My caption alludes to this famous poem by E. E.Cummings, about the mythical figure Pan:

in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it's
spring
and

the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee

Very true indeed in New York? my guess!!!

Quick. What's a balloon man?

Ebert: Why didn't I do this in the first place? I've added the famous poem by Cummings which the caption refers to:

Great caption! The mythical Pan, as a goat-footed/balloon-headed banker, walks down Wall Street with his unquenchable greed and lust. Perfect!

"I played Mr. Tumus, you know? But eventually, all the kids wanted to hear was Tim the Enchanter again, and I knew it was time to cash it in."

Are you seriously asking if it is too obscure for the New Yorker? I love the New Yorker and these sorts of jokes are exactly what they do. I hope you win, Roger.

Just right. I've never heard that poem before. Then again, I don't know much about Pan as is. I plan on changing that.

Perfect

Way too polysemous.

Spot on!
For those in the know, they get almost a personal-inside joke .. for those not (like moi), they get educated. What the New Yorker has always provided, imho. An excellent caption...fingers-crossed for you, Roger!
