League preview: Boston Massacre

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)

As you may have heard, Matt and I finally got around to setting up our own fantasy league. We held our first ever fantasy baseball draft last month, and it was a lot of fun. Nothing like some quality smack talk to start off the year. In the days leading up to the start of the season, we'll be taking a quick look at each team in our league.

Next up is Boston Massacre. Come behold the power of screen shots...

First pick: 1B Ryan Howard - Phillies (10th overall)
Best value: 1B Travis Hafner - Indians (270 overall)

If I were doing this preview before the season started, Hafner likely would have been an afterthought. But through two weeks, it looks like the old Pronk is back. He has eight hits and three homers in his first 28 at-bats. It's still early, but the early returns look good for a guy who was the fourth to last pick in our league.

Regardless of what Hafner does the rest of the year, Boston Massacre's chances likely rest of the Philadelphia duo of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, his first two picks. One guy to watch on BM's squad as the season progresses is Orioles catcher Matt Wieters. Wieters is considered one of the five best prospects in baseball, and should be up in the bigs next month.

BM's pitching staff is made up of Roy Oswalt and a collection of No. 2 starters. Scott Baker and Andy Pettitte will try to hold down the fort until John Lackey returns from the DL. And though he was dreadful once already this year, Chien-Ming Wang should bounce back. BM also has maybe the best closer in the AL, Kansas City's Joakim Soria.
