Piniella sets roster

PHOENIX — Cubs manager Lou Piniella announced his 25-man National League Division Series roster after the team’s brief workout Tuesday afternoon at Chase Field.

The notable names left off the roster: left-handers Sean Marshall and Will Ohman; right-hander Steve Trachsel; outfielder Craig Monroe; and catcher Hendry Blanco. The notable addition is right-handed reliever Kevin Hart.

That means Piniella will use 11 pitchers and 14 position players.

Piniella delayed announcing his final roster until he checked the health of left-handed pinch hitter Daryle Ward, who is nursing a sprained left thumb. Ward was able to swing and make contact without pain during batting practice, and he could throw, giving him the green light.

The 25-man roster for the NLDS:

LF Alfonso Soriano
SS Ryan Theriot
1B Derrek Lee
RF Cliff Floyd
3B Aramis Ramirez
2B Mark DeRosa
CF Jacque Jones
C Geovany Soto

CF Felix Pie
2B Mike Fontenot

They could not have set a better roster. Glad Monroe was left off!!!!

I am loving the playoffs starting tonight. The good news about the late start is everyone should be able to get where there are watching the game with plenty of time.

I liked the lineup that had Derosa in the two hole and Theriot (My favorite player) batting in the eight. It gives Soriano a chance to hit with power with a man on. DeRosa seems to really like getting the fastballs the are common for batting second.

I believe in Pinella knows what he is doing so I don't care about what I "think" would be the best.

Glad to see the young kids on the roster. They are the ones who got the Cubs tot he playoffs . . .they should be rewarded. I was concerned the mantra "we need a veteran" would get us in trouble.

Matt Murton is my pick to click as a pinch hitter in the playoffs. Glad he is on the roster! My pick to stink is Zambrano. He is prime for another self-destructive tantrum. Too bad Lou can't pitch.

I would have preferred another lefty in the bullpen, such as Ohman, who seems contrite after shooting his mouth off and seemingly more effective since back from Iowa, or Marshall, who pitched well in relief in Cincinnati.

I wouldn't downplay the most notable thing on the playoff roster: Soto is the starting catcher. Lou is obviously a smart guy, and knows Soto's arm and ability to hit in critical situations places him above the goatee monster that is Kendall.
