Surprise team this year - Larkin?

But don't say that to Larkin coach Ken Hall.

As many people expect, this could be a big year for the program.

Don't believe me or its No. 2 seed in the upcoming Pepsi Showdown? Then read for yourself...

"I think we will be better than solid," said Hall, whose Royals finished a respectable fourth in the Upstate Eight Conference last season and 17-6-4 overall record. "We have good scorers and a defense that is rock solid.

"We aren't that team with one or two standout players, but we have a lot of depth."
Larkin's hopes are centered around one of the area's largest returning senior classes, led by All-Area selections Fernando Alvarez and Raul Sandoval.

Alvarez is the team's top defensive player, while Sandoval has led the team in scoring the past two seasons.

Other expected key contributors include Raziel Somarriba, Mike Gloss, Carson McFadden, Danny Hinterlong and Misael Hernandez, among others.

"I have 16-17 players that can start on this team," Hall said. "I've never coached a deeper high school team. I'm ready to get the (preseason) started and I think the boys are too."

I agree, Larkin is going to be very dangerous this year. But Joe, Schaumburg as the #1 seed for the Pepsi Showdown??? I know they were in the Supers last fall and return a potential player of the year candidate in Beard, but who else do they have around him???

Also, wondering your thoughts on the sites for the Sectionals this year... with the move to 3 classes... 3A Sectionals look loaded from top to bottom and should provide ALOT of great post-season matchups, especially early on...is this good or bad for HS Soccer... I know the geography setup sucks...and it continues to baffle me as how can Barrington host a Regional in the same Sectional that include Rockford, McHenry, and Huntley?!?!?! Then Palatine heads out for the Liberyville Sectional with GBS, Warren and Mundelein...yet Evanston and Maine South go in yet another direction?? Baffles me...all that I know is I'm sure we will see some Regionals and Sectionals that are loaded and have potential match-ups that we have never seen before, or at least for quite some time...
