Meet our new White Sox writer

You may have noticed - in fact, I'm sure you've noticed if you even glance at our sports section - that we have a new writer on staff. He's been impossible to miss, and spring training barely has started.

Joe Cowley is our new beat writer, but he's hardly new to the area. He covered the Sox for the Daily Southtown for many years, and we're lucky to have him.

Despite working at a smaller paper, Cowley made a name for himself among peers and fans with an ulta-aggressive reportorial style. And he has the most important quality for any beat writer, he's able to establish relationships that produce exclusive news.

Cowley has great instincts. In Thursday's paper, for instance, his story on Mark Buehrle sizing up the Indians was the most compelling story to come out of Sox camp so far.

Cowley's more than a stud reporter, he's a survivor. His battle against cancer has been well documented. I called him the other day to see if he would guest on a radio show I was co-hosting. Since he's in Arizona, I didn't want to call too early, but he said he gets up at 6:45 to work out.

He's a serious guy, and it shows in his work.

I have enjoyed Joes writing in the southtown and welcome him to the suntimes.

After watching Olypics for all of two weeks now, particularly \the ice programs.i am only reminded of Three little words.....Que.Sera..Sera....

GREAT hire by the Sun-Times. Cowley calls it like it is and he'll be another in a long string of great Chicago sports minds from NW Indiana.

His articles will no longer be a rumor to Chicago - they'll be up front and in your face - in the bright one... the Chicago Sun-Times!

Booya!

Dear Joe, Please remember that love of the white sox should be your ultimate theme in all articles. So please avoid the trash which is coming out of Oakland. Notice that nothing even remotely like that is coming out of Philly! Aaron didn't put up great numbers, but he was a great Sox!

Is this the same Joe Cowley who threw a no-hitter for the Sox back in '86 at California?

Hey Joe I don't mind if you trash the cubs here and there and ever where Sox pride till I die

Hey Joe congratulations on the new hire. As a Daily Southtown subscriber I will surely miss your excellent columns and insight in the Southtown. I guess I'll have to venture over to the Sun-Times website from time to time.

I'm boycotting the Sun-Times until Jay Mariotti leaves or gets the axe. I wish Jay didn't have such an axe to grind with the White Sox organization, he could be an awesome writer if he would just give the poison pen stuff a rest.

That's why I loved Cowley's columns in the Daily Southtown. Joe always gave the Sox a fair shake in the press.

Joe seems like a good guy but he does have to own up to 2 stories...

- remember the infamous Sirotka trade for David Wells where the Blue Jays were demanding players since Sirotka was damaged goods. Cowley came up with a story with a list of players the Blue Jays could pick from which turned out to be the list of young players the Sox would NOT agree to (Crede, etc).
- and just last week, Cowley made it sound like Anderson's wrist was about to fall apart and was talking about fallback positions.
Joe...a little leg work also helps.

Speaking of the White Sox, check out www.palehosesix.blogspot.com.

You White Sox fans will LOVE it.

why is it when a sports writer blast ozzie thats ok but ozzie has a slip of the tongue he is blasted to high heaven. If ozzie is suspended and fine so should jay m. or does the sun times to protected of this person.his job is to report the news in sports and not be in them.what did he think when he insults people they would be like him and tuck tale and hide.he should be reprimanded for his part in this incident.

How can I take this Joe Cowley clown seriously? He voted Jeter 6th for the AL MVP? Obviously he has a personal agenda. This guy should go back to writing for his small town paper covering Bingo games and pie eating contests

Don't take any crap from Keith Olbermann. I can EASILY think of 5 guys who had better years than Jeter.

Joe Cowley should not be allowed to vote for awards. I don't think Jeter should have won, but this is the 2nd year (2003 being the other) where Joe Cowley has turned his vote into a joke. This guy should have no business voting. He jeopardizes the integrity of the award.
