As expected after the Fire's 2-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo in the Eastern Conference play-in game at Toyota Park, the mood inside the home team's locker room was somber.
But some good news emerged from what was otherwise a forgettable night.
Center back Arne Friedrich indicated that he was optimistic about returning to Chicago. Friedrich, a World Cup veteran who played nearly 10 swith the German national team, signed with the Fire this preseason for one year.
"I feel really good here but I cannot say anything because nothing is done so far and we've got to come together," Friedrich said. "We've got to talk about that but I definitely can imagine to stay.
"I guess both sides would like to stay together and there's definitely a chance."
Friedrich also said that if he was unable to re-sign with the Fire, he would consider retirement and that he was not talking to any other clubs.
"I will never play again in Europe," Friedrich said. "So this time is over and I appreciate the time in Chicago. I had a wonderful time. It's a wonderful club, very professional good people here and I like the city. So if I play one more year, then here in Chicago."
