And the winner for best nickname for VU's super fans...
Last week I wrote a column on Valparaiso University men's basketball "super fans," six super-charged students who show up for each home game dressed in unique outfits.
One game they dressed in bikinis for Hawaiian Night. Another game they dressed as ninjas. For the game before holiday break they dressed as Santas, even wrapping themselves in twinkling Christmas lights.
They’ve been called “The Six-Man Crew” by VU players, “The Crusader Disciples” by the VU radio announcer, and “Those Crazy Students Who Always Suit Up” by some fans.
Still, they have no permanent name, not yet anyway.
Suggestions welcome, I wrote in my column.
Well, I've received a few suggestions for their nickname from readers and I say the best one is...
... the "VU-doos," by Rebecca Largura of Valparaiso.
Why the VU-doos? Because, she explained, "voo-doo is a belief in magical rites, sort of what they perform for the crowd."
So there you have it, folks, one more name to add to the mix.
On a related note (pun intended), it's official: No one looks more silly than a male college band member trying to appear tough and macho during a basketball while waving a clarinet in the air. Or a saxophone. Or any instrument, for that matter. (But I do love when the cheerleaders cry after a loss and their makeup runs down their face.)
ADDED BLOG-ENTRY BONUS: As part of my occasional Police Scanner Snippets feature, here's the latest and greatest scanner traffic that I overheard on Monday afternoon - from a police dispatcher to a police officer: "She shoved candy bars into his gas tank and now his car won't run."
Ah, when lust turns to rust. You gotta love it.
