The Gutless Era...

if_you_dont_stand_for_something_card-p137934776665044492qdoq_400.jpgThere are a lot of people who read this blog and are quite gutless.

I've always said people who write on message boards and use fake names or send in letters and don't sign them should be taken in the hallway and beat with a bat.

Why?

If you can't stand up and stand behind your thoughts or statements, go cry to someone else. But it's the era we live in and now accept.

That thought came to my mind again Wednesday when I was talking to one of the highest ranking school officials in the state. We were catching up, going over some stuff when this official threw something out at me.

"How does Tony Kees get to coach all those kids at Neuqua Valley that he also coaches with the Fire Academy," the official asked.

I said, "I really don't care."

Then the conversation continued. "I figured someone with the pen would look into that by now," the official said.

I responded and said, "If school officials are that curious, why don't you get on the phone with the IHSA and inquire? The IHSA hides behind the statement that it does what its membership tells them, then why doesn't the membership do something with things like this if it's really a big deal?"

The official responded and said, "You reach a wider audience."

My response was that "this is a perfect example of what's wrong in this state. People will come to me with the problems, but won't make the call to the IHSA and tell Marty Hickman to do something - seeing that he works for them."

Here's a thought...maybe if the Illinois soccer community would stop bitching and moaning about things and actually get together and do something, we wouldn't see the following:

*Postseason games on 55-yard width fields
*Postseason games being played at 3:30 p.m. when there are other teams in the area that are willing to host with lights.
*Using game officials in the postseason that actually know the rules of the game. I was at a game this week and the head official said they were in stoppage time? Hu? Yes, close to five minutes of stoppage time in a 2-1 game.
*And most of all - maybe someone will step up and inquire why there isn't an IHSA executive yet with a soccer background?

But until someone takes a leadership role in the soccer community, it will be status quo. Look at what the Illinois basketball nation did last high school basketball season when it managed to pressure the pencil geeks in Bloomington to reverse a game official's call after watching a YouTube video.

Football and basketball folks know how to get things done.

And until the soccer community gets its team together, it will always be second class to the IHSA-YSO.

What is the IHSA rule on number of players a coach can train in the club season as well as hs season? 3, 4 5?

I do believe that 2 sections of IHSA rules are involved

3.107 During the school year, a person who is a coach in any sport at a member school, may be involved in any respect with any non-school team, only if the number of squad members from his/her school which are on the non-school team roster does not exceed one-half the number of players needed to field a team in actual IHSA state series competition in that sport.

3.153 Persons who coach a sport at a member school may have a maximum of 25 days of contact in that sport with students from that school during the period between the last day of classes or Monday of Week 49 in the IHSA Standardized Calendar (whichever date is earlier) in the spring each year and Sunday of Week 5 in the IHSA Standardized Calendar.Students may have a maximum of 25 days of contact per sport with persons who coach that sport at the school they attend during the same time period. A day of contact is defined as any date on which any coaching or instruction in the skills
and techniques of any sport takes place

So who knows if they can or can't? Part one means fewer than 6 players from NV and the second part means 25 contact days in a 7 week period, and is probably not doable (unless the Fire qualify for the Academy Finals, which is 7 days long) Don't think either was violated

Thanks for posting, but I think you guys are missing the point the blog. If people have issues, we always ask - why do people go to the media? You now understand why.

No. I understood. However, the real point of the post should have been - why is a high ranking school official worrying him or herself with pointing the finger at what may or may not be a rule violation in an aspect of education that is a blip on the radar in the grand scheme of the education system woes in the united states. Do soccer coaches approach you with administrative rule violations taking place at other high schools? Soccer Coach - "Joe, how can New Trier have class sizes of 15 students while Morton has class sizes of 35? You think someone with a pen would look into that by now."

Seems rather ridiculous.

So........why not name the official ????

There's no need to do that. That's like naming the name of a player who misses a game-winning PK. There is a fine line.

Then aren't you applying a double standard Joe? Allowing an un-named official to imply that something is not quite right with the coaching situation at NV is like giving this un-named official a free pass to potential slander. No disrespect man but it's a bit hypocritical eh?

Not at all. There is a difference between trying to publically name someone for something pretty basic compared to standing up for something you believe in or feel is wrong. In a way, by you using a fake name - you are doing the same thing.

Why do you name coaches and rip on them then??? Name everyone else when a mistake is made.

I only jump on coaches when they are too lazy to do something to promote their players, like taking a second to call in a score and give a few names to make the day of player or two.
