Should Bears rest starters last two games?
The last two games of the regular season mean nothing to the Bears, who have home field locked up throughout the NFC playoffs. So should Lovie Smith rest starters like Rex Grossman and Brian Urlacher http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/181593,CST-SPT-rest21.article?
Lovie rested Rex last year against Minnesota and was criticized, although his strategy seemed wise when Rex played well against Carolina in the playoffs.
No one would argue that an injured Grossman or Urlacher is worse than a momentum-starved Grossman or Urlacher. So play the starters a quarter or a little longer and get ready for the playoffs.

I think that if anyone is injured they should sit it out. If they're healthy rotate them in per series. Not playing football for a month requires a certain amount of rust to me expected. You're not gonna please everyone with any decision you make. This is just another luxury that the BEARS have because they are not playing for anything. It's not like we can forfeit and still keep momentum so we play it because we have to. But they better expect for Detroit and Green Bay to come out and hit them like a spoiled child resisting a time out. We still want to beat them especially Green Bay because of that pride factor. We don't need them hanging their hats on a split season record. If we don't go in playing hard they'll make us look like Minnesota did. We didn't need the game but look at how serious they took it whenever they scored. You would've thought that they were going to the playoffs instead of home. No one should demoralize even if it shouldn't mean anything. GO BEARS!!!

They're going to need to keep their game face on until the playoffs, so I'd say cycle them in the game for a few minutes. The defense needs to get it's act together, so I say pull Urlacher out altogether. Let Orton get a few rips. It makes no sense that he hasn't played this season.

Eh--I say the Bears treat it like a preseason game, play Rex for a quarter or two and then sit him for the rest of the game. Keep all the injured folks on the sidelines, sit Urlacher and Briggs after the first half, rotate D-Linemen, start Benson, and give Peterson a bunch of touches.

Keylan: Orton? Are you kidding me? Have you even looked at his stats from last year? He was terrible. Did you watch any of those games last year? After we won five in a row I couldn't bring myself to watch the games anymore. I turned it off when the offense was on the field! No joke. They were awful.
The offense is clicking. Put them in for three quarters or so. Run some timing patterns, run some plays that are dead-giveaways and then use a few for trick plays in the playoffs (put Hester in at wide-out and run a draw play twice in the two games, then do a play action pass in the playoffs, or a reverse, or some other such nonsense to give the team a spark if they get down early in the games and can't seem to move the ball for some reason). There's all kinds of mind games you can play with the future teams looking at the film.
That being said, if the O-line gets pushed around and Grossman is getting hammered, pull him in favor of Griese. They should also kick onside kicks every opportunity they get to practice the play and to put pressure on the defense to make plays. Run fake punts and fake field goals (maybe not the latter since Gould needs to get back on track).

Play all the non injured starters for a half against detroit. Then if green bay has nothing to play for in that game then play them only a quarter. If green bay has a playoff chance then knock the shit outta of them for 3 quarters. Its gonna be hard to keep urlacher and them boys that been around a while out aganst favre and co.

No. But they should give backups work, it will only help in a injury situation. Greise should have 3 quarters out of these games.

I think the Bears should start Griese--Grossman has not done the job!!

I would suggest that anyone with an injury sits. Other than that, work on any facet of the offense or defense that the staff is not happy with. Save every new wrinkle for the playoffs and just be intensley aggressive with whatever the gameplan is.
To substitute is fine, but you want to maintain a cohesive agressive attack so it doesn't devolve into a disorganized exhibition. The worst possible thing is to go into the playoffs trying to correct any letdowns in these last 2 games.
The devil is the details, how do you do this? Lovie will be judged on this, fairly or not.
I guess the best thing is to be contrary to anything you are going to do in these coming playoffs.

No they should not be rested for the last games. We all seen what happened last year. Resting them just makes them rusty. They are gonna get a week off anyway, so thats their rest.

Guys that need a rest should get it. Key players should have their playing time limited and key back-ups should get some extra playing time. The Bears did not lose vs. Carolina because they were rested vs. Minn. They lost because the team was out-coached and out-played. The plan was bad and too many players thought that winning in the playoffs meant shooting their mouths off. The coaching staff and many players flat out did their jobs poorly which caused the entire team and all of its loyal fans to experience an embarrassing failure.

The Bears started "resting" after the first half last week against the Bucs...I think Rex has to play...He's starting to get into a rhythm...He needs to play...The rest of the players need to stay hungry...If they are thinking about getting injured and not concentrating on the DAYS GAME, that's when injuries happen...They all need to stay sharp and they need to go into the playoffs on a roll...No matter who they play, they need to play better as a team...The Lions and the Pack are going to be playing hard...We will see how the Bears respond Sunday because they let up against the Bucs and figured they would just fold...When you get a big lead, don't let up...Bury 'em...We'll see if tha Bears get the message.

AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER,MY HEAD AGREES WITH EVERYTHING SAID--"REST THEM"
MY HEART SAYS OTHERWISE. HOW LONG AGO WAS IT WHEN THESE VERY SAME TEAMS LITERALLY STOMPED ON THE BELOVED BEARS WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT TO HOW WE (FANS) FELT?? REMEMBER THESE GAMES COUNT TO OVERALL STATS WITH REGARDS TO TEAM PAST MEETINGS. IT DOESN'T SHOW UP AS A
" WE RESTED OUR PLAYERS"-- IT SHOWS UP AS A LOSS IN THE FINAL MEETING STATS,THE OVERALL WIN LOSS AGAINST A TEAM-- FOREVER!!! PLAY EVERYONE, UNTIL WE GET FAR ENOUGH AHEAD TO PULL STARTERS,ONE OR TWO AT A TIME, THEN PUT IN SUBS.
ESPECILLY DON'T LET CHEESE HEADS GET ANOTHER WIN, DETROIT--I COULD CARE LESS. REMEMBER,ANYONE CAN GET HURT ANYTIME,ESPECILLY IF GET OUT OF SHAPE RESTING ON THE BENCH.HOW MANY TIMES WAS BRETT PULED AGAINST THE BEARS??

Brian Urlacher spoke about how they played the last game in 2001 and still lost in the post season. You had guys barking and woofing in 85 and I think that's as big headed a thing that you can do. No one speaks about that. One man's confidence is another man's motivation. The MAIN reason we lost last year is Mike Brown got hurt and we had to put guys in who weren't ready to play against Steve Smith. Guys are 2nd string because they're not better than the guy ahead of them. Mike Brown was head and shoulders better than ANY guy that could replace him last year. Same as this this year. The coaching staff got stubborn because after they moved the DBs around they weren't talented enough to stop Smith. Just like this last game when D.Manning was caught overcompensating for Hester who was out of position. Guys get out of position because of inexperience. Mike got hurt trying to come over and help Tillman. He was already hurt and was very limited in what he could do. After he got hurt we didn't have a safety with enough speed to help over the top and not enough experience to not get caught out of position. The coaches know how hard it is to flip-flop guys so they kept them where they were. In hindsight it didn't work and that's why they spent so much money in free-agency and drafted so many DBs. Fact of the matter is we didn't have anyone good enough to defend well enough last year. The same reason we got worse this year after Mike Brown got hurt is the same reason we lost to Carolina last year. Resting those guys who will have to defend the pass and getting them close to 100% will go a long way in helping us this post season. If we don't advance in the post season it'll be because we don't have Mike Brown again. You can't say that the run-game is suspect. Passing can go either way,but you really need the running game to work to be effective. I know people were booing the last game when Lovie elected to go into over-time instead of going for it. I think that was the right move. You had an inexperienced LT blocking in obvious passing downs. I would have expected them to probably miss a block somewhere while Tampa was blitzing and if they had hit Rex we know he probably would have fumbled. Chances are great that they would have kicked a FG for the win. A couple of weeks ago their PK kicked a 60 yarder. To take all that into consideration and decide to take your chances in overtime was a no-brainer. Trying to please the fans who are not knowledgable will get your team in a habit of losing. Go for what you know-not please the people. Not having Tait in really didn't help the offensive rhythym. Tait would have played the last game if it was a dire situation. Everyone who sat out this last game would have played if it was important. I think it's best to rotate guys for a few series every quarter. Momentum works best of you have a gameplan that you can effectively execute. Of course it's always best to have as few banged up play-makers as possible. Our offense is still a strength and our D will be better than what they are showing right now. As the season progresses I'm not as worried about the post season as I was. I really think we will match up well against any team in the NFC. I won't worry about what the other teams do against each other. WE can only worry about ourselves. I won't say punch that SB ticket but I won't say it won't happen. Enough said,GO BEARS!!!

Bears should play their starters for the least two games, and should treat the games as playoff games. We all saw last year how they lost to Carolina because of their rust, and their inability to stop Steve Smith. This year,we need to focus on gearing up our offense and defense to compete in January, or will be one and done again.

I have not seen one blog where racial undertones were not insinuated. This is getting old folks.
Per the Q... The Bears should treat this just like a preseason game. Enough said.

As much as I would like to see the Bears finish off the year with an explosive bang & blow out these last two teams; I think that the safest and smart thing to do is rest the starters, including Tank & maybe even Jones. I disagree about letting them ride the bench though; they should get on the field a few times to keep their momentum and to eliminate any chance of getting rudty. And besides Rexy can use the practice; no stress=a chance to test the waters and that may be what he needs to prepare himself for this history in the making trip to the Superbowl. Before reading this blog I was thinking "let's take it week by week." I still feel the same way but now I realize that we have three weeks off and 2 of the scrimages will be telivised.
Acacia Out

The defense is beat up and they're still winning, Now is not the time to panic. Grossman is basically in his second season and making rookie mistakes but Griese is always there if we need him. Let Lovie coach as he sees fit. Should be highest paid coach in football.

I think the players should play at least the first half so the are not rusty, look at last year when we rested players, we gave up a TD on the first play against Carolina and never recovered. The problem isnt resting it is the Defense of line...I would have sworn that Alex Brown was resting, were has he been for the last 6 games. The D was playing 3 players who had 3 games started or less and we got dominated on the pass rush. Except for mark Anderson, who should be starting in place of Alex Brown,The D line was gone. When we play a team that can pass, we are going to get our butt handed to us, if you have playoff tickets now, sell because unless we can put pressure on the QB, we will not win.
Posted by: scott ward | December 25, 2006 10:33 PM
Since we already beat the Lions, I agree that Rex should play the first half and Griese needs a half to stay mentally sharp..just in case. Defense needs to work on both aspects run and pass defense..hopefully get the lead before teh subs come in and most importantly..come out of the game with no injuries..problem is Green Bay will probably be playing for a spot in the playoffs and absolutely need to win..tempting as it is to make Favre's last game a painful loss..the overall goal is a Superbowl victory...

Do not play anyone who is hurt. What do they have to gain by playing Tillman and risk losing him for the playoffs?
I do want to see Hester work out his problems that he had last week and I want to see Benson get a lot of carries. You are paying him a lot of money so lets what he can do once and for all.

YA GOTTA PLAY ANDERSON. MOVE HIM TO OLB REPLACE HILLIENMEYER. THIS WILL WORK LIKE WHEN #54 WAS MOVED TO MLB

From what I saw last Sunday against Detroit, we need to rest Rex, the One and Done Wonder, the remainder of the season. After all, we want to win the Super Bowl, don't we?
Posted by: Paul Anderson | December 28, 2006 10:07 AM
i think they should have rested grossman since the 6th game. the rest should be playing unless they are injuried or hurting. PLAY GRIESE NOW AND THROUGH THE PLAY-OFFS
Posted by: clay preston | December 29, 2006 07:00 AM
Well, looks like griese could use some more practice. The lil fellar just can't pass over the lineman, and it wasn't even cold and he was dropping snaps. If lovie can't get his teams ready any better than the game against the packers then the bears will be resting soon for the whole offseason.
