A very special event...

Some people didn't think it would live to see No. 100, and now Cornerkicks has turned 200 - as in blog No. 200. It's been an interesting ride so far, and it's only going to get better.

Nevertheless, it's only fitting that I have a chance to write about a great event taking place tomorrow at Green Garden Country Club in Frankfort. I have been honored to take part in the annual Michele Bingham Golf Outing, which is held each July right around the former Lincoln-Way student's birthday.

Bingham, a freshman at the time, was tragically killed when a car plowed into her more than 14 years ago during soccer practice at Lincoln-Way East.

But just as she did during her life, Bingham is still touching lives today.

Family and friends organized an annual golf outing to raise money for scholarships in Bingham's name. Over the past 14 years, more than $50,000 has been raised, and scholarships have been awarded to 20 soccer players. A number of Bingham's former teammates return to work the annual golf outing each July, as do each of the scholarship recipients.

I reached out to a number of media members this past week, encouraging them to put the spotlight on this event. As Veva Doogan would say, it's a spotlight Michele is shinning from heaven.

Here are two of the stories that ran today:

I was fortunate enough to begin my coaching career 8 years ago at Bremen High School in Midlothian. During the spring of 2001, the then varsity coach, Stacie Sevcik (who earned the inaugural Michele Bingham scholarship as a player at Lincoln Way), inspired our girls program to organize several community service activities. Specifically we helped clean up the neighborhood and also ran a soccer clinic for youngsters. Due to the efforts of the girls in the program, we earned the Michele Bingham Team Award that year. I don't know if that honor is still being awarded, but it is an award with which I am proud to be associated.
