Sox trade Iguchi

| | Comments (52)

The Phillies have a temporary replacement for Chase Utley and the Sox got something - a minor-league pitching prospect - for Iguchi, who was going to be a free agent. It was a decent move for Ken Williams.

Decent ??? The Phils along with the Bsox and some other teams were looking to shore up thier middle infield. To settle for this minor leaguer is rough to take. I believe Williams could have received more in return.

Iguchi probably wasn't coming back, but Kenny Williams could have received more back in return. Hopefully Gooch will do well. As a Sox fan, I'll never forget his 3-run homer off David Wells in Game 2 division series against the BoSox!

Decent move for Williams? I don't know how you can possibly say that?
At this point for next year, you can add 2B to the following position player needs:
SS
LF
CF
RF
Entire bullpen

It kills me that Ozzie keeps trotting out that overweight bum Uribe, but they decide not to resign and trade Guch...

Yeah, decent move...in bizarro world

Roman responds: Look, you get a prospect and a chance to look at one of your own guys for an impending free agent. And you're not going anywhere. Where's the harm?

I like Iguchi. Good ball player. But we have a young hot shot second basemen in the minors who they want to bring up. Honestly, we don't know what will happen until you see the kid play. I would trade Thome back to Philly for Rowand and more prospects. Dye will be gone too. And Kenny Williams had better open up the check book in the off season to get us back on track.

I have nothing but foul language coming from my mouth for Kenny Williams right now. Iguchi was one guy who the White Sox could re-sign without breaking the bank and Kenny traded him away and recieved a guy who pitches in Class A. What happened to trading for Major League ready players? Iguchi is not himself this year but who on this team is? I hope The Gooch finds success and happiness in Philly for the rest of this season. Is Kenny Williams going to be the new GM of the Phillies in the future? What's next? The Phillies bat boy for Garland.

This Michael Dubee is also the son of the phillies pitching coach. He has 4 pitches and a very good SO to IP ratio 54 SO to 55 IP. He apparently has been used in relief for their A ball with 54 appearances and one save. I think he has a decent fastball. Anyhoo what I would like Kenny to do is now trade one or two pitching prospects for and I know I am probably sounding like a broken record but I bet Lance Broadway and this Dubee kid should get the Pirates to bite for Brian Bixler their AAA SS with speed to burn and a .387 OBP.

If the Sox had a lineup that included Danny Richar at 2B, Bixler at SS, Owens in CF or at least platooning and keep Pods in LF that would have 4 burners in the lineup. Richar steals less than the other 3 as he only has 8 SB's this year but he has line drive power and very good speed. How about this for a 2008 lineup:

LF Pods (when healthy one of the best leadoff men in baseball)
SS Bixler (put RH between 2 lefties might hit leadoff vs lefites)
DH Thome(should see lots of fastballs w/one of the above on base)
1B Konerko(hitting w/speed on the bases great way to avoid slumps)
3B Crede (batting 5th w/no back pain could get him to 120 RBI'S)
RF Fields (stops run of slow guys in lineup but still has power)
C AJ (could bat 5th or 6th sometimes vs tough righties)
2B Richar (at 8 LH also fast with power in the gaps)
CF Owens (2nd leadoff man very fast good bunter)

I know this lineup is assuming a couple of things like Crede bouncing back. I would like to bring back JD but who knows how that will fall. I have heard however that guys have recovered nicely from the type of back surgery Joe has had.

This lineup has speed to burn plus 2 right handed and 2 left handed clutch hitters, 3 of which have a legit shot at 30+ HR's. I believe this is a nice mix of youth and veterans power and speed and a reasonably tight defense. Joe at 3rd helps every pitcher on the staff.

Roman responds: The Sox get Dubee, but they also get a chance to take a good look at their own infield prospect, Danny Richar.

Sox fans I wouldnt get in too much of a lather about trading Iguchi because as far as I can tell Kenny and Pat Gillick the phillies GM seemingly have one of those if you scratch my back I will scratch yours type of relationships. I suspect that Kenny curried a favor with Gillick for bailing him out with a decent replacement for Utley while he is injured. Lets see if these two guys make another trade down the road that helps out the Sox the way this one should help out the phillies. Also like Roman says the sox can see if Richar can hit MLB pitching this year and if not maybe they resign Tadahito. The more Kenny knows about Richar as he goes into the off season the better it is for our team. This is almost like a setup trade for another move in the sense that if Richar bombs at the MLB level than he wont be their A optoin for 2B in 08. If he does well then thats less guesswork and one hole filled for their off season manuevers.

What do people honestly think we could get for Iguchi this season??? You are trading a player who is not going to re-sign and is hitting .250. Stop drinking the black and white kool-aid, no one is going to give up 'ready' talent for that. Even though I love Iguchi and what he has done for this organization, I don't like his lack of range at 2B either. Richar coming up is a great thing, if he pans out, we have our 2B for the next 5 years, if not we sign a veteran for a year or two, and that solves a question that would have weighed heavy on KW during the offseason. He can then focus on other things!

We need to understand that the championship window has closed on the veterans on this team (Thome, Dye, Iguchi, Contreras, Pods). Those guys are all on the downslopes of their careers and we need to get as much as we can on the trade market for them. Hopefully with the rash of injuries throughout the league this year, some teams will overpay (crossing my fingers on contreras), and help restock our farm system. However, it looks as if GMs are much more conservative this year with the deadline approaching, and that stinks for us (remember the rumor that we offered Contreras and McCarthy for AJ Burnett and WERE TURNED DOWN?) If we want bullpen help, we will either have to spend big in the offseason, or rebuild through prospects, there isn't much of another option.

Let's just wait and see. The player that they are bringing up is hitting .350 in AAA ball and Iguchi’s agent even said that him resigning with the White Sox after the season was not out of the question.
Let's face it. They are going nowhere right now and they have one decent player in the minors and this is the guy.
They have to see if he is for real because any retooling for next year will have to come through trades or free agency.

I see Ozzie is forwarding Factory Workers' emails to Kenny...

I'm gonna send him one and call him an onomatopoeia...watch him freak out....Sizzle, Sizzle, Buzz, Splash, Kerplunk my Venezuelan buddy...

Tell him he has the brain the size of a pea...call him hyperbole...

and Philtration...is that true...The Sox have "one" decent player in the minors?

Geez, the Cubs darn near have an entire ball club they could bring up and compete

"I really wanted to stay here in Chicago," Iguchi said through a translator. "I had no idea something like this was going to happen. On the other hand, it's a great feeling there is a team that has a need for me and I am really honored." CLASS

I am sorry, but I don't care what Iguchi was doing this season. You don't trade an major league player for a Class A prospect. Unless this guy is a can't miss prospect. I don't see the point of trading for a guy selected in the 18th round. Round 18 doesn't sound like a can't miss prospect to me. This is what I was afraid of, trading under achieving players for crap.

From USA today
"A very disappointing return for the White Sox, who must have wanted to go to Danny Richar pretty badly. Dubee had a 3.88 ERA and a 54/22 K/BB ratio in 55 2/3 innings of relief for low Single-A Lakewood. The White Sox would have been a lot better off getting draft picks in return for Iguchi, but that wasn't possible, as they were going to be prevented from offering him arbitration."

Keep in mind that Williams is the same talent "genius" who made a point of bringing in and touting such "hot young arms" as Sisco, Masset, Floyd and Aardsma, none of whom have done squat with the Sox so far. Why would we think Kenny will all of a sudden get smarter with the choice of Dubee???????

We Sox fans have to admit that KW got lucky in '05; he took over a playoff team and missed the playoffs for the next 4 years, and now for the last 2. A genius, he ain't.

Hitman... yes the Sox have one really good postion player in the minors.
As far as the Cubs having an entire team that they could bring up... what are you smoking tonight?
They can not even keep Felix Pie in the big leagues and they had to shell out big money for so-so players like Jacque Jones and Mark Derosa.

Dan - you're right! That said it all.

To Gooch's credit, he admitted he was shocked, but looked at the bright side. Besides, Gooch's contract ends this year, so he could always resign if this other kid isn't ready.

Speaking of re-sigining, don't be surprised to see Aaron Rowand back with the Sox next year. He too has an expiring contract and has talked about coming home.

db

I hate to see gooch go, but these are the woes of free agents. When you have stars on your team, you are going to have to make some sacrifices like the Bears with Briggs. Only in this case, the Sox have so many under acheivers this year.

Hey Hitman, you caint send Ozzie a word like that. I thought it was hippopotomus! You are right about the Cubs farm. They have some good young talent. Gooch, Rowand, Korneko, and Crede was that when the Sox made their run.

Dubee doobie doo... ? A single "A" pitcher for a mlb starting second baseman ?It seems sox could of at least got a AAA pitcher in return? Dubee may help in a few years but he's at least 5 years away from any impact from trade. Not a big Iguchi fan, he had a average at best bat & played defense with alligator arms. Kenny pretty much gave Iguchi away for nothing. Sox must improve club at several positions. Getting a pitcher who's not gonna help at all or at least in near future makes no sense.

Tom
With our bullpen, that lineup you penciled in might not be as good as KC...

A bad trade by KW. Realyy should have got more than a minor league pitcher from A ball. Who next is the question. Dye for I'm almost afraid to ask. And who is DuBee. Should we ask, which DuBee are you be? wait till next year!

Roman, help me out here. Didn't the latest CBA make it easier for teams to sign their own free agents in the off-season? If that's the case then I don't think we should rule out the possibility of Iguchi returning if Richar struggles.

To the fans saying they could have gotten more take a look at the lack of trade activity around the league right now. That's mainly because the contenders have better options in-house than having to make a trade.

Assuming Iguchi finishes strong he's probably looking at a min of a 3-4 yr deal in the range of 6-7mil. The CWS can afford that.

Roman responds: It's possible, but I don't see it.

With JD really heating up the Sox could trade him and still sign in the off season while picking up some prospects. It looks to me like the Angels and Boston are the likliest destinations for JD. I for one am pulling for the braves to win the texeria sweepstakes to make it easier for Kenny to play boston and the angels against each other for JD. BTW the one game I saw JD play at !B he looked like he had been there a long time so Boston could play him a lot at 1B and JD when he is going good is better than JD Drew.

If the Sox could get Ervin Santana and Brandon Wood SS that would be a very good deal IMO for the Sox.

In a trade with Boston I would love to get Ellersby CF with his super speed and a pitching prospct which of course will not be Clay Bucholz but might be Craig Hansen. I wonder if Kason Gabbard is at all available for JD after he beat the White Sox about a week ago.

Roman responds:

RSVP, Roman.

Would you please list Williams success record with pitching "prospects" since he has been in charge?

As Jeffrey said, it just adds another position as a significant question mark for next season.

That's the harm.

And, while I have nothing against Jim Thome, how much money is tied up with an aging one-dimensional guy who has not been able to help the Sox the way he was expected to, despite good numbers?

I wonder who's gonna get the first hit off Dubee? Sorry, I couldn't resist that one - too easy! Incidentally, Barry's homer last night was 420'.

I think this was a good move by Kenny. It gives us a chance to look at Richar at 2nd and maybe ss(I heard that somewhere) and gets Iguchi into the playoffs and review before National League Teams before he comes on the market this winter. I wonder how Fielder would do at first base? Just a thought.

Just read that one of the possible reasons the rumored Dye to Bosox trade didnt happen yet was Kenny wanted a player he couldng get and possibly that player was the silver surfing Jacboy Ellsbury who is score from 2nd on a wild pitch fast. Now Kenny and I havent been seeing eye to eye lately except for the Buehrle signing so I want to take the opportunity to say go Kenny go get that speed demon on the White Sox. Also rumored to be the 3rd team in the trade was the phillies with michael bourn as the 3rd player in the Bosox deal. This makes me wonder if I wasnt right about Kenny and Gillick doing an I'll scratch your back if your scratch mine with the Iguchi trade with Gillick helping out as the 3rd team Gillick's part.

Right now JD's trade value should be peaking especially with the Angels faltering and thats a team where JD would fit like a glove. If I was Kenny I would give up on the Willy Jo Pena part of the deal and almost go for a straight Ellsbury for JD move but really the Bosox need to also throw in a 2nd tier pitching prospect with Ellsbury for Dye. From the Angels I would sure take a flyer on the 23 year old Ervin Santana as part of a deal for JD and another prospect possibly Brandon Wood a AAA SS or another of their pitching prospects. I am hoping that Texeria goes to the Braves because that would just about force the Angels to pay a decent price for JD. If the Sox were to get Ervin Santana they might win the trophy for franchise with the most starting pitchers with major league stuff. If you include Gavin Floyd as having major league starting pitching stuff and Gio Gonzalez with the 142 SO's in AA ball and figure Nick Masset is just about there as a major league starter as he is starting in AAA, that would be like 9 major league starters. This list doesnt include guys on the cusp such as Jack Eggbert who also dominated in AA as a starter and the roller coaster Andrew Sisco who has gone his last 2 starts at AAA 5 innings each of no run ball. Now if we could only find someone who can handle the 8th inning.

if kenny williams was so intent on seeing what richar can do in the majors, why not just call him up from the minors and send one of the pitchers down.

all spring it was no mystery that of our prime free agent targets -- iguchi, dye, and buerhle -- iguchi could be re-signed cheaply. the idea that we can give richar a shot at 2b and if he fails we can re-sign guch over the winter is a pipedream. why would he come back, especially if he has decent numbers in philly. and without iguchi on the roster, do you really think that williams will only be given the rest of this season to prove he can pan out? if we're giving him this opportunity now, the sox will definitely give him every opportunity in spring training next season as well.

good luck iguchi. i'll wear you sox jersey proudly.

Who?

Well --The Sox traded Iguchi. He was having a bad year, and they werent going anywhere. They got a pitcher from A-Ball.18th rounder!
They say they wanted to see the kid Richar.OK Guess what?Rheinsdorf saved $1,000,000 on the rest of Iguchis salary. That kid pithcher didnt mean anything.Lets see if Williams can unload Pods and some of the other derilects and get something for them.
He likes to pick people like Dye& Thome of the scrap heap for a cheap price and gamble--Sometimes it works.Lets see if Kenny can find a GM like himself, and make a deal--if not for prospects or players ,to free up some money and get some Players like Lee,Ramierez, and Soriano. If they want top keep the Sox in Chicago they have to turn this around. That means make good decisions, and spend real money!I hope Williams can do it>--If Rheinsdorf lets him!-----Frank

Only one ripping - Tg Special. When Ozzie used the term "factory workers", he was referring to uninformed people like yourself. Even if you wanted to just trade Thome for Rowand and 2 prospects, you have to consider the fact that Thome can't do anything for the Phillies except pinch-hit. They don't want him. The reason we got him in the first place was that there was no room for him on the field there. Ever hear of Ryan Howard? Or the "there's no freakin DH in the National League" rule?

Tom Pappalardo - I'm impressed to see someone else on this board with a good knowledge of other farm systems. I like the idea of stealing Bixler from the Pirates...it sure seems like something an organization as dumb as they are would do. Broadway is a flop.

However, Ellsbury is worth WAY more to the Red Sox than a rental of Jermaine Dye, and that deal is NOT happening. It would be a great trade for Williams if he found a way to pull it off, but a straight-up swap screws the Red Sox, not the White Sox. J.D. Drew has been bad, but it's reasonable to think he'll rebound a little.

Similarly, Brandon Wood, Baseball Prospectus's preseason ranked #5 prospect in baseball, is not something the Angels are just going to concede for a faltering Jermaine Dye, regardless of Ervin Santana being in the trade, and regardless of their desperation for power in the lineup. That would be the steal of the year.

Your lineup, however, needs Jerry Owens weeded out of it (Anderson, Sweeney, and Terrero are all better options). He's a slappy hitter with speed and an uninspired glove. The man is destined to be a 5th outfielder at best. Basically, Owens is a poor man's Scott Podsednik. Podsednik, himself, is not "when healthy one of the best leadoff men in baseball". When Podsednik is healthy, he puts up an OBP a tad above average with zero power, and he hasn't stolen bases at a profitable success rate since the first half of 2005, which nets you a mediocre-to-below-average player. And that's assuming he's healthy, which as we all know, is a tough assumption to make. Podsednik was arguably the most overrated player in baseball in 2005. All-in-all, the lineup you've posted (which I admit is creative, and would be one of the best ones we can put out there, sadly) exemplifies the primary fault with the way the White Sox trade, scout, and draft: they overrate baserunning speed, causing them to sacrifice defense, power, and OBP (all of which are way more important).

Trading Iguchi was a no-brainer. Sure I would like to have gotten more, but there was no market for the guy. I didn't want Iguchi resigned so why would we keep him here? He was a big part of 2005 and I liked him as a player. But when you look at Iguchi it's hard to rate him very high among 2B. He's showing little to no speed. He is (at best) average defensively w/ below average range. He has slightly above average pop for a 2B but that's not what the Sox need from him. He does not hit for average and is nowhere near the situational hitter he was 2 years ago. Why would we hold onto him? I would much rather take a shot at giving the job to Richar for the next few months and see what he can do. If it works out, the Sox will save a few million per year at 2B. Before people start thinking a few million is no big deal, consider that 2 or 3 million is a nice salary for a proven setup guy. People are going to slam me for saying this, but I had similar feelings when Rowand was traded. I was wondering why everyone was so concerned about losing a guy that at the time looked pretty lost offensively (yes, I know he's played well in Philly since). I just can't imagine losing Iguchi like we did will come back to haunt us, even if Richar is a huge bust.

Why so many WhiteSox threads?

Cubs are about to take control of the Division, we have two guys in the MVP hunt and a lock for the CyYoung.

Anyone see Z man yesterday?? I repeat, iguchi who??

Here is a real story...

Give another 'A' to 'Z'
Ace becomes majors' first to 14 wins, pulls Cubs half-game back of first

July 30, 2007
BY GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com
CINCINNATI -- If the Milwaukee Brewers are going to win the National League Central, they might have to pry it out of Carlos Zambrano's right hand.

The Cubs' ace continued his two-month Cy Young charge Sunday in Cincinnati, pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings to beat the Reds 6-0 at Great American Ball Park and become the first 14-game winner in the majors. Zambrano also pulled the Cubs a half-game back of the division-leading Brewers in the process.

''This is the best stretch I've ever had in my career,'' said Zambrano, who is 9-2 with a 1.41 ERA in his last 11 starts.

I've heard Willie Mo Pena may be included in a deal for Dye...just what we need, another injury-prone outfielder who can't hit.

bculz, I liked that article too, but we still have a lot of games left, and the ever-dangerous Cardinals are pulling their usual end-of-the-season thrust. I'm glad the Cubs are only half a game back, but would have preferred that a team other than the Cards had made it happen. They still scare me. Things do look rosy at this stage. Go Cubs and Bears!

bculz... thats chicago sports for you, fans always have more to say when a team is doing bad.

I don't love the return we got, but getting Richar on the major league team and seeing what he can do was an essential move.

One thing is for sure, I've always had immense respect for Iguchi. Always a great pro, I will miss his presence on the team.

His play last year when he was falling over and threw horizontal to the ground was one of the finest I've ever seen. And of course his bomb against the Red Sox was huge in White Sox history. Thanks Gooch!

LOL Agreed!

Sean Tunney - Good call on Iguchi being a poor defender. He definitely is, and that one play last year where he made a nice stop and submarined the ball to first base blinded the world to it. He was involved in less double plays than any 2B in baseball last year. The Sox pitchers last year got a decent amount of ground balls, and I really don't think that the blame can fall anywhere but on Iguchi considering that Crede and Uribe were the gloves and arms on the other side of the infield.

So yeah....Jerry Owens is very, very bad at baseball. Even if Brian Anderson hits the way he did in the first half last year, we'd be better off with him simply by merit of his glove (+11 FRAA in 2006). And that's not to mention Sweeney and Terrero being way better options. So yeah. Get him out of the major leagues.

Noles, Jerry Owens is getting better. He is finding a way to help the team and use his speed. All of those numbers go out the window because he is giving us a much needed spark at top of the lineup NOW. He is making the most of his time at the big leagues and that trumps everything. I bet if you run his numbers during this little run we are on and you would be surprised. And its not just being a spark, but doing it in clutch situations. You don't have to do much to stand out this year. He is seizing his opportunity.

Brian Anderson was given EVERY chance and he was flat out AWFUL, and I mean an automatic out everytime up. Ozzie kept him up for at least a year. I buy the rest of the argument concerning Sweeney and Terrero, but Brian Anderson was brutal. And he was supposed to be the next big star. He has a sweet glove, but that bat is an icesickle. And we have already been the northpole offense this year and could not afford to bring in frosty the snowman.

Sox fans need to get over their 'Pods' fixation. Are you kidding me, did you see that ball he missed two days ago. They should dress him up like Peter Pan. He's a little 'wall-shy'.
And ever since Garland admitted that he has that 'knot' in his shoulder that he may have to deal with for the rest of his career - he hasn't been the same pitcher. Garland is damaged goods. So maybe K-Dub will trade him, like Sirotka and Garcia.

Ill have a big slice of humble pie please?

Iguchi...killed the Cubs yesterday....so..I guess I now know who he is :(

Yesterday, Iguchi and Rowand made a darn good use of their bats. Go guys!!

Keith Lifetime Southsider,

I admire your fanship and love of the White Sox, but you have to accept that numbers mean something. Brian Anderson was flat out awful for most of last year, yes, but he was also flat out "better than Jerry Owens is today". Anderson has a higher ceiling as a prospect than Owens, who is merely a poor slap hitter that can run. Anderson is MUCH better in the field, and can actually drive the ball with power.

The burden of proof is on you that Owens provides some sort of "spark". I can tell you're taking in every word that Hawk and DJ say on the air, and let me tell you, they made sure I was wrong about the way I thought about baseball for 7 years (now I know they're clueless "Christian Guzman is a tough out" LOLOLOLOLOLOL). This whole idea of a "spark" is one-hundred-percent touchy-feely anecdotal BS. Just because you can run doesn't mean you belong anywhere near the top of the lineup. You need to get on base, too, and Jerry Owens is one of the very worst players in baseball at that. Even freaking Podsednik would be a better choice. I never thought I'd say this, because of how below average he is despite what everyone says, but I miss Darin Erstad. I really do. At least he's capable of playing at a level above AAA.

Noles you are the man when it comes to those stats. I wouldn't second guess you brotha. But you know baseball is about more than stats. Its timing and luck, etc. Jerry is doing it at a time when we need every base runner we can possibly muster. He is standing out and the offense is sparked by him. I like Anderson, but he didn't bring it when he had his chance. The best guy is not always the one who is on the team; its the guy who shines when you need him to. Time will tell the truth about Owens and Anderson. If you stink, it will show. If you are a great player, how can you be held back?

Owens is also stealing so many bases Ozzie needs a lojack to keep up with him.

Garbage time has officially started for our sox. You can't put a whole lot of stock in what these hitters are doing now since the season is essentially over.
Anyone remember Harry Chapas? He made an SI cover for being 5'1" and hitting over .300 in garbage time like this.
Good to see Ozzie is still trotting out our overweight, under-performing SS every night.
What a mess...

Jeffrey, not only overweight and under-performing, but also confused at the plate and totally downhill. Jose made two sparkling plays to end the Word series, but that's all in the past now. It is time to get a new shortstop and see how this free fall can otherwise be stopped, or the Sox will become the URSS of baseball, if it hasn't happened by now.

I admit, its weird having every team in chicago heading for the playoffs but my beloved WhiteSox.

Yankees are putting on a show! Its painful, but they were as bad last year as we are now. There is hope. Never thought in a million years we would be the ones saying "we'll get em next year".

I thought JD was a gonner. All you can say is go CUBS, BULLS, BEARSz!

What stumps me is sox minor league pitching.
Even the obvious poor result in the bullpen[mainly from bad trades]is less than the poor outcomes of the White Sox pitchers who are currently in the Bigs like Josh Fogg, McCarthy, Kip Wells, etc. What is with the Sox farm system????

Floyd pitched a gem today! If that is how he is going to pitch, we have a New Starter! Richar also looked good. The kid has a good defense, a decent bat and good speed. Josh Fields and Jesse Owens seem to be sticking. Especially Fields who have made us to pretty much forget about Crede who has been missing for a long time. Bullpen has seemed to settle down. I was nervous after McDougal gave up that dinger to Maggs, but it was Maggs so he gets a pass. McDougals body language is the worst I ever seen after a home run.
