Spike Jones was my dad's favorites and we had a lot of records. One of the first songs I sang was Pimples and Braces.

I can't stand it anymore--it's driving me sane. (Spike Jones)

Thank you so much for the memories of Spike.

Although I only saw Spike Jones and the City Slickers on tv when I was younger than 7, their comic zest plucks my primordial dna.

I learned to loved jazz from my father, who died when I was 14. Watching these clips feels like being with him. The spirit of jazz is uncompromised and the comedy is like transcendental meditation for the soul.

Fun Fact about Spike Jones and his City Slickers....

A member of the City Slickers came to have a somewhat prominent role in Chicago Broadcasting history...

Carl "Stormy" Greyson, who I believe was featured singing in "Cocktails for two",
(if not in the video posted above), was a staff announcer at WGN Radio and TV, and of course a foil for "Uncle" Bobby Collins.

Roger - Thanks for the kind words. Best, SJ2.

Ebert: Thank you for your great work in bringing your dad's classic work to DVD. I saw him in person once in Urbana. Unforgettable. LMAO. And they were all great musicians.

Hate to be Mr. Know-It-All, but ...

Carl Greyson of WGN was never with Spike Jones's band.

The singer of "Cocktails For Two" was Carl Grayson.
Different fellow, who had a sad, turbulent history with the band.

Details can be found in Jordan Young's book, Spike Jones - On The Record, published by BearManor Media, the definitive reference work on the City Slickers/ Band That Plays For Fun.

Young has taken this book through three revisions, each one bigger and more informative than the last.

Istill don't know how to link to things, so just go to BearManor Media, which has a list of offerings that will knock you out (to say nothing of putting a dent in your wallet).
