What should Bears do with Tank?

| | Comments (74)

Another weapons violation? Should the team wait for the league to act or act on their own and sit Tank Johnson out for Sunday's game.

They should kick his ass off the team. Anyone that stupid or selfish, whichever you'd prefer, that not only breaks the law but VIOLATES HIS PROBATION doesn't deserve to play in the NFL.

I don't think they should, or are going to kick him off the team. However they should suspend him for one game asap.

As much as I want to be accepting and forgiving--Tank needs to go. Why a 300-pound man who most certainly does not live anywhere near anyone who might not realize who he is and try to rob him, who is currently on probation for an identical charge feels the need to have SIX FIREARMS in his home is beyond me.

Oh, wait. It's because he's an idiot.

Even putting aside the legality of his behavior--having so many weapons without a license during a season like this is not only stupid, it's selfish.

They should cut him and take his salary back. Or bench him and trade him for a draft pick to spend on another defensive back (go Angelo!)

Get rid of him immediately! THREE arrests since he joined the team?? THREE!!! That means Tank is selfish and will only hurt the team. He is gifted and fortunate to be a professional athlete. But clearly he is too dumb and selfish to be a champion.

if the bears had any guts and if they are serious about character issues then tank johnson should never play again for the bears.

Bears players seem to have an attitude that they don't care what the fans and media think and they can do what they like. It starts with the coach, how he blows off questions with repetative platitudes and cliches, rex is our quarterback, we like tank, we're 11 and 2 why should i respond to your stupid questions or worry if our players conduct reflects well on the bears or the city. It must be nice to be so important and self satisfied, i guess bear fans and chicago area residents don't really matter to these guys.

As a Bears fan, I say innocent until proven guilty. With Tommie Harris down the Bears need Tank desperatly. For a run at the superbowl the Bears can not lose anyone else on a already suddenly suspect defense.

As a human being, "What is wrong with these guys?" What does Tank Johnson need with guns, let alone 1 gun legally owned. This is another stain on the season and will be if the Bears do go anywhere. We will have to let it play out, but I think tank can be on the next plane out of town.

My belief is that,if you keep allowing a person to get away with certain things that are not right they will keep doing it.So put a stop to it right now!! Football is just a game.I am a die hard BEARS FAN, but as a bear fan I look up to alot of the players, and alot of the kids may pride thierselves on growing up to be just like some players. So before it's to late I bekeive that the Bears and NFL need to show not only the players but the kids that look up to these players, that NOONE is above the law and there are consequences for our actions bad or good!!!

Let's take a deep breath. First the guns were in his house. How many of you out there have guns in there house?? Second, he wasn't there when the raid was conducted. So why are comming down on him so hard?? Third, we have no idea who the other people are and why they were there. So come on people let's at least wait until more information is available before we crucify this person.

I can read and tell you people have no idea. Tank had guns with no gun card. The charges are not felonies. Rich white guys collect guns and there is no problem. The guy has guns, we never heard of him using one on a person. Should he have a gun card, yes but plenty of rich older white guys get guns without gun cards but they arent a big black guy that whites fear so a lot doesn't get made of it. You guys are calling the man idiots. Don't be a coward and do that unless you are willing to do it to his face. Why would police raid his place, I don't think it was to find guns that were never used in any type of crime. Rich young & black = being a target for police. This is nothing less than another case proving such. Kick him off the team? Why? He hurt no one, only likes guns like a lot of other people and they weren't even in the man's car. They were in is home people. Get off your high horse and stop butchering the guy cause he's a big rich black guy you would be scared of on the street, and now you know he likes guns. Just cause he's big and black doesn't make him a bad guy only a target!!!!

I understand people being upset with Tank for a number of violations over the past year & 1/2. What i dont understand is everyone on their high horse saying we should get rid of him. So is that how you deal with employees when they are dealing with difficult or even dangerous situations in their lives?? Come on people have some commmon sense & some hope. Companies should be responsible for doing everything they can to support & help their workers, especially when they are in need. I am selfish in that I want to win the superbowl & think we need tank - now with Tommie out. But I also think of Tank as a part of the Bears & a Chicago person who needs some help right now- if you need to sit him out a game, fine but dont kick him to the side while he is down! How would any of you feel if it was someone in your family- wouldnt you want to get help for him/her before just pushing them off on someone else? Dont allot of young people make mistakes & come back to be good citizens? We give these athlets all this money & praise when they are still very young & most have come from difficult backgrounds & then if they screw up you just want to get rid of them. give me a break.

Do nothing. Let the legal system handle it and then the league can enforce punishment if he is found guilty. I am not going to pretend I know exactly what the circumstances are based on media reports. If they let him out on $1000 bond (that he only had to pay 10% of) and it is a misdemeanor, is it really that serious? Legal issues aside I have a problem, not with the fact he has six guns (that would make 99% of the population up here in WI criminals, including myself), but with the fact that some were loaded and accessible with young children in the house. That is just stupid.

My guess is the raid was never about his guns, it's just that it's Tank Johnson and he is a Chicago Bear and they were his guns. If the cops raided his house and arrested his buddy for felony possession of pot, more than likely he had a TON of it in the house and maybe the was dealing and that was why the raid went down. White, black or otherwise, that is a problem. And when it comes to the guns, yes he is an idiot. I don't have a problem with people having guns, but leaving them out and loaded when there are little kids around is just moronic. And, given the fact he is on probation for a firearms charge takes the level of stupidity beyond comprehension. If this had happened to any of us, our probation would've been revoked and we would have been in prison before we had a chance to watch the game this weekend.

The guy has obvious problems, and part of me wonders given the arsenal he had in his house that he was fearful of his life from somebody -- probably related to whatever his friend was into. As far as what the Bears should do? I don't know, but someone else mentioned an employer standing behind their employee. So the question becomes, if one of us got busted for the third time in 18 months and was in violation of our probation, what would our company do? I know what mine would tell me: "See ya, and don't let the door hit you on the behind as you walk out."

The guy had six guns in his home? Big Deal! What you have here is a bunch of grandstanding policemen looking for some cheap publicity. And for you morons who say you and your kids look up to football players, grow up! Being a professional athlete just means you have freakish physical talent, nothing more . Most of the ones I've met are stupid and arrogant.

Thank you James Rhone for putting a little perspective on this. A misdemeanor was committed, possibly, by Tank. In many states this wouldn't be a crime at all. Tank had unregistered guns in his house. Big deal. what is more disturbing to me is that over 20 police officers conducted a raid to find unregistered guns. what were they really looking for? Is there a neighbor out there in gurnee who doesn't want a black man living in their area who is making false accusations to get Tank out? What did the Confidential informant tell the police that would cause a raid of this magnitude? Something here stinks. That is not to say that it wasn't dumb to have these guns in his home, but it is a crime more similar to not regitering your car than driving drunk.

The overreaction by sports writers and some fans to the raid on Johnson's home is quite amazing. Kick him off the team? Are you kidding? For what? Having a few weapons in his house when he was not supposed to?

Granted that Tank Johnson is guilty of breaking his parole for having guns. But anyone living in Chicago with a gun in their house is equally guilty of breaking the law since it is illegal to own a weapon to defend yourself in Chicago. Mayor Daley has his own private army to protect him and his family but the average citizen of Chicago is prevented, by law, to arm themself for personal protection in their own home.

I am not concerned about Tank Johnson having guns in his house without having a gun permit card. I am concerned why the police felt compelled to enter his house with a task force and trash his house while looking for what? I am thinking that the police are very thankful that they were able to find the guns and the friend with some illegal smoking material to semi-justify their attack . Otherwise, the police would have come up empty and the focus would be on them to explain why they felt it necessary to trash the house especially with a woman and two small kids being there? This attack by the police would be worthy of a terrorist not a highly public sports figure.

A simple court order to search the premises by a couple of cops would have accomplished the same thing as this outrageous gastapo invasion of Tank Johnson's home. Again, I say that I do not care about the guns found in the house. If the powers that be feel it neccessary to throw Johnson under the bus and crucify him for having them, so be it. But I do care about knowing why the police action taken was deemed warranted by the law officials in charge!

This information should be revealed as soon as possible. If it is not, then I believe a full investigation should be made into the reasons for the police action at Johnson's house. To think that this type of police action could happen to anyone who owns an unregistered gun for home protection is a very frightening thought!

He is on probation for having a loaded gun at a nightclub. He was given a break on another incident probably because he was a Bear. I urge the Bears to be coldly pragmatic: keep him in for the playoff run and then ship him off for whatever draft picks they can get for the head case.

The chief of police in Gurnee is a PACKERS fan. Really I live near Gurnee and we have a lot of Packer fans. Go into the Piggly Wiggly in Zion on Sundays and they are all wearing Packers stuff. Honestly, Gurnee is not popular for a lot of stuff. Tank stick out like a sore thumb. I thought we had a right to bear arms. They act like they were barracaded in the house and were waiting for trouble. The bust was suppose to be about drugs and the amount they found ON the other guy was enough for a couple of joints. They act like he was dealing or something like that. They can be overeager in these communities and I think the blogs from BEARS FANS,JONES RHONE and PATRICK MORGAN is correct compared to the ones saying get rid of him just like that. All these violations are against the constitution: innocent until proven guilty and a right to bear arms. Now locked and loaded, that's another thing. But I won't pass judgment that fast like I didn't pass judgment on T.O. in regard to his supposed suicide. My job should haven't any right to fire me because of what happens to me on my own time. Now if he was out shooting people-lock him up. But that wasn't the case. All I know is when I pass through Gurnee I mind my Ps and Qs and don't go over the speed limit because they don't play out here. Before anyone say I shoudn't speed, who among you do the exact speed all the time. If you're in the wrong they'll find you. Man, I gotta pass through there today. You never know;the guy who sold him one of the guns might've turned him in. I have to wonder why this misdemeanor warranted so much attention. I don't have any guns but if I did and wasn't shooting people who would I be hurting? I'm not the least bit worried about guys like Tank Johnson harboring weapons. Maybe, the friends that smoke dope. But who doesn't have some friends who are recreational. I don't but I know plenty of people who do. And that's their business. I'm more worried about the guy in my subdivision who has a dog named the N___ word. I kid you not. My son is still scarred about him calling his dog to come home. Now,that's whats wrong with this world. I think he's a Packer fan, too. GO BEARS!!!

Roman responds: Too bad your neighbor doesn't live next door to Tank.

So wat. Gunz r cool

So no white atheletes own guns without the proper I.D. No white sport executives or sport media personnel own guns without the proper I.D. EVER?! I will be waiting to see how long before their HOMES are raided. I won't hold my breath though.

There are 2 ways to look at this case. Do the Bears want to be moralistic and have a zero tolerance policy. Or do they want to make a good business decision. If the Org. won't tolerate this, then showcase him for the rest of the year and trade him around next years draft day. Irregardless, if you run a business then you're looking for return value. And let's face it, this is just a business. Personally, I think there must be more to this and I don't want to jump to any conclusions. If you're looking for accountability in the NFL players, some aren't going to measure up. I don't know Tank, he might be an upright guy who just makes an occasional stupid decision but who among us doesn't. What I think is kinda dumb, is making the same mistakes more than once. To sum up my position, yeah suspend him for the game and move on. This is the life we choose.

Is a second offense on gun charges a misdemeanor? If it is it shouldn't be.

I am amazed by all the sympathizers on this board. Do you all have illegal guns too?

Darryl M. I don't think because everyone knows who you are they won't rob you. Ask guys who are famous how easy it is to be a victim. Where he lives is right off the highway. I never knew where he lived and although I haven't drove through there in a few weeks I kind of know now. I accidently found where Jordan lives and if it wasn't for his big gates and security anyone could go by his house. I happen to make a wrong turn and was turning around and there was no mistaking the big gate and the huge 23. But being a celebrity can attract the riff/raffs. Tank live on a street with no fence or gate. Anyone could walk up to him and do him harm. I don't think he had 6 for protection. Maybe it was a hobby. If the guy is on probation he isn't going to get a FOID card anyway. If he has an order of protection he can't get a card either. I just wonder how many of us commit any minor crime and throw stones. Did you know that it is illegal to record a program from TV? Are you guys ready to turn yourselves in? Who drives more than one mile over the speed limit? Who actually gives to charity like they file on their taxes? Who admit that they run lights and stop signs. Those are misdemeanors and felonies and some people do it every single day. And some of you who have said he should be kicked off the team just did one of those things this morning. Football players and athlethes in general are magnets for trouble- sometimes of their own doing. There are a lot more who get in trouble that you guys don't know about. The law sometimes feel that superstar should get preferential treatment. It just so happens that Tank isn't a star. At least he wasn't yet. But after this maybe he won't be. I just think it's better to save judgment for something worth judging. GO BEARS!

I wanted to know what trigger the this invesagation? Why was Terry "Tank" Johnson targeted. Why was thousands wasted on a raid that lead Tank to receive a $1000.00 bond a hundred dollar to walk. Man force wasted in in Lake County we have numerous of unsolve murder in Lake County. I can think of lot of more important things that Gurnee and Lake Counth officers This was senseless
Come on people we all know the truth

Tank Johnson is absolutely a moron for not keeping his nose clean while he's on probation, but the fact that the cops camped out for 6 weeks around his house, as was reported on WSCR yesterday evening, is equally stupid. I am a white guy from a pretty nice neighborhood, and a Republican, but there is something amiss about what has been set forth thus far. The cops are REALLY willing to go after a millionaire because of 6 guns and a bag of weed, knowing full well that he'll secure the best lawyers and figure out a way to get the weakest punishment? I think this is more an issue of the neighbors not wanting the ghetto-fabulous black guy with the pit bulls in the neighborhood anymore. I am by no stretch of the imagination a big hippie civil rights crusader, but let's be honest about this kind of crap. How many white guys have hunting rifles in their basement and a stash of cuban cigars? Is it really that different of a scenario?

Mike G - are you SERIOUS???

False accusations? Sounds to me like the accusations were DEAD ON - because the police found what they were looking for? So how is that a "false" accusation?

This is nothing like an unregistered car. An unregistered car doesn't shoot burning hot metal at you. This is "we are going to that house to find guns, which means they could end up being used on us. YES GET AS MANY MEN AS POSSIBLE"

What Michael Richards said.
Dump his punk ass

With everything taken into consideration, playoffs, team, children, community, is Tank an idiot? Absolutly. If there was a death penalty for being stupid the world would be empty. The only true morons, and the ones I would put on the first plane out are the people who think this has something to do with skin color whether your black, white or mostly yellow.

First of all, don't play the race card. The police decided to raid his house based on their investigation that had been going on for about for a month. The investigation started when neighbors started complaining about hearing gunshots. The cops arrested him because of that and that he has no gun licenses. It wasn't just because he was Tank Johnson. Any moron that shoots his assault rifles in that backyard of his house in a residential neighborhood needs to be arrested. I don't know if they needed to do it in the fashion that they did. It might be because he did in fact have 2 assault rifles made for the sole purpose of killing human beings, not deer or any other animal.
What should Lovie do? There are only 2 options. Sit him or let him play. The Bears are already in a tight position due to the injury of Tommie Harris. They definately need Tank to be out there for the playoffs. I say sit him down at least for this next game. If there is a game where we won't need him, it's against the Bucs. In fact, we really don't need him for the rest of the games against our weak division rivals. We only need him now for the playoffs.

Roman responds: No matter what race the person is, no way I would want my family living next door to someone who parties like that with so many weapons. No way. And what about Tank's poor kids. Those are the ones who usually get shot. Lovie should sit him Sunday.

Winning trumps all and, but for murder, athletes are usually given a free pass .

Tank is a scum bag and had loaded weapons in his house, accessible to toddlers.

Sadly, in the quest to win, most fans want to see, even criminals, on the field if it means it will help their team win.

Listen I wrote a response earlier. Im not bassing what I think should happen on one incident. 1st he's on propation for the same thing he's just been caught for. 2nd I'm sure part of the propation is NOT BE AROUND GUNS!! 3rd he told a police officer if you were'nt carrying a badge or gun I'd kick your ass. We are talking about a grown man not to mension one of the best defensive players in the game. He knew or knows how much the Bears need him to win a Super Bowl, But do we sacrafice the integrity of the game and law to allow him to play. The only way some people learn is to take away something they really care about. MULEDOG17!! I love the BEars

If he was shooting guns in his backyard, and had a previous gun-related charge, I can see the need for the amount of force that the police used. Is Tank an idiot? Yes. Is he an idiot for illegally owning guns while on probation? Yes. Kick him off the team? No. Bench him until the playoffs? Yes. Give Ian Scott and Boone time to play, get them ready for the playoffs.

First of all, Tank should be accountable for whatever penalty is associated with violating his probation, as should be the case for any of us. Should the Bears step in? I wouldn't want my employer getting involved with my personal life as it is completely unrelated to my job. If he has a clause in his contract then the Bears should execute whatever penalty is a result of violating it. Is Tank an idiot. Maybe not but he isn't exactly Einstien for letting some thug lay around his house getting stoned while he is at work. Tank should get his life right before he or some thug friend of his, takes him down. Football only lasts so long and you will always be remembered for your last season or last play. Do you really want this to be your last play? After football he will be nothing more than a big black dude with a record (and some stoner friends laying around).

Alex,I do wish you lived across from me? The guy next door is cool and a BEARS fan. It's the guy across my drive way who's a bigot. I truly think that Tank's neighbors hate the BS that he does. It can be minimal and they still not like it. I think if Brian Urlacher lived next door and did twice the crap that Tank did that his neighbors would overlook it. My brother had a garage sale and had the same crap like I've always seen at garage sales and I'm sorry to say that NO white people stopped to even look at the stuff. Slowed up and kept going. And he lives RIGHT down the street from Jason Mckie. On the good side of Waukegan. He's over there once and a while and I'm trying to hit up with for tickets but to no avail. But anyway, No one stopped. I've been in the same community at garage sales and there are people lined up to buy that crap. My brother laughed it off but it bothered me that it happened. He's lived in Waukegan for 10 years, now.(The GURNEE SIDE,They do stress that out here, believe me ). It was just my brother and his wife out there. It's not like my brother or I are hood-rats, it's just that some people just don't want to be bothered with people from another race. I say live and let live. The ARMY taught me that there was one race. They told us we were only green. But there was some idiots who believed in dark green and light green. I care nothing about race. But those who say it isn't about race without knowing the particulars is just as guilty as the ones who say it is about race. Because no one knows the particulars totally. Only what they've been told. And like I've said in regard to T.O. when will you know.GO BEARS!!!!

Roman responds: Generalizations are always dangerous. I'm going to assume Tank's neighbors would have trouble with Urlacher doing the same things, much less four times worse.

Ok so he has six guns including an M4 SEMI -rifle. Whats the big deal? He needs to get a FOID card to have them in the State of Illinois. Get the FOID it's over. It is still LEGAL to own firearms in Illinois. No further punishment is necessary. The idiot with the dope...stupid move. WHY in the name of god did NIPAS SWAT need to be there? Reminiscent of of the Branch Davidians-Rubty Ridge if you ask me. OVERKILL! How about just ringing the doorbell? IDIOTS! Whatever happened to the serve part of serve and protect?

Come on people let's PLEASE keep race out of this. I'm a white man who has many friends from different cultures (MOSTLY BLACK)and I would give my left arm for some of my friends. My brother lives in Gurnee/Liberyville area and when I go out there he can't wait to show me and I can wait to see some of the BEARS homes. Unfortunately race sometimes get involved. BUT I DONT CARE WHAT COLOR,FAT SMALL,BIG OR TALL WHEN YOU DO SOMETHING AS STUPID AS TANK DID YOU SHOULD EXPECT THIS CRITISM. what he did is not his personal life it effects the Bears directly the and the sport. you see the size of him what the heck does he need guns for anyway.

I do not give a rat's ___ about the FOID's! Tank had loaded guns laying around his house with toddlers running around.

Tank Johnson is just a misunderstood country boy from Gary. If he wants to go huntin' squirrels along the banks of the Des Plaines River with his .50 American Eagle hand gun, we should try to understand. Country boys do what country boys do.

I think we as a society need to stop putting NFL players up on a pedistal and making them be role models when they didn’t ask to be. I think that parents should teach there kids right from wrong and not depend on celebrities or athletes to do it for them. I have had the pleasure to go out with beats players and I can say from my experience they do need protection there are people out there that look at them as a quick come up an they will try and rob them. I think that many people do things at home that they would never want anyone at work to know and playing football is just another job , just because they get paid more then the people that are complaining they think they owe them something like any of you pay there salary. I don’t make it a point to judge people because I was thought that it will be taken care of by a higher power so maybe some people should just be quite

Yeah, you're right Roman. I was wrong for saying that any of his neighbors would have thought his behavior was okay if he was Urlacher. That's not to say it might not have truth to it. Having great neighbors is truly a beatiful thing. I've had tenants who would rather call the police then ask their neighbors to turn down the TV. Not everyone wants shooting around them. I don't. But if there was shooting then were allowed to enter a house without a search warrant on the day it happened. All they need is preponderance of a crime being committed. Don't think because Gurnee police said that the guns were in plain sight that that is true. If after SWAT and every cop in Gurnee enters a home it better be a very good reason for all that to appease some folks. Letting him bail on 1,000 dollars is rather low. You can do a lot of things and your bail would be much higher. That is as low as it goes really. Someone mentioned how he told a cop that if he didn't have a gun that he'd kick his ___. Why didn't the cop press the matter further? Sometimes people know they started something and just let it die. Or it's just not as serious as it started out being. When I was an MP we had a whole bunch of 5'5" guys who would pick on people because they had a badge and a gun. I've told plenty of my fellow MPs the same thing because they were being asses for no reason. Cops are not always right. Tank should be made to sit a few games and forfeit pay for those two games. The whole matter stinks for a lot of reasons. But like anything else what can we say is the truth on this matter.Enough about Tank. The NFL won't handle this matter until the courts dole out their punishment. All our speculations are just words on a computer screen. GO BEARS!!!

"Innocent until proven guilty" is for the court of law -- not the court of public opinion. He was in possession of the guns and did not have an FOID card. That equates to him being guilty of being an idiot, particularly given his history of brushes with the law. As further evidence of his idiocy, he (allegedly) has a "bodyguard" -- that is, the man who protects him and his family -- that is a convicted felon who likes to partake of weed. Yeah, I'd put my trust in someone like that to protect my loved ones.

I don't care how common it is in certain areas of the country to have lots of guns around the house - I'd reckon that loaded guns, pot and kids don't go well anywhere together, pardners. And 21 ounces of weed isn't a recreation amount - was his buddy dealing?

That really throws an extra wrench in this. If it was just guns, it's almost not so bad. But now there's nearly a kilo of weed in the house, too, even though it appears to be a friend's. And if that's not enough, there's also two young children. Ouch. And prior convictions. Ouch again.

Loaded guns, lots of weed, maybe a dealer, and two little kids in the house? I think DCFS would already have those kids in protective custody if this was a regular joe and if this was a regular case, cuz that's a potentially dangerous situation, last time I checked.

There is one thing for sure, though - there are going to be some really happy lawyers after this is all over. We'll see soon when the suits start the billing clocks running and the charges are made more clearer by the city, county and/or state.

Tank - start to get your act together while you take off the next few weeks, and probably the rest of the season. This is a young man's life we are talking about after all, and the lives of his family, and if the McCaskey's really cared, they'd make the public statement and not a coach of a sports team. A good counselor is in Tank's immediate future, and I hope things work out for all involved.

SIDE NOTE: Smith's response about why Tank is sitting out (because he's "picking the players who give the Bears the best chance to win") is so illogical. Why weren't those guys the best players prior to this?

First it was the up and down play of Grossman. Then it was controlling the spin on that situation. And now this. I bet Lovie is already looking forward to the off-season, even with this promising post-season coming up, don't you?

But as long as the Bears win the last game of the season...will we really care then? That's what they're hoping for, I'd reckon.

Keep that roller-coaster clanking on the track, and keep juking, Lovie!

Roman responds: I believe it was 2 1/2 ounces, not pounds. And I was surprised about Smith saying the motivation to bench Johnson was to improve chances of winning. But I know the CBA prevents the Bears from suspending Johnson for this incident at this time.

Tank is from Arizona, in Arizona he could own 50 guns if he wanted and would not be breaking the law. I live in Arizona and own several guns, some of which are the same guns Tank had, I am not a bad person, and I enjoy shooting as do millions of Americans, and remember it is our Constitutional right, which seems to get forgotten in Illinois. Just because Tank has guns it is ridiculous to assume he is a bad person, I would bet you, that every one of the people persecuting him knows someone who owns a gun, do you think badly of them? I bet you don’t, but Tank is a black man and because of that and only because of that is this an issue to you people. These guns were found in his home, not in a vehicle, for all we know they were for self defense, he is a rich person, with I am sure many nice cars and belongings in his home that he would need to protect. He also has other people living with him which he may feel he needs to protect as well.

Something that is getting missed here by everyone is the actions of the Police. Does it seem strange to anyone, other than me that the Police broke down all of the doors, had two armored vehicles, and dozens of police and SWAT officers. On the news they interviewed a neighbor that said the percousion from them knocking down the doors could be felt in her home and knocked a picture off the wall. Also keep in mind that there were children in the home, all for some misdemeanor gun charges, which Tank only had to pay $100 in bail. That seems like over kill to me, those children could have been hurt by the Police’s actions, all for misdemeanor guns charges, that in 90% of the states would not have even been a misdemeanor.

Lets just let the system work, lets wait until all of the facts come out before we judge this man. Keep in mind that nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes, if you have read anything about Tank he had a pretty rough childhood. Before you pass judgment I would encourage you to read up on him, his dad was in prison for killing someone and his mom was a drug addict, instead of following there path he went to college and is making something of himself. Nobody is saying the man is perfect; he has obviously made some mistakes, but nothing that deserves the way several people have come down on him.

A concerned Bears Fan!!

Roman responds: The next story I read about how having guns saved an athlete's life will be the FIRST. Instead, we keep reading about stuff like today, Tank's friend getting killed. And can we stop blaming the cops for being safe in confiscating that arsenal? I'm aware of the disparity in how African Americans are treated by our legal system, and it's sickening, but for the love of God, what would you do if you were a cop and some convicted armed robber was inside the house smoking pot with loaded assault weapons laying around?? Give me a break. And I don't care if he's from Arizona. He's originally from Gary, Ind., which is the murder capital of the world. Lots of guns there, too. And they have guns in Illinois, just ask Tank's friend.

I just read an update that complaints from neighbors led to the raid. One question; why would you have weed smoke and loaded guns around your babies? That is just not smart or responsible. Oh yeah, this Needed to happen for Tank. I mean He might be feeling down now, but in the long run, he'll be thankful it happened this way because your kids comes first. Having loaded guns and weed smoke around your kids is just stupid. I like Tank Johnson, and dispite some of his run-ins with the law, he seems like a down to earth person. He just needs to make better life decisions and choose better friends. I also read that Lovie will sit him for this game, and that Lovie and the GM has given him one last chance to get his act together or he's gone.

6 loaded guns, kids at home, he's not around, it doesn't get much dumber than that. Because he's a pro athlete this will all mysteriously disappear, he will probably get a $100 fine and all the guns back, and then we will read about his strip club brawl in the offseason....

Roman responds: Offseason? How about today.

What a great combination, loaded guns, dope, two young kids, 3 pit bulls and
and chicago bear lineman who is on probation for a gun violation. He was given a break this year and charges were dropped because of confrontation with a police officer. He needs a year in jail, child welfare should take some action before these kids get killed, and the Bears should void his contract. Sorry but I think he has used up all
his get out of jail cards..

No more excuses like bad judgment, wrong place, etc. especially after the murder; ONCE A LOSER ALWAYS A LOSER

Well, seems like fate has taken another hand...It is times like these when having ownership and team organizational offices stocked full of Mcaskies results in ineffectual leadership, nonprofessionalism in key staff positions, wrongheadedness in direction and tenor, and bad if not tragic decisionmaking and public relations. In other words, when it is obvious to everyone how this team is run, when a players house is raided and the raid is televised, the team sends out Jerry to make some incoherent pronouncement and the player then responds by going out to the clubs and having his associate killed. Nice work angelo, way to lay down the line there. Guess its hard for the team to respond when all the Mcaskie staff are busy with holiday parties and things and maybe out of town at their winter homes. go bears.

Love Smith needs to tell his players that nothing good happens in bars after midnight, not to have an arsenal in their homes, stop hanging around with thugs, and take a limo when you're out boozin'!

Roman responds: Now there's sound advice.

There are felony charges for having guns and drugs in your house hold within the reach of children. And we wonder why DCFS IS SO SCREWED UP, another sports figure left unaccountable for his actions.

You know they have classes and personnel the teams hire who constantly tell these guys what to do and how to do it. How people will make these guys victims and accuse them of crimes they may not commit. They tell them about the qualities they should exhibit and the character they should carry with them at all times. They tell them about the hanger-ons and the dead-beat friends from their old hood who will bring them down and help them blow through their money and waste their lives. They've been told these things a million times and they've seen how it may have happened to someone they know. They tell these guys not to use drugs and guys still fail drug tests. They teach them about ALL the pitfalls in society. If a guy falls off the beaten trail it's not the coach or that quality control guy or their parent's fault that they do these things. It falls back on the person. I can raise my kid with the best intentions. If my child doesn't heed my warning that doesn't mean I failed. I won't take the blame for what he's done and the BEARS should not feel like they should be blamed for Tank's actions. If they can't suspend him because the collective bargaining agreement doesn't allow them to, that isn't their fault. If their hands are tied-what else can they do. You can't make proclamations and then turn around and back-track. You might as well issue a proposal to say nothing about anything. Just be a talking head. I've learned that it's the American-way. GO BEARS!!!

Tank Johnson, you've alienated your neighbors, jeopardized the safety of your children, created a huge distraction for your teammates, associated with a convicted armed robber, what are your immediate plans?

I'm going out dancing, baby! Gotta get my freak on!

First, I am amazed at what some of these people type. Second, lets put the race card down. If I were on probation I would make damn sure that I was in the right on every detail. I am not an Illinois resident aware of Illinois law, but with his record I do not know if the state would even give him a FOID card. I understand and appreciate recreational hunting and target shooting. But if the state would not give him a FOID card, then get rid of the guns. If the state would give him a FOID card...then get the card! It sounds like he got what he deserved. Many people may not like that statement. If I had a record for illegal weapons possession and were reported for firing weapons in my back yard, I would get the same treatment regardless of skin color or community standing. I can understand that the police were leery of entering his home. Two residents of the address have records involving weapons! Reports of discharging weapons in the back yard?!?! What would you do if you were in the position of the officers??? I would take every precaution with this search warrant too. Now, do the weapon violations justify a search warrant? I don't know, but believe me, if I were discharging firearms in my back yard...my house would be stormed too!

Showing up at a bar when your career is already hanging by a thread? Tank is simply to damn dumb to be a professional athlete. It's that simple.

players should be warned join our team and leave any trashy habitsyou had behind

Tank Johnson's situation is related to too many systemic cause and effect relationships to address here. But if their business philosophy transcends the bottom line, the Bears should suspend him, without pay, for the rest of the season. Of course, no one is in a position to judge another. But this is about Mr. Johnson's ignorance of history and the ignorance of the knowledge, that just as money can be an indicator of success, it can also indicate and amplify one's weaknesses. Sometimes, myself included, we have to lose what we have in order to see, that Self is all we have and all that is worth having!

What would cutting Tank really accomplish? Another team will just pick him up. He didn't shoot Posey. All he did was go out on a Friday night after getting reprimanded at work. Basically, the raid is in reaction to gunfire coming from his yard.
Why did the police wait so long to check out the gunfire? I figure police should respond immediately to gunfire or are they too busy giving people tickets and generating revenue for the city to help support their "overtime" and bloated pensions???? Tank needs to register the weapons and watch who he hangs out with...Ray Lewis cleaned up his act let's give Tank a chance. It's not like he beat his wife or anything. It's funny that Chicagoland has become so liberal that a deer hunting rifle and an AR 15 are considered assualt weapons. By the way when all you liberals get your way and the 2nd Amendment get's tossed you'll realize why citizens carrying weapons is the best way to preserve this country's liberties and freedom that are becoming less and less every year. Tank your daughters need you & the Bears need you get it together.

It is so amazing how people can just past judgement on others as if they are so perfect. The whole raid was ridiculious for a misdeamenor. Come on you all know what that was about and if they really was concern why come when he was at practice. It is OK for some to have a gun or guns in there home but not others (Oh they are a detriment to out little society). Get real people you're not perfect and neither is Tank. Let's check your closet and see what we would find!!!!

I wonder how many people actually drive with their license suspended and then criticize someone else for violating laws. Who is so squeaky clean that he/she is perfect all the time. You guys have a writer on the Suntimes who underwent counseling after he beat his wife in a drunken stupor. How many of you guys at the Suntimes vilify him for that. When it happened I didn't see an article denouncing him. He was allowed to get help. Why can't Tank?

Maybe we should stop talking about what a villian Tank is and concentrate on what a hero Posey is. Many of the media keep focusing on his drug habit or his few years in prison, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a hero that night.

Posey may have saved Tank's life. Everyone knows how crazy football fans can be, especially in Chicago. Posey may have been protecting Tank from some overzealous fan or some drunk lunatic. If they discover that was the case, will you change your tune and treat Posey with the respect he deserves?

Posey may have finally found his calling in life, and doing his job well. Why shouldn't we honor that too?

The media seems to blow things out of wack.Certainly as a pro player you have a certain code of conduct.I'm not into guns but believe many others regardless of race or profession have as many weapons if not more than Tank had.Seems if a black player gets busted he's a bad guy in the medias eyes.Don't know situation that caused his bodyguards shooting but another needless death on the streets.First thoughts go out to the family & friends of Mr.Posey . Tank should of not had weapons in his house ,but he most likely is not as bad as media makes him out to be.

Tank, is allowed another chance. If all professionals were terminated after becoming involved in bad situations; there would be no one in sports to entertain the world. Sports are the largest interprises out there. Yes, we as people would be in lost without Sports and the faults that comes with it. Few homes are without protection. But they won't tell. Professionals are always in the news, thats because we really don't know you as well. Our prayers are with the friends family for their loving lost one.

I think there is a concensus thatTank Johnson has made some bonehead decisions in his life. But do we as a society look the other way when a misguided young man does not truly understand his responsibilities as a sports celebrity. I think Tank is from a generation that thinks keeping it real means you have to be hard core and streetwise. Making the millions that he is making means keeping it real. Keep it real when it comes to understanding what comes with earning those millions. Keep it real by realizing that you owe a lot of people for those millions, and keep it real to the owners who pay you those millions when they ask that you follow the laws, policies, and procedures that are put in place.
I think the Bears should keep Tank Johnson regardless of public opinion. They have made decisions in the pass that the court of public opinion did not like, but they still watched the games and they still filled the stadiums. I think therer can be some modifications should be made contractually that ties into his behavior (customer service based). Throughout all of this, no one has criticized Tank's skills on the football field which we should also focus on. The Bears are a top-notch organization that is known throughout the league and in the eyes of public opinions. By dealing with the situation and taking the appropriate action and not releasing him still allows them to continue being one of the elite organizations. I think Tank has learned a valuable lesson behind this and it's unfortunate the death of his longtime friend provided him with this. God does things for a reason and they are not always subtle. So keep Tank Johnson and next year he will win the NFL Man of the Year Award for giving back to the community.

The only crime Tank allegedly committed was to have guns in his house which were not registered in Illinois. Were they his? Did he bring them with him from another state? Is he guilty just because they were in his house, if indeed they were owned by his "bodyguard"?
The rest is poor judgment and not controlling his "employee". There is no evidence Tank used or sold any drugs and the police say that although he was present, he did absolutely nothing and had no part in the fight or killing at the club.
The fact that he was at the club with Posey is the symptom ofthe problem.

This "man-child" needs some strong guidance and counseling. He needs to be taught how to function in everyday society, not by the hood rules. The Bears should punish and lay down some strict rules for him but hsould not get rid of him.
This is not about football, it is about reaching out to help a very troubled individual that could be dangerous to mimself and others. Shunning him will not solve that problem.

Bob

You play with matches, you get burned. Morale: Do not play with matches, then you do not get burned. It's that simple.

Let's face it - Terry Johnson doesn't think he has done anything wrong! That is the entire problem. He believes that six unlicensed weapons in his home are not wrong - a Mans Man kind of thing.

CUT his stupid butt and be rid of him once and for all - heck, just hop on the bus and close the door as he approaches!

help me here a minute, is tank johnson the only player in "any" professional sport to break a law?

my god just suspened, and fine him if and only if he is found guilty. otherwise give it a rest.

Johnson clearly is a dim lit bulb. A Southwestern political figure suggested teachers have handguns there. Does that give all us city folk a look at how differently they view guns than we do?
THE GURNEE ARREST SMACKS of racism!
Neighbors see different colors, fancier cars, pit bulls, and hear gunshots? THEY MUST BE DRUG DEALERS FROM THE HOOD threathening our community. Let's knock down the door.
I'd let Tank play. Winning is everything. Tank's problems will shake out in court. Last time i looked that is where they settle these things and THEN the team and league can decide if tank is a good or bad fit. Not now. Imagine if YOU were arrested & lost YOUR job before you had a chance to defend yourself in court.

It is time for the fans of chicago to turn off all of the negative media attention coming from the press, tv, and radio and rally around the chicago bears. Tank should not be cut. He should be embraced as a member of the bears family. If you, as a fan, don't want to support the Bears, you should be cut.

I've lost respect for the Bears with their lip service about caring for "family" after they dropped that ball the past two years Tank has been in the league, and letting him get to this point. That being said, Tank must go. Does it take one of his kids getting shot at home for this reckless lifestyle to sink in? Obviously the Bears nor Tank Johnson know much about creating a healthy family environment.

At first I was inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, hold him out of one game, and then move on, but we keep hearing about other problems he had in the past, drugs, suspended driving license, etc. They just keep piling up. He is a very good football player, but obviously not a very good citizen. I believe that, not only should the Bears rid themselves of this problem person, but the league should suspend him for a period, no less than two years. Sad.

i've worked with people who have done alot worse but did not lose there job unless they were convicted.( but nobody was jealous of the money they were making)also i did'nt know going to a night club was such a bad thing, so i guess if anything ever happens to somebody late at night unless there home it there own fault. if your kid gets hit by a drunk drivers late at night it his or her fault for being out after midnight

Even though what Tank did was as dumb as it gets, you can't just throw someone in the trash when they are down. This man needs help. A big pat on the back to the Chicago Bears for sticking with Tank at this time. He needs to be surrounded by people who care about him, and what better a place , than around his teammates. Maybe they can talk some sense into him. He is probably not a bad guy, just no direction. Nice job Bears for looking out for him as a human being and not just a commodity, Tank needs you now. I stand behind him , unless he gets stupid again....then I would say...good ridence!!!

Some say the Bears should sack Mr. Johnson because he stands accused of failing to file the right paperwork for his guns, AND witnessed the murder of his pal, AND drove his car when his license was suspended, AND smoked some pot. Fired is way too good for such a monster! Lock him up and throw away the key! \
