As Sun-Times baseball expert Chris De Luca points out, all of the talk about the Cubs getting Alex Rodriguez hinges on dealing the Cubs' only untradeable commodity: Carlos Zambrano.
Are there any Cubs fans out there who would make that deal?
Why trade your only sure thing piching for someone who may be on a decline.Right about now,the Yanks want to give A-Rod away.Only takers would be a dumba$$.Now,for Wood, maybe.
With the dearth of quality pitching around, it would make no sense to trade one of the top pitchers in the league for that head case ARod. Now if the Yanks wanted Prior and Wood for the head case, I'm all for it. Instead the Cubs should go after free agents Soriano, and/or Carlos Lee and re sign Ramirez, and try to get a starter and reliever too. They might have to spend some money though. Without any major acquisitions it'll be another horrendous year in 2007.
forget about may-rod and get alfonso soriano. matt murton and ryan theriot could be used at the top of the order. both are quick and draw walks, juan pierre is overrated and should be let go. pitching could be coming with donald veal and sean gallagher and mark pawelek down the road. what about eric patterson and felix pie? will they ever play?
i like pinnelia but only if a team is in place to win now, the cubs have so many holes, they are playing the yankees game without the money. free agents will never be the answer long term but since the cubs insist they are close soriano is the best bet. but i think it should have been girardi and a complete overhaul. don't get rid of murton though.
Yes, I'd make that deal A.S.A.P. That would give the Cubs the best infield, hitting wise in the majors. D. Lee, Ramirez and A-Rod! Pitching is very important, true, but you need to score runs in order to win games. We scored runs in 2003 remember?
Trading for A-Rod would be a great trade, but not at the expense of giving up Carlos. Pitching is the key to championships. And Carlos is the only main key the cubs hold when it comes to pitching. We got a good third baseman as it is all we have to do is keep him. We need Five Ace starters. Not somebody who is at their peak as in a Randy Johnson ( who is agruably one of the best there has ever been but is now breaking down. We need starters that can be 1 or 2 starters on any team out there. Then we need a tight bullpen. When I mean tight one that when you hand the ball over with a lead you know that the job will get done.
As for the offense. A-rod could help us in that stat but at the same time A-ram is pretty close in the stats when comparing to A-rod. So in closing A-rod would be a great addition but not at the cost of losing the Z-man.
There is no way I'd trade Carlos Zambrano for Alex Rodriquez or anyone else. As a matter of fact, here is my short list of CUB untradeables (and I do mean short): Derrick Lee, Carlos Zambrano, Rich Hill, Ryan Theriot. For me, the rest of the Cubs can be reasonably used for trade bait. I hesitate to list Ariamis Ramirez as untradeable because I seriously question his desire to hustle in spite of the obvious fly ball out, etc...(you just never know what will happen). I do not include Jacque Jones because of concerns about his base running. Ryan Theiot is the Cubs 2nd baseman for many years to come and, possibly their actual lead off hitter should Pierre leave (which I think he will). And Rich Hill is the real deal and he will become the No. 2 starter behind Carlos Zambrano. Also, I believe the Mark Prior fully recover and become the No.3/4 starter.
Forget the pipe dream of A-Rod becoming a Cub, because it is not worth Zambrano and the package that would be necessary to get him, let alone him approving a trade. Getting Soriano makes Murton your fourth outfielder; losing Pierre creates a hole in CF again. Soriano/Theriot would be a solid 1-2. And forget Zito--we have Zito wannabes in Marshall and Hill. Get me a cheaper option who pitches alot of innings (like Suppan and Maddux). Yes, I did suggest of having Maddux come back.
I would trade Zambrano for A-Rod. But the next question is I would go after Carlos Lee or Soriano. Na d to finish things off I would go after Schmidt instead of Zito. look at how that line up will be (Piere,Soriano,A-rod,DLee,(The 3rd baseman I hate to say his name)Barrett, jones, and Cedeno. the pitching stuff would look really awesome as well. Schmidt, hill, mormal and a veteranand hopefully Prior will come back and Wood as the closer. WOW I should be a GM
i would,nt trade big z period.especially since in all probability prior will pull his same old tired act again in spring training.the cubs need to stockpile some pitchers asap.i doubt lou will be happy with a rotation of marmol, guzman, and the other young guns that have,nt been able to produce no way jose.
Forget A-Rod!! If they manage to get Soriano, well, they would be just fine offensively. Give the 2nd base job to Theriot until he loses it and keep Izturis at shortstop. With Murton in left, Soriano in center and Jacque Jones in right, the outfield is set. Ramirez, Izturis, Theriot and Lee in the infield with Barrett behind the plate gives you a balance of speed and power. Keep Henry Blanco as a back-up catcher and use that money your dreaming of throwing around for A-Rod to have a strong bench, a starting rotation that will give you quality innings and upgrade the middle relief corps. And what Carlos Lee gives you on offense he gives back on defense so nix to going after him. Sweet Lou said "we're gonna win here" which is the same statement made by many of his predecessors. Sorry, Lou, but Cub fans have heard that song before and you'll have trouble getting anyone to listen until the Cubs are 5 games up with 4 to play.
The Yankees want to dump A-Rods salary. The Cubs would be doing them a favor, taking him off their hands. The Yanks need to spend money on pitching. Put together a package of young pitchers and you can get A-Rod. Don't forget, he'll probably only okay a trade to the Cubs or the Angels. Stick A-Rod at SS and watch him put up huge Hall of Fame numbers at Wrigley for the next 10 years.
Cubs fans: Would you trade Zambrano for Jose Contreras and Mark Buehrle? Contreras and Buehrle would combine for 28-30 wins and around 60-65 starts. They are durable, reliable and better than most of the other pitchers in the NL Central. Zambrano, at best, will win 18-20. Sign free agents Barry Zito and Jeff Suppan and your rotaton is: Zito, Contreras, Buehrle, Suppan, Hill. That might be the best rotation in a weak NL. If Prior stays healthy, you have six quality starters. It's a trade that helps both teams. The Sox have one too many starters and can afford a 2-for-1 swap.
Just what cubs would need? Right, another over paid under achiever. ARod is not a team player regardless of regular season stats. Doesn't make his team better. When clutch is needed, ARod chokes.Cubs have enough history of choking & don't need to add possibly the biggest one in mlb history!
wait a minute folks Carlos is a good pitcher but that's about it. he's not a superstar he's closer to a head case i think then A-Rod is. I am a die hard cub fan and i dont think anyone on that team is not trade bait besides D-Lee. that's not to say ARod is the answer but Carlos is not untouchable not even close...yet
Remember last year's hot offseason trade rumor, Prior for Tejada? At the time, everyone had their undies in a bunch at the thought of trading Prior, but I'll bet a lot of people now wish the Cubs would have been able to pull that one off.
Seriously, I don't know why everyone is so upset about the thought of trading Zambrano. The way Dusty overworked him the last four years (I think he has thrown the most pitches in MLB over that period), his arm is going to fall off one of these days. Better to let that be someone else's problem.
The reason yankees didn't fire torre and hire lou was because of jeter arod riff and liklihood that arod may need to go. So no lou to yanks and he falls in cubs lap. Arod has no trade clause, who do you think he wants to play for???
I wouldn't trade z for arod. I would trade prior and that may be enough with one other minor league pitcher and maybe cedano.
If this trade were made, the GM would be run out of town. Z is the only good thing (oops...sorry D. Lee)that has happened to the Cubs since the year of Bartman. A-Rod will give you numbers, but his career has shown that he cannot lead a team to a championship.
I think it would be crazy to give away Big Z but how about this line up
1.Juan Pierre CF 2.Alfonzo Soriano 2B 3.Derek Lee 1B 4.Aramis Ramirez 3B 5.Carlos Lee LF 6.Jacque Jones RF 7. Michael Barret C 8.Cesar Izturis SS 9. any pitcher (BIG Z, Rich HILL, ZITO, Schmidt, Suppan)

That trade would rank up there with Lou Brock as 1 of the worst trades in chicago history

It won't make a difference cuz teh Cubs are garbage anyway!!!!!!
Try and get AROD for Zambrano, Wood or Prior. Let them pick which one they want and get the deal done. It would be a perfect fit.

Jim Hendry, Wood and Prior for A-Rod?
Get rid of all the dead weight
