The Fire announced Monday that midfielder Victor Pineda had been selected by the United States' Under-20 team for its camp in Carson, Calif. Pineda arrived in Carson on Monday in time for the team's evening training session.
Pineda will miss the Fire's game in Montreal against the Impact.
The U-20 training camp is intended to ready the team for this June's FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. The United States has drawn Group A--the tournaments most difficult--and will play Spain in Istanbul on June 21, France in Istanbul on June 24 and Ghana in Kayseri on June 27.
Pineda has been a fixture for his national team class, but there was some speculation that could miss the U-20 World Cup. This offseason Pineda had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. His rehab kept him out of the 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
In six appearances for the U-20 team in 2012, Pineda tallied three goals and one assist. Pineda is the first homegrown player in Fire history and a native of Bolingbrook.
