Thursday's news and notes...

Larkin and Lake Zurich won conference titles this week. Nothing new to the Bears, but a first for Larkin.

Speaking of "Lil 'ol Lake Zurich," seems the Bears are fired up at me. They beat No. 1 New Trier on Saturday and some felt they should've been No. 1. But that's not how it works folks. As many know, the minute you start worrying about rankings is when the clock strikes midnight. A year ago, Lake Zurich beat New Trier, too, but the Trevians were the ones that advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Will history repeat itself this year? Hopefully not for Lake Zurich. I have long been on the Lake Zurich bandwagon, as former coach Pete Ternes can tell you. They have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pepsi Showdown every year - but never to the semis.

And now for some other news and notes...

Outside of a tough loss 2-1 loss to Larkin this week, St. Charles North has been playing with a new attitude and intensity according to coach Eric Willson.

"If we continue to play with this new-found attitude, there is a chance we could make some noise next week in the playoffs," Willson said.

The North Stars have been powered of late by: sophomore Noah Anthony (one goal, three assists in last four games), junior midfielder Angelo Catalano (eight assists), defenders Zach Matuszak and Luis Ramirez and Alex Bergmann and junior goalie Zach Hosler.

*Streamwood's Alex Perez has continued his outstanding play and currently has 17 goals and 10 assists. But he's done more than just score of late.

"He has been outstanding for us," Streamwood coach Matt Polovin said. "I put him in as keeper this past Saturday against Schaumburg to get more energy, and we won 2-1. He played keeper again on Monday against St. Charles North, and we won 3-0. He played Tuesday against Lake Park in goal and we tied 1-1, but really should have beaten them. He has done it all for us this season."

*Two big reasons why Libertyville is unbeaten in its last five games is due to the play of Andrew Stone (four goals, four assists) and Kyle Gustafson (three goals, two assists).
