Which is more "helpful" to the Bears?

check back with me in february.

neither. Losing doesn't help you learn how to win, it just makes you feel stupid for not getting it in the first place.

It would be nice to see one player or coach show the kind of fire and determination that jordan had and maintained championship after championship. He knew how to win. Even the 85 bears squandered their chance for a run of multiple titles. Ownership let marshall go (watch history repeat with briggs), wrong players get contracts, big egos of put ahead of winning for fans. Coaches point fingers at others, etc

How many more times will we have to watch the Bears get out coached and the team not be ready to play? Be too bad to squander a chance to actually win something for a change.

I can't. A loss is a loss. I do wish the comparision of the 85 Bears and 06 Bears would stop. Totally different time, era, and styles. Untill the Bears can win a playoff game and hopfully make the playoffs this year lets let it go. They have alot to prove now. Even to me. After Grossman threw the one interseption off his back foot I turned the game off. I have been a Bears fan as far back as I can remember and I've never been to Chicago. The sad thing is I aways wait for the melt down. I think this Sunday was it. I can only hope and pray that this isn't the start of that downward spiral. Our division is weak for now. I hope this year dosen't slip through there fingers. Willy

I think '06 is more helpful. The '85 team did not have a coaching staff that was oblivious to and unable to correct significant problems. This by the way is the most significant problem of all.

Shouldn't Rex Grossman be placed in the shotgun formation, since his height doesn't always allow him to see over the defensive linemen? He has a cannon for an arm and if given the space can set his feet and fire!

Is there anyone else out there even slightly perturbed that our star player went out the night before a game with the opposing player? If Dick Butkus was dead he'd be turning over in his grave. Not only does he go out he PAID.What kind of egg did he have on his face when that player went out and had a monster game? This is why it's hard to be a fan when we consort with the enemy before a game.I know some of you think that he can associate with whomever he pleases but I would have thought different if the opposing player was Marty Booker or some ex-BEAR.I know he's Brian but that's BS.Even TURNER wouldn't talk with his brother before any game.GO BEARS!!

Neither--although this year's team certainly needed the relief from the pressure of potentially going 16-0.

PLEASE...NO MORE REFERENCES TO THE '85 BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
21 years ago is about the same length of time from the '63 team. As a huge fan of the '85 team (back then anyway), I can tell you few people brought up that team. Can we get some new material? Let's be creative here...

the 06 bears loss was not shocking or suprising. THEY ARE NOT THAT GOOD.

I love the bears and really would love to seem them win the divison, then win the confernece and then go to the superbowl. They really should have 3 loses at this point. this lose might help them realize..they have trouble stopping the run and trouble running the ball. You cant be the best in the NFL with those two big weakness.

Hey Roman, why don't you start a blog asking if it bothered anyone that Urlacher took Jason Taylor to dinner the night before the game and whether or not they consider it consorting with the enemy.I'd like to see how that would go.I think everyone is looking at the 85 vs 06 comparisons as a stretch, now.Thanx,William.

I hope the BEARS give Benson a whole lot of reps in this game.I truly would like to see if he's the real deal. It's time to make a change because it's gonna be our running game that keeps us from sinking from here on out.I'm not an advocate of losing to gain character.Sometimes that losing stuff just starts to snowball.I believe that Rex needs an honest to goodness running game now more than ever. What we have left to receive his passes might just be considered a long handoff.Getting Berrian back before too long is of utmost importance. It's a blow not having him,but they have a week of practice to get them ready.I think if Gage looks like crap again they should cut him on the spot. All that height and no heart.Having someone knock the ball lose after a positive play sucked whatever life Rex had right out of him. They have to man up and drink some of Frank Lee's BEAR's-Kool-aide to get that bravado back. That said,GO BEARS!!!

C'mon lets STOP THE CRAP! It's time for the coaching staff and head honcho to WAKE UP and realize that we're going nowhere at this point in time! When Grossman messes up again..PULL HIM! Why do we have 2 back up quarterbacks grabbing some bench? Griese has paid his dues and has been a winner..so what's the problem. Are we afraid to hurt Grossman's ego by sitting him for part of a game? Are we afraid to check out Benson for more than 8 plays a game. I saw him pass-block and I didn't really see any ole's. I don't know about you..but I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired watching our #1? running back fall down after being slightly touched by an opposing defensive player. So coaching staff and ESPECIALLY the head honcho..if you want to be paid like an elite coach..start acting like one!!..LETS WAKE UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE and its once again wait 'til next year.
Now..back to my SPIKED Bear KoolAide. Streamwood Frank.

The 85 team was on a mission. They got beat by a good team with an outstanding QB and receivers. They continued on with their mission the next week and completed it by winning the super bowl.

This team spends too much time talking to the media about how great they are. When the 85 Bears beat the 49ers in Oct, you could sense they were going to do it. Not this team. Run defense isn't that good, and they can't stop short passes. Rex can't avoid the rush and deliver an accurate ball at the same time. This loss won't help correct these problems.

The only thing I feel with this loss is alarm. How many times do you have to learn the same lesson. The Bears seem to panic when adversity strikes during the course of a game, at least so far. The lack of ability to adjust when things aren't going well is not a good sign. I really like Rex, but hey when you have Griese (who unless I'm totally wrong, knows how to manage a game and let the D win) use that ability. Rex has proven that when the game starts his game tends to snowball. The only problem is we don't know which way it's going to roll.

Injuries are what's derailing us right about now.Mike Brown was doing a lot more to stop the run than a lot of you guys were giving him credit for.Since he's been out there's been a bleeding that's getting worse every game.Losing Berrian is taking some life away from the offense. At least in the last game. The team was always a little short on talent, but somewhere along the line the comparisons to the 85 BEARS started to surface.I don't remember one player even making comparisons, and when people realise where they started they'll see no one on this team ever did any comparisons. The media did that to sell papers and people just chimed in like clockwork. It was like starting a rumor and it just grew legs and ran.If you stop and think;this team never promised you that they would go 16-0.They only said that they'd go to the SB.They say that every year no matter what.Any expectations that came from that were of your own doing.Win or lose,it's football. We all want a SB but we have to get through the season first.I hear a lot of Chicagoans have spent a whole lot of money to obtain SB tickets. That's on them.If I had the money I'd buy tickets to every SB no matter who's playing. Now I'm sure they feel like they wasted their money if the BEARS aren't going. But,they did that to themselves.Every year we hope it's our year.Let me ask you;if you can erase any season from your memory or didn't invest your time watching, what season would that be?We watched because we were BEARS fans first and foremost.Win or lose we'll be watching again next game and next year. And whatever we expect from them really came from our own expectations. That said,GO BEARS!!!

People forget that the media has more contact with the players and the players can't wait to talk to the media. We have so many people willing to talk about, whatever, because of the attention. There are way more media credential per team than ever because everything is a story.I remember when I was a kid my brothers and I would pretend to be a boxer and being interviewed. We'd get a big laugh by starting with "well,Howard"because that's who we'd be interviewed by.Howard Cosell. These guys were raised to be the center of attention.Everything's a story because everything sells. If the team from 85 proved anything; is that anyone and everyone can be the center of attention. What comes out of their mouths isn't always news-worthy.Sometimes it's just trash.

This team is in big trouble. The coaching staff under prepares this team on a regular basis. The QB and the running back are amonst the most unreliable in the league. The Defense is good, but can't stop the run. Specail teams is decent but can't seem 2 hold on 2 the ball. The 7 - 1 record is VERY misleading.

The '85 loss to Miami and last year's playoff loss to Carolina are more similar. In both cases, the Bears stubbornly stuck to their defensive set while opposing wide receivers ran wild.

By the way, the '63 Bears do not get enough credit. There were a lot of all-pros and even hall of famers on that team. Relative to the rest of the league, they were almost as good as the '85 Bears. They beat some legendary teams: the Lombardi Packers, the Gifford/Huff Giants and Unitas Colts. They had an incredible number of interceptions. Bill George invented the middle linebacker position. Doug Atkins was a physical freak who could play today and, of course, they had Ditka.

Instead of reporters asking lovie why urlacher was in the game at the end against miami, when he got injured; they ought to ask him why he risks injury to his star players by coaching them to hold ball carriers up and then second "tackler" to strip the ball. Everyone in the country saw urlacher do this against the cardinals, and every coach in the country probably told their team if someone does this to their ball carrier to knock them off the pile, or even to take their legs out from under them. Its supposed to be tackle football not texas hold'em up and strip the ball. If you can't force a fumble with a clean hit or strip the ball during a legitamate tackle, then don't whine when your star players get their legs chopped while gang stripping the ball. It should be an unsportsmanlike personal foul too when a team is coached to strip the ball this way. If the bears keep trying to do it, look for more injuries and eventually opposing teams will complain and the refs will start calling the plays dead because of stopped forward progress. Teams won't want their ball carriers stood up and risk having their legs taken out in the pile either, its just an all around cheap, bush league play. lovie should know better.

The 06 loss to the Dolphins. You can attribute 21 pts to the Hester fumble, the Grossman pick, and to the Gage fumble. It shows that little things can make a big diff. The Bears are not infallible, but until Miami, they were on pace to set a record for largest average victory margin of all time. They are an excellent team that is prone to have bad games.

This team has been tested once this year against Seattle.
I honestly feel that playing an easy schedule has made this Bears team too relaxed. Too many easy wins has softened this team.
But it is a damn good team, and I expect them to play awesome over the next month.

I doubt the loss had taught the Bears anything they didn't already know. The bears are like any of the other 31 teams. If they turn the ball over, they are probably going to lose. However, no matter what everbody decides what their weakness is, they are still better than most teams and should win their division.

In one word......NEITHER!!!

If a loss can be considered good, I would say the '85 one helped more. Da Bears were starting to get a little too cocky. The Super Bowl Shuffel had already been written and the video was actually shot the next day after the loss. At least the '85 Dolphins were a good team. And that game was on the road. Remember, when the playoffs started after the '85 season everyone pretty much assumed a rematch between the Bears and Dolphins in the SB.

Hey Frank, don't compare the Briggs situation to losing Wilbur Marshall. The Bears had Marshall for 2 more years after they won the Super Bowl as well as basically the entire '85 team (minus Leslie Frazier, D Coordinator Buddy Ryan) and they got a first round pick for Marshall from Washington. If the Bears lose Briggs to free agency they will get nothing in return.

The 2006 Bears defensive backs couldn't make a pimple on the rear of the 85 Bears defensive backs. What is toast Tillman doing on the team this year. There is no comparing the two teams. If they played each other today 85 would kick their butts. As far as the importance of the Miami games I think this years game shows just how weak they really are. At least in 85 the offense showed up.

they both suck....who thought of this great question, Telander?

C'mon already - there is no comparison between the '85 bears and the '06 bears. The '85 bears beat some very good teams to go 15-1. losing to Dan Marino is not quite the same as losing to the '06 Dolphins. The '85 Offensive Line may be the best there ever was, and you need look no further than the '06 ground game to quit with the comparisons.

I suspect if you simply traded the Bear's opponents - the '85 bears would be 16-0 in 2006, and the 2006 Bears would have been 11-5 against the '85 opponents. (This group would have lost to Marino also)

Chicago Fans are spoiled and you are always complaining! Every team in the NFL has a bad week, even the Colts who barely beat the Titans and the Bills. The '06 Bears proved that they are an elite team by beating the Giants in the Meadowlands and shutting down Eli.

To answer your question, the '85 loss was more devastating. They were singing the Super Bowl Shuffle before the season ended. How many teams would have the balls to even do a song like that before ending the season???
Stop complaining and give Lovie more credit. 21-5 the past two seasons??

To answer the question...as everybody else digresses....this years loss was more helpful. There was no way that thec'85 team was NOT going to win the Super Bowl. This years team has a lot of questions and needed a reality check. Still, they are the BEST team in the NFC right now!!

I think the loss was more beneficial this year. The loss in '85 was just devestating because people expected them to go 16-0. The loss in '06 wasn't unexpected since we knew they would lose at some point.

However, the loss to Miami seemed to re-ignite these Bears, especially Grossman, since they will never want to be embarrassed like this again.

The '85 Bears didn't need motivation, they were just naturally gifted, while the '06 Bears need that fire in their bellies. I don't think they can survive a game without having that fire all 60 minutes of the game.

In closing, GOOOOOO BEARS!!!!!! from Ty Zenker

I think that '85 Bears needed that loss to Miami so they could get motivated for the Playoffs. I think it saved them.
Go Bears!!
