"Plan 9 from Outer Space," by the Worst Director of All Time

The Ebert Club would like to share the following Public domain film while inviting non-members to join the Club and see what the future holds...

"It takes a special weird genius to be voted the Worst Director of All Time, a title that Wood has earned by acclamation. He was so in love with every frame of every scene of every film he shot that he was blind to hilarious blunders, stumbling ineptitude, and acting so bad that it achieved a kind of grandeur." - Roger, from his review of Ed Wood (1994)

"Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future. You are interested in the unknown... the mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here. And now, for the first time, we are bringing to you, the full story of what happened on that fateful day. We are bringing you all the evidence, based only on the secret testimony, of the miserable souls, who survived this terrifying ordeal. The incidents, the places. My friend, we cannot keep this a secret any longer. Let us punish the guilty. Let us reward the innocent. My friend, can your heart stand the shocking facts of grave robbers from outer space?" - Plan 9 From Outer Space

This isn't a bad movie. It's wonderful. Just what I was looking for. Thank you.

Would love to see a "Great Movies" review of this one. Not entirely kidding.

Look, some guy named "Dick Chaney" did the wardrobe!

If it was played on a flight, passengers would walk out.

I've seen Plan 9 a couple times....

I think Ed Wood's pretty close to tying Michael Bay in career movie quality...

Thank you, Roger. It really is an astonishing "piece of work".

Yes, Plan 9 is the worst film ever made, and yes, Ed wood was the worst director of all time. But you must admit, his love for film was unbounded, and that counts for a lot. I sometimes think that some directors today are missing the affection that Wood showed, and are quite willing to put out something that may not be as bad as Plan 9, but is certainly in cases unwatchable, as though they don't particularly care about the product that they have unleashed upon us. Ed Wood believed in the films he released, and loved everything about the business. If he had the talent to match his enthusiasm, he would have been one of the best writer-producer-directors who ever lived. As bad as it is, I would rather watch Plan 9 From Outer Space than Adam Sandler's Jack and Jill.

Thanks Roger!!! You are too awesome for words, I love you, man!

I can't tell you how many laughs I've had over this movie. What a terrible piece of shit.

"Worst Director of All Time"

Of the top of my head - directors worse than Ed Wood:

Coleman Francis

Dwain Esper

Harold P. Warren

Michael Bay

Love the whole idea.

I submit that Ed Wood be dethroned as the Worst Director of All Time. As inept as he was as a director, he at least cared about his work and struggled to make do with what tiny budgets he was given. And at the end of the day, Plan 9 From Outer Space is an entertaining movie. And isn't that what matters?

I believe this particular "honor" should go to writer-director-actor Coleman Francis. He was making movies the same time as Ed Wood. Both worked w/ schlock B-movie producer, Anthony Cordova. And both cast Swedish wrestler, Tor Johnson. But whereas Ed Wood's movies at least have energy and are giddy in their incompetence, Coleman Francis' movies are ugly, meanspirited stretches of screentime where sociopathic characters wandering around barren landscapes, mumbling incomprensible dialogue and commiting acts of gratuitous violence, specifically against women. They are depressing as they are boring. Far greater sins than Ed Wood has ever committed.

So when will the Jerry Brukheimer/Michael Bay remake be released? ;)

This is the greatest spoof movie of all time.

If Wood loved film he was a terrible lover.
