Rex talks the talk

| | Comments (29)

Nothing like some true bad blood to galvanize a city around its quarterback. Thanks to Vikings' safety Darren Sharper, the enemy for many Bears fans now is Minnesota, not Rex Grossman.

Rex doesn't look like much of a trash talker, although it was strange to see him laughing on the sidelines at Foxborough last week. He often looks to me - at least lately - like a deer caught in headlights with sagging confidence. But the Vikes see someone else, and they're going to try to do something about it.

Should be fun.

I couldn't care less what Sharper or any Viking has to say about anything. He is running his mouth to distract the Bears because he knows they need help to win. I'm sure Rex has talked less trash in his life that Sharper has in one game. I want Sharper to S.T.F. up.

I don't mind the fact that Grossman talked trash considering that he was assaulted verbally the whole game. I think that he should have been collected, but he is young and sometimes you cannot help yourself. He should have kept it PG-13 though.

I believe that Grossman will rebound and finish the season strong. Hopefully we do win the Supper Bowl but I don't think that Griese will take us there. He is a career backup for a reason.

On another thought, I believe that Mariotti is a retard and a Bear Hater...to put it mildly. He always is negative about them in print as well as TV. Must be a Viqueen fan

Yeah its a shame Darin Sharper and the Vikings need to motivate themselves by airing trash talk that happened on the field to the media. He needs to keep HIS mouth shut. I don't know if it's an attempt to get into Rex's head or what. I never liked him... I hope the Bears blow them them out!

You know what? They can talk all they want but Rex need to put up the best fight and win. That's the only way to shut anyone up.GO BEARS!!!

I hope Sharper doesn't get distracted by any sex-cruise/boat trips before the game - - he needs to stay focused on his team's poor play.

This is their chance to make a statement by pounding the Viking and winnning the division. Then play to their potential the rest of the way and win the damn SB. No more stupid stuff, no more whining about this or that. Play Bear ball and kick everyone's a$$. That's it! Nothing else.

A lot of these guys talk just because they put a mike in their face. I hate it when someone says something and you know it was silly to say it. It bothers me little when a guy from the opoosing team talk about our players. It bothers me more when a guy on our team talk about our players. I see Benson is at it again talking about his situation with the BEARS.AGAIN.

I'm afraid we'll have to listen to Sharper a lot more after Grossman's normal 3 picks per game again this week (plus maybe another bonus fumble). He had two last game against Minnesota and you could argue that he was a much better quarterback then compared to now.

I want a pledge from everyone who posts here, when Grossman blows it again this week, no more posts with the following:

"remember, he's still just a rookie"

"the offensive line just isn't giving him time"

"if the coaches would just simplify the gameplan he would do so much better"

"hey, we're 9 and 3, who wouldn't have been happy with that at the beginning of the year"

"I've seen Griese play, he sucks"

"don't hurt Grossman's feelings by benching him"

"all quarterbacks struggle in their first 20 games"

"don't worry about Dallas, we'll figure out Romo by the time he gets here"

Please sign the pledge here:

A lot of you so called fans are extremely IMMATURE. Why is anyone NOT considered a "FAN" if they point out the truth? Fact is, Wrecks Grossman is NOT a realiable NFL QB. That's a FACT not fiction.

to those of you who say their's a reason Greise is a career backup,I respond their's a reason Rex Grossman was the 20th pick in the draft and the 5th quarterback chosen he is not that good! And he never earned the starting job it was given 2 him!

If rex can't have an excellent game against a secondary that gave up 400 yards passing to leinart then he deserves to get benched. Our rb's won't run wild against their run d and rex is going to have to win with his arm.He does have a soft image and this is the game he can shed some of his haters. If he can't have a good game at home against a divisional rival who's talking smack for the divisional championship what good is he really? This is the kinda of game pro qbs play for and this is the time for him to bring it.

Sure would be neat if someone in the Grossman crowd would give us the name of ONE QB in the entire history of the NFL Playoffs who has had such a meltdown during the regular season and kept his job.

Don't bring up the garbage about the Bears being 9-2 either. Grossman is NOT why they are 9-2.

Don't accuse me of hating him either. I accuse his backers of loving him so much that they don't give a Rat's behind about any of the other players on the team.

Don't tell me how the Team is behind him either. Take a look at the faces of the members of that team directly after each of Grossman's gross errors.

Tell me how they are going to be so glad Grossman was left in, when they are ONE and DONE in the Playoffs again.

Don't tell me, "Grossman has been to the Playoffs and Griese hasn't. Saying that after Grossman's 41% Completion rate, and the fact that he did NOT get them there, is hilarious.

Griese did lead his team to the Playoffs in only his 2nd year in the NFL. He was also the leagues top rated passer that year. Unfortunately, after having his shoulder pounded into the turf in 2 different games, it finally separated completely, and he was out for the rest of the year.

Not before finishing the entire 3 quarters after the total separation though, and winning the game. His Completion %? 67.5 Even with his shoulder disconnected from the socket he is much more accurate than Grossman.

Incidentally, Griese also received 2 All Heart Trophies that year. One for that game. The other for the year because of several games.

We can talk about his 7 TDs, 7 Interceptions last year. 2 came right after a concussion suffered at Detroit. (funny, Gruden felt that Griese with a concussion was better than Simms without)

I guess he was right. Griese shrugged it off, went on to throw two TD and they won the game.

Then ask Clayton how many catches he batted up for Interceptions in his Sophmore slump.

I could write a book on why Griese should be in there. I could write another on why Grossman should be benched, no matter who was the backup.

Just for starters, as any Chicago fan should know, Griese is VERY, Very, good at getting a ball to HIS Receivers, throwing off his back foot and falling backward. Grossman has proven he can't.

>>Twice

“That’s one of the great throws I have seen this year, said Gruden. “He throws that ball off of his flat foot, falling backwards and the ball travels 36 yards and is six feet off the ground and hits Pittman at full stride. I don’t know why people don’t know who this guy is now.

Rebecka, nice article. You know he's here for a reason. I think they want to give Rex every opportunity to succeed. They already know what they have in Griese. That's why he doesn't get any real reps in practice .They want those other two to be as ready as they know that Griese is. If the season was in real peril they would make a change. But why give a guy a hint that you're not happy with him and mess with his confidence. It's better to remain cool and collected like a string quartet on the Titanic than Moe, Larry and Curly. GO BEARS!!!

i agree rex is having a rough stretch and he needs to fix it before the playoffs against some crap teams or we'll be one and done...he is the difference i think we can all agree...

but lets look at griese who after a couple tough games from grossman is being called up by bears fans

last five years:
2001
TD 23 Int 19 FUmbles: 7 Rating:78.5
and that was his prime...
2002
15 tds 15 picks...grossman is still better than that
2003
5tds 6ints and 4 fumbles in
5 GAMES
2004
20tds 12 ints..6fumbles.meh
not bad
but
2005
6 games...7tds and 7 ints
as u can see he has some injury problems...he fumbles..n hes not the most efficient qb

all im saying is bash grossman all you want because as sports fans...we do that..but he will eventually bounce back and he is the leader...
Remember last year against atlanta he came in the second half and lit it up
and the playoffs...how bout everyone who says "1 n done ...1 n done" just shuts up and see that grossman gave em 21 points...and all by the offense (no def tds)...that was the most offensive production they had all season last year...yet the DEFENSE...as good as it was and still is...gave a huge day to steve smith...as well as a key injury to mike brown in the first q...well now we've fixed the secondary (both mannings) so if the Def stays consistent.....welcome to miami bears fans...

I'm surprised that Benson hasn't
said a lot more. He is the best running back on the Bears. It was plain to see against the Patriots that he runs people over and Jones can't run anyone over. Why isn't Benson at least used in short yardage situations! The Bears need to start Benson and then use Jones latter in the game. Just reverse the rotation, it would be a better compliment and the best back would get there bulk of the carries.

Hey John F....
If Grossman plays good will you finally give it a rest with your negativity. If you are a Bears' fan than wht are you on Romo and Dallas' jock. Almost every post you talk about how Rex should be benched and Griese should be the starter and how great Dallas is and how they would kill the Bears by 14 points. If you are a Bears fan you sure don't act like it. If Grossman has a good game will you stop with your constant judging of him on every play and finally come to terms that he is the starter not Griese, who the Bucs obviously didn't have much faith in or else they would have resigned him not Simms.

Blake,

I am a Bears fan, and I want them to win the Superbowl. Being a fan means having an opinion and voicing it when a player is hurting the team. Grossman obviously has been in the last six games, especially in the last four.

Tony Romo is palying way better than Grossman and is surrounded by supurb skill players and a solid defense. The Bears are a lot like the Cowboys with one big difference - the quarterback. Romo is playing at a high level and Grossman is playing badly. Unless and until the Bears get consistenly good (not even great) play at the quarterback position, they will be beaten in the playoffs. I don't want this to happen, it is just a fact.

I don't judge Grossman on every play, but I do judge him on the steady decline in his mechanics, decisions and accuracy over the last six games.

If I am being negative it is because I see this season slipping away due to the coaches being stubborn and sticking with an ineffective quarterback. If Grossman has one good game I will not cease in my criticism of him. I want to see three, four games in a row with no turnovers, accurate passes, good decisions under pressure.

Great players can't be seated. If Benson is going to be the every down back he has to earn it. Who cares what you did in college. You have to keep at it in the pros. Sure he can run people over but he has moments just like Jones where he can't make it past the line of scrimmage. There's more to it than running guys over. If it wasn't he would be in more. He can't take that to the media. He can't violate the sanctity of the locker-room and run his mouth in a self-grandiose manner. If Neal Anderson had talked about Walter in any shape or fashion other than admiration you guys would have run him out of the city. It was obvious that Walter was no longer a great runner in his last year but still Anderson had respect for him.No, I'm not comparing Walter to Jones.Situation is where there is a veteran who knows the job a little better. Earn it or wait your turn. If Benson was top-shelf it would be easy to sit Jones down. It's something(s) that he isn't doing that we may not know about that is keeping him closer to the bench. If you know you have a stud back you ride him all day Sunday. WE are missing something about him. I think Bradley is better than Davis. That's not going to get Bradley in more. It's how they prepare and what they know. There are some players who never practice hard and coaches feel that translate to how you play on Sundays. All the talent in the world doesn't mean squat if you aren't consistent. GO BEARS!!!

Rex has shown something this year, and that is the POSSIBILTY to take over a game. When was the last time the Bears had that? Maybe Kramer, but that is pushing it. I look for Rex to pass for 280, 3 touchdowns, and 1 pick. Time will tell. GO BEARS AND BULLS, and cubbies lol.

I don't mind a player having a bit of swagger and being a little cocky in fact I embrace it but, I think you should be able to back it up on the feild which grossman is not doing right now. I know in the heat of battle things could get testy but if your going to talk the talk you need to be able to walk the walk. Let your play do your talking!! Right now grossman's play is not saying much not in a positive way any how.

It's gonna be cold as a witch's wonderbra today and the running game is going to be a serious factor. Once these receivers start dropping these frozen and slick balls someone better double team Pat Williams and run it up their gut 75 % of the time.GO BEARS!!!

Hey Maurice it isn't where you're picked it's what you do once you're in. Montana 3rd round pick. Brady 6th round pick. I wonder how many QBs picked before each of them took their team to the SB and won it. Just a thought.

Excellent point Frank. Talking trash because you got a TD, THAT WAS ONLY NECESSARY BECAUSE YOU THREW A BONEHEAD INTERCEPTION to start the 4th quarter sounds more like childishness. Especially because 3 more of the Vikings points had come off another Grossman Interception.

Then, how many more times did Vikings Defenders drop Grossman's passes? He should have been thanking them actually.

Abe,
You are comparing apples and onions.
Did Grossman throw 2 Interceptions because he had just suffered a concussion in that game, but then go on to throw 2 TDs to win it? 2005 1st Detroit Game.

Did Grossman go to a brand new team, have very little playing time with the 1st team, take over in the 2nd quarter of the 5th game and proceed to best the Rating and completion % of every QB that ever played for that team, including the SB winning QB from 2 years before? That with his main threat being a rookie receiver. Bucs, 2004

Did Grossman sign with a team in JUNE, have absolutely no reps with the 1st team, and still have a 5TD 6 Int., 3 wins out of 5 record? Miami 2003.

Did Grossman lose both TJ and Clark 5 games into his 1st year while playing a SB schedule? Griese lost TD and Sharpe. Not to mention that his line was being switched around constantly.

Sharpe then gets traded in 2000, and is still gone in 2001 when they lose McCaffrey in the 1st game of the season and Rod Smith spends the year trying to play with injuries to both ankles. That is just the tip of the iceberg.

This is just about the dumbest quote i have ever come across from any Grossman fan.
Referring to Griese, "as u can see he has some injury problems...he fumbles..n hes not the most efficient qb"

Griese has injury problems??? Not one of HIS injuries came from tripping over his own feet.

He fumbles??? Most QBs have some fumbles. Only 2 come to mind for fuimbling the snap. The most basic play in football. Grossman and Chris Simms.

Then what does Grossman do? Well, he lets Kreutz take the blame.

Think about something. If you were taking blame for something you didn't do, wouldn't you kind of expect the real culprit to speak up? I sure would.

Especially since anyone that watched that replay knows Grossman was the one at fault.

Wow! Just Wow!
"Remember last year against atlanta he came in the second half and lit it up."

What game were you watching? The Atlanta game was won BEFORE Grossman went in, and I would hardly call a game where he didn't throw a TD but did manage an Interception, as "LIGHTING IT UP."

You are bragging that Grossman got 21 points vs Carolina?????
A good QB is in the game to the very end. After Carolina's last score, he had THREE chances to bring the Bears back. THREE.

1st drive=3 and out.
2nd drive=9 plays, chicago 17 to Carolina 37. Interception.
3rd drive=3 of 6 for 25 yards. Turned over on downs.
Looked more like a CHOKE of epic proportions to me. Did you even watch the game with your eyes open? Thought not.

Yeah, you just go ahead and blame the Chicago Defense for not being perfect. Your adoration of grossman and total inability to see his many faults has been duly noted.

Its halftime and rex isn't showing he wants to keep his job. We'll see if greise comes to the rescue.

I love the way the Bears are playing! Depending on their defense and special teams to save them from the ineptitude of their offense, is the reason why they will not win in the playoffs. I have enjoyed watching the meltdown of Rex and the need for the defense to win the game...if that's the hope that Bears fans have to win a Superbowl...well, I love it...I am a Dallas Cowboys fan. . .I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE OVERRATED BEARS TO PLAY AGAINST THEM IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! KEEP BEATING UP THE WEAK TEAMS AND THINK THAT YOU ARE BETTER THAN YOU REALLY ARE...I AM WILLING TO PUT BIG MONEY ON THE FACT THAT BEARS FANS ARE GOING TO BE SITTING AT HOME WONDERING WHY THEIR DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS COULDN'T BAIL THEM OUT WHEN IT MATTERRED!!! ENJOY THE RECORD FANS IT'S GOING TO BE THE ONLY GOOD TASTE LEFT IN YOUR MOUTHS AFTER THE PLAYOFFS...REX IS MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it looks like Rex's confidence is shot. If I'd had any faith in Rex in the first place, I'd be surprised. Hah.

I'm not going to go so far as to call for Griese, but it'll no longer be a bad coaching move for Rex to be benched. Let's hope Griese and Grossman split first-team reps in practice. I still don't think Griese can put the Bears over the top, but he can't be any worse than the way Rex is playing--there's no excuse for 34 yards passing, especially not against Minnesota's pass defense.

To be fair, I think Rex can turn it around. Unfortunately, he appears to be completely lost.

Right now Rex has the Dear in the Headlights look that Kyle Orton had last year. He is so unsure of himself and his decision making the last month. His completion percentage is getting lower every week. The Bears need a strong passing game to get the run game off the ground. Teams are going to start sitting on the run game because they know Rex is gone. Coach Smith is going to have to make a hard decision if this team is to advance past the first round. You can't go to the playoffs just counting on your defense to win games for you. If this team does not advance past the second round this season will have been a total failure and i would have to start questioning Lovie Smiths motives and coaching.

Hey William my comment was in response 2 those who say Greise is a career backup so that automatically means he is not better than Grossman. And its true that Montana and Brady were exceptions 2 the rule, the exact reasons why alot of teams passed on Grossman are showing in his play! His size, accuracy, and decisionmaking.

Cool, Maurice, I don't hate Griese myself. I was glad we got him. I can't say that Rex will turn it around anytime soon. I do have faith that Griese would take this team to the SB if given the chance. All you have to do is be servicable-not make too many mistakes and keep a defense honest. I Bet Tampa wish they had him there, still. I don't see how these QBs that are solid on offense is can lose their job. It all comes down to paying one guy to be the starter and lowballing his back up.
