The Tree of Life (2011) Directed by Terrence Malick. Starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Fiona Shaw. Synopsis: "The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life." Release Date May 27, 2011.
The First Movie (2010) Mark Cousin's brilliant documentary feature "The First Movie" opened in cinemas across the UK back in October 2010. The film records his visit to Goptapa in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, which was the subject of a horrendous chemical assault in 1988, part of Saddam Hussein's genocidal assault upon the Kurds. He hands out some digital video cameras to the children and asks them to make their own films which results in some remarkable and inspiring footage, and powerfully candid stories from their mothers and grandmothers about what happened during Saddam's murderous reign. NOTE: The First Movie was produced out of Edinburgh, Scotland. The director is Irish, the producers are Scottish and Canadian, the onscreen kids, translator, security and production managers are Kurdish, the editor is German, the sound recordist is Canadian and the composer is Canadian-Hong-Kongese. William Garrow championed the downtrodden and powerless in 18th-century England as a passionate young barrister who ignited a courtroom revolution. Taking on the established legal practices and smug inertia of the courts, Garrow pioneered the art of cross-examination as an advocate for the accused. Based on a true story and drawing on actual court records from the Old Bailey. Garrow's Law: Tales From The Old Bailey - season 1 is now set to air on the Knowledge Network this January 9, 16, 23, 30th 2011. Ie: the Production actually made these files and uploaded them onto You Tube! :-)
WARNING: clip contains some male nudity - but they're not torturing Santa in this scene: he was covered in mud, they're washing him like car. I'd describe the film as "playfully dark."

Pixar finally has some serious has competition. I'm hoping this means we'll be treated to twice-as-many good animated movies. - Marie (Now watch; I'll be wrong, Roger will hate it, it'll turn out to be a streaming pile, chuckle! But I laughed at the scene with the hawk. It reminds me of the fate of the pigeon in that animated short "Pigeon Impossible." :-)
"I want to tread carefully here, and not because I might step on a Lilliputian and squish him. I want to explain who "Gulliver's Travels" is for, and who it might not be for. One person it is definitely for is Gloria DeMent, the 84-year-old grandmother who wrote AP film critic Christy Lemire in horror after spending $96 to take four generations of her family to see "The Nutcracker in 3-D." She wrote: "It broke my heart when we left the theater that my little great-granddaughters (ages 5-13) had sad little, confused faces." Believe me, Auntie Glo, there would have been smiles on those faces after this movie." - Roger, from his review HERE.
