Bri is, Bri isn't, Bri is, Bri isn't...

You've heard it before - a picture says a 1,000 words. There's no question this one does.

The pain, the heartbreak, the confusion, the unknown. (Even the look on the ref's knee gives a painful look.)

Prior to suffering an ACL injury last season, West Virginia-bound Bri Rodriguez was one of the top midfielders in the country. The senior is trying to become the first player from the area to be named to the Sun-TImes All-Area Girls Soccer Team all four years.

This isn't the Naperville Sun All-Area Team we're talking about. It's an accomplishment no one has secured before.

But as we've seen so many times with girls players in the past, if you push this injury too fast - it's going to slow the recovery process down. So is Rodriguez ready for the 2009 season?

You read and tell me.

2:03 p.m. Friday:
Trost's email to Waubonsie Valley coach Julie Bergstrom: Status with Bri - is she set for season officially?
11:24 a.m. Saturday:
Bergstrom's response to Trost: Yes.
11:25 a.m. Saturday:
Trost's response to Bergstrom: Playing first game?
12:05 p.m. Saturday:
Bergstrom's response to Trost: I don't know, not rushing anything.
12:10 p.m. Saturday:
Trost's response to Bergstrom: OK, that's what I meant. So she's not ready?

Rodriguez had never missed a game because of injury before this. Now all are wondering when she'll really return?

- Joe Trost

I don't think it was very nice of you to put such a sad picture of this wonderful player on your blog. She's not a professional athlete - - she's a kid, and you've memorialized probably one of the worst moments she ever had. I'm sure you have numerous terrific pictures of her that we'd all enjoy seeing. If your child ever sustained a serious injury like Bri did, and if anyone happened to catch that horrific moment on film, I doubt you'd like it posted on someone else's blog, accompanied by a silly heading.

The story was about the pain, the challenge and how things can change so fast. The picture tells the whole story. Knowing Bri, having talked to her and talked to high school, college and club coaches about her, there's little doubt in my mind she will overcome this in the long run. But there's also no question people want to know when she'll play, which is the reason for the headline. If my child did have an injury, yes, I would want pictures of that because it reminds you of how lucky you are at times in life. People want coverage, but they only want coverage they like. Sometimes you have to look at coverage with a clear mind, realizing that it tells the story of life. I say this a lot - I'm jealous of my grandparents because they have been through everything in life. The ups and downs, good and bad. They have pictures showing the good and bad, my grandfather has a wound from from World War II. He looks at it everyday, and it reminds him of a lot. He has newspaper clippings of good and bad stories. Pictures tell a great story, and they can motivate, too.
