U.S. cures World Cup fever

I was getting ready for the 11:15 a.m. meeting today when a primal scream roared from the city-desk side of the newsroom. I looked up to see the Czechs celebrating their first goal over the U.S. So much for converting casual sports fans to soccer.

Some people compare soccer to hockey, but at least in hockey when there's no scoring, there's hitting and fighting. In soccer, there's just running and running.

It may be the most popular sport in the world, but it's not for everybody, which is fine. Soccer fans don't need mass appeal in the U.S. to validate their passion. And they don't need a successful U.S. team to keep their interest in the Cup.

And that's a good thing, on both accounts.

I believe the US has had the antidote for any soccer fever for eons. It's called real sports. Like baseball.

Baseball? Bah...I'm waiting for football.

Yes Baseball, that's non-stop excitement...

But you're absolutely right us "Soccer" fans don't give a damn whether the Americans get it or not, besides where would you stick the commercials?

Baseball?!?! That's not even a sport. I'm sorry but fat people chewing tobacco doesn't seem sporty to me. Football, basketball, hockey, soccer... doesn't matter if it appeals to you or not, but at least it's a sport.

hey mikey, i like to see you run around for 45 minutes at a time, twice a day while everyone is after you.do you know many knees ,ankles, and ligaments have been broke because of this "non-sport".i understand its not the most interesting thing to watch, but believe it boys its a very physically demanding sport.

Don't worry.. it'll take a while, but you'll get it. And when you do it'll be the best sport you've ever known.

Homer Simpson's doctor told him to stop drinking and Homer went to a baseball game. When he was there for a while he said: I didn't know this was that booooring!. You don't like soccer because it's not part of your culture and I understand that but also in your mind you can't realize than in a game like soccer nobody score and finishes tied. In America has to be a winner and a loser that's the mentality. That's why you create a soccer league (MLS) and invent the shout outs to have a winner and a loser. By the way, congratulation to the White Sox, world series champion (USA HAS WON ALL THE WORLD SERIES, it's amazing!!!
By the way. viva el futbol,

Victor, try getting your quotes right. Homer said, "I never realized how boring this game is." In addition, the Simpsons ripped Soccer far more than baseball for being boring...soccer was so boring it drove the crowd to riot. Half of your evidence has now been destroyed. Also, there are many many ties in the NHL...so there goes the rest of your evidence. Finally, regarding baseball, MLB is stacked with international players...and yes, most of the best players....similar to the NBA. Your opinion bears no weight since you lost all credibility with your foolish examples. Don't post another message unless it possesses evidence of intelligence.

It's so typical....Soccer fans claim they don't care most Americans dislike soccer...yet when a columnist writes that point of view...the soccer fans go nuts on the blogs...Face it...Soccer will NEVER be big in the USA...Our best athletes play baseball, football and basketball..Soccer is a game played by children over here...Believe me, we understand the game...BUT we still don't like it..very boring..Lacrosse is replacing soccer here in the USA on the sports food chain..

The Aussies were even more anti-soccer than the US was until they started winning. It's a pretty new game in their country too, but the opportunity gloat over other nations was a real draw once they started getting better. Apparently, they took to the streets to celebrate their recent victory over Japan. Twenty years ago, they were referring to the game as "Sheila ball". Funny how winning changes things.

The main problem with soccer in the US is that it is still a suburban/middle class game. Working class kids from the city don't have much access to the game and that rules out our pool of best athletes. Start growing the game slowly in working class neighborhoods and the ghetto and we'll have the type of kids playing who can beat world powers. With that kind of success the sport can take off. Who wouldn't like to completely embarrass France or Iran with the entire world watching? Try it, you might like the site of the French pulling their hair out because we scored a goal in the 89th minute. You can't do that with our current sports lineup. Honestly, I give it 20-30 years to develop the game to that level.

I'm writing in about Jay Mariotti's suggestion that we not wake him during the next world cup. Just wanted to say I'm fine with that. Leave him alone in his trailer wherever he's washed up to by then.

Or, if he hasn't drifted into a premature retirement, maybe you can demote him to the second team covering the NHL.

Anyway, with the world cup ratings higher than the hockey finals, we all know the future's coming. Jay wrote this morning that he wants no part of it. I'm eager to hear how you'll be granting his wish.

I wonder. Who will win a championship first? The Cubs or the US National soccer team... I'm betting on the soccer team!.. Order your hundred years of frustation uniform patch early. They are going fast.....

The US Soccer team DOES have a future: Freddy Adu. But he must leave the US and go the premier leagues of Europe. If the US wants to compete at least five of their players must compete in the UEFA premier leauge.
