One of my favorite versions of this song is by Canadian Jazz singer Holly Cole. By replacing Doris Day's sunny chirping with a bluesy lilt, she transforms a song about naive optimism into a lament of world-weary resignation. Without changing a lyric. (Well, beyond substituting "lovers" for "sweetheart.")

Don't forget the original use of the song, in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), was ironic as well. It was only meant to be taken at face value when it was used later as the theme song for "The Doris Day Show."

why ? Loss of a loved one by suicide is one of THE most painful, awful things for someone to experience .... and to remember. For the folks that survived - that are here living without their loved one who made the decision to take their own life. I wonder ... did the person who made that movie know anyone, love anyone, who completed suicide ? ... .. I wonder also why ? Mr. Ebert .. did you chose to put that clip up ?

Ebert: If you see the movie, you'll understand. It's a serious film.

My favorite version is by Sly and the Family Stone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQZNkzP4kYw

Used to great effect in the Antonio Banderas movie Take the Lead.

... I cried uncontrollably through the clip .. I don't think I could sit through the movie. I'll take your word for it.
