Lance Briggs' car abandoned after accident

| | Comments (85)

Lance Briggs has some explaining to do.

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/529891,lambo082707.article
If Briggs was driving, and the State Police will find out, it wasn't the smartest move in the world to be out that late before an early practice the next day, and to be apparently going pretty fast. The car apparently was totaled.

It immediately reminded me of when I landed in Charlotte airport while covering the Bulls many years ago and hearing the game was canceled because Bobby Phills had died after racing his car the previous day after practice. I don't know if Lance was racing, but athletes do like their fast toys.

Why would he just abandon his super expensive car? This makes it look very suspicious. My initial thought was that he didn't want to the police to find out he was drunk.

Lets wait till we get all the facts!

If its true and it was him... That would be absolutely laughable. It would also be hard to imagine his car being totalled without him receiving an injury. This doesnt make sense.

Matt Heldman too!!

wow...Bobby Phills...that brought me back.

My only question regarding this situation is "what is a man who was all set to take out loans for this year doing with a $350,000 car?"

Actually Roman I had thought about the Bobby Phills incident when the Jamar Smith story was first reported and if memory serves me right David Wesley was the team-mate Bobby was racing with that night. It will be interesting to see what Lance has to say about his incident and if he was in the vehicle at the time. I wonder if every time David Wesley reads about some young kid getting killed street racing if he has flash backs of that night?

Hey it's the Lindsy Lohan of Chicago!!!

I hear the trends do move East.

Man! What do they have to do? Put everyone under house arrest?

I say ground the whole team for the season!

I just don't understand how people who are in public positions that in this case, they have satisfactorily gained by their own talent and not faulty voting machines, constantly do stupid things over and over again and think its OK.

I suppose its ego. I would hope that if it were me I would realize the incidence for stupidity goes way up as the toys get bigger and faster and I would adjust accordingly. And realize that I was not above the law so much as under the microscope of the law.

I hope it all works out.

OT Roman- Did you catch the fights this weekend? Ole Randy Couture amazed again. I keep saying its only a matter of time due to age but I don't know about that anymore.

I hope Lance Briggs tells the truth whatever the case may be; as this team doesn't need anymore 'Tank-like' distractions. Yet, it still puzzles me why athletes and people in the public eye don't take limos or have someone pick up their cars if they feel a little 'pie-eyed'?

BRING BACK TANK

Does it really matter...all we're gonna get from Briggs is a bunch of B.S.....It's fun to speculate, cuz one of the reasons is right...a person doesn't bolt from the scene if it's just an accident...especially not a millionaire..unless.....He was drunk....Had someone in the car he wasn't supposed to have...a boyfriend perhaps...or a buddie's old/current girlfriend...perhaps Tyna...

I'm still laughing picturing him paddle shifting his way into a spin....

and it was nice to see Brunos in fountain hills get a mention....by far the best Bears Bar in AZ....JT O'Sullivans is stupid, btw...Go to Brunos, find Rob...tell 'em Hitman sent ya

And the hits just keep on coming for these NFL players. I wonder if Roger Goddell anticipated he was going to have to be a warden instead of a commish? Anyway, these NFL players do provide me with tons of comic relief.

Hey Lance! give me a call Ill take the fall for it, but its gonna cost ya.

Thanks Lance. Now we will get to hear some lame excuse from your mouthsore of an agent.

I wonder if Danny Snyder is still going to overpay you to find out that Brian Urlacher makes you better.

Sadly, I am counting on Lance to lie lie lie because I have come to expect nothing else from professional athletes and their handlers.

AT LEAST THERE WERE NO GUNS, DRUGS, OR PIT BULLS INVOLVED!

Bculzzy, I totalled my car in a very similar accident and walked away without a scratch or bruise. And yes, I flagged down a passer-by and had them drive me to the next exit because it was SuperBowl Sunday and I had been drinking for the last 8 hours. In my case, an accident report was filed, but I was never ticketed. In this high-profile case, they'll pursue the truth about the driver because the fans and the media want to know. Hopefully, it was one of his friends driving, but even if it was Lance, they wont be able to convict him of drunk driving, only leaving the scene of an accident. If I were Lance in this situation, (well, first of all, I agree with Butch... I would've had a driver) I would've done the same thing.

"Poor" Lance Lohan. Makes you kind of want to boycott his first ten games this season. I hope Britney Briggs will be a man and 'fess up.

I can see Roger "Shoot First" Goodell licking his chops with this one, if not just to placate owners who are still freaking out about the loophole in the franchise tag.

Keith,

Matt Heldman was a passenger......in his Dad's Corvette.

If Lance was driving, he was under the influence of something. You don't just leave your smashed up Lamborghini if you have nothing to hide. As a matter of fact, it doesn't really matter what kind of car it is - sober people who get into accidents wait around for help. You call friends, police, AAA - anyone to come help you if you are in your right mind. I have a feeling Lance fled the scene so he could go sober up somewhere.

Of course he has to walk away from the incident. If he gets caught with a DUI, Goodall would have suspended him for part of the season, which would have made him miss some games. I would love to read his contract which stipulated if he was involved in a certain percentage of the snaps this year, he could not be listed as a franchise player at the end of the season. If he gets suspended he would be in jeopardy of that.

I'm sure Mariotti will have something dumb to say about it tommorrow. Stay Tuned.Go Mike Vick!

Looked to me like the car was actually facing the wrong way for the road...from the video.

In my opinion, the reason he would leave a $350,000 car is because it wasn't worth $350,000 anymore, and probably wasn't drivable--and I'm sure it was insured.

The whole thing can be summed up as plain stupidity. This is what we get for giving too much money to people who've made their way through college by having their brains knocked around.

He can talk to the police now, it's been 13 hours. The booze is out of his system. He's smart. He's a good player too.

Briggs doesn't need to lie. His attorney will do that part for him!

This is a clear case of "Holy Sh__! I just totaled my 1/3 of a million dollar car, and I am wasted, what do I do????" Sounds like he called his attorney or better yet, Drew Rosenhaus, who told him to flee the accident and take the misdemeanor. Better then the DUI + .... and will likely get a slap on the wrist from the league. I just hope he doesn't act smug, and comes out and answers for his actions. After all it is all of us who pay his salary and enable him to blow 5% of his money he is going to earn this year on a fricken car. I hope his insurance company doesn't cover it and he takes the whole hit at once. Maybe then won't be such an idiot.

The words of the immortal Red Foreman come to me now.... You all know what Red would say.

Chicago Cuz..I wish I could "blow" 5% of my salary on a car!!! Not much out there for $10K though...

If he was drunk or high, then he did the best thing possible. Now it is just a misdemeanor for leaving the scene. Now, I'm not advocating any illegal activity, but a misdemaenor is WAY better than a DUI and/or a gun charge and/or a hooker charge and/or pitbulls in the back seat etc. im guessing he called his agent before AAA and got his money worth of advice.

This isn't going to do any wonders for his looming free agency. I believe he was making about $400k/year before this season so he must have just purchased the car. He was advanced $1,000,000 as a show of good faith (bet the Bears wishe they had not done that) when he signed his one year deal. Did he immediately go out and spend $350k on this car (a depreciating asset) after getting that first check for $550k or so after taxes? What's he going to do if he gets a $20 million signing bonus? Does Rosenburg give any financial advice to his clients or is he just an enabler. Vick's decision to pursue dog fighting might end up costing him over $100 million in lost earnings. Briggs is damn lucky that a cop wsn't nearby or he might just have cost himself $10 or $20 million over the next 5 years. The stupidity is mind boggling.

Hey Eric Peterson ...I think you were referring to Keiths post about not getting a scratch. All I said was lets wait till we get the facts.I dont want to be REACCUSED of only piling on stories about AA"s getting in trouble.

But, can you imagine, if this woulda been Urlacher????? It wouldnt even have made the Pioneer press!!!

This is a funny thread though!

I would actually check out Bruno's, i live close to FH. I need a good Bears bar. Im getting sick of Zipps.

Have you ever been to Don and Charlies?

Keith,Matt Heldman was a passenger......in his Dad's Corvette.

Rick, that was my post, and him and his Dad were drinking and Racing down Milwaukee and they had done this before, and they hit and killed an old couple in a mini van Head On!

Briggs should find Jesus too!!! Cause that was a close call no doubt, you dont get too many of those.

Lance Lohan is flippin hilarious!!!! Nice one StanD

Genuis actually, im surprised I didnt think of it.

I hear Rex Grossman is to blame for the accident. Why not? Grossman is getting blamed for everything else.

Lance has no explaining to do. Don't we all understand by now? Are we really this stupid? There is a justice system for Lance and the Lohan kid and Nicole and Paris and Michael and O.J. and Robert Blake.

And there's a different justice system for you and me and Stash and Humberto and Laquandis and Butch and Irv and Juan and all the boys down at Benson's Barber Shop.

Nobody said life was fair.

So maybe next time Lance pulls a Fred Washington. And we all tsk-tsk and turn away and shrug, and 10 years later we say, "Lance who? Fred who?"

Calm down everybody, remember he is just a kid with money. People are entitled to some mistakes. He just happens to be the best linebacker with the most tackles every year that the Bears have. How many of you bloggers have a $350,000 dollar car! Just what I thought. Here's a man, who stood up to the Bears Management team. Spelled out his value and what he should be paid, and is basically on his way to becoming a very wealthy person. His team has his back and the true Bears fans have his back also. Lance knows who we are. What ever they say Lance, you know who controls the News media, and they aren't African American. We (African Americans)most definately got your back, the Hell with them my Brother. Don't do what Jordan did. Get paid right now!!Jordan finally got paid at the end of his career. After the Bulls organization made close to 10 Billion dollars off of him. Lance ! crack heads and drive as many $350,000 dollar cars as you want. They'll be watching, and waiting for your downfall. Lets see how long the news media will tell this stupid story. It's just a car accident! people. Get a life, and let him enjoy his. I know most of you haters would like to see him in the jail system. The American way, but he'll be just fine. Go Vick......

blackwise....I love the rationalization that Brigg's is "just a kid with money". I had more common sense that these poster child NFL clowns when I was 10.
"go vick"? Why do you want to display your IQ of 6 in front of all?? The Falcons are already better off with Harrington.

I say, no biggie, and also, I think that part of the Venom towards vick in these past posts, stems very much because he was an opposing QB. Not the way I woulda wished him to get taken out, I woulda prefered an Urlacher sack, season ender, but at the very least, we dont have to face him for the next couple years. So, in reality, GO BEARS!!!

Johnson, Vick, Briggs too little brains with too much money

I think Lance did this just so the reporters would have something else to talk about besides Rex. Lighten up people. What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"?

I hope this guy is punished and it costs him his career. There are plenty of other football players who will gladly take his place and most likely perform the same or better. Lance Briggs and all of the members of the National Felons League need to remember they are not above the law and CANNOT just do whatever they want because they have money or influence. I previously worked in law enforcement for over 10 years before practicing law and responded to numerous accidents where people fled the scene after crashing. It is the oldest trick in the book to avoid being pinched for DUI, possession, warrants, etc. He was trying to hide something and I would be willing to bet it was intoxication or he is protecting someone else. He was returning home from Chicago nightclubs on the Edens at 0300hrs. Put the pieces of the puzzle together, it doesn't take a genious to figure out what happened. Bottom line is he took a chance to drive recklessly while impaired. He is just another irrogant self-centered jerk who just contributed to further tarnishing the reputation of professional sports and it's members. This is why I WILL NOT spend my hard earned money on anything related to professional football ever again. Lance Briggs is an irresponsible overpaid idiot who should be released from the NFL immediately and forced to get a real job !! He is no different from any of us and needs to know that.

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "Calm down everybody, remember he is just a kid with money. People are entitled to some mistakes."

RESPONSE: People are entitled to SOME mistakes. Agreed. Especially the very, very young. However, people are not entitled to certain "mistakes." Thus, your premise is a bit irrelevent, since we do not yet know if this was a "mistake" or if it was a deliberate act. We do not yet know if this was a deliberate attempt to cover up for an activity which would certainly have resulted in an arrest, a possible suspension from driving and also his lucrative career, or a ban from the league, or even worse. The act of leaving the scene was a crime -- albeit minor. The act of leaving the scene in a case such as this forces one to question the motive. Lance knew as he left the scene that his action was illegal. Any driver does. (And, of course, ignorance of the law is no excuse, if there are any dolts out there who would try to ecquivocate and justify the man's illegal act.).

The motive for his deliberate act is the question one is almost compelled to ask in a case such as this. Just as so many in this country have asked why Teddy Kennedy left that scene at Chappaquidick that night so long ago.

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "He just happens to be the best linebacker with the most tackles every year that the Bears have."

RESPONSE: What, may I ask, does this have to do with the issue of whether he is guilty of a crime, and whether his minor crime was an attempt to cover up a much more serious, and potentially deadly crime?

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "How many of you bloggers have a $350,000 dollar car! Just what I thought."

RESPONSE: What, may I ask, does this have to do with the issue of whether he is guilty of a crime, and whether his minor crime was an attempt to cover up a much more serious, and potentially deadly crime?

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "Here's a man, who stood up to the Bears Management team."

RESPONSE: What, may I ask, does any of the above gibberish sprinkled with punctuation have to do with the issue of whether he is guilty of a crime, and whether his minor crime was an attempt to cover up a much more serious, and potentially deadly crime?

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "It's just a car accident! people."

RESPONSE: No, sorry, Jim, but any attempts at playing the role of some sort of apologist will not change the facts. In the case being discussed, it is more than a "car accident." It is a case of a driver who exhibited bizarre behavior when he left the scene of an auto accident, despite his knowledge that he was wrong to do so, and that he was breaking the law to do so. And, the fact is that he left the scene of an automobile accident knowing that the car would be easily traced back to himself, and yet he still made the decision to deliberately do so. And, the fact remains that he left the scene of an auto accident knowing that his status as a high profile celebrity would cause this to be a major news atory, much more so than if you or I were to commit the same deed. Despote this, he made the deliberate decision to leave anyway.

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "Get a life, and let him enjoy his."

RESPONSE: Jim, each and every person reading these words of yours has "a life," both in the literal sense and also in the sense that you meant it when you wrote the above.

At least, we continue to until we have the unfortunate luck to come between Lance and some poor tree. You see, Jim, there are reason that society has enacted certain laws, just as there are reasons that some things are morally right and other things are morally wrong. Keep reading that sentence above, and try to see if you can eventually learn that concept.

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "I know most of you haters would like to see him in the jail system."

RESPONSE: Uh, Jim, since you have never met me, nor any of the other posters above, I am wondering why you would refer to us as "haters." Surely you would not wish to be be accused of generalizing, a habit based on fear which often leads to serious issues such as racism, and nationalism, and other abhorrent behaviors.

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "The American way, but he'll be just fine."

RESPONSE: You may be right. You may be wrong. We shall just have to see, of course. Despite your rather strange confidence. Teddy Kennedy was "all right" after his similar crime. He ruined his chances at ever running for President, yet he managed to salvage a career as a Congressman and wait until many had forgotten his sins. However, I am proud of you, Jim, at last. If Jim Mueller manages to to "contain" this crime and its potential effects, this may be the first correct statement you have made in your post. He may indeed be "all right." Sad, isn't it.

JIM MUELLER WROTE: "Go Vick......"

RESPONSE: A rather sick statement, given the facts. I urge you to think about this.

-Jamahl Warner

After reading blackwise post all I can say is. WOW!!!

Lance, I know you are about to get paid, he was so worried about getting hurt on the field, what about getting hurt in the car (ask Jay Williams). That was a stupid gamble, if he suffers a career ending injury smashing up one of his 1/3 million cars who is gonna pay for the next one. Man, Briggs a few words,

NEED FOR SPEED CARBON,

play the game don't ruin your life trying to live it. You can drive recklessly after your career is over and all the money is in the bank.

I hate to be the one falling for this. But is the post from blackwise man for real? It can't be.

Everyone that said "Go Vick"....I suggest you make a point of some kind if you mention the guy's name.

JT, thanks for doing the math for all of us about your salary. It really added a lot to this topic. Call me a cynic, but I can't help but wonder if you labored over that 2 sentence post to try to make yourself sound like you make more money than you actually do.

Now back to Briggs story, I am wondering why anyone would rush to his defense on this topic when there isn't really anyone here attacking Briggs in the first place. Talking about what ethnic backgrounds run the media is irrelevant. If we're going to split hairs, which I really have no interest in doing, you're going to find out that what Briggs did was against the law and nobody should be expected to overlook it. Whether or not the guy "gets paid" or the fact people may want to see his downfall (or any other points blackwise man tried to make) has absolutely nothing to do with this.

For me, it's an issue of a player that spent months whining about how much money he made. I know holdouts are a necessary part of the business for players. But when when he allows this to happen only a few weeks after signing, I am justified like any Bears fan to be annoyed by it. His responsibility to me as a fan is not just during the 60 minutes during the game. It extends from the minute he is signed to the minute he is no longer under contract. And in between, he is responsible for making sure he does nothing that can get in the way of contributing to this team. I think it's a fair expectation for me to have that Bears players do not engage in late night (and possibly impaired) reckless driving. But frankly, I couldn't care less about his personal safety. I care about the negative impact it would have for him to be sidelined and the way things like this tarnish the game and the Bears organization. Blackwise Man talked about "true Bears having Briggs' back". That couldn't be further from the truth. True Bears fans are annoyed by this and view Briggs as a commodity, nothing more. There are complete strangers I see around town that I care about on a personal level more than I do Lance Briggs. I care about winning and being proud of the product we put on the field and off the field as well.

Maybe Briggs rushed out to buy a $350,000 ride to help bolster his chances of getting on MTV Cribs. He should make sure during the taping to mention on camera that despite the fact he has these nice sports cars, he has no idea how to drive any of them.

I am not a "hater" and have no interest whatsoever in the professional or financial downfall of Lance Briggs. I am just irritated with the fact he can make as much money as he does and be so careless. The more irresponsible acts we see from professional athletes today, the more it validates how easy they must feel it is to make these millions of dollars. Otherwise, we would see them be a whole lot more protective of their short term earning potential.

I wish everyone would immediately stop talking about this unless it's on the subject of how much cooler Lance is than all of us. I hate the jokes, and the media attention, and the whole freaking circus. Lance Lohan? You're not funny, you're a moron. Who cares if Lance wrecked his Murcielago? He didn't get hurt did he? If he had been hurt then it would be an issue because it would affect our season. If Goodell thinks he can suspend Lance for this I'm going to start the petition for his resignation. I don't care what football players do off the field one bit. If I just got 7.2 million I'd wreck a Lambo too.

The whole Mike Vick thing is unbelievably stupid as well. You're telling me that he has 300 lb. madmen trying to kill him for money every Sunday, and dogfighting is the most heinous thing ever? Get a life. We killed thousands of civilians in Iraq. Who the hell cares? I'm just irritated that I've been robbed of one of the most exciting players in the league by some dork who was never good enough to play so he just worked his little tail off up the corporate ladder and v'iola, he's commissioner. And why is Odell Thurmond suspended for another year? I think Goodell is a damn panzy and I don't want a squeaky clean league. I like it that Briggs was out at 3 am cruising in his Lambo. I don't like it that he wrecked it. Thank God he's ok, and that little brown-noser Goodell better not suspend him.

"Here's a man, who stood up to the Bears Management team. Spelled out his value and what he should be paid".

blackwise - that's some serious revisionist history.

What happened to his threat to sit out the season? to never play another down for the Bears? to never accept their 1 year offer? to sit out the first 10 games?

Lanced cowered like a little puppy who just peed on the rug. A few more accidents like this and he may have a tough time getting his money.

Car was crashed, but not totalled. There is a huge difference, no wonder he walked away without a scratch. Um thinking it was on fire or wrapped around a pole the way people were talking. He was incredibly stupid. After Tank, there is no excuse.

Culzie you are right - if it was Urlacher...folks would NEVER have known it - and he could have been in the car with 2 dead pit bulls and OJ.

Roman responds: Keith, you know Culzie was just being sarcastic, right? There would have been about 5 times the coverage if it were Urlacher.

We can speculate all we want, but this negative publicity is DEFINITELY gonna shake things up now. Probably for the better. If this man could call someone in the wee hours of the morning to retrieve him, which was probably the case, he should have done so a lot earlier. Was that a limp I saw at practice?

This is a tough one for me. I wonder, like Keith, if someone else was using the car and why there was no injury. As Keith said, the whole thing doesn't make sense. Maybe Julie is right on this one.One can speculate endlessly, but we probably won't know what happened until Lance writes his autobiography. Even then, he may be like Mark Twain, who said he only remembered the things that did not happen.

Roman I took him at face value. This society protects those they like. There are some people that things dont stick to.

Black Wiseman, since you obviously support Vick I will then assume you also support dogfighting. If that's the case you are obviously a sick and demented individual, and I suggest you get some mental help. As for Briggs standing up to management, WRONG! Briggs ran his mouth off about how he would never play for the Bears again or how he would sit out the first ten games of the season. Well, here he is playing for the Bears so it seems to me that Bears management slapped him around a little bit until Briggs got on his knees and begged to be a part of the team. Also, to echo what someone else said, I am not nearly stupid enough to ever spend a penny watching these lowlife felons play in the NFL. I would rather watch college football.

A report says the accident was really Rex Grossman's fault. Apparently, Grossman walked Lance Briggs to his car to make sure he made it home okay. And, he reached in to get the snap on Briggs' seat belt. But, Grossman didn't get his hands all the way in and the snap popped out later.

Clint Clack,

Just like you, I don't care what these players do off the field either, as long as it doesn't interfere with team goals. This episode, like it or not, interferes with team goals. Being out at 3am, whether you're caught or not, or get into an accident or not, interferes with team goals. You ever show up to work after being out that late? My guess is that you're not as sharp as you would be on a full night's sleep. Same goes for anybody in any line of work. If he got into a 1 car wreck in that type of car, there is a good chance he was screwing around with his new toy. If he would have gotten hurt in this accident, he then hurts his team and us as fans. Another possibility, one I suspect you haven't considered, is that he could have been in a multiple car wreck. What about when one of those other people he hurt or possibly even killed is someone close to you? Would you be as understanding of what he did? Would Goodell be a panzy for throwing the book at him? The idea of policing a league doesn't just apply to punishing people after something bad happens. It's about setting an expectation with all the players that this type of behavior is unacceptable as long as they're in the NFL. If reckless behavior does not result in death, injuries, or serious legal issues, then that does not mean Goodell has no reason to step in and do something. I imagine his goal is to set a clear expectation with players BEFORE something really bad happens. If in fact Briggs was drinking, his career might be over if he hit another car and someone was killed. Judging by the look of the car in those photos, I am guessing Lance Briggs was at the mercy of fate and should consider himself very very lucky. Being lucky, however, shouldn't prevent him from getting a slap on the hand at a minimum. I am very confident Briggs will get a short suspension for this and I think he should take it and run.

As for your comments on Vick, I truly feel sorry for you that were robbed of one of the most exciting players in the NFL. I hope you can manage this season without him. But please remember it was the court of law that is responsible for robbing you of that right to watch him (actually it was Vick himself). So don't blame the little dork who wasn't good enough to play in the league. Unless you played in the NFL yourself, by your estimation the only difference between you and Goodell is that he managed to climb that ladder and you didn't. I applaud Goodell for what he's doing right now. He's no brown-noser, actually quite the opposite. He's watching out for fans and making sure this great sport doesn't become the NBA, a league loaded with unbelievable talent that should be a way better overall product than it is. But the NBA represents itself terribly and has fallen far behind NFL and MLB in popularity and off the radar of a lot of sports fans like me. I can't stomach the thought of that happening in the NFL.

If you're think what Goodell is doing right now is leading us down a path to a squeeky clean league, do not worry. We are nowhere near that point.

Just wondering. How come Lance was driving when (from all reports) he had a suspended drivers license and several speeding violations on his record. Did he get a ticket for driving on a suspended license? So far I haven't seen or read that he did. If not,WHY?

Posted by: chitwn1 | August 27, 2007 11:26 PM

The guilty are guilty even before being proven guilty. "Innocent until proven guilty" only means that a person should not be punished by the legal system until they are proven guilty in court. It has nothing to do with discussing someone's probable guilt and obvoius stupidity.

To copout221 and common senseman, you guys have to much spare time, this story isn't that important. If you can't read between the lines, join other blogs about Gay rights or something. This issue is much more than a stupid car accident, that just involved a Bears player. It's about the constant attacks on Black athletes, off the fields of play. They are just Athletes not court appointed Judges or Attorney's. They are Human beings who make mistakes. African American's, Please read between the lines, don't get caught up in this O.J Simpson crap again.

blackwise--I'm going to assume your post was very, very, sarcastic, and laugh.

now i have the mental image of Brian Urlacher in a lamborghini murchielago with two fighting pit bulls and O.J. simpson hanging with him.

that's some funny stuff.

"Who cares if Lance wrecked his Murcielago? He didn't get hurt did he? If he had been hurt then it would be an issue because it would affect our season."

Nice to see your concern about the harm he could have inflicted on other people through his stupid antics.

"You're telling me that he has 300 lb. madmen trying to kill him for money every Sunday, and dogfighting is the most heinous thing ever?"

What's the point of that statement? Of what relevance is it that he has 300 lb. football players trying to tackle him on the football field, while off the field he's hanging dogs? What's the relationship? Are you trying to weight the relative criminality of his dog slaying vs. the loss of life in Iraq? I don't know anyone that says they don't care about the deaths occurring in Iraq. And how does the mentioning of deaths in Iraq make his felonious actions acceptable? Using that logic, I guess it's acceptable to rape a person as long as you don't kill them, as murder is the ultimate crime.

"I'm just irritated that I've been robbed of one of the most exciting players in the league by some dork who was never good enough to play so he just worked his little tail off up the corporate ladder and v'iola, he's commissioner."

Actually, the "dork" that robbed you of one of the most exciting players in the league was Mike Vick. You know, the "dork" that wasn't smart enough to avoid stupid things like, I don't know, dog fighting, executing dogs, financing gamblers, committing felonies . . . The "dork" that is not playing in the NFL because he's going to spend time in prison. Last I checked Godell didn't send Vick to prison. Perhaps if Vick was as smart as Godell he wouldn't have thought it a good idea to get into the dog fighting industry. Regardless, I guess I'd rather be a smart "dork" outside of prison than a stupid "dork" inside prison.

Well, as long as Lance is safe and can continue to entertain you once a week for the next few months, that's really all that's important anyway, right?

Top 5 Reasons Lance Brings Wrecked His Car:

5. To take NFL spotlight off Michael Vick

4. Tired of being referred to as "weakside" linebacker and wanted to toughen his image

3. To take tabloid spotlight off Lindsay Lohan

2. Was listening to Sammy Haggar's song, "I can't drive 55" and decided to put lyrics into action.

1. Can't read Italian and decided to see what "Reversimmo" gear does.

All kidding aside, I'm happy no one was injured.

Just finished reading Jay Marriotti's column re: Lance Briggs and I am sick and tired of the sports writing community expecting athletes to be choirboys. These people are trained to be assertive, aggressive and unrelenting in their pursuit of the opposition players. They are wired tight. Thisis what they get paid for. You expect them to turn on at noon on Sunday and turn off by 11pm. Just as soldiers, police officers and others in similar occupations often show their agressive tendencies after work, why do you think football players won't ? Or they will seek outlets like driving fast cars.

"I'm sure Mariotti will have something dumb to say about it tommorrow."

Right on the money. He's calling for a "franchise probe" by the Bears. I think Mariotti could use a "probe" of his own.

again i have to straighten you writers out , i feel just like woody , i think lance could sell his lambo for more than he paid before the incedent they ask you not to though and as far as the suntime article goes there are many vettes outthere with alot more than 400 horse the z06 has over 500 soplease ask somebody that knows a little something

===
Right! I was kidding, but Keiths post is PRETTY funny!

A report says the accident was really Rex Grossman's fault. Apparently, Grossman walked Lance Briggs to his car to make sure he made it home okay. And, he reached in to get the snap on Briggs' seat belt. But, Grossman didn't get his hands all the way in and the snap popped out later.

THIS IS GOOD N FUNNY!!

I READ IT OUTLOUD TO A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE!!

Black Wiseman, there is no constant attack on black athletes. The media just reports on the bad behavior of all athletes, and it just so happens to be that black athletes get into trouble far more often than white athletes.

Jeff is there anything in the universe more sick and demented than SLAVERY and GENOCIDE? Wonder how many of yall get sick about that? (some folks are so sick they proudly hang their confederate flags) Talkin bout some dogs! And I don't like that stuff either, but these dog reactions are off the chain - talk about cry me a river.

darly m - that was my OJ pit bull post. Just jivin. But umma tell you, folks will help a star out. I don't care if its Jordan or Urlacher or Payton. Folks will help them out and sweep thangs under the table. And umma keep it real again - just ask ANY Chicago cop! They let white folks go and give the brothers their tickets. I KNOW because one of my highschool buddies is a CROOKED Richard Gere-type Cop. He uses that badge like its an American Express Card. He has seen it all. Chicago PD - racist and rotten. Have to get some Northwestern Students to come get you out of jail - because those jokers decide to lock you up.

Is it me, or has Keith's Spelling and Grammer levels dropped way off, as he has taken on this PRO-VICK platform?

I am anti-genocide, and anti-slavery and anti-dog fighting They actually dont contradict each other. You can be all three!!!

Its the LAW Keith, its not like we are talking about wheter throwing an apple core out of your car window is littering or not, were talking about the Institution of Breeding/Stealing/Starving/Raping/Killing mass amounts of Mans best friend. (not chickens....keep that in mind) we are talking about MANS BEST FRIEND....we didnt just use that term lightly. Man wouldnt have been able to make it out of the jungle if we hadnt teamed up with Canines 20K years ago.

You can stop pretending to argue your case so vehemently...its over. the man was convicted, bringing up super powerful emotional words like Slavery and Genocide....are not going to win you any more votes. We all shed tears for Genocide....i have a www.savedarfor.org bumper sticker...(not on my car, but i have one).

Also, you kinda disproved your own point, cause you say a STAR would get this swept under the rug, but there was NO STAR in the HISTORY of ATLANTA sports bigger than VICK...so......(sound of you getting blown out of the water) what now??

Keith, your response was typical. Whenever blacks cry about racism they have to go back to the slavery times or some other ancient time in history which have nothing to do with what's going on today.

Roman responds: You're kidding, right?

Hey Roman, I'm curious; have you ever been asked to cover up a story or do you know any colleages that have been asked? Is there any stories out there that you would even consider? I could personally see myself not reporting Walter Payton's sickness for instance.

Roman responds: There some that are very hard to report on. I recently wrote one about a boxer who's accused of sexual assault over an incidents that happened when he was 11 and she was 8. The reason I did it is because when you cover someone or some team, you have to report on the good and the bad. The charges are current, and he faces 6-30 in the joint. I couldn't write about his future without reporting on that.

Thanks for responding. That is good stuff. Great integrity and balanced judgement. I asked because we read people all the time and know that the reporting is skewed. I asked YOU specifically because you police the blog with fairness.

Roman intentionally "covers up" some of my best posts!!! ;)

If Rex really did miss the "snap" again, maybe Briggs should take Olin K's place because he's more aware of the cosequences.

"JT, thanks for doing the math for all of us about your salary. It really added a lot to this topic. Call me a cynic, but I can't help but wonder if you labored over that 2 sentence post to try to make yourself sound like you make more money than you actually do"

Sean - sounds like I hit a nerve. Is your fries shift over?

J - how does slavery and genocide get mixed into this picture about Lance? I just met with a black woman who makes quite a bit more than I do - she appears to have weathered the storm.

"CROOKED Richard Gere-type Cop"
...is that lke Richard Gere a la "American Gigolo" or more like "Pretty Woman" Richard Gere.

J Richard Gere made a little movie called Internal Affairs. He played a cop that rivaled Denzel's Training Day character.

J I think I posted to the wrong blog about slavery and genocide. Folks were saying how sick some of the things that were done to Vicks dogs - and I was simply saying even worse was done to the slaves in America.

Culzie - you are right. Its ovah. But Vick was not a "beloved" Icon. Folks liked his game, but thats it. He didn't have the "Peyton Manning - I can run for office" appeal. Atlanta is one small market, but guys like Urlacher have Country-wide appeal, and not just for their talent. But even that only goes so far...I admit.

Jeff I understand how you feel. Tired of excuses and simply feel like there is no racism. And a whole lot of the younger people white/black feel the same way. There is a great disconnect. Its great because on one hand - that is what we all want in the end. Equality, and to be able to see someone like Barak Obama get elected. And then its bad on the other hand because our HISTORY has been erased as though nothing ever happened. Many still suffer from the effects of slavery - an there is a whole left over generation that are as racist as every. Jeff's comments are refreshing on one part. Jeff sounds young. I hope he is.

I wanna puke!!!

Keith says..."that is what we all want in the end. Equality, and to be able to see someone like Barak Obama get elected"

someone like? you mean...like how? like, skin color like? or liberal like? or tall? or do you mean HIM? or just someone LIKE HIM??

Shouldnt we vote for someone because of THEIR specific ideas and platforms, or just because they are "like" us.

I wonder if we would demand as much from the black president as we would a white one?? or would it be fair to lower our standards, like they do in some colleges?

kinda like affirmative action for presidents.

or...

we could actually vote for the best guy for the job.

I actually think OBAMS could be solid. but there are A TON of questions about him.

Not the least of which is this First Unity Church business.

Anyone wanna know what they are all about?? I can tell you!

me too...

Did you know that Barack is the name of Mohamads Horse? I think it was his stealthy, crafty horse, that got him out of a tricky spot or two.

OK bculz, I'm biting

"I wonder if we would demand as much from the black president as we would a white one?? or would it be fair to lower our standards, like they do in some colleges?"

Do you really think standards are lowered because of one's race? Give me stats, graduation rates, employment history, not just of african americans, but the whites they so called excluded. Talk about excuses, enrollment at most of the majority colleges is still not reflective of socitey's population. Most of the whites so called bumped were fringe students, and they blame Affirmative Action, forget the International students, or other factors.

Jeff,
Are you serious, think history does not affect the current situation. WOW!! Explains a lot!!!

Chuck, I simply just asked a question..., I didnt say yes or no.

You answered your own question though, how could there be "bump" students, if there was never any bumping?

Also, just because I thought I put this one to bed a while ago...but let me restate the super OBVIOUS...

NOT MATTER HOW MANY EXAMPLES YOU BRING UP....

Slavery does not shed ANY LIGHT what-so-ever on WHY Vick fought dogs.

Your Statement EXPLAINS ALOT however.

bculz,

Jeff said "Keith, your response was typical. Whenever blacks cry about racism they have to go back to the slavery times or some other ancient time in history which have nothing to do with what's going on today."

Tell that to the slave owners who still own large amounts of land down in the south off of the backs of slaves.

Just saying, Affirmative Action is not a lowering of standards of education by admitting more black people, the people who are accepted by the colleges would have been accepted anyway, their scores and grades would have made it anyway. Obama is not going to lower the standards of the presidency any less than the situation we are in now. I did not say slavery shed any light--couldn't explain it to you anyway in ten lifetimes. Plus, there is always "bumping" at colleges, universities, pro sports, college sports, job interviews, house rentals and purchases and the like.

The difference is, the government put a limit on how many African Americans you could "bump" and still get the federal funding, since the colleges could not get it right on their own.

im al for it, i had a great professor put it like this..

when you have two equal runners in a race, and they have to run a marathon. Then you shackle one of the runners legs. Then start the race, let them race for 2hrs, then take the shackles off the second runner will never catch the first runner. No matter how hard he tries, since they were originally equal. So, something has to be done in order to shrink that gap that was unfairly created.

I would agree. Not sure what should be done, but something should.

Not sure I dissagree with college letting in more cultural diversity, I agree with Jobs having to interview minorities, im for all of that at some level. i think these things have to be controled, and like you said, are not designed for Asian American Women to get scholarships, this was designed for Black Americans. So, thats who should get the hand up. Not sure about the other minorities....im really not.

Anyways...nothing kicks off College Football Saturday, like a little ethical dialogue about equality!!!!

Go Marshall!!!!!!

Black Wiseman, there is no constant attack on black athletes. The media just reports on the bad behavior of all athletes, and it just so happens to be that black athletes get into trouble far more often than white athletes.

You are a goofy for even saying that. The nerve of you. Man you must be on drugs or something. Rick Ankiel is caught receiving HGH, Giambi, Palmiero, etc. on steroids, Mc Guire on andro. College football player murders surfer. The whole Jena 6 fiasco. Mc Sorley slashes a hockey player after a game, all the legendary heroics of Babe Ruth and others. The baseball player for the Cardinals who ran the tow truck over and killed himself. I could go on.

Jeff, there are more white people in America. Over the past 150 years, there have been more white athletes in America. So, in your accurate history of the last 150 years, the majority of the white athletes are good citizens, and only when black athletes were allowed to play did these things happen (and let's not forget the referees). Read up on the so called "media reports" before you say something as stupid as that again!!!!! Hundreds of stories of wife beaters, murders, drunk drivers and the like (athletes, coaches, and their families--all white.)

Google Jena 6, Josh Hancock, hockey player murders surfer, mcsorley, tanya harding, and the like we see how white athletes do not commit any crimes.
