It's Only One Game, First Week...

It's funny to see how some people react after one game, one week.

Holy christ, the sky is falling. Relax people.

I think Barrington coach Scott Steib said it best after his team lost to Deerfield to start the season. "It's one game. We have some stuff to work on."

It's amazing how a win has people saying one thing, while a loss has people saying another thing.

Seriously, some people need to get a life. This isn't football where one loss puts more pressure on you, because you need so many wins for the IHSA tournament.

Yes, everyone wants to win. But maybe some people should think like St. Viator coach Mike Taylor.

Every year, he uses the first half of the season as the preseason. That was the same way former St. Viator girls soccer coach Rory Dames approached things, too.

He mixes and matches lineups, tries kids in different positions. It's high school soccer - not the damn World Cup.

He gives players a true opportunity to earn an opportunity to play. Taylor doesn't like to lose, but he realizes his role. His role is to improve his players and team as the year goes on.

If St. Viator loses a couple games early on, he uses that as a teaching and motivational tool. But he also knows life goes on.

So relax people.

Go out and enjoy the numerous games on Saturday - highlighted by Neuqua Valley and Lyons. I'll be at Lincoln-Way East and St. Ignatius, where Lincoln-Way East coach Brian Papa will move into elite national company when it comes to games coached as a combined boys and girls coach.

And then I'll be off to sunny San Diego on Saturday evening for a little vacation.

Absolutely agree Joe. Everybody makes the playoffs so a few losses mean nothing. The point is to develop the TEAM during the season so that the team does it's best during the playoffs. Yes... a few losses may affect the seeding of the team for the playoffs but last season on the girls side quite a few higher seeds got knocked out by teams they had already beaten during the regular season. So a lot of wins during the regular seasons really means nothing. But I'm afraid there's a few coaches out there that don't seem to understand that.

No, that's not all the regular season is for. Everyone wants to win conference and tournaments so if you don't win state you still have something to look back on your season. Also the regular season is about having a good time with your friends. Don't get me wrong I want to win state to at all costs, but a state championship isn't everything.
