MVP vote has Yankees fans ticked

| | Comments (20)

This is the first entry I've done by popular demand. Our White Sox beat writer Joe Cowley put Derek Jeter sixth on his MVP ballot, and Yankee Nation is not happy.

It was the lowest anybody voted Jeter, but the fact is unless Joe voted Jeter No. 1 on his ballot, Jeter still wouldn't have won the award. And Justin Morneau was not an undeserving choice.

If Joe had voted Jeter second, Jeter still would have finished second. Joe voted Jermaine Dye No. 2.

Joe said he voted the way he did because a Jeter-less Yankees still likely would have made the playoffs while the Twins wouldn't have had a shot without Morneau. It's an argument many voters share.

But it's not flying in the Big Apple.

Joe Cowley should not be allowed to vote for awards. I don't think Jeter should have won, but this is the 2nd year (2003 being the other) where Joe Cowley has turned his vote into a joke. This guy should have no business voting. He jeopardizes the integrity of the award.

way to go joe! Its your vote so use it the way you see it. Yankee fans and media need to get over themselves, no one really cares what they think about how each voter affected their pet players. Yankees just aren't that important once you get out of the bronx i guess, or out of the espn studios. If they think jeter is so great, why don't they just put up his statue now out in their little shrine and rub his head for good luck or something before games. Besides arod is a better shortstop and a more valuable player, he just needs to get out of new yourk so he can show it again.

Mr. Cowley,
you do a disservice to your profession. if you can't vote for baseball MVP intelligently perhaps a career change is in order.

Joe...You showed your true colors as a Yankee hater yesterday on Mike and the Maddog. When questioned about the MVP vote you had no facts to back up why you put him 6th. The best was how little you knew what Jeter did in the 5 game sweep against Boston. You should have your voting privileges stripped until you do your homework.

Joe Cowley has a lot of nerve leaving Mauer off the MVP ballot altogether and including AJ Pierzinski in his vote. This guy is NOT a serious sports writer. There is NO WAY AJ had a better year than Mauer. Hey Joe? Guess what? YOU screwed up!

Whaaaa!

I like jeter but, one thing that turned me off during the season was when he was asked about helping A-rod through his struggles and he replied that it was not his job to look out for A-rod and work on him. Well, yeah you are the team captian and it IS your job to try to hellp ALL players on your team not just the one's you like. Therefore I have no problem with him not making it as MVP. MVP'S try to help their teams win any way they can.

Joe...

I watched every televised Yanee game for the last decade. I wonder how many games you have watched with a journalist eye for fairness. Even though Jeter would not have won to Morneau who deserves to win, Jeter should have been at least second in most voting.

You have the audacity to go on the Mike and the Mad Dog show, which I did listen to your inverview, and flaunt your idiotic commentary and rationalization. Arod is better in the clutch! You gotta be related to Arod.
Clearly you wanted some attention and voted out of the mix. The other writers chose to stay professional and vote with the facts.
You showed your true colors as a Yankee hater yesterday on Mike and the Maddog.

I googled you and did not get a hit anywhere. No articles, no columns, "no nothing"! I guess you got your 15 minutes in the spotlight which is clearly your goal.

If you had disgrace yourself and voted Dye 6th, the sports fans in Chicago would call you out as well.

hey, Soriano is an ex-Yankee. I guess you can start the bad press on him now since you don't need facts to backup your commentary.

I am a Soriano fan as well. Is he better than Jeter?

Jeter should have at least been second? Sorry, Dye was clearly more deserving than than Jeter, as was Thomas. As far as the Chicago sports fans calling out Cowley if he voted Dye 6th, I don't think any true Sox fan would give a damn if he was 2nd, 3rd or 6th - - if he didn't win, placing doesn't mean a thing. Yankees fans must have a lot of time on their hands if they're complaining about Cowley's vote. I'd probably be more concerned about spending $200,000,000 with nothing to show for it.

YOU WATCHED EVERY GAME FOR 10 YEARS???...you need to get a life...The Yankees have a team of stars...The Twins wouldn't have made the playoffs without their MVP...Nuff said...It's about what the team would have been like WITHOUT that player...Stop crying ya babies...Didn't the Cory Lidle story teach you babies anything...IT'S ONLY A GAME...GET A LIFE!

Why are people like him even allowed to have a job? He's a baseball writer yet he knows nothing about baseball. Beat writers who follow one team all year should not be allowed to vote because they are obviously biased towards the division they see all year. The people that should vote for these awards are people that know the game, not people who just write about the game. The Peter Gammon's and the Buster Olney's of the world should be voting for these awards, because they can at least be objective, unlike this idiot Cowley.

OH, GOOD GOD. EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET A COLLECTIVE LIFE. IT'S A VOTE BY 1 SPORTSWRITER!!! DO YOU JETER LOVERS THINK HE REALLY CARES?

Hello? This is a CHICAGO paper! Who gives a crap about the NEW YORK Yankees or their MOST VISIBLE POUTER?

DOC may be right when it comes to perception .Sam Smith of that other rag referred to Curry and his GANG for perpetuating the use of headbands as a fashion statement or such when they were here as a deciding factor in disallowing it. Some people say it's the race card and racism rearing it's head but why is it always decided that it's never about race? When is it about race? Has there ever been a situation where it might have been about race? I know this is a sports blog and really want to keep it that way. But sometimes race does enter to an equation when it comes to sport.Just a thought.

Hi Joe,
I read your work occasionally and enjoy it very much. I'm a newspaper
fiend and I wish you had more ink in the Times each week.
I'm from the New York area and have listened to Mike and the Mad Dog for
years. I heard the interview with them on Tuesday and thought your points were great. I don't know how familiar you are with those guys but they
obvously shoot from the hip and think their opinions are the end all. That's
part of why they're so successful on the air because so many New Yorkers
disagree with them.
They took some cheap shots at you after the interview ended, which is par for the course. It was one of the best conversations I've heard on WFAN in a long time and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Great radio.
Check out Adam Marchand's short review of the interview on the New York Post web site from
Friday and he echos my thoughts.
Keep up the good work and hope to hear you on the air again.

I am a die hard Yankees fan and a huge fan of Derek Jeter. I believe Jeter should have won the MVP but would have accepted the award if someone more deserving won the award. No offense, Morneau was batting .250 through a third of the season. But that is not my decision...to me what bothered me the most with Joe's point of views, he contradicted everything he said. The thing that killed me the most was that he had no idea what Jeter did in the 9th inning of the Friday night game at Fenway Park. To me, that was Jeter's most clutch hit this season and it did, in fact lead his team to a huge series victory. Also, Joe brought up what Jeter did in the postseason...it is not a postseason award. Hate the Yankees for whatever reasons you want, but be a professional and respect your position with a vote for a prominent award.

Most Visible Pouter????? Are these guys for real? I dont care who you are, Derek Jeter is the least likely to pout...he is by far the most professional an athlete can be. He hates losing...I guess you don't hate losing but to say he is a pouter obviously tells me that you don't know sports.

if i had a kid I would want him to be like derek jeter. He is as proffesional as they get.the mvp means nothing to him.all he wants is the rings. You can hate the yankees but jeter is still a 1st class person.get over it he has.ps.that writer is a joke.

whoever said the guy who has "watched every yankee game for a decade should get a life" needs to understand that that's what real fans do. at least real yankee fans do that. but then again, watching chicago baseball is generally not that fun, is it?

A REAL MVP travesty is how the Yankees' Joe Gordon won the award in 1942 over Ted Williams, who "only" won the Triple Crown and beat Gordon handily in every offensive category.
