March 2007 Archives

I write a column every two weeks called "Fightin' Words." It's about the combat sports of boxing and ultimate fighting http://www.suntimes.com/sports/320357,CST-SPT-fite30.article. I think the UFC is the hottest sports body out there. Some of my co-workers scoff, so let me know what you think.

Prediction time

Ok, enough Lance, it's baseball season. Give me your Div. winners, wildcard entries, LCS winners and World Series winners. And also tell me how the Cubs and Sox will do.

Lance for the No. 6?

| | Comments (130)

ESPN.com is reporting that Drew Rosenhaus is trying to leverage a deal sending Lance Briggs to the Redskins for a swap of draft picks, giving the Bears the sixth pick instead of the 31st. Is that enough?

So Kerry Wood was upset with Lou Piniella for his strategy of wanting pitchers to work a certain number of innings over a certain number of days before being ready to break camp. Then Wood gets hurt - again, and as Sun-Times new Cubs beat writer Gordon Wittenmyer reported exclusively today, Wood's ready for the DL again http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/313075,CST-SPT-cub26.article.

During a timeout, there's no coach you want diagramming a play more than Scott Skiles. He's a motivator and a great Xs and Os guy. But do players want to play for him? And can he take the Bulls to a championship level?

I'm pretty sure I predicted before the season the Bulls were going to make the NBA Finals. Still a possibility, but so is one-and-done. Still look a player short, don't they?

Kerry Wood and Mark Prior

I'm not sure whether I feel sorry for them or am just happy they're going away.

It's been a few days, and the Bears have managed to stay out of the news. Congrats.

Tank's odyssey continues

Tank Johnson got 120 days in jail for violating his probation on a 2005 gun case. He'll be back for training camp. He could have received a full year. Does the punishment fit the crime? I believe it does.

Lance, Lance, Lance

Apparently, Lance Briggs didn't like the level of media attention his last contract whine created. The Bears replaced him as the main back page story the last time by trading Thomas Jones. This time, it's just not as newsworthy http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/294453,CST-SPT-bear13.article.

What's your Final Four?

I'm going with Ohio State, Florida, UCLA and my long shot is a nod to a coach I covered for three of the worst seasons I've ever seen a coach endure - USC.

Kenny Williams has something up his sleeve, and it could turn out to be a very popular move for Sox fans http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/289932,CST-SPT-sox09.article.

I have mixed emotions. The most important thing to me is not raising taxes to pay for Olympic venues. I heard cities that have hosted the Games actually have lost money.

Another day, another Bears PR hit. The Bears traded Thomas Jones to the Jets for a second-round pick, which will be the No. 37 overall. Lance Briggs, meanwhile, wants to be the next one to leave.

Here we go again. This time, Ozzie's tirade was directed at Brandon McCarthy. Who's next?
