Sox won't repeat, but not from a lack of trying

It says here one of the windfalls of winning a World Series - especially in this town - is reaping the benefit of a doubt for at least the following season. And considering the White Sox are 20 games over .500 heading into tonight's action, that's not too much to ask.

Nobody really thought the Sox would repeat. Did you? On April 1, I wrotehttp://blogs.suntimes.com/cgi-bin/mt.cgi?__mode=view&_type=entry&id=506&blog_id=20
that the Sox wouldn't repeat but the Cubs would repeat their struggles of last season. It wasn't exactly going out on a limb, but it seemed reasonable.

If not for the Tigers, who nobody thought would be this good, the Sox would be battling for another division title. In any other division, they'd be at the top or barely in second. Not bad.

In the last 27 years, only the Yankees (98-00) and Blue Jays (92-93) have repeated as World Series champs.

The Sox are having another very good season, but it's obvious their mojo is a little less magical than last season's. Mark Buehrle's six-game losing streak and costly balk Monday are evidence.

It would be hard to accuse Ken Williams of not making enough moves to repeat. It's not like he stood pat since last year's parade. He picked up Jim Thome and Javier Vazquez, who everyone thought were good acquisitions at the time.

Last year, Williams was ripped for not acquiring Ken Griffey Jr., but he still won the title.

He's obviously not afraid to make moves, and I think Sox fans should be happy he didn't trade Brandon McCarthy.

The Sox probably aren't going to repeat. But they're giving it a shot. A good shot.

It's too early to judge whether or not they'll repeat or not.

The White Sox are subject to an incredibly talented group of teams this year. I personally believe that they have an excellent shot of making the post season regardless if they have to play the Yankees or not.

The Yankees haven't exactly been the most clutch post season team in recent years anyway.

Hell, we shouldn't even be having this discussion yet - it's only early August!

Kudos to Detroit and Minnesota who's been playing well and destroying their young talent (Verlander and Liriano) by driving their arms into the ground.

I'm really not all that concerned. Boston just lost a huge leader in Jason Veritek - a huge blow to their pitching as well.

The White Sox came from behind to beat the Yanks tonight. They need to win five out of their next six to build their confidence. If they can do that, anything is possible.

It's all just beginning. Too early to close the door on the POSSIBLE repeating champs!

It's too early for people to write off the Sox. It's amazing to see so many jumping off the bandwagon. I say keep going and don't stop until it passes you all by. We're still going to make a run and at least make the wild card. That's all we can ask. Go Sox

The white sox lack of clutch hits & starting pitching that can at least give a quality start will be sox doom for 06. After seeing both happen in sox defeat vs yanks on wed. Thome left tying & go ahead runs aboard in ninth.Had bases loaded nobody out earlier in game & failed to score also killed sox chances.Crede hit a 3 run homer but the choke jobs by Anderson,AJ,(Mr.punch & judi )Cintron & Thome gave yanks the win.Sox need to show they can win on a continued basis games like on wed. to reach playoffs.GM williams obiviously was asleep around 7-31 !

The Sox have a great chance of making the postseason... just like Boston, Minesota and New York. Don't forget Detroit, but lets admit it... they are in.

Kenny couldn't do anything at the deadline w/o giving up his prized young talent, which for what was available at the time, CERTAINLY, was not worth it. Who would you replace anyway? A 5th starter? Who was better than what we have and available???

If the Sox can take care of their division games vs. the Twins and Tigers, they will get in as the WC.

Believe.

The Sox have won 4 series in a row...I think they are on the right track...It is going to be an exciting race to the playoffs...I love this stuff!!!

Hey Mariotti wherever you are...yer column yesterday was a lousy plagaristic attempt to copy what I wrote in these blogs last week...The Sox thrive on having an enemy...
here it is Jay Jay, written July 30,2006 at 8:28 AM...
"The Twins can not win on the road so end of that story...All you Sox haters who are jumping off the bandwagon now because you have a 3 year old kids "I Want It Nowww" attitude, stay off the bandwagon and go collect USFL memorabilia...That should keep you anal retentive cry babies busy...Anyway haters, the Sox will soon develop the "Us against Them" mentality and make the playoffs...Personally, I'm glad there is a close race...It keeps it interesting...Until next time you snivvlers...!!!

Use yer own ideas Jay ya hack...Or maybe get me a job!!!...Go Sox!!!

Getting in the playoffs is the second goal (winning the division would be first) and that's what the sox have now. Once you're in, as Wild Cards have proven, you're in. I think whoever is in can win.

Hendrickson reminds me of every clueless, negative Sox "fan" I've ever encountered in 45 years of following the team. It never fails - gloom and doom prevails. It would be funny if it weren't so lame and embarassing. Taken a gander at 95% of the other MLB teams, Joey? Knock it off already and let the season play out. It's called a pennant race.

Let's keep in mind that on August 11, 2005 the Sox were 12.5 games up over Clevland. A month later Clevland was within 2.5. Lots of time left and Detroit is about to start feeling the pressure. Another win today and the race is on.

SOX GOT A GREAT CHANCE OF RUNNING THE TABLE

Too early to say this. I agree that there has been inconsistent starting pitching but, realistically, which team in the AL has 5 reliable, first rate starters? It's a short list of 0. If our starters get into a grove, they Easily could repeat. Go Sox!

You say that in any other division they'd be at the top or barely in second. Isn't that exactly where they are? 7 and a half back in august isn't exactly hopeless and they are in front in the wild card.

Isn't this great! After all of those bad years we have a team that not only won a world series but continues to be a serious contender, and for years to come! The fact that we're all talking about this in a serious way...isn't it great!

All i have to say is that its too soon for the nonbelivers to start counting the sox out. This is the time of the season when they really put the pressure on i dont really think detroit will stand tall the rest of the season the sox still have a great chance. Go sox!

I'd bet the ranch that they don't repeat. I've seen problems with this team (in spite of their great WL record) since the beginning of the season. They haven't been executing. The starting pitching has been a nightmare, the defense has been spotty, they've forgotten how to bunt and hit and run.

They've compiled a really nice record by pounding out dingers, true, but winning ugly usually doesn't carry a team through to victory in October.

Get back to smartball, or smallball, or Ozzieball, or whatever you want to call it, White sox, and you can take the Division and the World Series.

If you don't, then I guess it's "Wait till next year."

its over folks. our season is over...mark my words. Lets just be happy we all got to see a world series last year and be done with it. This team does not have what it takes to even make the playoffs, let alone repeat. Last year was our 85 Bears...and thats all it will ever be, get used to it. Prepare yourselves for another second half tail spin to a third place finish.

Unsolicited advice to Ozzie from a guy who has been a Sox fan since the days of Luke Appling playing shortstop (circa, 1950): 1) keep Dye in the three hole when Thome comes back; 2) tell Anderson the centerfield job is his; he'll save games with his fielding and will hit .275+ if he doesn't jerk back and forth to the bench; 3) put Pod on the bench; he hurts the team with his: poor on base %, the diving catches he attempts that turn singles into doubles and triples and his 16 times caught stealing; 4) platoon Mackoviak and Ozuna in left until they prove they are not the .300+ hitters they have been all year; 5) move Crede to #5 in the order and Thome to #6; Thome will strike out 200+ times this season; get him to stop swinging at pitches at his shoulders; 6) for a few games, instruct Uribe to not swing at a pitch until he has two called strikes; nobody on the team swings at more bad pitches and the pitchers know that; 7) give McCarthy the #5 start and move Vasquez to the long relief spot; Javier is good for four or five innings and will make a good middle reliever; McCarthy will be an all- star by 2008 if you give him a regular spot.

Good luck at making the playoffs. Frank

the biggest problem is the sox giving up 3-4 runs early! burlhe isn't right . garcia &vasquez are soft. ozzie has been constantly out managed. it is also hard to belive mcCarthy would be worse than 3 of the sox starters. SOX WILL FALL JUST SHORT in my opion

The Sox are in a dogfight division. It's amazing that they have a better record than the first place team in the West (A's) and the second place team in the East (Boston) and almost a better record than the first place team in that division (Yankees) yet the Sox are in THIRD in the Central and a half game out of the wild card.
