Wells Thompson suspended for Saturday's game

The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Fire defender Wells Thompson for the team's game in Montreal Saturday and fined him an undisclosed amount for his challenge on Columbus midfielder Agustín Viana in the 12th minute of the Fire's 1-0 win over the Crew on Sunday.

Thompson was issued a yellow card after the play. But after review this week, the Disciplinary Committee unanimously decided to levy further punishment on Thompson.

Though he is listed as an outside midfielder, Thompson has started the past four straight games as an outside back for the Fire.

Since being inserted into the starting lineup, Thompson has been one of the team's most effective players, even during its struggles earlier this season. He has played well on the right side in combination with outside midfielder Patrick Nyarko and has proven to be effective as an overlapping outside back.
