahpundit at Hot Air picked up my item, and fleshed it out with links to Roberts' articles on the Duke case, including one in which she wrote: ""[W]hy is it so hard to gather the facts? Why is any whisper of a detail akin to snitching? . . . The stigma as a traitor — and the threat of repercussion and isolation — is more powerful than the instinct to do what's right. Does President Brodhead dare to confront the culture behind the lacrosse team's code of silence or would he fear being ridiculed as a snitch?"

Snitching on Duke players: good. Snitching on Vick: "betrayal." Let's see, what could be the difference between the two cases?

Vick Admits!

Accepts Guilty Plea....(developing)

Do you know what the word somewhat means. If you laud their virtues just because you live down the street it would seem that you are somewhat of a fan due to your proximity. Why so touchy? And there have been plenty of times where you have acted like you know me. I know you don't.AAaaand it seems you get animated when the shoe is on the other foot. Slander? Call someone Ghetto expert and bring up some of the stuff you bring up and I'm sorry but you would seem to be the negative names I called you, bra. You kept dishing stuff out long after I ignored you. You are the one who brought my name up in a negative way to stress a point long after peace was called. I was fine just ignoring you. You can say whatever you want but THIS time I'm DONE...

Why am I still posting Vick comments on a Obafemi Ayanbadejo thread?

pinky truce?

Comment by WIliam R. Donald

" I think that this is a black eye for the organization because they talked all that smack about character and they go out and signed a player who was destined to be suspended."

That's the same thing that people were saying when the Bears decided to give Tank a second chance. However, they were quick to act when he fouled up in Arizona. Four weeks is enough for him to think it over.

Keylan i dont get it.?

speaking of Benson.

That guy scares me. I have nothing against him and want him to succeed, yet I haven't seen anything out of him while watching him play. He may be one of the least shiftiest backs in the NFL.

Everytime I see Benson, I see him crash into the offensive line and churn out a yard or two. Kind of like a younger Ottis Anderson of Bill Parcells and Rodney Hampton fame.

I don't think I've ever seen him create anything on his own. I rarely see a cutback.

It's a little scary and I don't want to touch him in my fantasy drafts though everything about the situation dictates success and it'd be hard to imagine that Angelo who's drafted so well for the Bears would be so wrong about Benson.

anyone else have the same fears?

Yes Bogey, especially after Saturday's game. The guy is umimpeded as the #1 guy and he didn't rize to the occasion in that game. Funny,it's the same team he hurt himself against his first year. Mental toughness to be the #1 guy? Maybe. Maybe not.

If you don't have a talent you need certain substances.
But America doesn't need you.

Obafemi Ayanbadejo was on appeal for a previous illegal substance ban before he joined the Bears. How some people forget, they themselves took steroids on the sly and other "performance enhancing "drugs during their "heydays"then they now want to be the "steroid police"with their bogus shock and awe that others would do the same things they did.How hypocritical is that? The Chicago teams have been known around the league(in different sports)as giving you second chances ,but these days second chances could cost them alot of money, steroids are not just used by primarily by minority athletes like the media is pumping it up to be,(Barry Bonds,Etc.)whites use it much more often ,but again look who runs the media and you will figure out the bias angle very quickly.
