Why is soccer the only high school sport in Illinois that has a different overtime format for the postseason than it does for the regular season? It actually stunned me last year when I learned the IHSA said teams that use four overtimes during the regular season were breaking IHSA rules. But yet when the postseason rolls around, there is a new tie breaker - four overtimes.
For those that don't know, the IHSA used to break ties in the state playoffs with two, 10-minute golden goal overtimes followed by penalty kicks. Last year, it was changed to four, 10-minute overtimes followed by penalty kicks. But don't use four overtimes during the regular season, because we wouldn't want you to prepare.
Tell me one other sport that uses a different tie-breaking format for the postseason than what it does for the regular season?
I just don't get it sometimes and this is a perfect SNL "Are you serious IHSA?"
Let's get to some news and notes...
*IHSA assistant executive director Beth Sauser responded Monday afternoon to Kenwood electing to forfeit Monday's Class 3A regional semifinal, because of a scheduling issue with regional host Riverside-Brookfield. The issue was reported in Monday's Sun-TImes and in this blog.
"Kenwood had an opportunity to host when we were looking for regional hosts," Sauser said. "We didn't know they were upset until 8:30 a.m. Friday. We didn't know they were thinking forfeiting until 4:30 p.m. Friday. Riverside-Brookfield didn't know until (Monday) morning."
*Neuqua Valley will be joining the Pepsi Showdown in 2009, along with Morton.
*After starting the season 0-3 against three preseason Top 10 teams - Geneva, Naperville Central and Lyons - Oswego has gone 13-4-1.
"We switched our formation in the second half of the Lyons game, and it has worked well since then," Oswego coach Travis Carlisle said. "Sean Totsch has notched 13 goals in that time, and Matt Bermes and Scott Chavez have solidified our central mid. Ryan Miller has been a beast for us in goal. Our back line starts three sophomores and are gaining experience with our one senior, Andrew Tram, playing his best all year. I'm really lucky to have a great group of guys this season, and on top of it they are hillarious."
*Wheaton Academy's Charles West has been solid all year for the Warriors with nine goals and two assists.
"Charles spent half of the season as our lone center back before moving to center mid," Wheaton Academy coach Jeff Brooke said. "His abiliity in the air (6'5'') and possession oriented mindset has changed the way we play as a unit and has him standing as our top goal scorer."
Brooke also had positive things to say about goalie Ryan Seager (1.1 GAA, 130 saves).
"Ryan Seager is in his fourth year at the varsity level and is a different player after joining the Sockers last fall," Brooke said. "His leadership, athletic ability and work ethic has made him one of the best keepers in the area."

Kelly Cheated vs Argo Today. Again, they had 4 players that were not on the roster and were issued two reds and yellows because of this. They ended up beating us by a cheap goal it is not fair that those players played in that game. These hardworking argo soccer players got robbed of that game and there is no one listening since we are not a solid program like kelly but they cheated and got caught how can this be right?
