Players of the night

Pitching

Brian Bannister - Royals
@ Rays
7 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 7 K

Pro baseball players probably aren't the smartest group, but Bannister bucks the trend. He might be the most sabermetricly inclined player in the majors. So far, it's has paid off for him this year.

Bannister will never be a real world or fantasy star, but he is dependable. His numbers in '09 - 7 wins, 3.6 ERA, 1.28 WHIP - are rock solid.

He's hot, too. In his last seven starts, Bannister has a 2.58 ERA.

More, after the jump...

Hitting

CF Melky Cabrera - Yankees
@ White Sox
4-5, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R

A 9th-inning line drive over Jermaine Dye's head gave Cabrera the cycle. Between this and Andrew McCutchen's three home runs, it was a quite a weekend for baseball milestones.
