I remember back in the summer of 2000, the cool thing for boys soccer players was to skip high school and play year round.
That is now the fad for girls soccer players, skip high school and play year round.
But as we enter the 2009 boys soccer season, which officially kicks off in less than 45 days, I ask this: Is it still cool for boys soccer players to skip the high school season and play year round?
I think that fad is dead, and there are reasons why.

I've been coaching boys varsity soccer for 8 years and never had a problem with boys not wanting to play HS soccer. I've seen it with girls who play club instead of HS soccer but boys tend to want to play HS soccer. However, I just had a transfer student come to us from one of the private schools and he plays Magic. He introduced himself during the summer and told me he looked forward to playing with us this upcoming school year. I receive a call yesterday saying that his Magic coach doesn't want him to play HS soccer, instead he should just play Magic year round. I wish the boy well and told him good luck. I hope not all club coaches are like this. My boys soccer program is not bad either. We won the conference title 2 out of the past 3 years in a very tough conference.
