Making a difference off the field...
Some things change and some don't... »
« And they're off...

Entering this season, one thing I plan to focus on is what players and teams are doing off the field.

Anyone who knows me well realizes this is something very important to me. It's easy to score a goal on the field for some, but how many people go the extra step off the field?

Many do, but far many more don't.

And in the end, a goal scored off the field is far more important than those scored on the field.

From Wheaton Academy, Hinsdale Central, the Evanston and New Trier girls soccer teams, there are so many great people doing countless good things for thousands of people throughout the area and world in some cases.

You'll read about them this season, and hopefully you'll let me know about the ones I miss.

But here is one case I want you to support. Whether it's a penny or a $1,000, the local soccer community can make a huge difference in a situation that isn't fair.

A young mother of a 1-year-old was diagnosed with leukemia last November. At just the tender age of 31, she is undergoing treatment after relapsing following a transplant. Her husband, a young local soccer coach, has taken the year off from teaching and coaching to care for his family.

Because of severe risk of infection, she has been in isolation. They are now facing mounting bills. Coaches at the high school have donated funds, and countless others have risen to the occasion.

Any donation is appreciated.

It's time for the soccer community to rally and score a big goal off the field.

This could be your mom, your sister, your wife, your girlfriend, your neighbor.

All I'm asking for is that you make an effort, and that's something everyone - no matter what life situation they face - can do. It might just be $5 or $10, but it's something.
