By virtue of a 1-1 tie between Sporting Kansas City and the Columbus Crew on Sunday, the Fire have clinched a spot in the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs.
It is the first time the Fire has earned a birth in the playoffs since 2009.
The Fire still has a chance to win the Eastern Conference as it sits three points behind Sporting. The team would need Kansas City to lose at least one of its remaining two games and the Fire would likely have to win both of their remaining regular-season games in order to secure home field advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs.
With a win Oct. 20 at New England and a New York Red Bulls loss in one of its remaining two games, the Fire would clinch one of the top-three spots in the Eastern Conference and avoid the single-elimination playoff game played between the fourth and fifth seeds.
