Fire center back Arne Friedrich will sit out Saturday's game against the Columbus Crew at Toyota Park and hopes to be able to return to action when the team travels to Livestrong Sporting Park to take on Sporting Kansas City on June 29.
Friedrich, the German national and World Cup veteran, strained his hamstring in the Fire's 2-1 home win over Sporting Kansas City on May 12. Friedrich was supposed to return for the team's 3-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at Toyota Park Sunday but had a setback that had exclusively to do with his fitness.
Luckily the setback had nothing to do with his recovery from the actual injury. Friedrich has underscored for at least a week now that his hamstring has felt good.
In his first full training session with the team Wednesday, he was active and looked normal going up for head balls on a number of occasions. Having sat out some five weeks, Friedrich said after training the remainder of this week and all of next week he expects to be able to play a full 90 minutes in Kansas City.
"I need a week to train with the team to get a little bit of fitness and then I'll be back," Friedrich said.
"I don't feel anything with the hamstring so I'm pretty happy and I hope I could help the team as soon as possible."
