The Platters perform "The Twist"

          Platters.jpg

These are The Platters Featuring Monroe Powell, live in concert on 8/27/2010 at the Acorn Theater in Three Oaks. Michigan. Monroe Powell is last of the survivors who sang lead with the earlier group. He's on the left above; the others are Kenni Jaye, Inez Zak and Don Gloudé. (photo: Ebert)

You have to reflect that some of the dancers in this video have been doing The Twist for almost 50 years. That's why they're so good at it.

Where is the video of you doing the twist?

One of many versions of The Platters. Powell's involvement dates from 1970, 17 years after the original group formed.

Good info here:

It's great to see the old folks having such a good time thanks to Monroe Powell, still going at it.

I simply echo the estimable IEatGod. Surely there is film somewhere of Roger doing the twist. I am proud to have recently uncovered an obscure African tribe that worships Salma Hayek's breasts, but I've miserably failed locating the twisting Ebert anywhere. Somebody help me and IEatGod out already!

Those daggum kids and their rock music.

good shooting there.

Good dancing too.

We saw them at The Acron. It was a fantastic evening. It's great to see true entertainers.

If you haven't made the trip to the Acorn, do so now. They always have the most interesting shows. Open Mic night is a blast.

Roger tweets, drawing from Frank Rich: "Clueless TeePees used as a populist mask on a billionaire coup d'etat."
Seriously? You're bordering on the delusional here.

Ebert: One of us may be. Did you read Frank's column?

Ebert: One of us may be. Did you read Frank's column?
Yes, and I'm dumber for it.

His article is anchored on the idea that Christine O'Donnell "may well prove a godsend for the G.O.P." Karl Rove, smart enough to figure this out the day after the primary but apparently not so the day before, immediately flip flopped and embraced her, since "even should she ultimately lose her own race ... she’s more than willing to play the role of useful idiot ... [and give] populist cover to the billionaires and corporate interests that have been steadily annexing the Tea Party movement and busily plotting to cash in their chips if the G.O.P. prevails."

It would help his "argument" if Rove had actually flip flopped. He did not. He thought Mike Castle would make a better nominee and he still thinks Mike Castle would make a better nominee. Would. But since O'Donnell is the nominee, he's hoping she will win since he wants the G.O.P. to recapture the Senate. But his support is still tepid: I've watched him speak on the subject several times and he's all but holding his nose. Same goes for Charles Krauthmammer.

Rich then writes about O'Donnell as if she's the lynchpin of some devious plot. If so, then why does she play such a minor role in Republican discussions about the midterms? She's not even doing national media anymore. (Some useful idiot!) Sure, the RNC is writing her a check -- if they didn't, they'd infuriate the primary voters who chose her over the machine's choice -- but she's no Scott Brown. The complaint of Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, and her other supporters is not that the G.O.P. establishment hasn't embraced her but that they were working against her. Somehow, the nefarious cabal of billionaires hasn't been able to get Mike Castle to give O'Donnell an endorsement. Some cabal. Some coup.

Rich then pretends that O'Donnell is such a critical "everywoman" because every other Tea Party candidate is so obviously in the thrall of "Wall Street potentates and corporate titans. O’Donnell’s value is the same as that other useful idiot, Michael Steele, who remains at the Republican National Committee only because he can wave the banner of 'diversity' over a virtually all-white party that alternately demonizes African-Americans, Latinos, gays and Muslims." Yes, pay no attention to the Marco Rubios, Nikki Haleys, Tim Scotts, and other people of color behind the voting curtain. The 14 black Republican House candidates, many of whom emerged with Tea Party support, don't count. Governor Bobby Jindal doesn't count.

A reasonable person would look at the array of Tea Party-supported candidates -- male and female, black and white and brown -- and realize that conservatives don't care what color or gender you are. Even Rich's attempt to contrast O'Donnell with "Joe Miller and Ken Buck, the Senate candidates in Alaska and Colorado [who] are graduates of elite universities like those O’Donnell lied about attending" is incoherent. If such lies have any traction, then she's not much of a stalking horse for the elites now, is she?

Rich next goes through a lot of meanderings to show that big money is attracted to rising political candidates. Well I'm shocked, shocked! Next thing you'll be telling me that BP has supported Barack Obama more than any other political figure. Rich notes that, "while these billionaires’ selfish interests are in conflict with the Tea Party’s agenda, they are in complete sync with the G.O.P.’s Washington leadership." If you say so, Frank (and Roger, by extension). And what, exactly, are the Tea Party supporters doing in the Republican primaries? They're throwing out the favorites of the G.O.P.'s Washington leadership -- Castle, Murkowski, Grayson, Lowden, etc. -- time after time after time. Some annexation. Some coup. Rich's delusional take on the Tea Party does not even have an internal logic.

I've ruled out one of us. Now it's your turn.
